On the powers that be podcast we examine the players and currents behind today's most consequential decisions join us listen to the powers that be wherever you get your podcasts I'm sorry the only reason for us lost that game you know you know you know you know run so is it quite a day for the bats which is gonna happen every once in a while but painter was the story for me yesterday and really the way he's pitched it's he came back from the minor leagues has been a major story and We're now we're not moving towards a very good problem for the tholies to have and that is for them to decide who should get the ball in a potential game for the playoffs series so Clearly you know Sanchez and Lazardo in some order have been their best two pitchers for a long time now I think Lazardo's the best pitcher. I would hand them the ball in game one. All right, Lazardo Sanchez, Lazardo We're gonna cross our fingers that that Zach wheel is gonna figure this out right and we're crossing our fingers that last Sunday was the start of No wheeler come back around okay, we'll okay, so here's the question what who gets the ball in game four Arinola has been better for two months. No, or Andrew painter. No, you sure about that. Yes, I'm not I say that with a straight face because I'm going with the vet

I'm going with the vet in the situation now painter has pitched well and it looks like he's worked his way out of whatever was he was going through and And he is your future, right? But I would probably go with no in that situation because we don't we've seen moments where It it it looks like the moment has been too big for painted hasn't been lately But I'm still it still resonates with me when I was listening to the I haven't had a chance to listen to a lot of games But he was on the mound and I remember I remember a Scott saying something to the effect that he has to learn how to throw the fastball Mm-hmm, and he was struggling throwing his fastball So he hasn't since he come back I mean he's no like a different picture. Well, I mean and he'll get his opportunity Joe But if we talk about right out the gate, I'm going with no I'm going to I'm going with the better It's on my radar that I would give the ball to painter over no I just think his upside is higher I mean let me try man to know that but in a situation like that I'm going with the best if you are so let's so I understand your point I think I think the fillies probably will go with no but if you're telling me that one of these two guys go six or seven

Shutout innings in a playoff game with like eight or nine or 10 strikeouts It's painter. I just think no to me know and he's been way better and I like the way he's pitched lately and I try I feel better about him clearly. I just feel like there's I There's like a ceiling to what he's gonna give you right? It's gonna be five or six innings in a playoff game and you cross your fingers the one or two home runs He allows is with nobody on base right and it's like five or six innings Somewhere between one and three runs is probably the Aaron Nolan start in the postseason that if I can guess it right now The painer did yesterday really what painer's done two of his last three starts the St. Louis start and then yesterday against Arizona seven innings One run eight strikeouts no walks against St. Louis yesterday seven innings six strikeouts no walks two hits There's a high end right now to Andrew painter that I You know, I just didn't expect this year. We didn't see it at all the first four months of the season like here This is the guy that they told us he could be no I know you're excited about it, but but still you know if we're talking about You know starting and I'm gonna go with the better guys

He's gonna get his opportunity, but I'm gonna go with no so it seems like you nothing can move you the next four weeks Because I'm I'm in the point where I can be moved like if painter keeps pitching like this I'm hand in the ball in October like I need to this is this is a different making picture now for you Is it no matter what or if painter dominates the next month can you change your mind? I could change my mind, but it but it would be out of respect For no love if that's what we're talking about we're talking about that third picture. I respect for him That's a conversation. I ask him how he's feeling it all depends on how he looks Moving towards that the playoff series if he looks decent then that's I'll just throw him out there But if if he looks like you know his stuff is not there whatever I'll ask him about it But I'm not it's not something that for me. I'm just gonna do you know without without consulting him And I know a lot of people say why are you consulting him? He's a player. I mean he's a vet and you know He if he feels that he can go and he can give me something You know, I'm going with him. Well, it's interesting you bring that because I feel like that in the past

Specifically Rob Thompson the he they were just deferred to their guys, right? Like castianos would play castianos would get a lot of that snow will get the start like they would just defer to their guys because they've been here I don't know how Don maddenly place it. I mean Yeah, couple things true. I mean the Wheeler thing is its own thing right like are they just gonna give him one of the top starts Because he's acquit or are they gonna go off of what their eyes are telling them which he's not pitch well for a couple months and the same thing with painter Are they gonna if he keeps going like this? I trust him two one five five nine two ninety four ninety four All right, let's go back to the phones and then Don maddenly spoke yesterday about Andrew Paine. Well, let you hear what he said because it certainly sounds like the manager is Pretty darn impressed Jay and West Philly is up on WIP Jay What up? He was going on. What's up Jay? How you doing, man? I'm alright. I'm alright. Yeah, Mr. General buttons over there. Mr. Emotional I am great Jay. How are you? I'm great. Yeah

I'm not emotional. I'm great feeling good Yeah But it's the other day I need my Philly's point out that I apologize to the audience the J. In West Philly's point and get out there What is anyone gonna do? Well, you'll be trying to get through to this mr. Emotional over there And you're selling them about football and how hard it is to win it You just throw it out the window how hard is that like Here's the wall, you know what you know what it is Jay? It's it's the fandom in Joe and I and I respect that because let me tell you the truth of the matter is and This is an inside to how I feel on a daily basis. This is why I like to talk to people about football most times Jay because that like sit next to Joe It's like talking to all the fans on a daily basis, but like I have to talk to we know ball I mean I know ball and all the fans know ball. I gotta talk to Joe. We know ball. That's all go ahead Jay You know you know ball or ball. Which one? I know both. Oh, I don't know ball the more you'll see Hey wait, let me brush that yeah, everyone watching on YouTube. Check out Hughes hair growth. Yeah, I got it

It's a little thin. Now I know both Jay. I know ball then I know ball Go ahead Well, you said there and you talk about the quarterback right now what make a break what does that mean? I'm Make a break here for Yeah, what do you mean what do we gotta prove? But I don't think prove is the right word, but I think what he I think I think I think make a break is the same thing. What do you gotta do? Well his contract is the issue Jay so I think after this year it's gonna go on a Contract issue talk about football right now. No, no, no, no, no his contract is the is the the point of Infliction here. That's where we're at. So I believe after the year It's either he gets a brand new contract from the Eagles or he's gone. I don't think he's gonna do it here Yes, I don't think he's gonna play on this deal next year I don't think he's gonna want to play on this deal and you know what he's earned the right to say I don't want to play on this deal I'd rather I want some more security. Yeah, so he'll do

So he earned the race and I mean what how did you earn the right by doing what by being a good player for the Eagles? Jay and why is this so complicated? Oh, we talked about taking a horse right yet what Jay? Why is this so complicated every other player in town every other player every other figure out? Nope, it's not hard. It's not hard. It's not hard. It's not talking about the office. It really a gentleman channel because this We need to establish something we've created this down Jeff. No, no button We have created something that is so Joe button. We have created something giggles Douglas over here We've created something that is so silly. What's that every other player specifically on the Eagles because it's a salary cap league We talk about them in the context of their play If it's going up if it's going down if they're worth their money and if the you think the Eagles will either draft a cheaper younger player with this player We can't have that discussion apparently. It becomes so emotes you guys are emotional. I'm telling you how this is

The same thing when a son retic one or more money the same thing when when any of these players over the years It's about their play versus their salary If if Jordan my lot of falls off guess what they're gonna do. They're gonna get a new cheaper left tackle That's how this works. It's not It's not what but I don't believe it is so and I don't think the Eagles do I know you don't but I'll be trying to do it It's not well, but it isn't it isn't But if it was you every quarterback that had success would always stay with their team It's not different. We just we make it different because we're emotional. So J I'll put them back It is about his contract I think he's gonna want to raise after this season because he has been has been doesn't mean he will continue to be a good player And if he plays well, I think they'll give him a new contract if he doesn't I think they will find a different quarterback make or break It's so simple. Go ahead. Yeah, you say he let's talk Let's talk about let's talk about this office. Landshade right was bad. Yeah right wrong. She was bad, right?

So you said the office was bad right? It was all his fault. No, but he played poorly He played poorly because he had a receiver that quit on routes and quit and the office alarm was hurt right? Uh, that's sure part of it, but do you think he played do you think he played well? Do you do you think he played well? Do you think just yes or no? Do you think Jalen played well last season General buttons how come you answer my question? Bad Jamy cuz J Do you think Jalen hurts played well? PJ it is September we have established all these things that you keep talking about Everyone knows the offensive line was banged up everybody knows all these things about AJ Brown The question is to Jalen play well No, not Why can't he rise above it But you mean why can't he rise where he's supposed to block and catch two? No, why can't he play better? Why can't his accuracy be better Why can't he run better?

Perhaps perhaps he would have caught a couple more passes Who can make perhaps perhaps the all world AJ that you Talking about if he had to follow through and then quit on his team in the city We might have won some more games, right? Yeah, so office might have looked a little better, right? Yeah, so you don't think any of this was Jalen's fault last year Did I say I said he had a little burnt but you put it all on who? I know I'm not in for all of it. They're on every new new new new new new new new Everything AJ plays for the Patriots The defense the defense carried them all season My god the defense carried do you watch the game with your eyes open or closed? It must be closed That's enough of Jalen West filling The defense the defense that carried the team last year did I watch a different team he was talking about the play I he probably was talking about how many points the offense going to play off game

They didn't score a lot. I can't remember exactly off top my head. It was 19 Yeah, so it's unacceptable to score 19 points in a home playoff game against a defense that was nine or defense That was coming here with zombies. They were signing guys off the street. Yeah, but on the flip side there I think they're the 49ers off was a little banged up to everybody was banged up So you know, but the I get Jay's point you got to score points though. You got to score what was Jay's point That it wasn't all Jalen's fault who said it was no, but that's how sometimes I'm not saying you But that's how sometimes it sounds because people just want to defend the player no one no I don't ever heard one person not one anywhere say Alassie's was all Jalen hurts fault not one who we're talking Making things up. No, nobody said that, but here's the reality of the NFL And this is how you gonna look at it. I know you're probably gonna ask me after I make this statement You know, like what does that got to do with us? To talk below is the starter for the land of falcons more than likely Kurt cousins is the starter for the Raiders that's that's happening

That's how hard it is to find quarterbacks in the NFL and we have one that yeah last year was a down year But when you look at his resume compared to the two guys that are about to lead a team a new team Into a new era that just shows you how hard it is to find anybody may I give you the flip side May I give it a flip side? Two years ago the dolphins gave two of the same contractors Jalen and the idea that you can't move on He went till two at one point led the NFL and passing years for it and for CZ What it's happening to him he fell off fast decline and the dolphins ate 100 million dollars to get him off Got him up out of it. So like the idea that you were good once means we keep you forever The didn't the dolphins just show we don't care. Yeah, but I would say and I look I think Jalen Jalen's better than two That's not my point my point is though You say it's hard to find a quarterback the reason too is the falcons quarterback is because the dolphins said you're getting so bad so fast We don't want you here. Yeah, he's still got another shot now calm accordus QB2. I know our form of our form of quarterback

Practice squad How you I just look at it especially in NFL. I mean well on the place quarterback's plan is like You as bad as you were like Kurt cousins last year was bad And then you look at two of and they get another bite at the apple. It's crazy. I mean here I think Jalen will get it shot if it's not here No, but but what I'm saying in comparison to Jalen is you know when you talk about compare to their seasons and you look at Jalen's season Look at that line. I know but don't we have a higher but I'm confused like no, we do no no, I'm not arguing that job, but what I'm saying is I guess in a nutshell that I'm willing To to work with Jalen a little bit longer to get him where I know he could potentially be but isn't that this season like that to meet We're we've arrived there. Yeah, this is the year to see if he can be the season and potentially beyond well That's see that's where we we depart because I That's All right, can we hear from Don Mattingley done Mattingley yesterday after the game sure sounds like he's impressed with his young picture

He I thought it was interesting. He combined the two of them yesterday He didn't I mean he's he's talking about how impressed he was with painter and he's like early in the season when both Nola and painter started I was like oh and now it's the opposite right you feel pretty good. I I wonder at the right time too I just found interesting. He put those two together I wonder if he puts them in the same bucket right two guys that struggled now they're pitching well And he's gonna have to decide you know probably a month from now. Who do my handing the ball to in a playoff game? That's why I said that's why you know, I mean I didn't hear that cut But it just kind of feels like if it comes down to that that's a conversation that you're gonna have with with with uh Nola about painter if he's pitching well down the stretch Well, I don't you we said the conversation about no like well, they don't know what no no I'm saying no, look you're gonna have the cut where they don't but you say hey You do want him to know because you you're gonna need him Joe it that's some point you're probably gonna need no And if it's if it's as as a Hi, I'm PJ vote and I want to tell you about my podcast search engine We try to make sense of the world one question at a time no question too big no question too small

We will even answer your questions if you send them in Stuff like what happens when a cemetery goes out of business What should we do about teens using AI to do their homework Who buys luggage at the airport luggage store Follow and listen to search engine in partnership with Odyssey wherever you get your podcasts Start or in the bullpick you got a need well So okay, so that brings us back to when we were discussing a few minutes ago Should they try go all out for the for the playoffs right at some point they might want to start Kind of decelerating one of these two guys to pitch out of the bullpen You know what I mean like if I would think the guy that doesn't start in the playoffs is gonna come out of the bullpen and help and Logically would think Andrew painter with his stuff would be a better bullpen guy So maybe in the next two weeks they start to ramp him down that that will be interesting and a tell on if they really want to win this division John and Cherry Hill what's up John? Hey guys Look I got the answer that Jay was looking for When you're when you get facing third and nine and you're running button hooks on the outside there five yards deep

I mean yeah, there's the problem right there Can we at least run a route that gets the first down? I'm not taking it all off of Jalen I'm just saying the play calling was so predictable and it was it was it was pretty obvious where we're going sure It was John do you think there's any do you think potentially there's a Jalen has a role in that? Yeah, he may be decision-making but give the guys not a spring ticket. He's not gonna run any but look Listen, I'm not I'm a Jalen supporter. I want that to be out there. I want everybody in this city because I'm very confused right now in this city guys I mean, I love oh yeah, I've been sitting here for an hour listening I feel like really can't on Ted last I just want to grunt and say curse words. I don't understand I don't know I mean Has presented us with nothing but class poise patients of the You know teach ability the guy is been in every different offense every different year is entire life He's coachable. He's he's he's a good but yeah, before you go on This is this stuff. You're saying it's not really true. I mean like it's not like the offense has been the same

At the players have said it. It's the same offense now this one is brand new now. There have been different play callers Obviously the offense has been the same for the whole time he's been here until this one It's just been different people calling the place and the second thing is I generally want to believe what you're saying But stories have come out sourced from people within the Eagles saying he's not those things you're saying that he hasn't been coachable That he pushed back on chain so I don't know man. It sounds like a great story. I'm not I just a guy's a winner at the same time you give him the benefit of the doubt because he's a winner The guys are winner and look I you know It's funny how we're talking about the fillies and the contrast between sports Oh, we want to win the the east we want to win the division We want to take the one thing this and that and in football. It's like, you know Oh, no stats don't matter. This doesn't and it's only about the play I couldn't disagree with you more by the way about the fillies I I want them to play every single day We've seen the past all-star break Winning divisions in the past it doesn't do any good for our team I want them out on that dirt every single day until they're in the world series and got a and you still need a little hope

I mean my last question to be on his call was am I a fool for really buying in like I did in 23 But I want to stick with the Eagles man you you're not a fool John you're not a fool you're a fan. I mean not a fool You think you're a fool I don't think you're a fool John the way they played the last month has been phenomenal I don't think it's fooling you it happened to know no, no, but then you did the game like last time you get scared Oh, they can take a blue sex up. I know and it makes you reevaluate your whole position Well, listen, I mean the fillies were just gonna have to show up every day like we do and that's when I'm confused about with this city Okay, you got a guy in jalen and you I please you know don't cut me off until I ask you one question You got you got it anyway You said this was a premiere organization. Yes, when did that happen? I grew up remembering all the downed dynasties who ran into dune town You know, we can't do it. We can't win it. We were just destined to fail We got there every year. We were as good as anybody else in every league and we just never got it done

When all of a sudden this whole city change and say hey, 11 means isn't good enough of making two super bowls and and three super bowls and Winning one and and win and two and when is it not good enough when is our quarterback on a hot seat now Because of one down year where is the old line was trash the offensive coordinator was super predictable It's not a one down year the passing game guys are you watching the same sport as me? The passing game has gone backwards every year since jalen's peak in 22 when I thought he was awesome and should do one Force and it's a day John But John it's like he's got this mental weight on him. Okay, then then it should bounce back up this year I hope that's it john. I just I've watched I agree Okay, I'm nervous with these are just receiving now dancers are small I I understand the point and I agree I'm gonna I like you answer your question, but just quickly to me they became that when how we came back in a power I mean we got the closet. Yeah, well, or you can go back to Andy I mean I just the last 25 years in pro football. I know absolutely I know before that the Eagles were not a premier organization, but to me since Andy got here

Patriots chiefs You could throw a couple paint manning teams like the Colts and Broncos, you know We could find three or four of the teams that have been really good, but the Eagles are right there They've been a force. No, I hope you don't misunderstand me. I I agree with you 100% we are the You take the Patriots out And maybe even the chiefs were the best team in the last order of I agree I agree And and I'm on that train, but I got to give it up for guys like Donovan McNabb guys like Jaylen Hurts who brought us there and my question is for you is that Would you rather have or if you could swap at the errors in the quarterback? Would you rather play for her? Would you rather have McNabb now? I mean everybody I Or tended in the city for a long time and everybody hated McNabb I thought like I was an apologist for him all of that and Jaylen Hurts I respect that man more as a man as a player and he's got it done He's got the ring. He was the best player in two super bowl. Yes, and we got one home with him I mean would you rather have gone that it's always gonna be type of pocket pass or needs to run or run pass or needs to pass

I mean When are we just gonna be happy? We are a premier organization in this city Maybe city needs to start acting like it being a little loyal showing some things well okay I'm it's a great phone call. It's a great. It's a great phone call John. I love your passion And to me when you're a premier organization loyalty goes second to the organization winning winning and continue to win That's number one. I you can't just stay low because the guy was good before and you can answer the question I know is this to me in the last 25 years the Eagles have not been driven Through all the success by a Hall of Fame quarterback. It's just they all they don't have their mahalms They don't have a break. That's what makes it special right but that to me also points to it's about the collective It's not about the this quarterback or the quarterback before or the quarterback before that That's where I come from the Eagles as of right now have zero Hall of Fame quarterbacks and look at now in this 25 year run I'm talking about zero maybe jail and we'll get there But they've won as much as all these teams with all these Hall of Fame quarterbacks the Eagles are not driven by the quarterback

Yeah, but I think I think in essence you're right, but you're diminishing at the same time Even though if you feel Jalen isn't a Hall of Fame quarterback what he brings to the table I don't think I am. I'm just not to me. It's not worth $60 million a year in a salary cap well That's where I come from obviously it was worth it to them. What's now it has been well They paid him they paid him out to the first Super Bowl right but then he went to the second and now we're in this mode right so to your point The question is proven you got to prove it this year Jalen or Donovan I'm not answering. Well, you can't copy out. He asked your question Donovan was my quarterback so donovan lord like demand in the same breath that you asked me that question you spoke about more He did he did and and I and and to a man as good as Jalen has been to this organization Donovan was the catalyst To put us in the position for you to have the success that you're having right now. He was all right We'll come back Ryan Hamill join us with an update on everything going on with Eagles radio thought on sports radio 94 WIP

What's Joe Jellie? Oh you guys with us 215 592 94 9 for next hour. We joined by Elliott sure parks and Jason Kelsey football guy hour here on the midday show excited to talk to both But of course Jason talking about his item in the Eagles radio thought Ryan Hamins joining us had to give us an update on Hopefully our items going up you and all the items going up Ryan. How you doing? We got her. I'm gonna turn her back. We need her Mike. There we go. We got all right. I hear I am So your items are doing incredible as I mentioned, you know, this show We've seen more bidding and activity on the WIP midday show Keep your bidding because these are amazing guys to hang out with who love making a difference I just solicited them to volunteer for an event in London. Yes, we're working now. We get to London. They're now on duty Yeah, I'm not I'm not I'm not opposed to that but you can't get too close because I don't want the alcohol to be oozing out of it This is this is a Pop the name for kids with autism Okay, we'll go to pub after one thing at a time here You can bring your fidgets and give them to people put them in the sensory bags. That'll be amazing. Yeah

Can I put them on the plane? I can bring you to see why not? Well, because I got a bunch of enjoy Going through customs with fidgets But we do of course our Sitting you can sit in with us. You could also we'll go to you which is always a cool one. We did a couple of good guys though Yeah, he wants to someone to correct. Yeah, I mean we don't we don't mind going to your home I don't think we've ever done that we went a couple businesses the last couple years And just hang out man. We are fun top well Joseph fun time Joseph fun time here. You're fun. Joseph talk to me. I'm a little more you know, it takes me a while to warm up That's okay. We have plenty time for our chef fun time So Ryan tell us about some of the bigger items and what people could bid on yeah, so we have lots of fun items available We've seen a lot of activity recently on Dom where if you want to go to angelos the lore of angelos and cheese steaks and pizza there He's gonna take you there tell you what to order get you a proper Filly cheesecake the strength and conditioning we talked about this you in our meeting Yes, you can work out you could actually do an Eagles workout. You can go into the lot I'm assuming it's in the Eagles locker room right where was it? Who's there? Jay Glazer? He was glazing the city

Yeah, he was glazed across the city and he worked out in the locker room You could go in there you'll go in workout like an Eagles player you'll go through a physical you know Training with our strength and conditioning coach. What does it take to be an NFL player? Yeah, I know those workouts And you gotta I remember as I remember them there. They're short intense workouts. Yes And and with the technology that they have now they can tell you exactly where you are as far as your fitness goals And I'm sure they can track all the analytics and measure and that'll be a great baseline Yeah, it's quite it feels like it would be a very fun and humbling experience for a regular person a lot of people Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, but we talked about London you being there There's a London trip in radio thon right now. Yes very reasonable trip I think it's about $9,000 and that's not that's not bad Like on location they're a partner with the NFL they kindly donated this the Eagles provided two lower level seats to the game So you can be in the action, you know Travel go to pubs meet up with you Yeah, we're gonna be at a put well, we're gonna after we take care of business right after we take care of business

That's a fun perk walking around a night of ways that Hugh Douglas over there. It's gotta be Hugh Douglas Yeah, I mean the super bowl trip. That's affordable right now. It's an L.A. Who doesn't want to go to L.A. The stadiums incredible So that's available. So I think there's something for everyone We have trips with the team. We have experiences with our players We have running out of the tunnel So what that experience is is when team the team's introduced You're going to run out on the field during the Yeah, yeah, that is true the cheerleaders to the flag and then you'll hold the flag for the anthem and get to stay on the field So that's a really special experience. That's really cool, man. That is really really it's very intense I every time I've I've shared that experience with someone There's so much excitement and just nerves because you're in the dark hallway with the lasers going in the smoke The players seem so big because they have their equipment on and their helmets and and there you are And you're running running out straight onto the field. This is really cool You know what it's funny about it is like I don't I can't think of any other organization that that offers All of these different things that you can do that is so team-centric like just being around a team and getting to know these guys

Oh, yeah, and I think it really it's the culture Jeffrey Laurie This is important to him along with super bowls And so when we look at the organization and how do we leverage that and our fandom our passionate fans who are willing to donate or support in any way and we create these magical moments and I think that's what's been amazing and so whether it's A player let experience where they said I want to go fishing or you know last year we had a peloton item We have all these unique things Or it's running out of the tunnel or going into the fan tunnel high-fiving players before the game There's so many special things Pulling up the net for the field goals. That's one of those. That's a cool one pretty good. It's a lot of Tony Leonard in the ground screw I'm letting us meet that yeah The game day experience there's so much with it you get four tickets to four passes to the pregame tailgate and Who we missed this earlier you get to come to our pregame show right there And lead the Eagles chance. Yeah, we always pick a fan to do the Eagles chance Yeah, and that's a big job right because you got to get the whole crowd pumped up So you know the most important job someone to some would say that It you got it absolutely and you get to be that person lead the Eagles chance So we're excited about all this Eagles radio thon.com Ryan.
