On May 1st, a massive Moreland fire broke out a snake-pass summit in the Peak District last night, around 8.50 a.m. on April 30th. It's been raging for over 12 hours now, covering about 1,500 meters by 300 meters of land near the A57 road. Fire crews jumped on it right away and have been fighting it nonstop. This morning, five fire engines are on scene with water carriers, a command unit, welfare support, and a rural vehicle. They're teaming up with the Fire Operations Group and Derby Mountain Rescue to contain it. Earlier this week, the Peak District Moreland Group joined in, sharing footage of flames pushing through dry moss. Smokes billowing thick, hitting residents across greater Manchester from Tameside and Oldham, to Stockport, even as far as Little Halton and Atherton. Folks nearby got told to seal windows and doors and everyone smelling that heavy haze. Visibilities down bad on local roads too. Meanwhile, dry weather and moderate winds are drying up the ground more and spreading the fire faster.
Derbyshire Police say the A57 stays open, but no parking at the summit or on Verges. Follow emergency instructions to keep things safe. Crews are pushing hard to get this under control, so steer clear if you're in the area and stay tuned for updates as they battle the blaze.
