Miss Fancy's Glowing Return to Avondale Park

A bronze statue of Miss Spancy, the famous elephant from Birmingham's original zoo, has gotten a fresh upgrade in Avondale Park. Local resident Leslie Smuckler tracked down the long-forgotten piece in a warehouse under Legion Field and worked with city parks to bring it back. Now tucked in an alcove near the library, it honors the 8,000-pound Indian elephant who starred at the zoo from 1913 to 19, 30 Fougar. Miss Spancy was no ordinary zoo resident. Her handler gave her whiskey for arthritis and she became known for escaping her enclosure over a dozen times, even roaming to Red Mountain. Locals still share stories of her nighttime parades where she peek into second story windows, making her a true celebrity in the magic city. Her legacy lives on in Birmingham culture.
