Michigan's HAIL MARY Stunner! + LSU CRUSHES Clemson

0:00All right. Welcome to the ESPN college game day podcast. I'm Dan Wetzel joined by ESPN's Bill Conley and Max Olsen. I am going to endeavor to get this podcast done in 60 minutes. Michigan gets two cracks at the Hail Mary. Bryce Underwood delivers a quite dramatic one on the second.

1:00You got to give him credit, falling away, getting hit 60 yard pass and touchdown. Michigan wins 1312. But the all the focuses on this clock that on the NBC feed appeared to hit zero on the first Hail Mary. But by the second, but they were then went to a different clock apparently gave him one second back. And then they got a second one. This did not, did not satisfy the masses. About two hours later, the big 10 came out with a statement. Max Olsen, what, what the heck happened in Ann Arbor on Saturday night? My wife and I were watching this and they were just showing the shots of like the very stolen Bryce Underwood and Kyle Woodingham in that little interim period where they were viewing before the second Hail Mary. And just like, oh, man, that really, really sucks those guys have to sit with this feeling for another five minutes. And then instant emotional whip lash on both sides of the ball there. That was unreal. I, of course, was just like, there's no way.

2:06There's absolutely no way, you know, you can't convince me that they had another second. And it is a little, can you explain that to the listener in case they just went to bed angry, Dan and kind of miss the miss the late night tweets from the big 10 and from the Mac. So I think the, you know, it's important to note the Mac kind of accepted the outcome here too. But can you explain what the big 10 put forth or sort of shift? I suppose it's fair to say they kind of shifted the blame or the confusion towards NBC in the scenario. They definitely did. First off, it took like two hours to get a statement, which is never a good sign. And they should have come out immediately and just said, hey, that clock on NBC wasn't the clock we were using. Or we'll, we'll, we'll detail it all later, but our clock is different than there, whatever it was. When it takes two hours in this, in this era, everything goes. Everyone's taken their conspiracy theories. Everyone's broken down the film. I mean, it was, it was incredible on social media. Well, especially when you got other leagues who do it live now, right? And just show

3:10you. Yeah, the ACC right in. This was bad. The big 10 finally puts out a statement. It is oddly written in a font and color. It was like stranger things kind of like if you're, you know, that showed stranger things like 80s. I don't know what this was. It's, it's hard to read just visually. But basically what they're saying is as shown in the provided video, which they show, what was viewed during the replay process, a side by side view of the play and the game clock clock using a direct shot of the game clock in the stadium was used to determine the final ruling. That's what they, that's what they wrote. 85 minutes prior to the game, all broadcast cameras used for the replay system, including the game, the camera on the game clock are synced using a strobe system to ensure all cameras are aligned. So what they're saying is their clock was the actual game clock in the stadium,

4:16whatever NBC was using, we don't know. And that was a different clock or something. Now they put out this video, the NBC had said during the game, that was the game clock in the stadium. They later put out a video of the guys discussing it, the replay guys and they had a clock that said one second. Now that clock looked like, I think it looked like, maybe it's just me, but it could have been the microwave and Tony Petiti's kitchen. Like I thought I saw some hot pockets going around. I don't know why this clock came from. But or it's the official clock. I don't know. Basically, though, what the big 10 is saying is their clock was right. The NBC one was wrong without saying it. Because I mean, NBC does pay pretty good amount of money for this. NBC at this time has had no statement. So if I'm the big 10, I'm pretty angry at NBC because this whole thing would have been fine. If we had seen the right clock and you'd be like, okay, there was

5:18one hundreds of a second left, but that's how we do things in football. I don't know. Bill, did I surmise that? I get that right. Yeah, I mean, the sync was obviously the first problem here, especially when you've got the NBC guy on the air afterwards saying, this is all synced. So I don't know what they saw here. This was a terrible call. And then yeah, it's that video existed of the officials like reviewing it and everything. You have to get it out within like five minutes of the game. It exists. So put it out. And that would have, again, we don't know which one was technically right technically. So they wouldn't have ended all conspiracy theories or whatever. But man, you have to do yourself a favor and rush that video out because at the very least it shows what the replay officials were using and how they reached the clock is on the field. You see one replay after the game. And yeah, you think they're just making Michigan suffer because it's an obvious calling. It was obviously game over. And you had this other secret clock that was different. And

6:22it played out as horribly as possible for for the big tenant NBC and everybody involved. Does that explain it, Max? I think so, Bill, when you when you put out SP plus, I want to see you, can you do that big 10 font with the, that looks like a paperback horror. They just wait a minute. Tools now. So I might be able to figure something out with an unreadable font that'll that'll make people less mad at SP plus, right? If they can't really tell what they're looking at. This is actually a decent idea. This is an important statement. Let's make it as unreadable as possible. This this better show up in that big 10 commercial where all the can't all the things pop up on the map. Like we need like one second on the clock. I mean, this, I don't know. They were I mean, the jokes, the whole thing. My favorite was Brian Fagan, who was in the kind of the NIL space he founded some companies and his quote was remarkable statistic. Prior to Western Michigan, college football teams were 110,352 and zero when leading after the end of regulation dating back to 1869. That is one way to look at it.

7:25I don't know. I mean, the Mac accepted it. Tremendous grace from the Western Michigan delegation coach on down. There would have been a temporary restraining order in most leagues filed immediately a judge in Kalamazoo would have ruled that that game was over. I looked us up, Dan. Are you going over to the eighth district court today? You think to see him see what the vibe is? Yeah. We'll see. They got an emergency Sunday morning session. So I guess NBC screwed up and if that's that's the narrative of going. But I mean, that is a big mess. I mean, there was a lot of anger. And you know, if you're Michigan, you've Western Michigan, you just feel crushed because you feel like you got cheated and maybe it didn't. If you're Michigan, everyone's accusing you of cheating, of course. I mean, there's all these pictures of Connor Stallions and the clock booth. I mean, it was it was great entertainment if you didn't care. But like, well, they didn't cheat.

8:28Like I get apparently they didn't do anything. Everything was, I mean, nothing happened apparently. They just end be, um, this is, I don't know. This is not not how you want to do it. And I mean, we only technically know that the big 10 had the right clock. We don't completely know who was right in that situation. But I, you know, and it is funny, like, regardless, Michigan looked like crap for 59 point nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine minutes of that game. And, um, you know, this could end up if Western Michigan's defense really is that good. It was good last year, but it lost everybody. So I kind of figured there might be a step backwards. If they have that good in defense, they could have been in the playoff conversation for a long time with a, with a win over Michigan. So it is hard. I again, I guess technically they got the right call as far as we know, but it is, it's still kind of hard to swallow. Yeah. I was prepared, guys, to have a beautiful conversation with you about Dieter Kelly, the juco backup kicker for Western Michigan. It comes into the big house and subs in and scores all the points in a win. But that is the,

9:30that is the beauty college football can change on time. He came in. He came in. He came, he was the backup. Yep. Yeah. And I love this kid. He transferred in from San Mateo, Jr. College in California. Like he went juco at a high school to be a kicker. Like you're at that kids grad party and you're like, what's the plan next year? You know, accounting, fine. Now I'm going to try to become a kicker going to juco. You know, you're like, okay, live in the job. Gotta follow your dreams. Not not a great. And then ends up at Western and he's going to win the game. Doesn't happen. I don't know. Go ahead, Max. It does. It is very funny at the end of that. Everybody's like storing the field and celebrating and and Bryce, Bryce Underwoods never looked happier and more cockier in his life. Michigan offense outside of the between the between the first drive and the last drive guys, eight drives, 31 plays, 111 yards, 34 passing yards from Bryce Underwood. Kind of felt

10:34like last year was a year or zero for Bryce Underwood. And now we're kind of in year one a little bit with this staff. It reaffirmed every single fear I had about like I love Jason Bex Offense, watched it in Mexico and Utah kind of saw it come together where Virginia, I guess before that Syracuse, like it was it's a really, really fun offense if you have a quarterback who is willing to run a lot and make really good reads. And it was like Underwood wasn't making a single read in that game. He was just hand in the ball off. Just doesn't seem like he sees the field. And it's pretty shocking to watch. Just the number of times he rolled out about time and then through to a guy who was completely blanketed by another defender, it's it's pretty alarming and not just because maybe the offense isn't a good fit. So yeah, first game. So whatever we'll see. But that was a horrible first step. But when they go back out there because they miss the officials missed that running into the punter, which which would have helped West Michigan quite a bit. But when they Bryce Underwood goes out there in that spot, I think there's three minutes left. It's like no one's

11:39they're not even really getting letting him run the or throw the ball like nobody feels good about our chances here. And then he does fumble and West Michigan gets that ball. And man, the wild cat on third down just killed him. In terms of clock management and being able to go finish that drive. Sad deal for West Michigan team that just did it just enough right to really steal that one. Yeah. Yeah. And you just get those chances. Seeing those players disappointed in Lance Taylor coach after that's a good team though. But yeah, Michigan Underwood struggling. I could see coming the offensive line being that bad. I did not you take the general personnel that Michigan has and it's offensive line for the last century or so. And you give it to Kyle Wittingham and they couldn't run the ball. I thought this would be a good running team. And that one there. So boom or sooner is coming next week. And there is a ton of work to do and in Arbor. And it seemed that other than

12:42the immediate jubilation that somehow they want a football game, which I'm fine with kids storm in the field and stuff like have fun like whatever. I mean, you're not going to have a lot of perspective when you're 19 and you had too many sun cruisers on whether or not what's the proper etiquette here should we storm a I mean, it's a little embarrassing storm the field on a MAC team. But you know, if this is the worst decision that the young people of Ann Arbor made last night, then let's let's go with it. But the vibes if if it's just the Hail Mary out of bounds game over. I mean, the vibes in Michigan right now are yeah, just awful. It is like who's excited about the rest of the season? Yeah, they're not good either way. I don't think anyone's sugarcoat in this. The simple fact that the game that day that there was a 20 play 13 minute drive in the big house in a Michigan versus MAC team game and it wasn't Michigan doing it to kill the clock at like up 40 points. Shock it. Like I'm sure to just enter right there like you just gave up a 20 yard

13:43field goal drive. It's over. You're we're going home now, but they got one more chance I guess. All right, we'll be back with LSU and Clemson after this break. All right, Lane Kiffin's LSU debut couldn't have gone much better. They went in court, then they take the long view say we're going to not start our pro players. Not going to play them because we're we're under a considerable threat with the SEC and also we didn't need them. Tigers turned kind of the marquee game of Saturday, a visit from Clemson. Remember them historic power that's fallen on hard times. They beat him 51 to 10. Sam 11, four touchdowns that transfer from ASU. Worse loss in the history of Davos scene, Sweeney's career. And at halftime Lane tells ESPN's Holly Row, it took everything for me not to say imagine we had pro players. Now it was great as

14:49he's acting like he didn't say that on camera. Maybe he thought the interview was over, but not really. Get your popcorn ready. Bill, the party in the bayou despite all the rain couldn't have gone much better for LSU. Yeah, and I mean, they looked really good. The thought of Lane Kiffin offense plus a Blake Baker defense was pretty tantalizing. That jobs weird and it couldn't go in any number of directions obviously, but it just on paper, you could really talk to yourself into LSU, having a pretty high quality team. Blake Baker defense looked better than a Blake Baker defense ever has felt like they had 14 guys on the field against Clemson's offense. I was really struggling to get past how ridiculously hapless Clemson's offense looked. So we'll obviously plenty of challenges for LSU coming up. We'll we'll know plenty about that, but my goodness, like there were struggling to execute a handoff. Vizino was throwing directly to LSU defenders. It was about as bad as possible and it certainly allowed me to get captured by confirmation bias when it came to

15:54hating the Chad Morris higher that he made to fix his offensive coordinator by hiring his old offensive coordinator who hasn't had a good offense in 10 years. It just all it was the worst possible step and we're used to Clemson taking pretty bad steps to start the season. I agree with you on the defense. I mean, certainly as the game went on, they flash a lot of new toys on offense. But to see healthy way weeks, he looked like an all American last night. I mean, he was just in the backfield on stop. I thought the the third down where they drop their 255 pounded Russia from Tennessee Jordan Ross and you know, Vizino throws it right to him and he houses it. That was just like, okay, they got you know, you saw you saw Prince will looks like he's leveled up in badgers like they've just they got a lot of freaks on that defense and you know, we can certainly get to the problems that that Clemson created for themselves. But yeah, I think that got that Blake Baker. Yeah, I think he told the broadcast crew, okay, I've got the I've got the personality for this defense. Yeah, it certainly looks like it. And then offensively it looks like, you know, they took so many guys in

16:58the portal, but the one that kind of flew into the radar a little bit, you know, Dylan Jones only ran for 300 yards last year at Wisconsin. It looks like he's their next key one, Lacey. In terms of how he he went out there and I heard of the being in August, he had won that RB one spot like already going into fall camp. Like I think that's that's that's looking like another steal they have it running back. And then when you take the running element of Sam Levit, who was just on fire last night, yeah, they're they're going to want a lot of games this year guys. So I take two two things from this game. And this was one of the the bits with this entire aggressive pursuit of trying to bring in some guys that got cut from NFL teams. It's kind of two angles on this one, you don't need like what like I wouldn't like that team. Yes, we're going to get to Clemson and how bad they look, but this looked like they were beating a sun belt team. This was a complete annihilation. And it's still an ACC team and it is still a brand name ACC team. How good this team is do you ever want to

18:01mess with the chemistry the bit? Do you need all this stuff? And there's the risk reward. Do you ever play them when you could lose at some point and court down the line and suffer a half season suspension for Kiffin a huge fine for the program loss of voting rights? Why do all this? On the flip, you can also sit there and say, boy, LSU might be good enough to win the national title. And what if they need a little bit more of that bump and and Lane's not going to like most people in in sports is never going to never going to resist adding just a little bit more talent. So I think it kind of it reaffirms both arguments here. Do you go for broke here in year one? And this is literally potentially broke by playing these guys that got the the TRO or whatever legal deal they got or do sit there and say, man, we're stacked. We're good. We're good here. Thanks guys, but we're not going to do it. So there's a lot to go with with LSU on that. Anything on that before we get to Clemson? Yeah, I mean, Dick one, Dick one writes, you know, very good tight end. He's not,

19:06he'd be their second best tight end. So it was the idea of risking it all for a backup or for a second stringer wasn't never made a lot of sense to me, but you're right. I mean, there's nothing this team on paper can't be capable of with what we saw in week one. And so, you know, what if what if a starter or two gets hurt and you need that what if trade as green, this is half the season or whatever, because there's got to be plenty tricky enough. So I get it, but also unless you just receive some sort of finality here over the next couple weeks, I don't think it's worth it to try. No, I think we'll probably see like I think Junior Tulio Mock and the guy the only guy who did they were able to add the defensive afternoon. He'll probably be a 1015 snap guy and this defense, right? I mean, I think that's probably, you know, Xavier Harris has got to play his way back into shape. And, you know, I think I know Dekuan Wright said he practiced a couple times, but it's sort of like, yeah, I don't think even if they were to get the golden ticket here and you guys can come in, no penalties, I don't think

20:06it's going to make that that big of a swing. And I think they knew that. I also think the reality is just that they ran out of time. I think if if all of this stuff had started going down in June and not August, you know, first of August, you know, I think a lot of teams would have been doing what else she was doing. I think a lot of them just looked at it and say, we're in camp. We don't have time to mess with this stuff and, you know, help these guys lawyer up and, you know, tailor these TROs and all that kind of stuff. And so, yeah, I think probably that it was more of a time element than anything. You know, Lane Kiffon can say, oh, I think I'm doing right by these guys and I'm sure there is an argument for that. But, you know, I think ultimately they, I think the guy said the point on Friday and just said, man, not only is Juice not not worth the squeeze here, but it's time to time to go play football. Yeah, these guys might want to go somewhere else. I don't know. If I'm sitting there watching them saying, man, I got I got cut from the NFL and I got cut from LSU with the same week. I need a new judge. Clemson.

21:0638 first downs for LSU, eight for Clemson. 644 total yards for LSU, 145 for Clemson. There isn't a stat one for 13 on third down. Didn't you didn't try on fourth? Just a total disaster and every facet of the game for the Tigers, Davo, the best thing about that one is that it's over. We got our asses kicked on and on, which, I don't know what else you would say, completely savage by Lane Kiffin. I mean, Lane Kiffin has so many good quotes. This isn't even his best quote. You know, I didn't expect their offense to be that dysfunctional said Lane Kiffin. Our scout team scored more than they did against us. You think Lane was listening to two Clemson file a protest and and Davo saying this is embarrassing.

22:07During the week, my goodness, they went for two LSU went for two at one point up. I don't know, what was the score? I think they had like 45 trying to get to 46 or something like that. Yeah. Kiffin was like, yeah, I don't know if she thought one was in the book. I could be wrong, but he analytics on that. Go for it. That was the analytic of your, I'm going to humiliate you. Where is this program? I mean, I get that I get that I don't know. I mean, Clemson is just cannon fodder at this point. I mean, this has gone from we're not as good as we were. We're not national contenders, but we do it the right way to we're going to get completely humiliated. In the biggest game of the week, that's what Clemson is at this point. Where are we going, Bill? Yeah. I mean, this is it was the line play that was the most shocking on both sides of the ball. I mean, Clemson, there's been plenty of times when their offensive line was fine, but unamazing. They couldn't block anybody in the defensive line. LSU running just kind of almost

23:10making a point to run the way they were running and not really have to take any chances with the past. Like that's a that was that was quite the statement. We know what they lost from last year's team in terms of defensive line talent, but they still have blue chippers there. They still have guys who should be able to do more than they did. And it was I like and again, I'm admitting this is confirmation by a Senate title sample in Clemson has looked terrible to start a season and then has improved throughout. But hiring Chad Morris means you've quit coming up with new ideas. And that was an offense that had no ideas and then couldn't execute the basic ideas either. And you know, when he hired Garrett Riley made a big show, but had to pay a lot of money to get him from TCU and then basically said before the first game, well, he's still running the Clemson offense. Like what? So in this way, I guess it saved money to just got hire a guy who you knew was going to run the Clemson offense and wasn't going to cost as much, but it was just kind of wasting everybody's time here when if you're not going to really try to field your best program at this point and they're

24:13not. Yeah, I think it's it's hard to even say like, hey, here's the evaluation of Chris Vazina and Tate Reynolds off that game. Like that that tape doesn't really do anything for you for either side. And I think it's also probably a waste of time to say, well, hey, man, this is yeah, they made a mistake not going to the portal to get a guy like Chandler Morris was not going to go score 20 points on that LSU team last night, right? I mean, it was not going to make a difference in terms of of that outcome. I did hear from agents and GM's like in November, December that like Clemson was kind of making calls around kind of looking around, trying to figure it out. See if there was something that that made sense for them. Obviously, they ultimately didn't find one, but to me, I think it's really right, but it's not it's not even really about that. Like when you're when the O line and D line gets whipped to the extent that it did to the point that former Clemson players are on Twitter saying like, yeah, it's the worst I've ever seen, right? And these guys are used to the standard of Clemson being a D line factory. They're used to the standard of, you know, next man up on the offensive line. These we always have NFL guys. Yeah, it just doesn't

25:14it nowhere close. It wasn't like the QBs were just missing little plays here and there and if they'd hit them, then then this offense is cooking like there was no answers for what else he was doing on either side of the ball. Yeah, we've moved past the just add four or five guys in the portal, you know, and that'll that'll you know, fill some gaps. The whole thing was a gap last night. I don't know what's going to happen with Clemson. They do normally get better. It is Davos Swini, but look, they have a they have Georgia Southern coming in this week, which is kind of a, you know, get right game, but it's still Georgia Southern. That's not that I based on what we saw last night take nothing for it. Then they have North Carolina, which is just fascinating. Um, the impact is that Max Jackson coming to town for Georgia Southern. Yeah, Max Johnson coming to sound. So that is going to be I'm not I don't think you can just be like, I they got that. Then they're at Cal and then they got Miami. Like by October 3rd. Oh, like we'll see, but this isn't getting a lot

26:17easier there. If Georgia Southern or Carolina that we don't know how good they are, but they are as bad as they were is your is your breathers. Uh, this could get really, really, uh, ugly for Clemson really quick. And I don't know. They they got a long way to go. There was virtually nothing you could take from that game last night that suggested anything good. All right. Well, I remember we go ahead. Didn't we do this? I mean, we've been doing this for a few years now, but 24 Georgia destroyed them to open the season. Right. Just no no chance. Made the plan. I was trying to try to jump my memory like, okay, what happened in that year? That was the year they got into the ACC title game, wanted to play off, lost the Texas in the first round. Like they still ended up having the year they wanted to have this, this time feels different though. This felt like more. I think we were talking about how they got exposed in that Georgia game and they still rolled to a fine season. This doesn't. I don't know that there's a lot you'd say like this is the same as 24. Fair enough. They were a playoff team.

It was good to see a good game out of California for for change. Cal led early UCLA scored the final 21 points, including three touchdowns in the fourth. Uh, it was a tight game, but it turned out to be 45, 24 statement win for Bob Chesney in his first game after coming over from James Madison. He had a whole bunch of transfers from James Madison, a doing work way night in particular. Boy, where have we seen this James Madison transfers, uh, make statements right away deal. Um, Bill

28:18thoughts on UCLA with a, uh, big, uh, intrastate victory over Cal Berkeley. Yeah. I was kind of disappointed if only because I thought this would just looked like an extreme toss up heading in. And I wanted to see a really nice pack 12 after dark style, uh, dramatic game. And, and you see, like kind of put it into that. Obviously it was close until the fourth quarter, but, um, it was still good. I mean, yeah, why night was so good at jam you last year. I always kind of felt like jam you got short shrift in terms of sentiment. Like they were just obviously not good enough for the playoff when they were better than two lane all season among other things. But, um, like, there are extremely talented night looked good. Anthony Woods, um, you know, looked very explosive. And he's a return. He's not even a, uh, transfer. So, uh, it's just, you know, for all we know, Bob Chesney's a really, really good head coach and does a really nice job of taking what he has and making the most out of it. Obviously, I think Holy Cross, uh, up, it's recruiting a little bit when he was there and what they can offer and whatnot, but in his FCS days. But he's still,

29:18that's a hard job. And he built the top 10 FCS program there. So really good. Take the ingredients and cook something awesome with it guy and that looked pretty awesome down the stretch. Could you guys talk yourselves into, like I was just saying, their schedule, the ranked teams they get in the big 10 are Oregon USC and the currently ranked Michigan Wolverines. Yeah. Is, could you talk yourself into a little like, is this, could they, could they make a Siggar one Indiana run? You see, like, suddenly instantly relevant in this big 10 race? There's schedule sets up for it. Um, they have one of the weaker schedules in the big 10. And, and obviously it's weaker, but it's still, you know, at Oregon USC, maybe Michigan's improved by then and it's an Ann Arbor. So it's not like it's an easy schedule. But say at a state, Purdue at Maryland in the next three and then after Oregon, the US consummation state Nevada, who, who did look great last night? But I'm guessing won't, won't be, uh, upper half of the big 10 caliber. Um, like the road slate outside of Orkins really nice. And um, it's, it's not out of,

30:23there's, there's, there were quite a few teams that sure seem to hit on the, with the portal a lot and not all of those teams will end up looking like an Oklahoma state certainly didn't. But, um, you know, the every year the whole transfer of Hail Mary thing's gonna hit for a couple teams. And it's, and for all we know, you see a one of them. I'm willing to be talked in anything after this. I mean, they played great. I mean, yeah, the schedule's there. Even if they lose to Oregon, um, you know, the, the possibility of them, you know, walk, we'll see what Michigan, who knows what Michigan's going to be by the end of November. But the idea that they're walking into late November with that Michigan USC deal with nine eight or nine wins is, and ranked is absolutely possible. The running attack was terrific. Woods 118. I mentioned night 71. Woods had two touchdowns. Nighthead three. Iamali Ava, Nika, Niko Iamali Ava, the quarterback had one. Um, he didn't throw for a touchdown. But he only had to throw 22 times. He's a great athlete and give him a running

So, UCLA is a bit of for bit formidable. And it's amazing. They, they were to their AD. And part of it is they have financial problems. So he's the guy that hired Bob Chesney. And if you start winning in football, your financial problems don't necessarily go away at UCLA, but they get, they get a lot lighter because nothing excites people like that. So if I'm, if I'm a UCLA fan, I am absolutely thrilled right now at what this is and what the schedule is and the fact that they, they could add all these pieces with Iamali Ava in place. Uh, there's just a lot of potential. I think going on on that. Yeah. I mean, tie game there in the fourth and their ability to run the ball and control the end of that game against Cal. I thought was really impressive. It was good to hear on the broadcast early on. We night gets a carry and they said what the announcer said, hello Newman. 32:28Williams is 17 or, uh, I don't know, what was it? A couple of roommates at Texas. So I love back in the day, you know, you get the same McCoy Shipley roommates, of course. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. McCoy and Shipley roommates. What? So nowadays these guys have roommates. They're in like a five bedroom, uh, center door colonial, uh, on a cold. Yeah. That's not quite what it seems to be. Yeah. That's true. They each have their own mini and Mcmatchins. So it's surprising when they have roommates now. It's not like they're in a brick dorm there in Austin. Uh, Oregon Boise State was, uh, was terrific. Uh, probably the best game of the that time slot. Uh, number two ducks trail that half time. Uh, but Boise State came rolling back. Uh, I mean, I'm sorry, trail that half time Oregon came rolling back. Dante Moore was spectacular. Three 78, three touchdowns, including this dramatic 62 yard pass, uh, pass run, stop, cut, run touchdown from

33:31Decorian Moore, more to more to win it. Uh, great test for the ducks. Boise looked terrific. Uh, Boise gets a lot of mileage out of almost beating Oregon, but given credit, uh, this is a couple years ago. They did that. But, um, both teams look really, really, really pretty good. It was, it was a good game and we needed good games on, on, on week one, uh, Bill. Yeah. No, I mean, um, it kind of reaffirmed the, the strengths that we thought Boise State had, Maddox Madsen is very experienced and sound, um, too good running backs on love, side of games. Um, you know, you had some fumble issues at times last season and got hurt, I think at least once. Um, but really nice one, two punch in the backfield. Um, and, and you know, they were able to spread the ball around. They had some solid receiving targets that defense made plays early less so, uh, in the second half, when so Oregon's skill core really got rolling, but they did such a good job of tackling. That was, I thought one of the major things was every time it looked like Oregon was about to break a big play, it only went for like nine yards because of the good tackling and then of course, Oregon wins

34:31the game by two tackers running into each other because De Cori Moore, uh, juked him out of their shoes. So it ended up making the difference, but they made Oregon play really well, especially in the second half to beat them and, you know, play like that 12 more times. You're gonna go 12 and one. Yeah, and I thought, I thought when it came into it, like it was good to see Oregon get a real stress test like that. Um, obviously not many teams did yesterday and I thought when it came down to it, it props to to Boise for fighting as long as they did. I think the Oregon D line, especially the edges, they just really, it was just, but you get to the fourth quarter and those guys are just kind of whipping you like you get into these third downs and it's just really hard to stop. And as, as I love the Oregon detacles, you know, I'm worried watching in in Barrel Xander, I think are, you know, really high level guys, but you really saw the difference with, uh, Tuyoti and, and with Ui Young and Lole and just the way that those guys could get after you. And so, makes sense that that would be kind of the difference there as great that the Boise, you know, made it as close to the kid. And honestly, guys, I thought in generally speaking, I thought the G5

35:34acquitted themselves pretty well in some of these games. Obviously Central Michigan was zero seconds away from from winning against Michigan. Um, why is Toles over a Oklahoma state? I mean, Bill, you alluded to it, but that was, it was not close. Uh, that was a, that was an easy win for, for Toles in a lot of ways. And then of course, Dan got the Tulsa shirt. We got, uh, William Watson, the third, also known as pop against Rutgers. Yeah. I thought Watson would get run at Virginia Tech last year and they didn't trust him enough apparently because he granted, I mean, he, arm strength, not, not the most amazing thing you've ever seen, but he ran that offense. They were Chris Ball day. That was, that was incredible to watch. Well, as the UMass alum here, I mean, we had a little dry spell, little dry spell, uh, had beaten anybody since 2024 with no FPS wins since 2023. I mean, a G fed snuck into the stadium and declared it a junkyard, which was kind of the highlight

36:35of, uh, for about eight months there because the fans were allied. Uh, pop Watson from Springfield mass comes back. He should have played three touchdowns against Rutgers. It was great. It was the first game of the year. I think it was like it's six o'clock Rutgers was trying everything. Um, UMass wins two, two things on this. One, my favorite post game was the New Jersey Republican assembly. So the, basically the Republicans in New Jersey, the politicians put out a, a social media post blaming Rutgers loss to UMass apparently on the Democrats or big government or something. Like losing to UMass is now political fodder. Quote, New Jersey taxpayers gave five million in the state budget to Rutgers for events, attraction and marketing reporting to help compete in the NIL law arms race. Last night Rutgers lost a UMass. And they said, uh, they went through all the stats.

37:37Rutgers paid UMass at 1.5, five, five million to show up and beat them. Your tax dollars at work. I mean, you know how great it is when your team upsetting another team is political fodder. I mean, that's just great stuff. So I don't know vote vote how you want. If that's going to help Rutgers, we don't get political here. It's people really, apparently, you, you mass deserves to be ranked. They went on the road, what a powerful game dominated the game. You mass deserves to be ranked. Not number two or three or something, but they just, if you just, if you just line up, who accomplished what this weekend, you mass deserves some votes in the top 25 poll and get them in now, please. 38:40first victory for Alex Golisch down at Auburn. Game was up in Atlanta and really great final, wild final minute back and forth. Auburn took a late lead. Baylor storms back. Nine seconds left. They, they get it to 17 16. They go for the win. If they've, uh, ran a credit, Eric Winters of Auburn makes a goal line tackle at the one inch line. Fantastic. Stop the two point try Auburn wins 17 16. Great, great game there. Max, thoughts on, on both of these teams and what could be going forward with them. Yeah. I mean, ugly in a bunch of ways. I, I thought with with DJ Lugway guys, like there's, you know, there's some really bad turnovers in that game, but there were some throws, especially down in that, in that, that final drive there that he was hitting and even the ones that were missing where it was like, yeah, you can, you can see it.

39:41Like there's, there's the five star. That's why he was ranked like that. Like there's, you can see the ingredients are there. And I'm excited to see what Jake's bad at all can do with him over the course of the season is they kind of figure out how to play to his strengths and, um, you know, you saw Gavin Freeman on the fourth, fourth and goal there. Um, you know, he was such a huge weapon for them. Uh, guy, it's bounced around a little bit, but, but a big get for, um, Baylor and man, it looked to, looked to me just on the throw. It looked to me like the tight end was going to get it. So just an incredible play by Eric Rivers and, you know, huge for, huge route, school, and obviously a lot to build on there. Um, but, you know, Byron Brown and, and that offense, I think, I think we'll be more productive, more explosive than that as we get going here. But, uh, Baylor is closest to gets. Yeah. This is one of those things where we don't know how good Baylor's defensive front is. So we don't know what to think about Auburn's run game and kind of back and forth after one game. But yeah, I think, uh, you know, Dave Miranda is pretty good with the analytics. He's, he's, he knows when to go for it. I'm for it down. He, I, I had no, I had no doubt he

Also, you know, if there is any doubts, just wanting this game to be over, um, one way or the other was probably pushed him over the top and going for two there. And then the ending was great. And, um, we did get, I don't think wherever, I am curious what, what Spavital and Lagway can do together over the course of the season. But there's a chance we just never get only the good DJ Lagway. We don't get the good without the bad. And we saw lots of votes over 60 minutes. Yeah, it was all there. DJ is so good at times, but like, like you guys said, too many things, uh, it was non competitive game on Friday night, but Miami 45 uh, Stanford six. I, how good, I mean, I have, I had them in our final four pre pre season, but, uh, Bill, your thoughts on, on the canes, just a complete dominating show of force. Yeah. I mean, the passing game, there were, there were a few teams, I'm not trying to write about this for my, for my Sunday piece, but there are a few teams that we can't tell if they, they might be bad at running the ball or if they just, it just didn't matter. They just didn't have to at all. Therefore, uh, because the pass was working so well. And I think the best thing you can say about Darian Mensa is even if you take out his passes to Malachai Tony, who was far to way the best player in the country, uh, in, in week one, even taking those passes out,

42:45he was still 15 for 18 for like 170 yards or something like that to everybody else, not, not just the best player in the country, apparently. So, um, just really nice. That was, I mean, Mensa is, you know, he showed a lot of big play potential in his previous stops. It felt like maybe there was a little bit more upside to Miami's offense than what we saw last year where it was mostly nipples. It worked, but it was still, you know, not a ton of chunk plays or anything like that. There were plenty of chunk plays in this one. And, um, it was, it was the nice first step. Stanford can throw the ball a little bit and so maybe it's not necessarily worrisome that they had a little success throw on the ball. Um, but yeah, it's, when, when you win that easily on the road to start the season, it's hard to, you have to try pretty hard to nitpick, I think. I'm fully, if, if we're heading in this direction, it fills us way after week one. I'm, I'm fully good with, um, Malakitoni and Jeremiah Smith doing a choir, so said 98, you know, Derby here for the Heisman, where both teams are just like, no, no, we're trying to win the Heisman with this guy this year and getting them the

43:49balls as much as evenly possible. Malakitoni looks like he's, he can't, maybe he'll find a judge, but he looks like he's ready to go the NFL next year for sure. And he's just a sophomore, like, I think, and that's not to take anything away from men, so we're saying who look great. Um, but I think those guys are just at a, at a different level than everybody else and, and they're flashing that right away. And I think you saw from Shannon Dawson, like Malakitoni led the, led the country in receiving yards on screens last year. The way that they, I think, I think Shannon Dawson's just going to be stunting on people all year long with the tools that he has in this offense and, and, you know, you, you can get the power run with Fletcher and with Marty Brown whenever you want, but, um, to have Barcai to have all these, these weapons and young receivers that are coming up to, like, I just think that offense is like, I, I, I don't know that there, I think they might be too loaded to kind of have that weird game like Louisville where you're like, what are you doing? How, how are you losing this? Yeah. The, I remember thinking late, a few times late last season, like, wow, just imagine what might happen if Malakitoni learns to run routes. Cause yeah, I mean, it really

44:53was just a lot of like, let's just quickly, quickly pitch it out to him and get him in space. And you know, first touchdown was on a perfect little, uh, double move and, uh, it looked great. And the best thing you can say about Tony too was Jeremiah Smith had eight catches for 151 yards and you're like, whoa, you're going to have to try a little harder than that if you want to keep up here. Yeah. The separation for Tony on his routes in that game from the, from the jump, it was ridiculous. They couldn't even, they just forget it nightmare. You know, they were watching on film. Imagine this. I mean, Jeremiah Smith almost went to Miami. Like, it was so close in that. I mean, they're both from South Florida, Tony and Smith. Can you imagine them? I like, you know, the, the combination, the linebacker is a Gideon Espin Lamprom, uh, from Bowling Green and then, uh, LaFao from Texas, both of them were dynamite, uh, Gideon ran a, uh, Fontanette from Vanitya, like I started, uh, Vannebilt starting safety, uh, really, really good. He was great, yesterday, uh, Thursday. And, um, uh, just the defense was super sound. Like there were, Albert Omen does a made plays. He, he looked pretty decent. Colorado made the stops and looked

48:04way better on the line of scrimmage than they had in a while and, and, and passing game looked much worse than I expected. I expected more passing and less running. It was kind of the opposite. Um, but then on the last drive, Lewis just shows up and, and engineers a perfect touchdown drive. So they definitely, it was very encouraging if you're a Colorado fan. Um, it wasn't just like one star transfer or whatever. It was a whole bunch of guys that seemingly made Colorado quite a bit better than last season. Well, I think your points are like totally right, Bill. I think the difference you see with this Colorado team versus maybe the first couple of years in the way they tried to build it was it's not, yeah, there's a bootcarter. There's some, some sort of high profile guys, but they're not just sort of chasing all these like sort of former blue chip SEC guys who can't get on the field somewhere. But hey, we think they're still probably really talented and, and we'll figure it out. And then those guys don't break through and, and they're gone after a year. Like I think they did a better job this year of finding, uh, the G five guys and, and the P four guys who are, who are, you know, proven starters. And, um, you know, I think that the roster build

Um, highlighting somebody who did really well this week. Max, you got a small sample Heisman. Uh, I got two. I got Nate Chepard, the running back at Duke ran for 222 and two touchdowns on 35k carries to beat two Lane. Um, he is a Louisiana kid who probably, you know, probably could be at LSU this year or somewhere else, but they kept him out of the portal at Duke. I think he's a top 10 running back in the sport and, you know, I don't think people really know much about him yet, but, um, even with with Mensaghan this year, I think he'll, he'll get a bigger spotlight. And then, guys, did you see some of these highlights from Camaro Taylor at Mississippi State last night?

Um, that if you go watch it, just completely effortless steps up into it with pressure in his face and, and throws a almost 60 yard pass, uh, perfectly in the basket. I think he's going to be, you know, just kind of like JKS last year where you're sort of like, I want to tune in just to kind of see this guy because he's so freaky. I think Mississippi State's got one of those at KB. Nice. Yeah. It's obviously cheating to save Malachi Tony since he was kind of, you know, he, he was far away the best to me, but yeah, we, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Outside of him, um, honestly, it probably, you know, he only threw 16 passes, but Josh Hoover, uh, in his first start full trying to fill enormous shoes goes 13, let's see, 13 for 16 for 231 and four scores. Indiana, how do we or the game against North Texas? Honestly, like the, the North Texas offense

And then Indiana got a little frustrated and seemed like bigger run lanes opened up as the game went on and they really weren't letting it in North Texas or Indiana put put them away for a little while. But every time it was time for Indiana to go scores, just thank like he just immediately drove them down the field through a big touchdown pass and, and moved on and they ended up pulling away eventually. 52:14Houston seven catches on 33 yards and a touchdown against Oregon State. That was a, um, that was a close game and it's a big win for Houston, 3320 over Oregon State. A lot expected a Houston this year. Can they contend? Can they, can they fight to be that real contender against Texas Tech who they, they face in a couple of weeks on a huge Friday night game. It's going to be really interesting and getting this win leads into that 533 yards in offense for, uh, for the, uh, Cougars, Connor Wegman played really well. 20 to 30 305, but they, they, they, they, they moved the ball against Oregon State. So, uh, I like seeing Houston do well and I'll give Amari Thomas the, uh, the small sample Heisman for, uh, sort of a team effort, uh, all right. He picked off a screen pass and he ran the ball all the way down to Bevo and, and tossed the ball to Bevo and Bevo's handlers. And I think we're always looking for new traditions here, uh, in this sport. I, I think, uh, you know, showing your love to, to Bevo and giving Bevo football, um, encouraging to see. Like the guys who just transferred in a senior's get senior day on the whole half a set, first 100%. I never forget my time that still hasn't happened yet here inside the horses. Senior day is lost.
