00Welcome everybody to a special crossover episode. It's the Taste Makers meets Mess Magnets. My name is great sleter. I'm not the Mess Magnet also, so Chris McKinnis is here. Chris on how you doing? Hello, I was about to say, we're the Mess Makers and then I realize I don't think that actually sounds like it's fun. It's bad. I don't know. Taste Magnets isn't good either. I don't think so. You know, they're both something. Taste Magnets. Well, we're going to talk about the Olympics, which I'm very excited. This is the thing I reached out to because mostly I think all of the curling stuff was happening. And I was like, a lot of mess here, Chris. I don't know if you saw the mess that was the curling. Yeah, so I just to get just to I want to set the scene properly here for both of us so that everybody just knows what they're going to get. Grace knows about sports. She's wonderful. She
01knows all about the sports and how all of these things are interrelated. I am not really a sports girly. I'm normally an Olympics girly with this year. I didn't really watch like hardly any of it at all. So I'm kind of here is like the town idiot. And Grace is going to explain this stuff to me. And then hopefully we'll all have a greater understanding of everything messy that happened at the Olympics this year. Yeah, I feel like there's some headlines in terms of like the stuff that I was most interested in. I feel like there was some fun stuff to be following at the Olympics, including some some ass. I do find you know, the Olympics in terms of how much I can watch sort of various. I do feel like this one was like not bad in terms of like the stuff would kind of start in the morning and then be sort of like over, you know, like as someone who works remotely, like having it on the background the whole time, but you weren't you weren't you weren't like I don't love the like curated like primetime replay step because I feel like I just see what happens
01already. But yeah, well, I mean, the time zone I think worked a lot better for you being on Eastern time or specific time makes a big big difference. So like, this was not a great Olympics for me like availability wise. What was the last was the last one, the last one was in Beijing, was it? No, that's like, the last that's like way long ago. Winter Olympics. Well, it would have been like 22. Beijing. Yeah, it was Beijing. But that's like Beijing is so far away that it almost circles back to being low key can be. Correct. Right. Right. Right. Yeah. There's a lot of like Asian winter because it was Tokyo before that. And then, and then what? And then so yeah, so many. Next time, unfortunately, the good and bad news the next time, it will be at a much more convenient time zone next time. But also, oh no, it's in the French Alps next time. I was thinking the next one was was Utah, but that's two Olympics from now.
06All I know is that when I lived in Calgary, we all voted in a referendum on if we should try to host Olympics. And I voted no. Yeah, I think, I think it's universally bad for a city to host the Olympics. I think it's like been, I think that's been like just studied. Yeah. Don't do it. Don't build. I love sports. Don't have your city build the stadium for your football team, your base, like vote no one that is bad. Like billionaires are just keeping all their money. It's bad. It's bad to do any of this. Yeah. It is bad. It's also like, I'm nervous because this year, obviously, it's like World Cup and World Cup is mostly happening in the States with some in Mexico and a little bit in Canada because Vancouver is also hosting a couple of games. And I'm just like, what's going to happen? Like, what? Why are we doing this? But then I saw people say that this past weekend being like, the US shouldn't be allowed to host the World Cup Canada will pick up the slack. And I was like, girl, where? Where would Canada be
08supposed to do that on like two months notice when it takes like 10 years to plan? First, yeah, there was a whole thing. I'm actually just this year. I'm now going to be a part-time season takeer holder for the Toronto FC. And the amount of like, so my friend has been one. And so I'm like sort of inheriting with him some of the tickets. The amount of like controversy over like the rebuilding of that state, like the renovations to that stadium to like try to accommodate the World Cup. It's like a nightmare. And there's no way we could just like, yeah, also add a bunch more games. So, no, so few games are actually happening in Canada. Like, so few games are happening here. And it is causing a massive disruption across two separate provinces. Let alone the vast majority of games are happening across the USA. So like, I'm begging people to please be serious once again. But that's anyway. So I put it against the Olympics in Calgary. And now I'm like, oh, well, wherever it happens, it happens. You know, yeah. So, yeah, the French Alps apparently next time,
09which is, that sounds lovely. That sounds fine. And then, and then Utah. But, okay, Milano Cortino, the Olympics. I feel like the headline really, like, I think it's just because there was literally curling every single day of the Olympics. But the curling controversy was had to be the biggest story, at least it's the most. Yes. I think so too. And like curling, I think they were holding them hostage because like, it would be like date times here when there should not be live Olympics happening. And they would still be in their, I assume pounding beers and curling all day and all night long. Well, I think the thing is that like the way that curling is set up is that it's like, you basically play every other team that's in the curling. So there's, there was mixed doubles, mixed doubles, there's mixed doubles. And then there was the men's and the women's. And so basically the mix happens first. And every team plays every other team is the round Robin. And then you go into like the tournament function. And then the same thing happened to women and the men's. And so it's just like, it's so much, it's so much curling. But the big controversy
13is that the, the Canadian men's team first, then the women's team, both got accused, technically not of cheating, although people and people call it cheating, but of a rule violation of the very least in which they were touching their rock after they were supposed to let go of their, their stones. Yes. So, so I can try to explain this as best I can in a way that hopefully makes sense. But please ask any questions at you. I was, I was going to say I'm wondering if like just a basic description of curling from the town idiot might be make that be helpful for everyone here. Okay. So curling is basically each, each, each team you get, you get eight stones that you're throwing and you're going back and forth. And you're trying to just get like, I mean, simply, you're trying to get the most amount of your stones closest to the middle of that, the big circle, the, and it's a bull's eye. It's a bull's eye. And so if the closest rock, the closest two rocks are yellow, yellow gets two points. If there's a yellow, then a red yellow gets one point. Like, you just, the amount, the most close to the button, you get those points. It's scored like
17Batchyball for outdoor parking people, park game people. Correct. You play for 10 ends. You know, pretty, I think honestly, it's simpler than people give a credit. Yeah. It's, I think the basic thing though is like, you are, you're on ice. And so like, you see like people, you, you kind of are like sliding on ice and you just kind of like, let go of the, the stone is like the whole, no one's actually throwing it. It's supposed to be like a very like, it's like a light release. And then and you're curling at this is where curling comes out. You're turning your stone to try to get it. Like as you were talking about such like little movements that can like, you know, you can arc your stone in or, you know, get it to hit a specific way to get the shot you want. Yeah. Are you, are you a curler, Grace? I curled all my whole, my whole life throwing up. I did not want to play hockey like all my brothers. So instead I curled. That's what I did. Yeah. I love that for you. I, we curled in gym class. So I, I have about one week of curling experience.
20I mean, it's about the amount of expertise that everybody, that's more than most people who got very passionate about this sport over the last few weeks. Yeah. And I was never, I was never good at it. Like even, it's hard. I couldn't, I couldn't just release this. Like thankfully, I was like, barely small in week. So even if I like put some force behind it, it would still go like kind of where it needed to go. Cause I was not strong enough to just like use the physics properly. But like, yeah, I don't know. If you've ever done it, it's like, it is like you do it. It's like, yeah, you say you're releasing it. But also it's not like, if you don't push it hard enough, like, there's literally like, I feel like the amount of times I've seen where we were playing. And like, there's these two things called the hog lines. And then we're going to talk about the hog line in terms of like, you have to release your stone before you, before your hog line, like the one that's closest to you. But you also have to get the stone past the further hog line. That's actually the main point of the hog line is that that further one. And the amount of times people like, you can't get it over that line because we're just like, you know, you don't throw it because you, and then if you throw it too hard, it's going to
23say I'll pass the end and that's not good either. So it is tricky. Yeah. Yeah, game of moderation and a game that captivated the whole world this February. I mean, yeah. So I mean, I think it was really to, it was one, it was there was this rule of violation. Essentially, although so the claim was from the from was it the Swedes? I believe it was the sweet. I thought it was Denmark. Is it Denmark? Let's let's clarify this. So they accuse Canada of rule violation of essentially, as you're supposed to as it's supposed to work, you let go of your stone on the hand. You can only allow to hold it by the handle. You let go. And then you're not allowed to touch the stone after that. Although there is some leeway that you you can touch the handle. Again, although as long as you're behind the hog line is what people are saying. Correct. As long as you're blowing out, you can touch the handle again.
25There's also sensors on the handles that they've built. They used to be pretty faulty, but they're pretty good now. And it essentially will tell you whether or not you kept holding onto it. Past the hog line, and it will light up. So then the controversy comes when the Canadian Curler, like, let's go of the handle. And then his finger seemingly touches the stone. And it's touching the stone, not the actual handle. And so this is technically, you know, at least the accusation is this is a rule violation. I believe they've come out into like like as of the time in which like the thing happened, they were like actually in the rule that doesn't say that it says you can retouch it. And it doesn't necessarily say that you can't touch it. So we're going to like write it officially in the rules. But like we've all known that you're not supposed to be able to touch the stone. Again, but but the official like scorers have said no rule violation. Although if you do see, I mean, I think he is touched. I mean, I get really defensive because I don't think it really like I don't think it really mattered to what he was trying to do. Like it wasn't like he
28was pushing it. Like it wasn't like it was I think really change anything about the way he shot it. But I guess he did touch the stone. Well, and so like two things, one, the stones are so heavy. Like an index finger, you would have to be the incredible Hulk to make a meaningful difference to the path of the the stone with their index finger. But then the other part that's I think makes it a little bit more salacious is that typically in curling competition, there's very fixed positions for the cameras of where where it's filming from such that generally speaking, this like second touch with the index finger would never be, you know, captured and people might not necessarily notice it. Curling is supposed to be a sort of like self-policed sport. Like you can imagine the amount of people who are mostly playing that are just like playing in their local curling rink. And so there is this like old school mentality of like, you know, if you commit a rule violation, you know, and what would have happened. What should have happened is a canner should
29have been like, Oh, if I touched the rock twice, we're going to move this down. You wouldn't even let it do anything. You would like move it before. We never got down the ice. And the fact that like Canada didn't do it. And then it is, it is Sweden, who did call them as like, Oh, okay. You know, you know, you, you should, you know, I think you touched your rock is like, there's the controversy there. And then like because they weren't like planning on like, this is not how it's like umpire. Like there is an umpire, but you typically like, they're sitting in the stands and you go and you're like, Hey, we, we want to check this thing or whatever. Um, there is typically an umpire who like checks sometimes the stones are really close to the, so two stones like close to the button to see like which one is actually closer. Um, and so then the Olympics was going to be like, okay, we'll have, we'll have like an umpire, I guess, and every, and they're like, we actually don't have the capability to do that for all the games we're going to play. So like, we're probably not going to do that. And we're going to let yourself pull. I think a lot of the teams are also like, yeah, we don't actually need that. Like just because there's this beef going on. It's like curling is such a chill. So chill. Like it's a, you go, you have your like, say Wednesday night is when you have your curling league or whatever. And everyone has a couple brusquies. And
34it's just like, you're hanging out. It's not, it's, it's very weird to me to see it being this like big, serious, like Olympic controversy. And then the other piece of this conversation, I think is like why it sort of blew up and the is not just that there was a revolution, but also it was like Canada's reaction was a little bit like, hey, F you, F you buddy. Like let's talk about your own real violations, which I think, I think probably you and I are probably more realistic about the notion that like Canadians are just like super nice people, which I think we are. And also like, don't mess with us a little, you know, like, there's a little like passive aggressiveness that can come out of a Canadian. I think generally speaking like, Canadians are very polite. Like on a trip, the last trip I made to the States, I like backed out of the way of a woman pushing a stroller and said sorry, and the person with me like laughed. And it's that's the most Canadian thing I've ever seen. And I was like, okay, well, I was just making room for a woman pushing her child down the sidewalk. I didn't realize that was so crazy to do. But I, but I do think you're right. Like globally, our reputation is like,
39oh, hi, where can't of that? And it's like, y'all, do you not see like hockey as like our and like look cross as our big sports? Like those are very violent activities and the people that play those sports are like, often really like a problem. And they unfortunately also represent the demographic. Yeah. So I think that that's also what blue was a little bit of the like Canadian react of like, oh my god, like they're like swearing at each other on an Olympic curling match. Yeah, I mean, and then it turns out like, you know, nothing really happened. The women, if the Canadian women's team gets accused of cheating as well or not cheating again, a rule violation by Switzerland. In their game, nothing really. I think that they do remove the rock maybe in that game because of the way that they were telling it. Anyway, the Canadian men's team goes on to to win gold. The women, I think lost, I think the women, Canadian women were in brought, I think it was great Britain, who won for the the women. But the team who was sort of kicked out this controversy ended up winning gold, which, you know, for kind of fun. As a Canadian,
44it was kind of fun. I listen, the fact that like the Canada should be better at the winter Olympics than we are. So I'll take what we can get. But yeah, there was also, so I had heard that there was more to this controversy with another team like placing cameras to capture the angle of the rule violation that wouldn't necessarily be captured. Okay, yes. So here's what I, I think one thing I haven't really heard people talk about is like, there's this whole thing about like odds and rule violations and not a rule violation. Like in my mind, it doesn't change the directory of the rock. But also, if you're not allowed to touch the stone again, then I guess it is a rule violation. So probably like Canada should, but like why did why do they do it if it's not an advantage? And my feeling is that it's a little bit of like almost like a compass. It's a little bit of like, as you're throwing your stone, if you track your finger down the end of it, you can probably get a sense of whether you, you threw it on the line that you wanted and you're able to sense
44how much it's curling. I don't know this. I don't really talk to a like a more professional curler to be like, is this what was happening? It's the one piece that I feel like is really missing in terms of like, why do they do it like that? My friend thinks it's like mostly just like a tick that they've Canadians, especially like these high-level Canadians have picked up. But so apparently they have been doing it in other tournaments. In which case, yes, they've been doing it because it's like this thing. It's not just that they started doing it in this tournament. Like it's a thing that I think many curlers and at least the Canadians here do. And probably like, what's interesting is like right now the the the briar is happening. So this is like the big men's tournament of of the year. And like I've been meaning to watch it to see if like other Canadian teams like have the same sort of tick that they've been doing and potentially like the Canadians come and like nobody else is doing it. But it's like the Canadians are doing it. But yes, the team Sweden apparently had been like noticing the Canada done that and then had somebody film. So that angle that like most people saw of the thing was not a broadcast angle. It was the angle that like
46a Swedish, you know somebody who works for the Olympic Committee probably in Sweden had like filmed. Yeah. See and that I like that's the type of mess that I can really get behind because like as you as you said, like is it really going to make a key difference to how the stone is moving? Like to me, I think of it more like when people touch the outside of the plane before they get in because they think it will give them good luck. Like I think of it maybe more like that. But again, I've never really curled and you have. So I feel like you would have a better sense of why it might happen. But it's like, oh, we got yelled at and we don't like it. And we're like going to make sure that the world sees what we see. Like that is fun. Yeah, the Swedes. I don't know that they've like really come. I have there's an article from the guy who got like a cute Mark Kennedy. Says that they came up with a plan at the Olympics as far as I'm to catch teams and they act to the hog line. That was planned right from the word go yesterday. From the words that they were
47being said, but the coaches, the way they were running to the officials, it was kind of evident that something was going on and they were trying to catch us in an act. I know we're not the only team that they've done that too. So fun. So messy. Wait, so the Swedish curling team is like Randall from recess, basically. Yes, knowing that like this is a thing like there's some like technicalities that they could probably like find and then they could go and and tell which like, again, I'm like, I'm all in the like, yeah, if it's a rule violation, maybe you probably should remove the stone and also like, does it really matter? I don't know. So you you are making a very key distinction between like it's it wouldn't be cheating. It would be a rule violation. I'm curious what why the distinction? Well, so to me, the difference between cheating feels like you're trying to I mean, I guess you are trying to get an advantage. I think the advantage that they're getting is doing a thing that other teams think that they might not be able to do in essence like hold your finger there to basically like see if you've curled it on on the line you want it and how much it's
49spinning. And so I guess if other teams think like, Oh, I can't do that because I can't touch the stone. You can't I feel like the distinction for me is mostly in terms of like it's it's not like impacting. Once you've thrown the stone, it's not impacting. It's not like you're like moving this like there was a thing that happened in a later game where a guy against team Canada was like went to he wanted to sweep the stone the like Canadian stone and he knocked his own stone out of the way in which case the rock didn't hit it where it should have and therefore like it didn't knock it as like the argument is like well now you've changed the trajectory of yeah you've changed the field of play right which I mean again like she like even in that I don't think that that guy cheated because I don't think he did it intentionally to try to gain like a specific advantage although maybe I'm arguing that by the thing that the guy's doing he is getting an adventure that he thinks other people can't do I like to me I think that
53any any like a team playing Canada could have done the same thing and it wouldn't have been called um because I don't think it's cheating okay that does make sense thank you yeah yeah but some people will call it some people say it's cheating yeah all over the entrance oh Canada's dirty cheaters blah blah blah to which I say clean your own room first yeah um I mean I feel like the other I mean the other one it was uh in Vancouver I mean that would have been much earlier for you I did I did go to a bar at 8 30 in the morning to watch the men's final game um which was fun until it wasn't fun as a Canadian yeah I the bars here were also open at 5 a.m. for that um I was tucked in my bed snug as a rug there's I don't think there's anything that I care about enough to go at 5 a.m. too uh yeah I mean so it was like 8 30 like eight o'clock for me I did not
54drink although when someone ordered a virgin Caesar I was very tempted by a virgin are you a Caesar drinker I well I can't have Caesars some of vegetarian and there's clam in them rights but I also I'm not a tomato juice gal so I don't think I I would be into it either I feel like this is the thing that um this would have been fun to have an American I feel like it's not I mean it's just a bloody is a bloody Mary basically it's well so it's like from what I know and listen Americans please don't come for me I as far as I know I think a bloody Mary is don't come for great actually grease get behind me and don't come for either of us so from what I know a bloody Mary is just tomato juice and dog cut yeah and then a bloody Mary do they have the spices in the bloody Mary I think I think a bloody Mary does but maybe yeah another spice is flavoring you could have other step yeah okay but I don't think it's like the standard right necessarily um but it might be I don't know again I don't like tomato juice so this I've never had one but so a Caesar they
54use what's called climato juice yes this is the part that typically like turns people off uh it's tomato juice with clam juice in it um which I think personally is sinister but I know many people enjoy it um and then it also has Tabasco shop Tabasco sauce Worcestershire sauce um typically a seasoning on the rim and then like some sort of a pickle maybe a pickle green bean maybe just a pickle maybe like a whole meal on top of it I've seen many many types of Caesars and famous morning drink yes uh I do like I do love I do love a Caesar uh I've been drinking less so I a virgin Caesar might be the way to go but and then you know I you know I totally get when people are like oh yeah it's clamge it's like clam broth you know like what the hell but it is delicious I don't know what you tell people I mean I think again I'm vegetarian so I it's prohibited for me personally but like I think people eat seafood like would you not eat like a
58seafood soup that had clam in it because like it's not that different yeah I feel like people got to try one to really you know like I mean don't if you don't want to you know don't don't don't if you know live your life but I think uh yeah to just like but yeah people do seem to be pretty confused on how much uh Canadians we drink Clomato clam broth yeah yeah because I mean who's I do think the person who invented Clomato juice should have gone to prison for it like how did they think of that it's so strange yeah I don't it's it does seem to be that it was an American thing looks like no it was invented in Calgary I well oh maybe you know what you know what you know what I'm just I'm just talking about Clomato the I think I'm talking about Mott's Clomato so okay got it I mean I think isn't it might be an American thing that became pretty popular here um it's weird because the Americans I know don't tend to even know about it I know that's what I'm saying I feel like the fact that it's just two of us Canadians like I feel like some people might be really confused at like when we're talking about how casually we all drink not we all you know
00so yeah it's but it is the drink of a Caesar with the Clomato juice in it was invented in Calgary in in Canada yeah it's a very popular brunch drink I feel like I have it at the cottage a lot like it's like a good cottage drink I'm sitting in my miscoca chair drinking a Caesar you know I it's if you if people want to have a drink in the morning it's it's one of the main morning drinks it's really like a Caesar like a mimosa or like Bailey's and coffee okay so the the women's team the women's hockey team did not go well at all it does seem like potentially they picked a little bit of like an older team and the the women's team the American women's team has been extremely good and the kids women's team just wasn't really able to match up seem like maybe the men had a much better actually I would like you know I think this is a little silly when they're like the better team didn't win or but you know the better team whatever it's like yeah we did lose uh it was it was a big bummer I gotta say I mean I know we won like the four nations thing I didn't
03really watch that last year but like the four nations thing was like not even all of the countries that are good at hockey are here so who cares that's kind of true yeah I was just literally four of the nations yeah um this felt like it was like if I don't know if people can really underestimate here and how much there is an energy of like really like to stick it to you at something right now like it'd be really great to just be like like you're so much bigger and powerful more powerful than us so if we could just like you know do a thing better and then it was so annoying that the Canadians lost it's like when you see media from like the cold war when it's like and the Americans beat the Russians like yes yes yes and that's how Canada feels about wanting to beat America well no America the US we don't have to get into that but the how quickly the like joy of the Americans having one and then like their FBI director being in the locker room and like all of that just going all the good will going away it's like all right at least all right whatever okay I wish we won but you know you can't even enjoy your own moments so it's fine you know yeah but then I'm
03like oh man imagine how it would have been to see their freaking FBI director looking all sad and at least that would have been something because then yeah so the the women had lost and then like it was two days later that the men's gold medal my drive it was Friday and then it was Sunday yeah I think so yeah and so then obviously men lose we get this clip of cash Patel with the freaking keg like it's so crazy because I know the women's team like I guess I got to invite the women to the white is like yeah there is I don't know which player it is but if you're watching that clip where they're like on the phone there's one player who's like before you can tell that Trump is like telling a joke about it's like yeah yeah yeah I'm like the one yeah there's a line that's sort of like a double gold or something like he's like curly very you know and then then everyone else realizes like Trump is making this terrible joke yeah yeah it would have been that I have to say the stories of like the men you know up until all of that happened um the like
04when you like getting like hit in the like losing a tooth and then scoring the winning goal and then then they're bringing Johnny Goodrose cheers I don't know if you know I need the Johnny Goodrose stuff but like the Johnny Goodrose stuff is like it was very very sad and bringing his kids on the ice yeah did you keep but like I think there's actually one on looks best that we should have talked about they provide a lot of context for this gold medal moment uh-huh and that's the tape McCray of it all are you aware of the tape McCray Olympics controversy uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh this does sound familiar but I don't okay do I know no this is perfect because now now the now the tables have turned so obviously tape McCray is a pop singer um known for her songs but sports car um she is from Calgary Alberta she dates hockey players her current boyfriend is the man that scored the gold medal winning goal in the US Canada hockey game okay and at the start of the Olympics she did an ad for the Olympics for team USA even though she is Canadian no um and so that like
12immediately blew up and there was I can't remember which actor it was off the top of my head I'm so sorry but he made a TikTok being like tape McCray that's traitor shit like what what's wrong with you and tape McCray's response which again key information her birthday is literally July first which is Canada day um she posted just like a picture of her as a child like holding an American flag that and with the captain just like you know I'm Canada down um that like that was her whole response to the whole thing and then oh I did see I'm Canada down I did see that no one took it serious because it's like what do you people are calling you a traitor no no I saw the meme of of people posting how they are so it was like like you know like uh people posting pictures of like there's a very famous McDonald's at like yes but I didn't try to be like I'm Canada down and like people posting like stuff that like the joke was I'm Canada down I said I did I that did make mine yes my social media it became a total meme because it's just what an unserious response
16to like people actually kind of hating you right now um and then her boyfriend scored that goal although they might have even broken up since I'm not I I don't keep up with tape McCray's relationships that much yeah I mean obviously I didn't either but um yeah I didn't yeah the the fact that she sort of like didn't add for them hadn't really come across my there's a lot of I think people will be surprised by how much um many Canadians are not fans of Wayne grisky right now because he has been you know friends with we don't claim him yeah and uh and so he he was at the game and there was a lot of like who are you rooting for bro like what are you doing uh which you did have to come out and clarify is like hey I love Canada like okay all right do you do you Wayne yeah very very uh very you know you got to really be showing the Canadian pride stuff right now uh for for the Canadians uh out there um okay yeah it you know uh bummer tevla and it's like the last event you know I do agree with you it does feel like we should be way better at the
16Olympics than then we actually are like the for the winter Olympics like if you look at the metal count I'm like I thought that like the Olympics were our thing and then you just look at like Norway and that one guy one like six gold medals um I do think it's the thing of um like if you look at the certain events there are these all of these countries that are like specifically very good at so Norway is like very good are they good at the like the it's everything with cross country skiing and yeah which uh there's been some study I saw I heard a study I think it was the daily uh that did a study about like how cross country skiing is like the thing that actually is like the physically hardest thing because you're moving every part of your body um which I that was fascinating yeah do you feel like these countries are like supposed to they're like we're just gonna be good at this thing over here and then we'll just win all the medals in there then Canada I think yeah spread out yeah I think a big part of the problem um and not to be like that person who makes things not fun but it's like when you look at all these Scandinavian countries
17that have a lot of like similar winter situations to Canada they also have like profound access for children to get into sports programs and start from a very young age and it gives a lot more people the potential to become Olympic like level athletes where is in Canada like sports are expensive like we have like the the weather for all of these winter sports but if you want to learn how to like cross country ski as a child and you're not learning it at home you probably have to pay a lot of money and even if you are learning at home like all the equipment is extremely expensive okay so speaking with this is a great segue that we've we've landed on Norwegian skiers and then also boyfriends and girlfriends are you familiar with oh yeah oh oh like read this is the best story of the Olympics I think we can't believe it and start with this yeah we briefly talked about this on mess magnets with Levina a couple of weeks ago um just to be like what the hell what a humiliation ritual for this guy he wins a medal and he goes I ruined my life I cheated on my girlfriend and I
20just hope that by humiliating myself she'll see that I want her back so bad I think this is so I think this is what this work on you uh no but it's so funny it's so funny I mean I guess maybe I don't know what it where it doesn't work no right can't whoa I mean to me like I already would feel so much like the the emotions of being cheated on are like you feel very bad and then it's like well but at least that's me and my friends know about this and it's like my personal tragedy and now it's on the global new like the whole not the channel in Canada the whole like world is talking about the fact that this man cheated on me everybody knows like that's so embarrassing for her as well as for him that it's like no that it would bring back shame I mean I I mean I guess it's better than just like I mean but the dude what like it's never like he won he won the medal then he's just like I mean like if he had just said like I I want to start yeah I don't know
25to this person says her name and goes I love you so much I just want you back please give me another chance like I'll never screw it up again that to me feels more like something that would like happening in a rom-com then like this so I think I just think it's so funny this is yeah it's full rom-com it's full sick like it's so that's so funny that he does the post game interview and admits that he cheated on us from it it's so funny I I don't even know what this is the Lindsey and I used to Lindsey Wilson I used to do the what we do in the shadows podcast and we would just recap episodes and then we'd say the funny things like this podcast is just saying the funny lines from the episode but worse and I don't think there's anything funnier than just saying this guy said he cheated it's good when it's the worst week of his life after winning a medal it's so funny yeah it's and it if it only hurt a man I would find it so much funnier than the fact it's emotions there's also the the French by athlete did you hear about this she like uh she
29had used her teammates credit card and got convicted of fraud but then she won she won three golds I think it's like yeah can't believe she got left back on the team but I guess if you're that good that's if you're that good you know I mean they said we're still not going to pay you and you can't steal anymore but we need you to perform and move yourself yeah she's got a three-month prison sentence I don't understand what goes through people's heads to be like oh I'm gonna steal someone's credit card in use like you're gonna get caught if you like if you do credit card fraud you're gonna get caught yeah I don't yeah I don't yeah I don't I don't yeah I you're definitely gonna get caught especially like someone you know so true I mean maybe that's like the thing that you think it won't get the reason won't kick is like I don't know I don't I don't it's so crazy and it's like you all just got brand new full wardrobe from whichever company made your Olympic gear yeah I don't
30know I had a friend once who stole another friend's like birthday gift cards oh that's that's brutal and that was like I mean I can't remember if we got them back or not but we did write a note and put it on her parents door of like your daughter did this oh yeah we we were all adults at the time we were like at least 19 technically adults I do love a gift card so if someone's stolen spend my gift card yeah okay the other one of this story is I don't think you're familiar with this at all but are you familiar Nazgul the dog is this ring any bells this doesn't ring any bells no this rings no bells please tell me everything Nazgul the dog is a is a is a wolf dog so I kind of had to do a little but I feel like I have a wolf dog but this is a real wolf dog I have a fake wolf dog this is a real wolf dog which is it's like the dire wolf they're kind of like I think
32it's I do think it's like part wolf I think it's more than just like a like a like a dog that looks like a wall I think it's fully a wolf half dog I think and it there's the finish of a I believe a women's cross country a team sprint and it's two Rangers going and then suddenly there was a dog behind them that looks like a wolf like Cody I'm I'm gonna try to pull up a picture as we're chatting um totally fine the dog was lovely it escaped a local Airbnb um the family went to go out and watch an event and the dog got out and just ran the race and I mean I guess technically came and I mean I probably didn't start it officially but yeah Nazgul the dog um winter a little bit it was amazing it was this dog is so cute it's so cute it's and it's like I mean the the image of the dog like running after that is like incredible um yeah fantastic story that was a very fun morning it's like Nazgul the dog you know anytime an animal gets involved in a sporting
33event like when there's like a cat at the Super Bowl or like similar like that not takes me every time um this story also reminded me there was one of the cross country races where like three of the Norwegian athletes were so far ahead of everyone else that they all like stopped and then like did their own mini race within the race at the end but that's also hilarious so great yeah so great um yeah Nazgul Nazgul big fan big fan in Nazgul the dog but like this dog does look like a wolf I feel like if I'm singing and I see what look here's to be a wolf chasing after me it's like do you think like they kind of set a world record if Nazgul I've been there though true at all time yeah that's like some performance and answering stuff is like having a wolf dog run behind you yeah I mean I think that was the worry that like it was like chasing behind the roads like is this a wild wolf that's got on the then it was so friendly it was so nice calling on the Olympic committee to ban having dogs chase athletes perfect strategy no notes um the the other thing I feel like when a
36little viral at the Olympic was like the the is it the the squirrel mascot the like plushies that every gold medalist would get and like these sad like especially the the hockey teams who have just lost have handed these little plushies um I feel like I love the Olympic mascots like not I don't even know I don't really care about these ones specifically I just mean in general I think the idea that there are mascot Olympic mascots is great yeah I I agree and especially like a stuffed animal it'll make you feel better if you win I'll make you feel better if you lost I see no problem apparently a lot of the medals were breaking as well that was another big country they were and the problem I guess is that like you have to make them in such a way people don't want holes in their in the middle so you have to make them in a way where like the necklace can attach but doesn't put a hole in like you can't like yes they're not right that is like there's a thing I never would have actually thought about uh is like well I guess the design of the medals is also different every time right like I feel like there's been previous Olympics where
40the medal itself had like a donut hole so yes it's true these ones apparently the symbolism behind these is it kind of looks like it's like two halves which is supposed to symbolize you as the athlete plus all the people in your life who have helped you get to the spot you are which I actually think is quite oh that's very sweet yeah it's quite nice right we had um have you ever held an Olympic medal in your hand I don't know I don't I've met I think I know somebody who won a medal but I don't think I ever got to to hold it we at my high school it there was a I can't remember I could find her name easily just by liking a Canadian gold medal speed skating you know my I was thinking of he's a Pan American games winner but he's not the Olympic medalist wow I know I know I know this woman anyways she won in speed skating in like the early 2000s and she came to my high school and Katrina Limey don't de-own she came to my high school and so she won in the 1998
45in 2002 Winter Olympics and so she came to our school and it was at a time when a bunch of the boys in the grade 12 class had decided that they were all gonna wear um tank tops and flip flops on Wednesdays um or wolf shirts on Wednesdays and they were told after this happened in front of the Olympian that that was no longer permitted at the school oh the dress code got imposed you can't do that no wolf shirt ones it wolf shirt wins it that feels like it's okay I mean I think the wolf it was um it was more they had a name for the tank top Wednesdays that was not appropriate that I think was what ultimately got the sounds about right the kite which I think everyone can read between the lines of what that was um yeah I feel like those are all my Olympics I mean the only other thing and it's not that fun is like would there was Lindsey Vaughn um that's the only other thing I feel like everything else is like you know I just have one one Olympics question that we haven't touch on today and that is the men's figure skating everyone fell down and did you ever find out why
54they fell down okay so I did forget about this is not the one I wanted is uh ili mallet which I was saying to my I was saying to a friend I went for we went for uh it was like roundly the start of the Olympics it's like they're really like like really famous figure skaters anymore and then I was thinking I was like oh maybe just because like canada hasn't won in a long time and so I don't think they're a famous figure skater because we haven't had like a a a a medalist with like a gold medal winner in recent years because then as I was watching the Olympics like ili mallet is like apparently like this like figure skating superstar who like I am the quad god who I am kind of super intrigued by um it does seem generally like he just was very nervous um he made a comment when he lost and he had fallen that he said he should have been picked to go represent America at the last Olympics when he was he was very young like is he 20 is he is he younger than 20 he's 21 now yeah so he would have been really young last time and so he did like place high enough that he probably should have gone but it's not like it's always guaranteed that just like the highest
56place based on your your like history so he didn't get picked last time and then he was like I probably shouldn't have picked so I wasn't so nervous this time I think it's like I don't know fair and also I don't know uh I think it's funny but I also think the fact that they made the minimum age for figures skating a little higher is good um because like it would just be like the littlest girl you've ever seen in your life and it's like that can't be they shouldn't be jumping and spinning that much like it can't be good probably not yeah um the one that doesn't that weird to me is like why could the backflip was basically like banned for like the when he like flips back when the end person long and now it's it's not even worth points he just does it for fun you don't get any points it's not worth points because no one else can do it but because they can't do because they can't physically do it or they're not allowed to do it I think the physics I think a lot of them physically can't do it but it also it it brings up the important point of um the
57the backflip on to the single leg right like he did that in this Olympics and it was like a whole big thing um and they acted like he's the first person to ever do this but he's not the first person to ever do this um because it was in the late 90s I believe um where a a black woman skater siria um banali forgive me if I'm saying that wrong um she they were like you're not allowed to do it because nobody else is like physically capable of doing it she did it anyway and they like took away points from her from her and let me tell you she did this in 1994 and hers was better than quad gods in the year 2026 and it's so crazy yeah yeah that's about right that yeah yeah yeah that's something to like it mens figure skating like it obviously like it takes an immense amount of talent for anyone to get to this level with figure skating like it is that is
01not easy the men are doing all these quads like all these spins and jumps but I do find they I feel like the men go for so many uh like different moves that they don't land as smoothly like I when you watch like especially the really really great women figure skaters like Alessolue it's like our body just flows like there's no moment of like needing to steady herself first I feel like the men always need to study themselves a little bit yeah so true I mean Alessolue I think kind of like had a ton of sort of six like broke out I think is like a you know quite an amazing uh represent I thought she was like so hot there was one where a question where somebody was like oh do you feel like the silver's that you want or like let like are you let down and he's like no I'm like the second best figure skater in the world like I'm okay bro like maybe re-requestion like she is awesome I think she's like uh she's pretty rad um yeah yeah ilia you know
04he's he's 20 while he'll figure I think he'll be okay you know I think he'll figure it out I think he'll probably be back in the French Alps next time I think so yeah it's a way we didn't figure out why they fell down I why they all okay they're oh are we talking figures because there was also the um the speed skating controversy about where they all fell down yeah I think it was I think that there was something wrong with the ice potentially for both of those events but I don't think I ever saw like the no one explained to me why they all fell and like two days in a row and those same scores um yeah I mean it it does seem like potentially the uh the the ice was not uh and I mean the thing with speed skating is that like if someone falls it like can super everyone falls everyone um but uh which there's always that clip that goes viral of the Australian but like that guy is a guy who like kept like he basically should there was a bunch of races he was like the favorite to win for years and he kept losing because he would get like knocked out by another skater and so it's very like actually the like great irony of that moment is that like
08how he eventually won um when he maybe wouldn't shouldn't have won or like wasn't you know favorite to win was the time or everybody else fall down that's funny I didn't know that context yeah um no I mean I it does see yeah I don't know why everybody fell in the in the figure skating but it seems like the skis I mean the speed skating one does seem to be like there were some issues with the with the ice um so you know um but yeah wow was it who was the guy who won in uh in in in the guy who who just like I think it's very interesting oh yeah it's uh michael shot her up who's uh is he from Kazakhstan yeah he's a Kazakhstan who just like didn't like he did well and he probably did the best forms of life and he was like yeah but all the good ones are gonna go next and then just kept seeing them fall and then he won gold is pretty awesome as well I think that's that's not best of felt so like he's like oh well I did great but I cannot win and then everyone else fell down he's like hi I was meant to win do you do like so there was a not convert but I feel like in the um in the team event uh ilyam alan and went last and he didn't
11land some of his jumps and yet because he was trying harder jumps he scored higher than the Japanese team and they ended up winning winning gold that to me feels well I feel like if you don't land on your jet but I mean I guess it's the point of scoring is that you try to harder one I mean I think yeah you should try a harder one but I think that there should be a big a big enough penalty for not landing it to kind of equalize for the people that make the calculated choice to try like a less difficult jump that they can land cleanly and also clearly I'm not over it was at the 2004 uh what's the figure the Canadian figure skating controversy uh clearly not over that one um do you remember what the Russian is it the Russian judge uh yes we're like the Russian judge had uh yeah 2002 I think so Salt Lake City yeah Jamie Sallay and David Peltay names I haven't thought about in 20 years it's like yeah we and they still sit in our hearts they they had to share their gold with Russia though that was I feel like that was like the
13real travesty you should not have to share gold but it's because the Russians cheated and then they didn't want to take away the Russian gold medal because that was more controversial than they just gave Sallay and Peltay a gold as well grow up Olympic committee that's what I have to say to that because like also like made the um Ukrainian athlete like take off his helmet that had the pictures of people who've died and I'm like okay so you're gonna say that you're not allowing Russia in the Olympics because of this war but then you're gonna censor this Ukrainian athlete is crazy and also all of the Russians are still just competing for other countries across the world like it's like well did you ban them or did you not ban them yeah um there was I mean there is more story that did you just did you watch the minion figure skating routine did you see that that one that was a joy yeah because it used to be that you couldn't you couldn't perform to anything that didn't have a layer and also I guess like the copyright step is what they've like really
15used up on that so yeah this is a Spanish figure skater when I had seen a story right before the Olympics that was like oh this like a minion fan is like devastated because they're not allowed to perform the music and then he was allowed to perform to the music and it was such a joy and then the other story that I saw was there was the Slovakian man who got he was on the run for 14 16 years I think and got arrested because he went to the Italy hockey game I believe they got arrested did you have with it he did a bunch of you hear about this okay there was a man who he's Slovakian he did a bunch of thefts in Italy in 2010 and he had had a warrant out for his rest and he got caught because he went to go watch Italy play Slovakia at the Olympics and they caught him I think that's so funny I think that's also great I mean I would watch the movie I would watch the movie Kirsten I gotta tell you and he a little scared
17about the serving one said I mean true um yeah so I mean yeah I don't know uh he's just gonna serve about a year in prison though okay well he was free for a lot longer than that so good for him it's true I think those are all the only thing on his crime yeah probably um probably credit card theft too those are all the stories that I have those are the Olympic stories I well and I think I think we've addressed anything I had questions about so that's it that's the 2026 no Olympics we did what a fun crossover episode yeah I love this I think this is a great idea to kind of just bring just a sense of something a little bit different to both of our audiences and then you know people can check out like if you're a messenger you could check out taste makers to get some more thoughts on the more prestige and like high quality TV out there and then you know if people enjoyed this then come check out mess man this we talk about pop culture celebrity gossip
20trending topics like a lot of celebs stuff uh which you know inevitably does feed into some of these shows so true so true are you watching it what are you watching these days what are you watching on TV um I'm watching the pit yeah love it so good obviously um I just crushed Bridgerton season 4 which I'm generally kind of like a book purist for like adaptations but they made some key changes and this adaptation that I think were actually like really good choices that made a more entertaining product healing I didn't talk about season 4 specifically but there was a little of like um yeah it feels like maybe they're figuring it out some stuff but then also they they put themselves in a corner based on what they chose to do with season 3 that they are now trying to like get themselves out of the corner which is a little bit irritating to me personally but and whatever um and then other than that like I don't think I'm watching anything else scripted
21I'm just watching you know traders USA just finished survivor 50 just started uh house of villains I am not caught up yet but working on it I I watch a lot of reality and then obviously you forias coming in March I'll watch that this coming soon yeah yeah should be good um well thanks for come on uh and thanks for having me on on the mess back at speed yeah I think that this is going to be really fun I hope that the the messengers can get on board all right well thanks everybody so much for listening we'll see you all next time bye bye two good and co-coffee creamers are made with farm fresh cream real milk and contain three grams of sugar per serving that's 40 percent less than the five grams per serving in leading traditional coffee creamers for a rich delicious experience whether you enjoy your coffee hot cold bold or frothy two good coffee creamers make every sip a good one two good coffee creamers real goodness in every sip find them at your local croaker in the creamer aisle close your eyes exhale
