About this episode
Progress is easy to misjudge when you measure it from a distance.
You look at the final result.
The number.
The deadline.
The outcome.
And you decide whether you're succeeding or failing.
But meaningful progress often happens somewhere much less visible.
In the daily work.
In the small decisions.
In the repetitions nobody sees.
Measure Progress Where the Work Lives explores why the best way to understand improvement is to measure it at the level where the actual work happens.
If you're trying to become healthier, don't only measure the number on the scale.
Look at the habits that produce it.
If you're learning something, don't only measure the final grade.
Look at how consistently you're practicing.
If you're building a business, don't only look at revenue.
Look at the activities that create the revenue.
If you're improving a relationship, don't only ask whether everything feels perfect.
Look at how you communicate when something goes wrong.
The outcome is important.
But outcomes are often delayed.
The work is where change becomes visible first.
Ask:
What am I actually trying to improve?
What behavior produces that improvement?
Can I measure that behavior directly?
What small change would tell me I'm moving in the right direction?
This changes the way you evaluate yourself.
Instead of waiting months for proof that you're improving, you can see evidence in the process.
You showed up.
You practiced.
You made the difficult conversation easier.
You responded differently than you used to.
You kept going when motivation disappeared.
Those things count.
Progress isn't always a dramatic transformation.
Sometimes it's simply becoming a little more capable at the thing you're actually working on.
Don't measure the tree every morning to see whether it has grown.
Pay attention to what you're doing to help it grow.
Measure progress where the work lives.
Because that's where progress starts.
