On April 30, Arizona Diamondbacks catcher James McCann took the mound again for the final inning in a blowout loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. This marched the second time in three games he's done in, and the fourth this season they've had to use a position player to pitch because games got out of hand. Starting pitcher Michael Soroka struggled hard, giving up eight runs in just three innings against the Brewers lineup that doesn't strike out much. He allowed three runs right in the first, and things only got worse from there. Manager Tori LaVulo hates sending position players to pitch, calling in one of his least favorite parts of baseball. But he prays McCann for stepping up without complaint, even without warming up and being a total team player. The bigger issue is the Diamondback starters not going deep enough into games, which wears out the bullpen. They've won some close ones that way, but LaVulo wants better outings from the front of the rotation to compete the right way. With the solid 16 wins and 14 losses so far in 2026, Arizona knows fixing the pitching

depth will keep them rolling strong through the season. From around the league, powered by AI, this is MLB News Today. I'm Corey with the story.
