MBE Referee: Tara Jones Makes History in Rugby League

0:00On March 27, Tara Jones had an incredible week in Rugby League. The 29-year-old received an MBE from Prince William at Windsor Castle for her services to the sport. She's also set to make history as the first woman to referee a men's super league match. Jones started refereeing at age 12 after a successful playing career with St. Helens in England. She won a women's super league title, two league leader shields, and four challenge cups before retiring this year. She's been handling men's games for about a year now. Players treat her just like any other referee, though they sometimes struggle with what to call her since they're used to saying, sir. Jones finds it amusing and appreciates their respect. She got into officiating because she wanted to stay involved at the top level after girls' opportunities were limited back then. On Saturday, March 28, she'll take charge of the Wigan Warriors against Hudderspeel Giants. Jones sees herself as a trailblazer, hoping to inspire more young girls to pick up the whistle.
