Manotick Fire Displaces, Kills Cat; Investigation Underway

It happened in a two-story building on the 5,600 block of Manantig Main Street, with the business on the ground floor and an an apartment upstairs. Multiple 911 calls reported heavy smoke and flames, and firefighters spotted a big plume while heading there. Crews declared it a working fire right away and sent extra help. They found flames shooting through the roof and quickly set up hose lines inside, while using an aerial ladder from above to fight it. Even with freezing rain making things tough, firefighters did two full searches of the smokey building and confirmed no one was trapped inside. They hit a snag with a large hole in the second floor, pulling back briefly for safety, amid heavy water flow, then went back in after about 20 minutes. The old building needed a lot of extra work, by opening walls and ceilings to kill hidden fires. And they got it under control by 1110 AM and victim services stepped in to help the two
