Manchester Turns Housing Office into Emergency Shelter

The spot on Alexandra Road used to be the Alexandra Park office, and now they want to fit it out for up to 20 single folks facing the streets, with spots for disabled residents too. Demand for good temporary spots is way higher than supply in the city, so this repurposing push makes sense. It's right by a housing estate and the park, keeping people close to their networks instead of shipping them far off. Homelessness hits hard here, with 9,589 people affected, including 4,678 kids, that means one in every 61 folks is in this tough spot, per recent shelter data. Plans call for short stays, averaging 6 months or less, with round the clock staff, security, CCTV, and daytime support workers from 8 a.m. to, APM even weekends, though minimize noise for neighbors too. This is part of a bigger city effort to flip unused buildings into real help, getting people stable and into permanent homes faster, pending approval.
