Manchester Trial: DNA Evidence vs. Mistaken ID

0:00On April 10th, Paul Quinn, 51 years old from Exeter, is standing trial at Manchester Crown Court for an alleged rape back on July 19th, 2003 near the M61 in Little Holton. He faces two counts of rape and decent assault Grievous bodily harm and attempted choking. Prosecutors say his DNA turned up on the victim's best, but Quinn denies everything outright. Earlier this week, defense barrister Lisa Wilding wrapped up her closing speech, telling the jury there in a unique spot as to ignore evidence that once nailed another guy, Andrew Malkinson, for the same crime. She hammered home that Malkinson matched the description, got picked out by witnesses, and even had cops eyeing him right after. Malkinson served 17 brutal years inside, for miscareds of justice, freed only after proving his innocence through mistaken IDs, even though the victim was 100% sure at first. Two others fingered him too, and it wrecked his life big time. Wilding pointed out the e-fit from the victim's description doesn't look like Quinn at all.

1:03No scratches on him, despite her saying she fought back. And that DNA could be from casual contact, nothing sexual. She warned against piling up coincidences into guilt. The judge started summing up Friday and picks back up Monday, so the jury's got tough calls ahead on what evidence really sticks.
