Man Returns Medieval Tiles, Unearths New Discoveries

0:00On May 1st, a 68-year-old man just returned three medieval clay tiles he pocketed from Windlock Priory in Shropshire nearly 60 years ago. Back in the late 1960s, nine-year-old Simon White grabbed them as souvenirs during a family trip, stashing the late 13th to early, 14th-century fragments in an old Toppeton. He rediscovered them this year, while moving house and used family diaries to confirm they came from the Priory. White reached out to English heritage. The site's caretakers, emitting his dad even stood watch while he took them. Folks at English heritage have no hard feelings, calling it a sweet story from a kid's impulse. Assistant curator, Maddie Cambridge, noted these decorative tiles match Windlock perfectly, since similar ones aren't found intact at nearby sites. Experts are buzzing over a new dragon motif on one piece. Unknown before at the Priory, plus what looks like a lion face on another. The tiles won't go back on the floor, but head to storage for deeper study.
