On March 8, a 33-year-old man named Bama Deli, Fawa Hinmi, has been convicted of modern slavery and manslaughter after subjecting AC. 55-year-old man, Demetrius Savdaris, two weeks of brutal abuse. Fawa Hinmi forced Demetrius to run drugs and sleep in a filthy garage with dogs at his home in Wickford Essex on January 26, 2024. Fawa Hinmi beat Demetrius severely and drove him to a flat in Hackney, leaving him locked inside while, barely alive. When he returned, three days later on January 29, Demetrius was dead from his injuries, including a fractured skull. The case exposed the deep suffering of Demetrius, a frail and vulnerable person who lived in constant fear. His family has endured immense pain, but the conviction offers some measure of justice, thanks in part to witnesses who came forward with key, evidence. Meanwhile, after discovering the body, Fawa Hinmi tried to flee to Nigeria, but was caught driving on the M11 highway the next day.
Forensic tests found Demetrius' blood in the rental car, sealing the evidence against him. Detectives described Fawa Hinmi's actions as cowardly exploitation, ensuring he now faces years behind bars for his crimes.
