Man Charged in 2006 Murder of British Spy
About this episode
Antoin Duffy, a man in his forties, faces charges for the 2006 murder of British spy Denis Donaldson. Extradited from Scotland, he appeared in Dublins Special Criminal Court, accused of killing Donaldson at a remote cottage in County Donegal and possessing a shotgun. Additionally, Duffy is charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses from a 2007 incident in County Donegal. Donaldson, who had a complex background as a former admin for Sinn Feins Stormont team and a British agent, was gunned down months after his exposure. The Real IRA claimed responsibility for the hit in 2009, but Duffy is now the prime suspect after nearly two decades.

Europe news today, powered by AI bringing you what matters across Europe. I'm Cory with the story. A man in his 40s named Antoine Duffy faces charges for the 2006 murder of British spy Dennis Damelson. Extra-dited from Skylin, he showed up Monday in Dublin's Special Criminal Court. Prosecutors say Duffy killed the 55-year-old at a remote cottage in County Donogall between April 3rd and 4th that year, plus possessing A, shotgun, and ammo to endanger life. On top of that, Duffy got hit with attempted murder of another guy in County Donogall back in November 2007, along with more weapons. Charges from the same spot. Dennis Donaldson had a wild background. He ran admin for Sinn Fein's Storm on Team, but got exposed as a paid agent for British Special Branch in MI5. Since the 1980s, months after that reveal he got gunned down. The real IRA took credit for the hit in 2009, but now after nearly two decades, Duffy's in the hot seat.
Detectives nabbed him at an airfield near Dublin around 122 p.m. Monday, then formally charged him downtown. Judges remanded Duffy in custody till he pops back in court April 13th, and they hooked him up with legal aid. This old case just cracked wide open, keeping everyone watching close.
