The group swam to shore and got quick help from staff at the Lady Elliott Island Eco Resort, who stabilized him before a life flight helicopter took. Him to Bunda Burk Hospital in stable condition. Island custodian Peter Gash noted this was the first shark bite he'd seen in his 20 years on the job. As a precaution, western snorkeling areas are now closed, with staff and shark experts keeping watch, and guests warned to avoid swimming at dawn.
