Lodge Mill Fire: Community Rallies to Rebuild

0:00On March 31st, a massive fire ripped through Lodge Mill in Middleton just before 6 a.m. on March 29th, gutting the town's oldest mill from. Around 1850, firefighters battled the blaze that sent flames shooting through the roof with loud bangs echoing nearby. The site had a rough history, including another big fire in 2021, that wrecked the back section. Owners Martin Cove and Paula Hickey poured years and every penny into reviving the front part, turning it into an events venue, ice cream spot with, local flavors, and home for businesses like a dance studio and tea room. Folks are heartbroken over the loss, especially since the building was uninsurable from its age and past damage. Martin lost an online fundraiser, pleading for community cash to save what's left and rebuild the community hub. No one got hurt, but dreams took a hit. Demolition kicked off by March 31st, with diggers tearing down the top two floors to first floor level while the engine house events space.

1:01Might've dodged the worst. Rochdale Burrow Council is teaming up with owners to secure the site and assess fully. Owners bow not to quit, urging everyone to chip in and preserve the slice of heritage. Lodge Mill's story ain't over yet.
