About this episode
Reflecting and Intentionally Transforming
In Plato's original myth, the primary female figure of Atlantis is Cleito, a mortal woman who became the island's first queen and the consort of Poseidon, the god of the sea. Together, they had ten sons who ruled the ten provinces of Atlantis.
Depending on which version of the mythology or modern adaptation you are looking at, the "goddess of Atlantis" often refers to one of the following:
- Cleito: The mother of the Atlantean kings. While a mortal, she was highly revered. Poseidon transformed the hill where she lived into an impenetrable island fortress.
- Amphitrite: The sea goddess and wife of Poseidon. In expanded mythologies, she rules the deep seas surrounding the sunken continent.
- Gaia: The primordial earth goddess. In some expanded traditions, she and Oranos (Uranus) are the original creators of the Atlantean gods
