Lie Algebra - the intersection of the ABSTARCT and the REAL

The entire edifice of the Standard Model of particle physics—its catalogue of matter particles and the forces that govern their interactions—is constructed upon a single, powerful principle: local gauge invariance. The theory is defined by the requirement that the laws of physics remain unchanged under local symmetry transformations described by the gauge group $SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1)

  • SU(3) dictates the theory of the strong force, Quantum Chromodynamics, with its eight color-charged gluons and the phenomena of confinement and asymptotic freedom.

  • SU(2) x U(1) dictates the unified electroweak theory, which describes both the weak and electromagnetic forces.

This elegant symmetry, however, is hidden in our low-energy world. The Higgs mechanism and spontaneous symmetry breaking "break" the electroweak symmetry down to the U(1) of electromagnetism, leaving the photon massless while endowing the W and Z bosons, as well as all fundamental quarks and leptons, with mass. This framework, while known to be incomplete (it omits gravity and leaves many questions unanswered), has been tested and verified with extraordinary precision, representing one of the greatest intellectual achievements in the history of science.
