About this episode
A good teacher can show you what is possible.
But sometimes we make the mistake of turning a teacher's opinion into a limit.
Someone tells you that you're not ready.
You're not talented enough.
You shouldn't try that yet.
That's not for someone like you.
And instead of treating that opinion as information, you start treating it as a verdict.
Let the Teacher Be a Guide Not a Ceiling explores how to learn from people with more experience without allowing their limitations, assumptions, or expectations to become your own.
Teachers can give you knowledge.
They can point out mistakes.
They can save you years of trial and error.
They can show you techniques you would have struggled to discover alone.
Their guidance matters.
But guidance is not destiny.
A teacher sees you at a particular point in your development.
They may recognize weaknesses that you haven't noticed.
They may also fail to see abilities that haven't developed yet.
Sometimes a teacher's "not yet" is useful.
It tells you what needs more practice.
But "not yet" doesn't have to mean "never."
Learn the lesson.
Take the correction.
Practice the skill.
Then keep exploring.
You don't need to reject the person who taught you in order to outgrow what they taught you.
In fact, one of the greatest signs that learning worked is that you eventually become capable of doing something your teacher didn't have to show you step by step.
The goal of education isn't to create permanent copies of the people who taught us.
It's to give us enough understanding to continue learning on our own.
Respect the guide.
Question the ceiling.
Let experience inform you without letting someone else's expectations define the boundaries of your future.
A teacher can show you the road.
They don't get to decide how far you travel.
Let the teacher be a guide.
Not a ceiling.
