About this episode
Not every silence needs to be filled.
Sometimes we say more because we're uncomfortable with the space that comes after our words.
We explain.
We justify.
We repeat ourselves.
We keep talking because we want to make sure the other person understands, agrees, or responds the way we hoped.
But sometimes you've already said enough.
Let The Room Be Quiet After You Speak explores the quiet confidence of knowing when your words are complete.
You don't always need to defend your decision.
You don't need to explain every boundary.
You don't need to convince everyone that your feelings are valid.
And you don't need to immediately fill the silence after saying something difficult.
Let people think.
Let them respond.
Let the words exist without adding another paragraph to them.
Silence can feel uncomfortable because it removes your ability to control what happens next.
But that's part of the lesson.
You can communicate clearly without controlling the reaction.
You can say what needs to be said and allow another person to decide what they think about it.
Sometimes the strongest ending to a difficult conversation is no ending at all.
Just silence.
Not because you have nothing else to say.
Because you've said what needed to be said.
The next time you feel the urge to keep explaining, pause.
Ask yourself:
"Am I adding something useful, or am I simply trying to make the silence less uncomfortable?"
If you've said enough, let the room be quiet.
