Let's Talk Sports - September 10, 2026

0:00Here we go. The big question, was that a typical week one game, W-E-E-K, or was it a week one game, W-E-A-K? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, that is not how we're starting the show. Chris, start the show correctly. The same thing on the West. Yeah! All right. Oh, wow, he cut it short. That's a better move there by Chris. I mean, it's week one. Maybe we'll play the song further into its full length if they get there some. Oh, it was more than week one. It was opening night. It was prime time. It did come. It was the Patriots. With a lot of different emotions here. Patriots. Let's just let you have the floor. Go ahead. What do you want to say about this game? No, you can start this thing. You go ahead. I'll just chime in whenever you're the host of the show. I don't want to take control. You just keep it going. I'll chime in. Wait, so you're not a host of the show? I mean, I'm a co-host, but you usually lead it in the first show. OK. He drives the box.

1:00All right. Let's just do the formula. The Kenoa Billy, Chris, Avery, Handoff, all right, Billy. Seahawks, pull it out against the Patriots. Sam Darnold in an almost Aaron Rogers, Achilles-esque kind of way leaves the game on the fifth play of the game with an apparent hip injury. There's some reports coming out that they're saying that he may have dodged like a really serious version of that injury, but that he is likely to miss some time. So you have that piece. You have Drake May, who throws three interceptions on three consecutive possessions down the stretch, including when they're driving to possibly kick a game time field goal throws an interception in the end zone. I can just, I can't wait to listen to Bill Simmons' podcast and how he tries to explain this one away, because he was saying Drake May is like a top four quarterback in the league already. This isn't going to help that argument. But you have the Seattle Seahawks. Obviously, with Drew Lock taking over at the QB spot, the defense still looks dominant. The offense had some issues, but J.S. and Jackson, Smith and Jigba was still unbelievable.

2:02It's like you can just have like a jugs machine back there behind the offensive line, just like automatically throwing footballs and he'd still go for like a hundred and a touchdown. He's unbelievable. So here we go, Billy. I am pushing the chips in to your side. Let's hear it. Drake May, huh? Fourth best quarterback. That's your fourth best quarterback in the NFL. I've been saying at time and time again on the show, look, they played nobody last year. They got to the Super Bowl. They played a whole bunch of junk teams. And then the big games, Drake May did absolutely nothing. He did nothing against Denver. He did nothing against Seattle. He's got all this hype coming in this year. That was awful what he did out there. Three straight interceptions to close the game. You're in field goal range. Why are you even trying to sneak a throw in there to the corner of the end zone by the front of the end zone? I don't know what that throw was. He had some awful throws in that game. I mean, I've never seen it with Drake May. I'm shocked at the way everyone loves this guy. And I gotta be honest, I know it was a rough game for him.

3:03I loved every second of it. I loved it. I loved it. And I know people out there again, they're going to compare to the Super Bowl and say, hey, low scoring game, not a lot of offense, not that fun to watch. There's something fun to watch about a dominant defense. And that defense was by the way, okay, imagine, imagine, imagine, imagine that wasn't Seattle. Imagine you're watching that game and Seattle wasn't. No one knew England was pretty fun to watch. I mean, they have a lot of fun to watch. So you would have enjoyed it out there. You would have enjoyed it as well if it wasn't. Not to. No one won. Yeah, nobody like you. Like watching, I like watching the Texans. That's where I picked the Texans to make the Super Bowl that you guys. I like the defense. I like guys going out there and crushing people. And you know, I like them stop in the run. I like them hitting, tackling, physicality. Like I love all that stuff. I love interceptions. Do you love drop passes? Oh boy, what a game that was for drop passes. Yeah, Romeo dobs. Nice splash, buddy. But I got to admit, singing drag may perform like that. Oh, it warms my heart. It was so great. It was such a great evening. Oh my God. Who has? How did Gary feel about the game? 4:03Well, I'll tell you to say later, I, and I'll get to that in a few minutes, but what I'm going to leave you. Is it about the winners? No, no, it's about, it's about, by the way, a Cal Raleigh 180. He went down one point when he was over three. How does that happen? Yeah, he was only going down a point. I thought that Drew Locke is not going to be the answer for them. I glad that Sam Donald's not hurt more. It was interesting. I saw a headline and I had two different meanings, depending on what team Sam Donald was on at the time, said great news about Sam Donald. And I said that that's the jest that he was on. The great news would be that he's out for the year. But for Seattle, the great news is that he's not out for the year. There was also a meme that was out on social media when they announced they unveiled the Super Bowl banner. That instead of saying Seattle Super Bowl champs, it was a picture of Mike Vrayble and Diana receiving hugging. And it looked real, of course, it was only AI. I thought it was an entertaining game. I was a little surprised that it was as low scoring as it was. I agree with you about Drake May. And I went over early on my show New England's schedule this year and last year, just as you kind of alluded to.

5:04And one of the reasons they were able to get as far as they were, they had an easy last-place schedule. This year's schedule is way tougher. I don't have them. I don't think too many people around the NFL are picking New England to go to the Super Bowl this year. I have Buffalo and I can't make up my mind on who else in the AFC, but it's not New England. But some of the same reason you said. Yeah, and they got a really good defense. I mean, New England's pretty good. They had AJ Brown went down unfortunately. So they could be good, but you know, you need a quarterback there. And I just don't see it. And that was atrocious in the fourth quarter last night. That was a big roast. I mean, there's absolutely no two ways around it. One of the more egregious drops by a veteran receiver, too. And that was a huge play. And I think that pick on that drive came just a couple of plays after that. So Romeo Dobbs in the flats just wide open for a first down. I mean, he's making that catch probably 98 out of 100 times, but you can't make those kinds of mistakes, not against that kind of defense. So, all right. So a couple of questions here. As far as being a Seattle fan and seeing what transpired last night,

6:09where do you stand on kind of your feeling about this team in its title defense season? Sam Darrell needs to be helping. That's the number one thing. So I'm going to kind of enjoy this for a day. And then the realization is going to come in at the Sam Darrell. We'll see what it is. They say it's no fracture. So that's a good thing, but a hip is scary. They do. I mean, I'm all right this morning, but no result. Yeah. I think Adam Sheff posted that they haven't necessarily come to a determination based on the results of the testing that they've done, but that there are at least he cited one source. And ESPN and its credibility took a little bit of a hit with the whole Steve Balmer Clippers report. Remember that. Adam Sheff there's usually pretty on it with this. He said that one source within the organization said that he dodged a bullet, but that he is expected to miss some time. But I mean, we know very familiarly with two atongo Veloah, just how devastating those hip injuries can possibly be. So definitely fingers crossed on that front. However, this text or Billy says, I have seen enough bench, Sam Darrell, then make Paul Andrew lock the new starting quarterback

7:10in Seattle, right, Billy? What? No, no. I mean, he'll be able, that defense is going to win him seven, eight games, maybe any might be able to win pull one out. He had that thing goes the Eagles on Monday night football. When he had to come in for Geno Smith and he let him down the game winning drive at the end. I think it was JSN's rookie year. But as long as they have Jackson Smith and Jigba out there, who just a reminder. He is so legit. He is so good. That's for it. Sorry, I'm getting Terry. I this is my fantasy receiver. Was he your number one pick? Yeah. He's. He's sort of an AJ Brown. AJ Brown is three weeks. He's got to be out, right? I don't know. It's an angle injury. He's going to miss some time. I heard three. If anybody has, you don't want to get injuries that early in the family. I took JSN number five. I was in the number five. It's over. Fifth overall. Yeah. What receivers went before him? Do you remember? Puka was still there. And so I decided not to. I think Jamar Chase was the only other receiver that went before them if I'm not mistaken. But Puka was still there and I opted for for JSN.

8:10So there you go. Sorry, I interrupted you. No, it's okay. And now I'm going to go way off. That's crazy. I heard the stat on the way in that of the last 50 quarterbacks to not play a snap in the preseason. The under the team under of those teams point total has gone under 35 times. So 35 out of 50. There's this thing. There's this thing happening where quarterbacks that don't play in the preseason. That first game really is like a preseason game for them and they really struggle. Now, it worries me a little bit tonight because Matt Stafford did take snaps for the Rams in the preseason. Brock Bird didn't. So something to watch. Isn't it funny too? Like the things we're paying attention to as it pertains to this Australian based game where you have the 49ers in the Rams is like the 49ers have been living there for seven months. Meanwhile, the Rams are like just landed. But we're getting all of these. We're getting all of these reports like the Rams players slept soundly on the 17 hour flight out there. And it's like they all have live flat seats. And it's like we're just like hearing all of these details. And it's just so funny what we're trying to somehow extract from that stuff.

9:13Like, oh, I think they're going to play well. They can be fresh. They slept on the flight. Like, who knows, man? Who knows? But there are also some reports. I don't know if this stuff is like even legit or not, but I just saw it on social media. So it has to be right. That the Rams even like sent as a tester. They like sent personnel out to Australia to like see how they were feeling after landing at that same time. And be like, hey, would you guys feel energized or up to like a workout or like a full blown kind of like physical endeavor? And so they were doing all of this testing like in the run up to deciding exactly how their travel light dinner area was going to look. They didn't take Aaron Donald on the trip partly because there was a 17 hour flight. And that makes sense. But that makes sense as far as sending people to the dance. Any small detail could make a different type of thing. What people did they send though? How many 300 pound offensive lines? That's true. That's true. They might have something different to say about that. The five-foot worth. That's crazy to me. Just, but I mean, just honestly just thinking about it out loud. Like the idea that they're just going to fly 18 hours in for a day, play a game and

10:14fly it out. Like, I don't know to me. That's crazy. Like I still get, you know, jet lag going to the west coast and 18. I've been on one flight from Seattle to London. And it took me like two days before I felt normal after getting to the... But do you feel it right away? Like I always hear about jet lag when I fly in a long trip. I don't feel it the first day when I land. It's maybe the day after. The longest trip I took was from Switzerland to Las Vegas and that was 12 and a half hours. But I mean, it's usually the day after. So maybe the Rams are looking at it. We won't have time to get jet lag because we're getting in there, playing a game where out of there already. I think it is all predicated on the time in which you are flying, right? Is it like overnight, like a red eye type of thing? And then how much do you sleep on that flight? Like that's really all to me. It is weighed upon. So like I don't tend to sleep super great on flights. Like I'll kind of be spotty. And so when I get off of a really long flight like that, like I'm tired, dude. And I feel it and it's like, all right, I need to get to like a real bed. I need to lay down that kind of thing. You know, it to me, but I've been on flights where just like, you know, randomly I was able

11:18to sleep for a good chunk of it. And those flights is like, oh, I feel a little bit better. Like I could get some stuff done if need be. I don't know about playing like a professional football game or anything like that. But it to me, it's just all predicated on. Can you sleep? Can you get the appropriate rest on the flight? If you get a bed that would make it a lot easier than us guys, where we're sitting with next to somebody next to us and getting our arms hit or shoulders hit by the stool, just his cart and all that. Yeah. And I'm pretty sure their setup isn't exactly like, you know, like Miles Garry is like, dude, I want the arm rest. I don't think they're arguing over that stuff. I'm pretty sure it's a little more luxurious than that. I still owe man 18 hours on this 18 hours in a plane. That seems rough. Yeah. I like the idea of being one of those interns or whatever they get sent to Australia and tested it. I was like, five to 145 pound intern Danny is just like, yeah, I feel up to doing some stuff. Like, all right. Thanks a lot, Danny. Appreciate that. Now fly back. Work if you can get it. Yeah. All right. Okay. What are you leaving us with here again? Two things.

12:19One real fast. I did bring this up in my show, but I was really sad to hear the news yesterday about Barry Melrose passing away. Yeah. I had a hit. Had him on my show 10 times over years. Neil Everett hooked me up with him 10, 12 years ago. He was one of my favorite guests and not a lot of people follow hockey, but to see the tributes that were on sports center last night and on social media that was great. And I almost felt like I lost a friend. Like I really knew him well, even though I didn't know him that well, but having him on the show is great. I did reach out to Neil Everett, who was very close to him and Neil just texted back. Yeah. The he was the best and just really sad to see that. I was, I just want to kind of chime into that the Barry Melrose thing hit me as well. You and I were talking about it before the show can all like, I don't know what it was, but he was the guy back in the day when you always watch sports center where I didn't know anything about hockey. I didn't even really follow hockey to be honest and see how the never team never really followed hockey, but I would watch him every time he was on intently because he was so good at his job and so fun to listen to. And it made me for a minute or two or however long he was on.

13:20I was interested in whatever hockey topic he was talking about. And it was just like one of those you connect. I feel like he connected with the audience in some different way because the amount of outpouring of people saying how much to the kind of got him yesterday to hear that Barry Melrose had died. He really was able to connect. I think through a TV screen because if you watch sports center, you saw him all the time. He was great. And I was surprised when I heard the news. It just how like kind of blown away it was right at the start of the football game. And I sat there for a couple of minutes. Just like, man, that hit me. Yeah. He had a lead sports center like a year or two ago from Parkinson's disease, but I didn't know it was going to happen this Sunday. Yeah, but 70 years old, not that old. And yeah, I don't know if it was just the image, right? If it was like the long greeced mullet, if it was like the snazzy suits that he would wear, it was just like this presence that he had. And I'm not like a huge hockey guy. But when I saw that news flash and that alert on my phone, it was like, oh, whoa, like I kind of was taken aback because yeah, there does seem to be this like exuberance that's

14:21attached to the idea and the image of Barry Melrose. And it was really jarring to hear that he had passed away. And yeah, I associate him with Neil Everett so much because Neil was always the guy that was kind of interviewing him on sports center. And they were like, you know, wrapping up the big game of the night. And he was getting into the granular details about that game and some of the other issues across the league. And it's like, again, as a non like real hardcore hockey guy, like I really relied on him to get a lot of that news. And a lot of that reaction and opinion on the game. And it just, yeah, there was just something really fun loving about him and his presence that that one hit even like non hardcore hockey fans. He like taught me the sport of hockey, basically, I would say you go on for every call of a day teaching me about hockey and it was great. And at a time, at a time where it's like you were already starting to see the the chord cutting and the peeling off of the traditional watching of sports center, right? Like that had already begun. And yet for Barry Melrose to have been on for as long as he was, he sort of bridged a

15:23little bit of those two eras of sports center and at least the espiance coverage of NHL hockey. And so for him to still have that impact, despite the way people were digesting this stuff, changing and evolving in real time while he was on the air, like that's kind of remarkable. When he went to LA to do sports center, he would stay at Neil Everett's house. That's how close they were. And the first time I had him on, I remember my first question, can you tell the listening audience? There were people that said hockey is kind of stupid. Why do they fight? And I said, why is fighting accepted? Why is it okay to have it in hockey? And his first response was, it's a tool. You can use it as a tool to get aggressive and intimidating. But I remember his answer for that just saying it's a tool, but you're right. He taught me things because he did know what he explained it in a way. He was kind of like the John Madden or Jay Billis at college basketball. He was the face Chris Hart call from the face of hockey one time. I don't think he was quite that, but I know what he meant by that because he was the face of ESPN as far as hockey coverage. And his Neil Everett would say, cool is the rule.

16:25That's right. That's right. Well, the other thing I was going to do and I was going to leave in a minute, I was going to take exception with you. And your first statement came out, I realized I had the wrong person. I saw you on Twitter early this morning where you said, Drake May is the fourth best quarterback in the NFL. I mentioned that on my show, what is wrong with Billy is the delusional. And I made a list of all the quarterbacks that are better than Drake May. And then I realized at the beginning of this show, it was Bill Simmons who came out with that. He thought you were really getting. Really? He does not listen to the show because I've been time and time. We've talked about this so many times about Bill Simmons calling him the fourth best quarterback. How many quarterbacks do you got? Let's hear your tough five. I don't have any specific order, but kind of at the top. Tell me all the quarterbacks. Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Matthew Stafford, Jared Goff, Aaron Rodgers, Dak Prescott, Jalen Hertz, I think are better than him. And I might throw one of Trevor Lawrence, Caleb Wilson, Caleb Williams, Baker Matefield,

17:32and of course, Zach Wilson. Justin Herbert. Justin Herbert, I forgot. That's another one. And I really thought it was you making Seattle wind sound even more impressive. That's what I thought you would do. Did you retweet that? Maybe, is that what it was? He retweeted it and then responded. I thought you wrote the same thing, though. That's the best point. You actually tweeted. I was, for the best, the best part of it. I got to know a little bit of troll mode last night on social media. Okay. Here's one thing that just happened to me on tour last night and got under my skin. It's like an unwritten rule. If your friends team has this quarterback, get hurt in the first five plays of a season or in a game. And it says, serious, as it might be for Sam Donald, you don't, you don't, you don't start making fun of your friend right away. And I, the Twitter trolls were out yesterday and got under my skin a little bit. So yeah, I had a fun little time on social media last night. You make fun of Aaron Rogers when he got hurt with the jets? No. No. I'm thinking so. Yeah, Petro, you didn't. No, I mean, yeah, like you would, I wouldn't even as like your friend and, and, and, I certainly wanted to, I certainly wanted to have tax of Gary. Yeah, I know. I know. Yeah.

18:32John Kong Gary. Yeah. You're right about how you would treat something like that. And like maybe like a few days later. Yeah. But like I wouldn't end the moment like that's a very emotional moment when you turn. It's like, banner night and then your quarterback goes down five plays. I'm on the radio now. I'm out there picking the Seagots to a cover the spread in the six pack of packs and I'm calling Drake May a bad quarterback. I got to be right about this. And we had it at three right. We had it at three. We got to push. I do have an example of something to say. You say don't listen to the show. You guys said something at the end of the show yesterday, which I have to mention because you were picking your teams for each division winner and playoffs in the Super Bowl. I knew you would pick Seattle a year ago when we were doing that. I picked Cincinnati and you guys mocked me and mocked me and I said when the healthy, they could be the AMC team in the Super Bowl. I really believe that they weren't healthy. You guys both picked Cincinnati now to win their division and go far in the play. I believe in this year. Yeah. Was it different here? There's a different year. Yeah. Besides a different year. Still in the five. Yeah. It's not on the track. Yeah.

19:32I mean, you guys mocked me for weeks about burrow and Cincinnati and that pick and you guys both come out and I couldn't believe what you did. Oh, so we can't like them any other season when you told me last year how bad they were. What's again, what's different this year? Yeah. I know. They made it as a move. They're healthier than they've been in a while. But they've been a little bit healthier. They're healthy. They're healthy. They could have made the Super Bowl last. Right. I still believe that. No. Well, of course, of course they weren't. So that's convenient. So we got to get it on record. What is your Super Bowl? We didn't really do the. The session. I will go. I have Buffalo. Please pick a bangle. In the AOC and I really I've eliminated teams that would make it against them. But I'll stay with them in the NFC. I'll go there a little easier. I think it'll be the Rams. I actually think that it could be the Detroit Lions. I wouldn't count them out like the Detroit Lions too. I know they've had some laws into this. This guy over here picks what you pick. I went really out on a limb. Did you pick Dallas? No, I went. I don't know. I'm sort of a loan on this branch here.

20:33I went with the Rams out of the NFC and the bills out of the AFC and nobody's picking them. She that's why I picked Cincinnati last year because you can't pick the obvious. It's like picking Kansas City every year. Well, I picked Baltimore like four years ago. You picked the bills. You picked the bills. It's a joke. Well, wait a minute. I did not. I picked them in the AFC Championship game and I didn't say who they're going to play yet. I usually do a final four. Oh, but we asked you about who is going to make it to the Super Bowl. You said the bills in the Rams. I said, but I said I kept it the side of who's going to be there in the AFC with Buffalo to get to that point. I, uh, okay. Well, how about we ask you that then who's going to make it to the Super Bowl or the second? It's easier to eliminate teams in the AFC. It really was. I don't know. I will pick now. I can't. I'm going to go with Cincinnati. Oh, I'm separated. I'm going to go down. I'm going to go down. I'm going to go down. I'm going to go down. I'm going to go down. I'm going to go down. 21:33I like it. And I do question even Buffalo because they've got a new head coach. Yeah, better than what I thought. I know. Yeah. When you think about the AFC and all the teams that could be there is Kansas City going to be back down for right now, uh, is Denver going to continue what they did last year. I don't have enough confidence in them. Baltimore. New coach Lamar has been hurt. Pittsburgh, little older, new head coach. Houston Texas. No England. No. Houston Texans are good. I can't think of a death. Usually you can pick up like two teams in each conference that should be there in the AFC. I really have a hard time picking that second. Yeah. Which is good and away. Yeah. Yeah. It's not going to be an expected team in a way. And the NFC, I'm not, I don't think Dallas will be that team. Although I think they do have the talent most of the time. Supposedly better on defense, but they say that every year. Uh, I wouldn't count out Philadelphia. I also wouldn't dismiss San Francisco. Oh, I don't think they're done yet. So I got to go with the Rams. So if I'm not mistaken, you just picked everybody. No, I pick the ramp. Detroit. Chris, do you want to get in on your super bowl predictions?

22:35I'm not too sure, but see Hawks for the win. See Hawks for the win. Wow, based on last night's game. That's our F1. Harder repeat. Well, I mean, it's hard when your cornerbacks hurt five players. There's the reason why he's our F1 expert and not our, he doesn't give the NFL minute. He gives the F1 minute. No, we appreciate that. Thanks for chiming in there. Chris and it Gary, nice bold pick there on the bank. Can I just answer one text and get you a thought? One person is texting and Gary might be the delusional one. Baker Mayfield is better than Drake May. Now based on last year, who's better? Well, I mean, Drake May was second in the MVP voting last year for what it's worth. But if you're taking body of work, you know, I think they'll learn. If you had a super bowl to play right now and you had to pick one of those two. I'm going to go make a little bigger. That's what I based it on earlier in the show when I was going over quarterbacks like that. Baker May. I mean, it's up. It's numbers. It's like 38 and 10. Touchdowns, intercepts, 43, 100. Oh, no, yeah, I'm really here. It was just more in the playoffs. Those last two games where nobody does. Nobody does.

23:35How about again, in two games, including the Super Bowl in last night against Seattle. He has thrown five picks. Has been sacked nine times and his O and two in those games. Billy likes that. That was, he was trying to think it through in real time. I've been there. We've all been there. Initially, he wanted to go bills and rams. But then I think we peer pressured him into not picking the bills and he went with the bangles again. Hey, I picked the Ravens like four straight years to make it to or win the super bowl. And that did not come to fruition. This will be the way to do it. Yeah, I watched that exactly what's going to happen. Watch. I saw this text. Imagine what the odds would have been for a prop at Drew Lock passing TD. Holy moly. You would have been swimming in cash today. Imagine all those people out there that had sand darnled over prop bets. That must be painful. Raise your quarterback five plays. That must be an awful feeling if you have money on like over yards or touchdowns. Or whatever that had some Aaron Rodgers Achilles vibes. Right. Remember that game. First game coming out with the jets and he has like the US flag that he carries out with him. And it was like this huge moment in front of the home crowd. And then that was the fourth snap was when he ruptured the Achilles.

25:39Yeah. And you knew right away. You knew right away with that one. And then this one when he jogs off and you're like, okay, I think he's going to be okay. He was definitely when he jogs off the funeral. But then we jog on feeling like, oh, it's a it's his hip. And then he hears his hip. Hips are terrible. So yeah, I was a little sensitive. People coming after me about Sam Donald getting hurt too soon. Too soon. Billy was going through the entire emotional roller coaster last night. I got to be honest. I sports hate the Patriots. I think now as much as any team. I really do. Why? But you've beaten them. They're no threat to you. I think it's a super bowl loss. When the sea ox do the interception on the one yard line. Injuries will decimate optimism each and every time. Yeah, man. I think we've all lived. If you're an NFL fan, you've lived through a lot of your hope and a lot of your dreams going into a season. You have witnessed and experienced that absolutely being evaporated by an injury, a key injury, or several injuries. So yeah, that's even before the season starts sometimes. Yeah. And I know in the case of my Lions, and there are some people who are flirting with the idea of the Lions, making it to the Super Bowl. And I love that. Don't emotionally do that to me just yet. I'm not prepared to deal with that disappointment again. But they have some injuries going in, including to their starting center. And so it's like, even that kind of stuff is like, ah, you know, it sort of prevents you from being that full level optimist, even for your team. Yeah, but, you know, odds are in your favor.

29:43The Lions have had some injury play seasons recently. So, you know, it's got to even out at some point, right? Yeah. It's probably a big reason that UH tends to do poorly on the road. There is probably something to that. And I do think part of the Rams thinking is that they don't want to have jet lag and that hangover going too far

30:45into next week. And I think they're thinking recovery time coming back from the trip as well. But apparently they are going to abide by, all right, this is, we are going to sleep at the same time we would sleep if we were still on the west coast. We are going to do everything according to that time frame. Even though the time there would depict a different type of sleep pattern or schedule, they're going to absolutely stay adhered to what would normally be their schedule on the west coast. They're going to try to mimic that as best they can. It's your setting. It's really making it. I'm really excited to watch a game tonight just to see how they play. I agree with Canoa on this. I think it was a W-E-A-K week one for college football. And a little bit of a game one. Kind of expected, I guess. It was a weird night to play. Billy, I'll give you that. They played on Wednesday because in the 90s, I guess they're playing Friday morning. So that would normally have been a Thursday game. But yeah, I felt bad for Sam. I never wished people to get hurt. So you're moving the NFL to your, if you're playing in these different countries to push the NFL to availability and all that in other countries. And the Rams come over 24 hours before the game. I think it's fine by the NFL. Why are you playing a divisional rival game week one in Australia? And the team that comes over to try to push the NFL to other countries comes over 24 hours before that. Like, that's killing me like that. What's the point of that? The good news is that the Niners have rallied up a lot of extra red jerseys for the game today. Yeah. They have been to like every camp, every way. They're trying to make it make them feel similar to have played that game in so fight tonight, which was the reason that the Rams went to Australia, but to have fewer Niner fans in their stadium. Yeah. No, that is pretty strange in all California matchup

35:49that just happens to be being played in Australia. We did have a text through just asked the same thing you did. Like, aren't there going to be some pregame, promotional responsibilities and requirements for these teams and for the Rams to fly in so late doesn't that sort of go run counter to what the NFL is trying to do as far as promoting the game. I think that's a really, really fair point without a doubt. Let me read you something here, Laurie, real quick. OK, this is Kyle Shanahan in his press conference. This is down in Australia. He says we're a little confused with, I'm just going to read the quote exactly. OK, we're a little confused with when I look at my clock and it says a time. And then I try to see my family's time. 36:52And we'll put in some on a Thursday. Friday is the final part of the game plan. Saturday we walk through and we play on a Sunday, which is a Friday in Australia and a Thursday in the US. 46:08i would make it so they're not like the most important games of the season because i think that then does a little bit of a disservice to the team so like having having rams forty-nine years in the ns u.s craze one not only just week one the week one in australia to me that's not it's like it i i'm very mixed on the idea of the international game just because yeah you understand it up it for the morning but i mean that too but you understand what the nfl and what roger cadet what the world they're thinking here right it's like a we want to give our product to other people we want them to be exposed to it that's how you expand your brand that's how you do all of that stuff raise your profile uh... especially when they are uh... in strong consideration of actually establishing a uh... team somewhere outside of the united states uh... that is probably happening in the not too distant future but to me it's like the measure of okay what's the quality of game that you're going to put on over there of verses do you want to give them just like a you know who cares game

47:09verses something like the rams forty-nine years which is you know a a marquee type of match up specially uh... in that division um... and then the other thing too is like the disservice it does to the fan base or the fan bases of these teams you know there's a reason why the nfl is by far the most popular sport in the united states uh... it's because of those passionate fan bases and so to take a what would be a home game away from a franchise like the forty-nine years or the rams or a fan base that has been so passionately in support of these teams like i don't know how i feel about that right you basically just say all right we're taking one of those games uh... for all these people that uh... pay an exorbitant amount of money for season tickets or you know want to plan to be able to attend the games and have at least one more opportunity to do so especially if it's a marquee match up like i have mixed emotions about that like i get the nfl's uh... motivation behind trying to do it i just don't know if it's all that cool especially to those fan bases that helped to build your product to be as popular as it is well especially in a situation like where there are

48:12teams that have legit home field advantages and if they're taking their uh... prime divisional rival game that's supposed to be at home and they have to go play another country that just seems wrong to me i mean that's that's a big advantage you're giving up in what could be the key game that the decides whether you want a division or not at the same time yet i don't want to send them you know uh... cardinals dolphins are the worst possible game you could put together so you kind of have to try uh... find the happy mediums so it's a little bit tough the other thing is i don't know if you've noticed this too but they did this this year like rand c-hawks why are they playing divisional games in week sixteen and week eighteen why can't it be spread out a little bit more why why is the point i understand they wanted to i think have one of those games on christmas and all that but why would you play the same opponent twice in three weeks why does that make any sense yeah yeah so there's a lot of schedule and things with the NFL that i think you could kind of pick at but i have the idea of of i'm even really playing any divisional game week one to me seems seems kind of crazy but playing it in australia is even crazier

1:03:45would be like and so far so good i'd say texger says uh... hey hypothetical question if you had started with an fcs opponent and new mexico state would they have been two and oh through the first two weeks i'm not sure if we're in a position to assume anything i mean yes the the likely hood is is much better but i don't know if this is a team that's in a position based on the what we have seen through two weeks where you can just notch those up as uh... victories i don't think you can do that this weekend and it is new mexico state this weekend that is true that is true coming off a couple of they have they haven't earned their love to just yet yeah they yeah i agree with that at the same time i do believe they would be two and oh that's just my own belief i think even though um... these games have looked bad and it's been a struggle on offense the reality is you were right there fourteen to six in the fourth quarter with uh... what was it five minutes left against you on lv and you were leading stanford in the fourth quarter of that game on the road at stanford so um... i'm yeah i would say that i believe that they would be two and oh i mean i do expect them to go out and win this week um... could i be wrong sure but i expect to why to come out

1:06:55this heir apparent uh... and it's just not as easy as that like there is still a lot of development and work that needs to take place but there definitely is a foundation there he can run uh... he can extend plays uh... he does have uh... you know a pretty strong arm but there are some decision making issues uh... and and at least in more of the intermediate throws some accuracy issues at times uh... that he needs to iron out but i think he has a chance of being really really good he's just not quite there yet that's all you mentioned tom Brady is that part of what it is about this guy because look again i have been surprised at just the level of of praise he's gotten from so many different people about how good he is it's you know i've been kind of like well let's wait and see how it does against some good teams they've continued to play not good teams is there a part of it that it's just it's the new England Patriots we saw tom Brady with the Patriots for so long and we're just waiting to anoint that heir apparent is the next guy that's got everyone super excited because i really do feel that the and lucky again that a great season last year not gonna lie about it but he was appointed very very quickly to be this breaking to the top five

1:07:59kind of guy where it's been hard to break into the top five the top five's basically been some kind of mix of air and rogers josh alan patrick home's Lamar Jackson uh... who would be the fifth up there that i'm forget i'm i don't forget someone that it's been like it's hard to get in that upper upper echelon of quarterbacks and being thought about that uh... from the media and it's like he just like jumped right in there all of a sudden quickly and i don't know if it has something to it that just it's a patriot he's a patriot you know everyone remembers tom Brady and all the similarities that you're quick to annoy them i don't know if that's part of the reason but it's always surprised me just how quickly people just jumped on board and got all up about drake maybe and as good as they think he is when i still thought there was a lot to prove well it's it's a little bit of that patriotic fandom right there they're pretty obsessed right i think there are in some ways when you look at him there are almost there's almost like a resemblance thing to like a younger tom Brady so there's that and man he was really good in different stretches of the year last year i mean he made some throws i remember in that buffalo game uh... he made some

1:09:00throws there's like wow there aren't a lot of guys in the lead that could make that throw while he's being held on to buy a defender uh... and still complete a pass like he does pretty dynamic things um... i just think he got exposed in the postseason those last two games certainly in the super bowl by Seattle and he got exposed again last night and so it just shows hey look he's not there yet and it's okay it's okay to not be there yet it's okay for him to not be on the level of the guys that you're talking about josh allen and joburo and the marjacks and patch him homes and like whatever the you know we want to add to the list there um i just uh it it it it it just it's okay for him not to yet have to be anointed like let him grow let him suffer some of the pains and some of the mishaps and the failures that's also part of it that's also part of the development process that will only hopefully make him better and that's that's fine that's fine if he's not the best in the league yet like this is kind of uh... be a little more realistic here all right next question oh there's another one very timely here uh... on the on the part of the bucket drew lock prove to be a guy you can plug in when necessary it worked out for the most part last

1:10:05night he got the dub current backup cubies in the NFL that you would most trust in spot action i guess we can do almost a de facto like uh who are you like reserve cubies i mean that you would maybe most trust in uh in in a tough situation marcus mario to always comes to mind first i agree with that i agree with that to me one of the better backup quarterbacks in the league for pretty much ever since he lost his starting job uh... so yeah i put mario to up there uh how we feel about mac jones i think mac jones definitely a plug and play a guy right he could be a starter again he could be a starter in the NFL again i think his his tenor how long was he in new inland like three three four years i mean his tenor you know he didn't get that long of a chance i mean he's one of like if you talk about who name a quarterback that could most resemble sam d'arnold's trajectory i put mac jones in there easily i think he could end up being a starter in a few years for for a little bit of a run i do think he's that good mac jones is a good one i like that when i put in up there i mean joe flacco has to always be right i mean he just always has to be right he's

1:11:09been doing it for a hundred years now yeah yeah he's he's another one drew lock again he's he did all right with siano he had that memorable money night game against the eagles i mentioned earlier where he won the game when jino smith was out so um true lock is good a lot of it too is it seems like certain franchises more than others also for whatever reason have um game plan in a way that allows their backups to be more successful than others too but uh yeah there's no doubt about it i think you know mario to mac jones that be at the top of the list uh new punty maybe it would be a guy you'd want to put up their davis mills you like for nandam and those of who technically right now is back up oh i guess he is a backup yeah well he shoots at the top then i guess michael panics junior technically is a backup at the moment too well he's got one knee so that's a problem to get in the start in week one for the Atlanta Falcons all right next question uh we're changing sports was umpire dug eddings out of line when he told rookie pitcher hansel rinkoan to adjust his crooked hat did you see this i did this surprise we haven't talked about this we didn't really

1:12:13get a chance to get further into this but uh basically uh dug eddings told the rookie pitcher who like a lot of pictures by the way i think of like cc subatheia and all of these like uh you know really famous uh pictures a lot of them happen to be left handed pal eldritch is always pointed out of the fact that um uh the um uh left handed pictures tend to kind of have their cap like a little bit more skewed one way or the other but you have this rookie pitcher for the cardinals uh and he was told by eddings to uh straighten his hat uh and eddings basically said at least according to accounts uh that you're not going to wear your hat like that on my field and then that uh got a reaction uh for that is completely insane yes from the cardinals dug out and blah blah and he ended up sort of uh you know ejecting uh the cardinals manager he ended up uh just kind of creating this huge stirr and so it uh it did seem to appear as though uh he was kind of taking charge like all right this is this is literally what he said my field was he out of line uh completely one thousand percent

1:13:16is there a rule against this is there's some rule that I don't know about that you can't move your cap a little bit there was I mean it was a very bad look and um yeah I mean these these umpires these days you're seeing this I don't know if it's just hey man it's been 145 games getting close to the end of the year we're getting a little tired we're getting a little cranky but there's been a few umpire things recently but to me this was the worst one like you're not going to wear that on my field dude he's he's tipped his cap a little bit like one way or the other like who cares why do you care so much about this it means nothing it just you look ridiculous yeah I thought he was completely out of line I actually thought that umpire should have been suspended yeah it's ridiculous like he's under the impression that people are actually like buying tickets to watch him umpires like that's just not the case dude you're not doing yourself any favors here when you're overly sensitive at a time where people are talking about robo umpsen and you know the the ABS system and all of this stuff it's like you know there's already a lot of flak that umpires take and some of it is justifiable some of it is not uhpire you to have that approach uh and and for it to come out of

1:14:16and he said that the opposing catcher was the one that complained about it and so that's why he brought it up I don't know there's just all these different sort of takes and he hasn't necessarily had to answer any questions directly about it um but uh yeah just for you to have that kind of ego out there where it's like no no you got to wear your hat a certain way if he was wearing the hat completely backwards okay that's one thing but it was just a little scoot and we've seen that a hundred times yeah from from other pictures and from other players like that was nothing and for him to have that kind of approach there uh that's just that's just way out of line I mean absolutely an appropriate to be so offended by it to be so upset about it and then the whole you're not going to do that on my field kind of thing that's that's that's that's an excuseable okay uh next one uh is there any chance that the threat by the SEC of possibly voting lsu out of the league is or was legit uh so the SEC basically suggesting hey look we're going to have a vote among the presidents and chancellors uh and we are going to address whether or not to keep lsu as a member

1:15:18of the SEC as just bananas that we have gotten to this point lsu one of the pillars of that conference and so is this at all a real threat or was this just an empty threat just posturing on the part of the SEC no there's no real threat to this and whatsoever you're not you're not booting out an lsu type school in an era where building up your conference and having the best possible schools in it is as important as it's ever been with these tv deals you're not getting rid of a school like lsu yeah no there's no way there's no way that that would be because in some ways like you would be doing lsu a favor right because lsu then could just go in what like shop itself around to like the other power conferences and you don't think the big ten would be like come on in you know even if there are a lot of uh disagreements with the way lsu was going about its business this is clearly just the scc trying to flex it's authority to try to keep lsu in line and you know what to a degree it has worked because lane kiffon decided not to add those two NFL training camp uh you know cut ease uh and waved players to the roster and so they did capitulate to what the scc was asking

1:17:26football field he is uncovered he's the smaller guy he's the smaller guy he's not probably the more NFL prospecti not not prototypical but dude this guy is just awesome he's unbelievable did i don't know if you're watching the staffer game he was just open all the time there was nothing they can do like you know going into the game you're playing mayami the first thing you're trying to do is slow slow down malachite toney and they can't he did he just is unguardable he's awesome man i'm a huge fan of his i know everyone says jeremia smith is and he probably he's probably the best receiver but this is like a one a one b situation in terms of probably they are college because malachite toney is really really good yeah i think it's just going to be one of those where it's sort of uh you know we'll waver from one to the other every week right one will have the bigger games statistically the other guy will have the the big game the next week and even this past weekend right you had uh my amy again stanford malachite toney 12 catches 234 yards and three touchdowns i think there was like a my amy single game record somewhere in there uh and then you had jeremia smith against ball state and it was ball state but eight catches 151 yards two tds

1:20:32match uh and that was an unbelievable i watched so much of those two matches uh but because everything went the distance that Shelton alcaraz match did not start until 11 p.m. local time uh it went until about three forty one or something in the morning the stadium was still packed by the way with just had to be the most insane human beings on the face of the earth uh but like tennis enthusiasts through and through how do we feel about uh the scheduling of the u.s. open over there i love it i love it for one reason and one reason only i live in Hawaii six hours behind it's perfect that was a live match at nine o'clock at night that was incredible i'm not a tennis watcher you better believe i watched the last set of that uh match because yeah it's live sports at nine o'clock at night what's better than that yeah that's absolutely right i mean i'm over there uh sitting in front of my tv it's about nine thirty and i'm watching the very ending of this crazy Shelton alcaraz topsy turvy back and forth match uh it was incredible theater uh the tiafowl michaelson

1:22:34let's get to our last segment of course traditionally it is as always our best and our worst best and worst all right wish when you want to start with here today billy why don't you start with your worst let's close it up today okay i'll start with uh my worst and uh we mentioned it at the front end of the show during the handoff with Gary but uh this was uh something that i was surprised uh the way that it hit me when i got the alert on my phone that uh es pn had announced that very melrose former NHL player uh and coach uh who was as beloved an analyst of any professional sport on es pn as anybody i think but in this case it was uh as a hockey analyst uh and he was there for over 25 years by the way uh pad passed away at the age of 70 uh he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2023 that led to his retirement from es pn uh but he had joined the network in 1996 i'll always associate him and his analysis and this is coming from a guy who wasn't like a huge hockey guy so uh in many ways i just kind of learned about hockey in in a very small way from berry melrose

1:23:35and his segments which uh for many many years were primarily with uh our own neo-leverid right and so that kind of made it even more special to see their relationship the way they would kind of banter with each other it was a really wonderful thing and um again as a as a non real hockey guy for me to see that alert and for me to kind of get hit like oh man that stinks like um it harkens back to a time on es pn where i was like this is um this is special this is different like these are personalities that you feel uh you have an almost like intimate level of knowledge uh from and an intimate relationship with like he was like a buddy on the air on national television that's a very rare sweet spot for any personality or analyst to hit and he was one of the few that hit it no it's really well said you're totally right we talked about it early on the show that i didn't follow hockey you didn't really know anything about hockey but those berry melrose segments were the best and that's why i'm making myself the worst for mine because i tried to do this thing when we're talking about it and fit in neo-everts line because if you remember when neo would do it with berry
