Let’s Talk Newton – Jasper County Sheriff Brad Shutts

0:00Welcome to today's Let's Talk Newton powered by the Knoxville Raceway. Today we're talking to Jasper County Sheriff Brad Schutz about a new canine that's being added to the department. So get in the new canine. Yep, first one. Oh, we used to have one share of how it was here for a time period. But it kind of got away from it. But yeah, we'll bring it back. Yeah, now this one came from a long ways away, right? Texas from Slovakia, how that happened? Texas from Slovakia. So found a trainer training program up in west of Minneapolis. And that's where his dog supplies come from. That's he's retired law enforcement canine from the Minneapolis metro area. And that's he's been doing it many years. And that's that's who he we get to the dogs from. He goes over picks out the dogs and Slovakia.

1:02And then they're shipped over here. Oh, yeah. I guess they're out of Buffalo, Minnesota. Is that what I saw? Yes. Yep. Buffalo, Minnesota. Okay. And who's his trainer going to be here with you guys? Wyatt Dillon. He he's been on the department. A little while, a couple of years. And he was interested in doing it. He's a good deputy, great, great motivation. And he's he's up for the for the task. Now they already been paired together for a little while. Yeah. Yeah. June 24th, we went up to to Minneapolis and met Tex. And yeah, they've been together ever since. And he's got some training coming up. So what's what training is he going to be doing? From from what Texas just a just a normal dog. Now he doesn't have some obedience in him, but he'll be trained in drug detection, apprehension, tracking.

2:02And it's a it's with a large large group. I said about 10 other dogs and handlers. And that's a 12 week process. Wow. And yeah. Now I understand that some donations helped make this possible, right? Yeah. Yeah. We received a generous donation or grant from the American Kennel Club. There's a adoption program, police adoption program. And then also we had a local anonymous donor that donated to us as well. And a vet service at a coal fax is going to be providing his veterinary care. I understand. Yeah. Rebecca Smith. She is one of the founders of crisis of Canine of the Midlands. Which we also have those crisis canine support dogs here in Jasper County. But yeah, she's offered to to give him his vet care. And so we have a supplier for some food for the food forum.

3:05And so it's it's coming together very nicely. Jasper County Sheriff Brad Schutz joining us on today's Let's Talk program. Now the only dogs you have now are the like the crisis dogs, right? That, you know, emotional support. Correct. Yeah. We had a German shepherd. Danny Stevenson when he was here. He was a handler. That was Timber. He later retired due to his hips. I was sure it offered. He came. We had a dog named Popeye. For a short time period. He didn't he didn't work out the best and we end up getting another German shepherd. I named nuke. And he was he retired with Sergeant Cross after numerous years of service. And now we have tax. And how do these dogs help you guys? Are there a great benefit to the department? There are great benefit. Would you lie to him? For drug sniffs. During warrants.

4:06I text will be a member of the Central Iowa regional tag team. Once he gets up and going and gets his training in, he'll start with the tag team to offer support. Again, apprehension of individuals. It's a partner out there with the deputy. At any time if the deputies in the stress or or something is needed from the dog. He has a button that he can head on his belt and the dog door opens on the vehicle. And here they come, you know, to help their to help their partners. Wow. I didn't know they had a special. It's a door. That's kind of neat. Yeah. Yeah. It's a package that comes with the the canine kennel that we had to buy to go in his vehicle. It alarms for heat detection if it gets too hot. If the vehicle is shut down or get too hot, it actually sends them a page. And to say that the vehicle is shut down, it's getting hot.

5:07The windows automatically roll down. There's an auxiliary fan that pulls air in to the kennel so he can stay cool. A lot of different things have evolved since we initially had timber back in the day. Sounds like it. Yeah. That's great. I'm sure it's going to be a great addition to the sheriff's apartment there. It'd be great when he gets his training done about 12 weeks training, right? Yep. Yep. A one down 11 to go after today. So we're excited to get that white back here and develop this program. Okay.
