Labor's Smelt Wins Nightcliff By-Election

0:00On March 9th, here's the latest out of Sydney. Labor's Ed Smelt has claimed victory in the nightcliff by election in Australia's Northern Territory. A final check count on Monday sealed the deal, boosting his lead to 158 votes over Green's candidate Suki Doris Walker. The vote happened on Saturday after the seat became vacant. Green's member of the legislative assembly, Kat McNamara, resigned in February for health reasons, leaving the position open. Back in the 2024 general election, McNamara made history as the first Green's lawmaker in the Northern Territory Parliament. She beat Labor's Natasha Files by a razor-thin 36 votes. Primary votes showed Greens at 33% and Labor at 29% hit by a 4% swing against them. Still, Smelt surged ahead with 79% of preferences from the country liberal party and 41% from independent Phil Scott.
