释迦牟尼佛住在舍卫国给孤独园时，座下有一千二百五十位大比丘弟子跟着修行。那时，佛祖发现有越来越多的比丘开始喜好精美服饰、名闻利养及积蓄各种物品，并且这种行为有增无减。佛祖看到后，就为他们开示贪欲的危害：“夫贪欲者，现损身命，终归三涂，受苦无量。”意思是说贪图五欲的人，不仅现世会损害身命，来世还会堕入三涂恶道，受苦无量。
