Kiley Leaves GOP, Runs as Independent

0:00In Durham, it's March 10th. Here's what is happening. California Congressman Kevin Kylie announced Monday that he is leaving the Republican Party to serve as an independent effective right away. The two-term lawmaker made the switch amid a challenging re-election fight after his district lines were redrawn. Earlier this week, Kylie said he would run in California's sixth congressional district, a Democratic-leaning area around Sacramento without a party. He considered challenging another Republican in a safer spot, but chose this tougher path instead. Kylie plans to keep caucusing with Republicans to hold onto his committee roles. He told reporters he will be the only independent in the House. This narrows the Republican majority to 217 to 214, with one independent. The last House independent was Justin Amash of Michigan, who left the GOP in 2019. Redistricting battles, sparked by fights in Texas and California, have forced several incumbents like Kylie to rethink their strategies just to stay.
