One hour at the best and the rarest in Rillman Blues. Well, today is our Christmas edition, and we're going to have an hour of Christmas blues. Who better to start with? Joe Turner, a guy who has a lot of fun to be around. He loves to drink, and he loves to good time. So it's Joe and Christmas date boogie.
But then I ain't got a thing to do. Been all my time making every love to you. You're really pretty baby, as sweet as you can be. You're really pretty baby, as sweet as you can be. I pray that one of these days you belong to me.
My name is Joe, turn your mind, see me around most of the old time. My name is Joe, turn your mind, see me around most of the time. But when you don't see me baby, please keep me on your mind. Now you heard my story every words. You heard my story every words in mine. Once in a while call me up some time. Joe Turner there, Christmas date blues from 1949 with the Pete Johnson Orchestra, Pete Johnson and Piano Maxwell Davis on Turner. That's a nice track to start with. If my voice is a little husky, little low and quiet today, well,
it's because I've been attacked by some bug or other. It's not that I'm trying to emulate Bob Harris. Anyway, Bob can talk louder than I can because he can sit on his wallet to get closer to the microphone. Our Christmas fairy this year is Mabel Scott, and here she is with Boogie Woogie Santa Claus. He lives up in the mountains like a hermit in a cave. He never had a haircut and he never broke his shape. He's a Boogie Woogie Santa Claus. The Boogie Woogie Santa Claus.
The Boogie Woogie Santa will bully all your blues away. Rock, rock, rock, rock, Mr. Santa. Jump, jump, jump, Mr. Santa. He's got no presents for your treat or candy for your socks. But when he starts the Boogie the whole town rocks. The Boogie Woogie Santa Claus.
Mama get your hat, put your best dress on. We're gonna really jump a joy on a creed one more. We're the Boogie Woogie Santa Claus. The Boogie Woogie Santa Claus. The Boogie Woogie Santa will boogie all your blues away. Rock, rock, rock, Mr. Santa. Jump, jump, jump, Mr. Santa. The Boogie Woogie Santa will boogie all your blues away. Whaaaat? Maible Scotland, Boogie Woogie Santa Claus. Okay, let's get down home now. Let's have some Texas blues. This is Smoky Hogg and it's a Smoky Hogg the ever-eratic, undisciplined Smoky Hogg. And my Christmas baby.
Baby, this is Christmas, Will you be my Santa Claus? Yeah, this is Christmas, Baby, Will you be my Santa Claus? If you be my present woman, I won't love no one else at all. I want you to come out in the morning, Oh, and let I was at the night. Yeah, come early in the morning, And let I was at the night.
If you be my present, Baby, You know you will be truly right. If you be my Santa Claus, Treat me like my mother and father-day. Yeah, be my Santa Claus, Baby, Treat me like my mother and father-day. You'll be nice to me woman like me when I was a nine year old kid.
I must have spent years practicing that ending. That was Smokey Hulk there from 1948 on the modern label, My Christmas Baby. He was in a communist nightmare. Talking of nightmares, the next song I'm moving on to the country spot this week. Some of you may have listened to last year's show and I played the celebrated grand margot run over by a reindeer by Elmo and Patsy. Well, that was something of a hit and soon as they got any money, Elmo and Patsy split up. But Elmo went on to have a solo career, which gradually went down and down. And on the way down, he made this follow up record, which I guess appeals to those of us who present radio shows. Maybe no one else, but anyway, I hope you like it. Don't make me play that grand mar song again by Dr. Elmo. Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Elwood, the Midnight DJ, on radio station K.H.I.C.K.
Now I try to run a quality show and all my fans will tell you so, except Christmas much to my dismay. Oh, no, don't make me play that grand mar song again. Though that request line glows and glows, just as bright as Rudolph's nose, I'll do anything. You say I'll play them barkin' dogs all day, but please don't make me play that grand mar song again. Eric Christmas, I get frosted when Port grandma gets accosted and all them weirdos enjoy her suffering. And that Elmo guy just keeps on smiling while in royalties. Keep on piling, and the worst part is, he can't even say. Oh, no, don't make me play that grand mar song again. Though that request line glows and glows, just as bright as Rudolph's nose, I'll do anything. You say I'll play them barkin' dogs all day, but please don't make me play that grand mar song again.
Now, a word from our sponsor. Friends, it's that time of year again that just makes you want to get out there and charge. And while you're doing it, why not have playing in the background? Our collectors give set of 24 of the most beloved Christmas carols of all time. Classics like, you bumped your noggin on my toboggin' or, hey, hey, Grandpa's got a brand new nag. To order now, dial 1-900 fruit cake. And now, back to you, Elwood. Thanks, Elmer. So anyhoo, I told a station manager, and he'd have to choose between me and her, because that grand mar song is a moral abomination. So he says, son, our ratings are fine, and furthermore, our sponsors are fine, and I'm transferring you to the FM classical station. Oh, no, don't make me play that grand mar song again. Though that request line glows and glows, just as bright as Rudolph's nose, I'll do anything you say I'll play them barkin' dogs all day, but please don't make me play that grand mar song.
Don't make me play that grand mar song. Don't make me play that grand mar song again. Mmm, barking dogs, that's given me an idea. In the meantime, let's play something sensible. This is Sonny Boy Williamson, the second, Rice Miller, a very cantankerous, letterless old man, but a lot of fun to be around, provided you didn't take his comments too seriously. He was very, very honoured on his backing groups. I'm glad I didn't actually get around to backing him, because some people really scarred by the evening. Anyway, this is Sonny Boy Williamson. It's from his 1969 album, Bummer Road, and it's Santa Claus. Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus.
My baby was shopping yesterday, so I'm home by what you need for Santa Claus. My baby was shopping yesterday, so I'm home by what you need for Santa Claus. I'm gonna take mine with me, but I'll leave you on, and mine's just a drop. So that's dark, meet around me. Looking in all of my baby's just a drop. Well, that's dark, meet around me. Look at all of my baby's just a drop. Santa, Santa, Santa, Santa, Santa. Trying to find out what did she bought me for Santa Claus? Well, I pull out the bottom dress of drop, the land need a got made in cold alone.
Santa, Santa, Santa. Well, I pull out the bottom dress of drop, the land need a got made in cold alone. I was just trying to find what she brought me for Santa Claus. Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus. The bully's walking on the shoulder. What you doing with Joanne and that woman just a child? Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Santa Claus. I ain't the bully to let her my baby. Don't let me. Sean, why should I find my Santa Claus? I just keep on pulling out all of my baby dresser drop. I'm the one, the one, the one, the one. I walk out of the boot and land it on. She look like a man and pull out all the lady dresser drop. I'm the one. Yes, I walk out and lift the bullies and a land it on.
She looking man and pull out all the lady dresser drop. What do you say I can't deliver a shoulder judge? The boy just trying to find his Santa Claus. Oh, yeah. The armistakeable harmonica sound of Sunnyboy Williamson the second. And Santa Claus on chess. Okay, let's get around now to the rare record spot. And this week it's Chippy Hill one of my favorite blues singers from the 20s. This is from 1928. It's on Vakalian, Vakalian 124. It's Chippy Hill with tamper red and Christmas man blues. Want somebody, have mercy on for me.
I ain't got nobody to trim my Christmas tree. Santa Claus is coming. My dog is hanging on the wall. Santa Claus is coming. My dog is hanging on the wall. And bring me a man. Don't bring nothing at all.
Santa Claus is coming. Santa Claus is coming. Santa Claus is coming. If you ain't got a good one, kind of do the best you can. You find me weeping. Everybody here's unknown. Bring me a man to cure these Christmas blues.
Chippy Hill there with tamper red on the slide guitar. I would expect Georgia Tom on piano, although I'm not sure that anybody knows for sure. That was Christmas man blues from 1928. Let's get a little bit more up to date. The jazz spot this week. This is a guy who I think is very much underrated these days. He was popular. He was too popular in the 60s and he had a number of hits. That probably counted him out of consideration as a serious jazz pianist. But I think he was great. This is Ramsey Lewis and it's here comes Christmas.
Ramsey Lewis there and here comes Christmas. You're listening to the keynote club on Sheffield Live, 93.2 FM and on the net at www.SheffieldLive.org. Now here's a new artist that I haven't come across before. This track was sent to me so I don't know anything about it. But it's one riff roughing and it's Christmas baby. Well it's Christmas time baby.
Santa Claus knocking at my door. Yes it's Christmas time baby. Oh Santa's knocking at my door. Well he's got a bag full of goodies. At my not too famous standing in my door. Well I started up through my chimney. Just to see why I could find. You know I started up through my chimney. Just to see why I could find. Yes I met on Santa coming down the chimney.
He was bringing that modifying baby of mine. I sit around last Christmas with my mouth pulled out. I was weird about my baby. In the way she was cutting out. So I got in touch with old Santa. And I told him all the score. He brought my natural baby. Now I don't worry anymore. Santa Claus Santa Claus. Well you sure been good to me. Well you brought my natural baby for Christmas. I'm happy as a man can be. Oh Merry Christmas baby. Riff ruffing there and Christmas baby.
Well we don't usually allow animals in the keynote club. Except of course for the occasional naked snake dancer. But we do allow service dogs. And there's a bunch of them here to entertain you. Yes you guessed it. It's the dingle dogs.
Next week the performing seals. Let's play something a little more uplifting. This is the Reverend H.B. Crum, an unlikely name. H.B. Crum and the Golden Keys. You could choose almost any gospel song. Couldn't you for Christmas. But I like this one. It's so glad I'm here. And now sing in my song.
Yes I am. I could have been dead. I could have been dead. I could have been dead. I could have been dead. I could have been dead. I could have been dead. I could have been dead.
I could have been dead. I could have been dead. I could have been dead. I could have been dead. I could have been dead. I could have been dead. That was the Reverend H.B. Crum and the Golden Keys. So glad I'm here. You're listening to Sheffield Live on 93.2 FM and on the web at www.Sheffieldlive.org.
It's the keynote club with your host Bob Hall. Sheffield Live is supported by listeners like you and our station manager also does a paper round in her spare time. But if you would like to become a member and support this radio station then please drop us a line at www.Sheffieldlive.org. It's only £10 and hey it keeps us all in business for another year. If you like this kind of music then do call up and support us. I have to leave you for a moment but I will be back in a flash. Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Or by now we're getting a bit used to winter. We're like soldiers in the middle of a campaign growing heartened to discomfort and better able to take it. And looking with longing towards the day when the war is won and there'll be plenty of everything again including that good Olga Cole. But like good soldiers we can't afford to let down now the victories in sight. We must work harder than ever to get every bit of heat from the core we get. Make it go further and use less.
We must figuratively tighten the belts on our cold bins and wave into old man winter with a little less fuel and a little more heat from every time. That can help make hitters go squat. Here's to you baby. Make Christmas bring you happiness. Oh here's to you baby. Make Christmas bring you happiness. I want you to have a good time. Like we did on all the rest.
Here's Merry Christmas baby. Happy New Year. Happy holidays Christmas. Don't curve it once a year. Here's to you. Make Christmas bring you happiness. I want you to have a good time. Like we did on all the rest. Oh the brothers my love. Another Christmas tree. Remind me of your love. That leads so much to me. Here's to you. Make Christmas bring you happiness. I want you to have a good time baby. Like we did on all the rest. Oh.
Oh. Oh. Well and joy, all this out together. Christmas dinners and everything. We'll enjoy ourselves together Christmas dinners and everything we'll share every little pleasure Every Christmas brings us to you Make Christmas bring you happiness I want you to have a good time Like we did along the rest I wanna be home with you baby When new years roll around We'll make our resolution before the sun goes down Here's to you, honey Make Christmas bring you happiness
Want you to have a good time Like we did along the rest For us, we'll happily make today Nothing but so much I think that's your game It's an adventure ん The inimitable sound of BB King there there. That track is called Christmas Celebration and let's go down to Louisiana and do a little bit more celebrating. This is Christmas in Louisiana. It's from Johnny Allen and it's on the alligator label.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, I'm joyin' oh else, you know well. So, Christmas, the L always yin. God don't miss you, the possibilities of form, Sounds excite, for a valor present. Mama becrew the combo. Papa's I should be your fan. I'm prosperity. Mama ain't in my parade. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. I'm sure you know well. It's a Christmas dollar illusion. Got some fun, too. That's what I want to say. That's what I want to say. Mama ain't in my parade. Mama ain't no fun, too. Mama ain't no fun, too. I know well.
Mama ain't no fun, too. َI'm ready to take your leave. It's about to get hard at the point. This is my turn. I'm going to have some fun. My friend Blue Singer, Fruitman Jackson, says that the occasions don't do nothing but
sing about food. I guess there's some truth in that, that was Johnny Allen and Chris was in Louisiana on the alligator label. Now let's go down to Texas, another man who liked his food, this was this is Lightning Hopkins, a really prodigious player. He had a little bit of a hit with this, he had a deck of single which had Merry Christmas on one side and happy new year on the other side. It's a little bit scuffed this one but I hope you won't mind that. This is Merry Christmas, Lightning Hopkins. Merry Christmas now baby, darling, it's you glad to be home.
Yeah, we're gonna take our Christmas for ourselves, so we'll know there is nothing wrong. Hang up your stocking, oh Santa Claus gonna come to you. Hang up your stocking, do you know, oh Santa Claus gonna come to you. I'm gonna buy you something, put it in the brain. Tell me what else is you gonna do, here you gonna do. I know you're gonna be sweet, darling.
Now don't say the clock come round, with your long bills hanging on his feet. Oh Santa Claus gonna come round, with your long bills hanging on his feet. Yeah, you're not waiting on my little woman, she coming home on Christmas day. Lightning Hopkins there on decker, that was Merry Christmas. Got this record, got this record, got this record!
Yes folks, it's time for the challenging record of the week and this one I've chosen particularly as my Christmas present to our station manager, this is a tune that she always wanted to hear, I'm not sure that will apply to the rest of you, but it's Gaila Peeley and I want a hippopotamus for Christmas. Don't want a dog, don't think he'd think her dog, I want a hippopotamus to play with and enjoy. I want a hippopotamus for Christmas, I don't think Santa Claus will mind you, he won't have to you.
I've got this hippo, he's bringing him through the front door, that's the easy thing to do. I can see me now on Christmas morning, creeping down the stairs. Oh, what's your end, what's the price, when I open up my eyes to see a hippopotamus, Hello, a hippo, he wrote a standing there, I want a hippopotamus for Christmas. Oh, where's the bottom of the zoo? No cross the dine, no line up the russes. I only like it, the bottom of the zoo. And here's the bottom of the zoo, like we do. Mom says the hippo would eat me up a thin, She'd just say the hippo is a vegetarian. There's lots of room for him, And our two carver rides, I'd keep the car in the zoo. I'd keep the car in the zoo,
I'd keep the car in the zoo, I'd keep the car in the zoo, I'd keep the car in theяв room, I would keep the car in the zoo, I'd keep the car in the zoo, I'd keep the car in the zoo, Look where he hey, Let's go. Thank you, bringing my guitar back. Yeah, that's interesting. Yeah, thank you. The appalling Gala PV, sad to say, as she was only 10 years old when she made that record and she did actually make a lot more records as well, all about the same quality.
But she was, that was a hit and her fan club was hit in 1953 and her fan club got together and they clubbed their money and they bought her a baby hippopotamus, only in America. So only in America would you hear Charles Brown and Santa's Blues. But I got to tell old Santa, what's on my mind, Lord I got to tell old Santa, what is on my mind? Well I know I've been a good boy, now it's getting Christmas time.
We're so hard for my baby, don't know why she went away. We're hard for my baby, don't know why she went away. All I ask you Santa, make me glad on Christmas Day.
You know what, I'm just happy to be with you. I'm so happy to be with you and I'm so happy to be with you too. I'm so happy to be with you too, I'm so happy to be with you too. The Santa Claus, Santa Claus, listen to my plea, Santa Claus, listen to Santa Claus, listen to my plea, Don't blame your nothin' for Christmas, but my daily day on the beach.
Some nice west coast blues there from Charles Brown, Charles Brown and Piano, accompanied by Johnny Moore's three blazers, Johnny Moore's the guitarist. From the sound of it, I guess that'd be late forties and probably on the exclusive label. We haven't played any old-timey music so far this week, so let's reberty that omission. This is a track that I really like quite a lot. It's Fiddling John Carson and Christmas time will soon be over. Christmas time will soon be over. Christmas time will soon be over. Christmas time will soon be over.
To be over, to be over, to be over, to be over, to be over, to be over, then we'll join the band. To be over, to be over, to be over, to be over Come on, Gav, let's go through a bike, come on Gav, let's go through a bike, come on Gav,
let's go through a bike, then we'll join the band.
Fiddling John Carson there and Christmas time will soon be over. We've got time for a couple more tracks and I think I'll have a couple of new year tracks. This is another West Coast band leader, Roy Milton, who had the great Camille Howard on piano, and this is Roy Milton with his band Camille and Bill Gatherer doing the tantasax solo. This is New Year's resolution. Hey, Pop, what's the matter with you, ma'am? Heard his New Year just to know that like you saw it at the world. Yes, I saw it. I've been misled, I've been mistreated, I've been misused. Far she really made a chunk out of you. Yeah, but I made a New Year's resolution and I'm really going to get a toll.
What's he going to tell her? I'll tell you what I'm going to tell her, get a load of this. I made my New Year's resolution, tell you what I'm going to do. Just forget about the whole year and the things we used to do. Going to take instead of giving, because my lesson I've learned, going to get the things I wanted and give nothing in return, because I've changed my way and I don't care what you do. I've made my New Year's resolution and maybe this time we're through. I'm going to deal them from the bottom and go play it fair at all. Please believe it, baby. I'm going to have myself a bowl. Going to give up my apartment and you know they're hard to find. I don't want no last year's memories running through my weird mind, because I've changed my way and I don't care what you do.
Yes, I've made my New Year's resolution and maybe this time we're through. I have changed my way of living. You don't fit in my new plan so you might as well forget it and go find another man cause I've changed my way. Yes, I've changed my way. I've made my New Year's resolution and maybe this time we're through.
You have been listening to the keynote club with your host Bob Hall and here's a message from all the keynote club staff and the manager. Would you please drink up and go home and we'll leave you with Huey Piano Smith and Happy New Year. All the time all through the ages I've been New Year and ladies and ladies training pages I've been New Year. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year. With the floor and bell for rain, Happy New Year. 12 o'clock everybody's singing Happy New Year. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year. Make more twists than my conclusion. Happy New Year, Happy New Year. New Year's resolution, Happy New Year. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year. With the floor and bell for rain, Happy New Year. 12 o'clock everybody's singing Happy New Year. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year. Make more twists than my conclusion. Happy New Year, That's my New Year's resolution.
Happy New Year. Should old acquaintance be forgotten? Never brought to mind. We'll drink a cup of mines yet for old anxieties. Should old acquaintance be forgotten? Never brought to mind. We'll drink a cup of mines yet for old anxieties. Should old acquaintance be forgotten? Never brought to mind. We'll drink a cup of mines yet for old anxieties. Should old acquaintance be forgotten?
Never brought to mind. We'll drink a cup of mines yet for old anxieties. It's over. We've never meet again. It's over. We've never meet again. It's over. By some strangers' worlds we're friends. I don't need you to tell me. I'm wasting my time.
