On March 20th, British journalist Steve Sweeney says Israel targeted him in an airstrike while he reported from southern Lebanon. He and his cameraman Ali Rita suffered minor injuries when a missile hit just meters behind them near a military base. Sweeney needed hospital care to remove shrapnel from his arm. The strike happened hours after Israel warned of attacks on bridges over the Latani river to stop Hezbollah activity. Officials say that gave people time to leave the area and aimed to limit harm to civilians. Sweeney called the hit deliberate and accused Israel of war crimes against journalists. The Russian embassy in Lebanon condemned attacks on media workers and demanded an investigation. Israel has hit several bridges along the river this week, with 14 percent of Lebanese land under evacuation orders. More than one million people have fled their homes since fighting started on March 2nd. The Israeli military insists in never targets journalists on purpose. Groups tracking press safety, report 129 media workers, killed worldwide in 2025, many
in this conflict.
