His leo statement was on the 26th of August. On that same day, a Jesuit, because it's always Jesuits, isn't it? Always Jesuits. A Jesuit published a radical article for the Religion News Service. The author was Pastor Tommy Reese S.J., former editor of American magazine who was removed

from that post by Pope Benedict XVI. You should realize how big of a deal that is to have the editor-in-chief of a Jesuit periodical removed from that by the Pope half a world away. It's a big deal. The same day Leo said that, Pastor Reese of the Jesuit Church just happened to put up an article with the title, why I hate the old Latin Mass a confession. The old Latin Mass is like a zombie. We thought it was dead, but it keeps coming back. Yeah, incentives of impiety keep coming back, don't they? If a priest published an article today, and it was not a member of a set of a conscious group, or was not an independent priest or a society of Saint Pius X priest or something like that, if he was a, let's say, a diocesan priest who published an article in a major

Catholic outlet, or a major Christian outlet, under the title of why I hate the novice sort of Miss a confession. How long would it take before his bishop took his faculties away at least temporarily? Not if when it would happen, how long would it take? Because we already know he would lose his faculties. But you have here, Pastor Tommy, saying this stuff publicly about the mass of the form to the Saints of the West, Apostolic Times in 1962. And then he starts it up by almost mocking confession, opening as if he's making a confession. It's grotesque about how he even writes this, but he's publicly admitting to hating the traditional mass. Hillary White, who runs a sub-stack on the traditional Catholic art and traditional western

art worth your time, if you are on sub-stack and you enjoy reading such things, says this liturgy is theology embodied. If a man commits, he hates the old form of the liturgy. He is saying outright that he hates the religion it manifested. He straight up admitting the Pauline right, the Novusorto embodies a different new anti-Catholic religion. It's a hot take. Many of us say, though, as an unpopper as it is to say, the Vatican II ushered in a new religion, whether that was the intention of John the 23rd and then later Paul the 6th or not, is kind of immaterial. You cannot recognize what's happening now as being the same religion fundamentally as what was offered by the church, organically throughout history, until 1962. You can't. They teach fundamentally different things on core issues. So I bought a conum, summarizes the article here because this was a firestorm of a controversy,

and they do so in a way that doesn't mock the sacrament of penance. So we're going to use their article instead of Father Reese's. Jesuit priest Father Thomas Reese SJ has written a column entitled Why I Hate the Latin Mass. The column takes the form of the priest can pretending to go to confession. He begins by telling the imaginary confessor, it has been a week since my last column, I mean my last confession. Since that time, I have expressed hatred toward the old Latin Mass. In the following paragraphs, the priest lays out the reasons why he hates the traditional Latin Mass. Referring to it as a zombie because we thought it was dead but it keeps coming back. He explains that he does not hate the people who attend them, traditional mass, and states that quote with better catechesis, I think they would appreciate the due liturgy. That is him just paraphrasing the documents in the orbit of traditionalist custodus. The documents that form essentially the backbone of traditionalist custodus, which is explicitly about the perp, tells bishops and priests to better catechise Catholics attached

to the traditional mass, to bring them into the glory of the Novosordo. It says that here, Reese is just repeating it. The priest explains that he grew up loving the TLM and that his first years as a Jesuit novice were spent experiencing the traditional liturgy. He further explains that under obedience, he willingly embraced the new mass in 1969. He says this kind of obedience should be noted by quote so-called conservatives and wonders why if they are traditionalists, they are not quote obedient to the council and the popes who have promoted the liturgy in the vernacular. Oh, there is a simple response to that. You know what the simple response is? There is nothing traditional about blind obedience to radicalism. The Pope and the bishops and priests of the church have the same duty to preserve what was handed to them and to pass it on, not to change things willy nilly. Yes, organic development of things happens over the course of history.

That is easy enough to say, easy enough to demonstrate, including with the liturgy you can find liturgical scholars who have written about what the traditional Latin mass looked like in the sixth century and how it looked fundamentally different than what the council of Trent made the normative mass in the West. That is fine. Organic development does happen. But you can't inorganically develop something and then claim it is an organic development in line with tradition. They developed a mass at a committee. One of the Eucharistic prayers was written on a napkin in a cafe hurriedly to get something in a deadline. That is not organic. The only thing that happened in that cafe was the coffee they were drinking while they did that. There was nothing organic about that development that was liturgy by committee. I am not saying it is not valid. Defending the new mass could be done but you cannot do it by first saying it is valid. That is not a good starting point. But it can be defended. And I am not saying it is not a valid liturgy.

The Eucharist is confected there. This is why I will never be a set of a contest. I know for a fact that you get the Eucharist at the new mass. But if you are going to defend it, do so with some higher level reasoning than it is valid. The priest explains that he quickly began to love the new liturgy and enjoyed the greater variety of readings found in it. He says that he was sick of hearing the parable of the wise and foolish virgins because there were a lot of virgins saints in the liturgical calendar. So he is implying with the Tlm attacked the virgins saints. And that he enjoyed the new Eucharistic prayers. He further explains that he embraced the changes because our tradition is to change. No, it is not. He also states that the new mass helped him to understand the roots of the Eucharistic prayer and the Jewish path over meal. And that in the Eucharist we pray with Jesus, not to him. The priest also confesses to being jealous of the Tlm promoters. When we describe as being so well organized and few in numbers, he states that this alleged minority still receives a huge amount of attention from the bishops in the media.

All those who went further reformed the liturgy are ignored. We can't get anyone's attention he writes. The priest says he would like to see a better English translation of the mass and particularly mentions a translation completed in 1998 by the International Commission on English in the Liturgy, which he states was rejected by Cardinal Joseph Rattsinger. He accused Rattsinger of the future Pope Benedict XVI and one of the most prominent liturgical scholars of the 20th century of telling English speakers how to pray in their own language. What do you think he did that? Could it possibly be that that translation was erroneous? Could it possibly be that that was taking already a modernist liturgical development and just ramping the modernism up to 11? Could that be the reason that Rattsinger said no? Again, it's always Jesuits, always. He also states that he would like to see better connections between the liturgy of the word and the liturgy of the Eucharist. He suggests this could be achieved by having a unique preface for each Sunday in the

three-year cycle, though to pick up on the themes and vocabulary of the readings. His final suggestion is that the Eucharistic prayer should be more biblically themed. He proposes a Eucharistic prayer based on each gospel that could be used when the gospel is read. He adds also, we could use Eucharistic prayers based on the Pauline letters. For other reasons, the American Jesuit priest and journalist, he is the former editor-in-chief of America, the Jesuit Monthly, and has also been a columnist for the National Catholic Reporter. He's now a senior analyst for Religion News Service, a news agency that focuses on religious affairs, but not specifically on the Catholic Church for which he wrote the column. He is appointed to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom by then-president, Barack Obama, of course he was, in May 2014. Reappointed for a further two-year term in May 2016 and served as the commission's chair from June 2016 to May 2017. It's not the first time Father Reese is written against the TLM for the news agency. In April 2021, peace, that was two months, by the way, three months before traditional

census, which was issued on the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 2021. In that of the future of Catholic literature, the Rook will perform the priest's wrote, the Church needs to be clear that it wants the unreformed liturgy to disappear. The article is striking because of predate tradition of the census, but Francis is July 2021, Mood of Propryo. I'm just saying, a priest of the stature of Father Thomas Reese in the Jesuit order would almost certainly have connections in the deacastry for the liturgy, especially since the Roman Curia is dominated by Jesuits. It is not exactly a stretch of the imagination to say he has those connections to know that things were coming down the turnthike, including traditional census months before it happened. So he just happens to publish that article the same day, Olio basically dumped a bunch of water on all the, oh, don't worry, Leo is truly super based and is going to give

us back our TLM's crowd. Take it at face value when they tell you what they're doing. Father Reese can say that bizzara world stuff about the TLM all day, every day, and he will never be called aschismatic by anyone with authority to do something about it. He is in good standing. He can just tell you that the Catholic liturgy, just like the Protestant he is, he can tell you that the Catholic liturgy is a, a, a, a inducement to impiety. Earning an automatic expunication according to the Council of Trent and nothing will be done about it. Pay attention to men like father Reese when they start talking about the liturgy, brace for impact because something is coming from Rome. Let's hope it was just the last session of Leo's Catechesis on Vatican II's document on

the liturgy where he just repeated tired 1970s talking points that have been long since been debunked. And let's hope it's not something worse because there have been continuous whispers from bishops that the French bishops are going to demand that the FSSP and all the rest accept a new version of the traditional mass that makes it newly indistinguishable from the T from the Novosaro. They've been saying this for months. Let me know what you thought of all that in the comments, please. And remember to pray for anybody that we may have spoken about negatively today. I'm trying to make angry at people in the church with who have authority and positions of power or great influence. Problem is people do a good enough job of that on their own. But so please pray for them. It is the greatest act of charity you can do to pray for someone, especially someone you don't like is a great act of charity and humility. And please pray for the church. And if you've thought about supporting the work we do at Return to Tradition, options in the description box below.
