2:00Take the win and move on, but lots of good to talk about in this game. Some not so good as well, but let's start with the good because it was a win. And you know, when he doesn't have his secondary stuff, his fastball for me anyways, just not good enough to get him to outings in Louis Varlin, right? I mean, he's just basically doing it all year coming in and kind of being bang boom with the three pitches, the two knuckle curves and the 99 up, that plays, that big strike out with the bases loaded, the ending and a third coming in, doing it and the 10th ending too with that Ghost Runner, it's not the easiest thing, but for me, it's got to be Louis Varlin. Yeah, I listen boy, he's been, he's been, he's been lights out all year.

3:03That this bullpen again today now, you know, yes, Jeff Hoffman gave it up, but you, you look at Mason, Flewhardt, he's work as well. Some, some really good relief, really good relief work tonight. And look, they, they did get, I mean, they got, they got big offense. You talked about Miles Stra, Vlad, I thought looked pretty good. He's who Sanchez had a, Sanchez had a couple, it's Davis Schneider with a big hit. Andres Jimenez, again, with a, with a big hit and, you know, even Casimo Okamoto comes through with, with an RBI, we'll talk about his defense a little later. I'm sure, I'm sure some folks will want to call in about that because, well, the Brewers did find a lot of joy sending the ball into left field. I mean, I'm trying to be polite, but, you know, they, they won, they won, but, okay, come on. I say nice things. It's great that you can position a guy. That's great. That's wonderful. You can position a guy, but once the balls in play,

4:05you know, there's nothing the coaching staff can do about it. I'm just saying, I, I defy you to tell me that there weren't two of those plays that Ernie Comet doesn't make it third base. And maybe we don't need all of that. I don't know what you want me to say 16 games into the season. I mean, again, you've jumped ship already. Well, you were the one that wanted, you were the one that wanted to nuke the lineup today. You, you've been, you wanted to do one guy, one guy, you one guy, you've been, you've been jumping ships, ships, since like game 10. I have been okay. Whatever I just said, you know what I'm saying. Yeah. So I do know what you're saying. Probably don't repeat that though, you know, after that game, I can't even talk. Yeah, look, it's, he's flatfooted, you know, if you go, if you go back and watch before the balls actually thrown and when it's crossing the play, he's flatfooted. You know, every, every good defender has a little hop to get him in motion, right? You know, sort of just getting headed towards where the ball is going to end up. Most of the time, that'll get you playing the ball instead of the ball playing you,

5:06which those plays, the jet player hates to see whenever the balls hit to him. And you know, it's ricochet off him and dudes around and can't make a play. Just get him in motion a little bit sooner. He'll get to the play a little quicker. He can play most of those balls in front of him. I mean, I don't, it's no surprise. It's not a good defender. They didn't bring him here for that, Jeff. They brought him here to squish the bug, hit homeers. You kept telling me that they're better team, you kept telling me they're a better team when he's at third base. That's what I was telling all along. That's what I was told. I, I, uh, yeah, I'm not going to jump ship, but I, you already did it. It's still like, yeah, four one six eight seven zero zero five 90 star five ninety one triple eight triple six zero five 90 believe it or not. If you just tuned in, it is a winning edition of Blue Jays. Talk nine to seven. 6:08Let's talk about the Jays lineup tonight. Kevin, I mean, you were, you, you were suggesting I'm not throwing you under the bus here. You were suggesting on Blair and Barker that perhaps John Schneider might want to make a move. Might want to move Laddy up into the number two spot drop, uh, shouldn't say drop, move Dalton Varsley's not being the mode of move Dalton Varsley down into the, into the third spot in the lineup. Um, but, you know, they did, they did, they did piece it together tonight. You know, it's odd despite the fact what their first step back with runner, the runner in scoring position, uh, came in the, in the eighth inning with, uh, when Laddy came after the plate and rolled over and drove in a run. But I mean, that was their first step back with runner in scoring position. But after that, they got some pretty good, got some pretty clutch hits. Yeah, I'll leave it to you to make it sound like that I was blowing up the lineup and, and, you know, moving Dalton Varsley to the eight hole. I mean, yeah, just leave it to you to bring that to light. Instead of saying, you know, guys are hot, maximize what they're doing. You know, because they're 26th and run scored coming into the day, right?

7:10You wanted to sort of spark them and, and just make everybody, you know, maximizing that, believe it to you. Yeah, that a good day. I mean, you know, they had the beginning, you know, I know you, I know a bunch of fans the way the offense has been looking, you know, when Bauer hit the three run homer, you know, you could look around and think to yourself, man, it's game probably over. I mean, let's be fair about it. And then the ninth inning rolls around and they started competing and, you know, E-Loy with the biggest, big walk, David Schneider, you know, getting a good heater, middle, not missing it, not over swinging, you know, big daddy hack. You don't have to do that all the time. Dude's got all kinds of power. Just beat the guy to the spot. He did that locomotive with the big RBI single right on the good curveball. That things down, catch it out front, stay through it. I mean, sometimes it's, you know, where you hit it now, not how hard you hit it. Him and this, hey, all of a sudden, you notice got to strike a pro. Strike separate and, right? I mean, all of a sudden now he's got a plan for a little bit of everybody, which is kind of cool. Looks to me like he's turned the corner. He's going to have a really good year and then Ernie with the add on RBI single.

8:13And then we just talked about the 10th inning. Yeah. I mean, guys, you know, John likes to say we got out that we got out team to the other team. They exactly did that. They picked their buddy up. You know, they've got a bad ninth inning. They picked their buddy up and then Louis Varlin came in and shut the door. That's what good teams do. You know, they might call. I would, I would think you got to get used to seeing kind of these ugly kind of wins. It's just going to be the, this is going to be the way it is going forward until they get some dudes back. But this is a good win for them. They did what they had to do on the road. As I said, as I said, you know, at the end of the year, we're not going to look back at this and try it and try to, and try to dissect it by any, by any stretch of the imagination. You just take the win in this particular instance. What'd you make of Kevin Gossman tonight? And you know, look back now for the fourth inning when he gave up three runs. Yeah, he gave up three runs to Jake Bowers and Jake Bowers home run. But my goodness, still got a man in base. And even though it's a seven, eight, nine hitters coming up, he did get out of that

9:15inning and kind of stopped the bleeding. And when he looked back on it now, you know, that might have been, he, I mean, he had the very quick inning in the second inning. But the pitches he made in the fourth inning, I really kept the game in control. And probably, and frankly, brought him probably brought him in extra 15 pitches. Yeah, I think your point is as well made just by it could have got, it could have been a lot worse. Like he could have, you know, he didn't have his real good stuff. I think for, you know, most really good pitchers need good tempo. Tonight just didn't seem like he was, he had enough tempo, right? He does all that stuff before he releases the ball for a reason. Like that, you know, it's not for show. It's for tempo, you know, just seems to me like there was something off with that. And when it's off, you know, the release points, not where it should be. And the ball doesn't stay in the lanes as long as they should stay in the lane. So, yeah, I mean, it's just a little off. Would you like to see him go seven? Absolutely. He didn't, but again, it gets back to that. You know, when you're going through it and you're grinding it out and just kind of, you know, you're, you're doing everything you could possibly do to get your team

10:18a chance to win a game. Kevin did that. Like, you know, after the first, the first inning you can tell, Jeff, he just didn't have it. Like, you know, he's going, it's going to be a grind. Non-competitive split fingers, fast balls, little ratic velocity, you know, just wasn't catching it out front. You could tell he wasn't snapping it off his fingers. For me, it gets back to that tempo thing. But what good pitchers do? They give themselves a chance, get a little deep, give their team a chance. He did it. Carlos and Richmond Hill, you're on Blue Jay's talk. Hey guys, I'm going to go on a little bit of a rant. Go ahead. Every, every closer blows games. I watch a lot of baseball. There's a blue pin of bomb. There's, you know, infield hits. It's the way Hoffman is blowing games. We've got one of the best bullpen in the league. He's probably the fourth or fifth best option out of the bullpen. Like why are we get Louis, Arlin looks unbelievable. Ten shadowed innings, his balls moving all over the place. It's the way Hoffman is blowing games. It's going ball three in game seven last year to Rojas.

11:21He comes in after that ninth inning. We had six of the seven first pitches or balls. It's the way he is blowing games. He inspires zero confidence. Why is Schneider? It's a long season. Why is Arlin not getting a shot to close? Kevin, I'll turn it over to you about that one. I mean, you know, let, you know, and all fairness, Jeff Hoffman's actually been pretty good this year. Yeah. I mean, this is really the first outing where the secondary stuff just wasn't there. I mean, you know, it didn't take long for a caller to notice that, you know, you aimed the slider like you did in the ninth inning to Rojas. Like, you know, it's that kind of thing where it's that are getting it out front trusting that you're going to have good tunneling and late break to the slider. Instead, you don't want to walk a guy so you aim it and you give up a hard hit baseball. So yeah, you know, I don't know about the close in part of it. You know, you'd like to use Louis when you like to use Louis. Like, you know, you can lose games in the six and seven thinning as well as you can lose them in the ninth inning. If you don't use Jeff in the ninth inning, I don't really know where you'd use him right

12:21now. Right. You got a couple of dudes down there that are your hybrids, you know, Tyler Rogers does things. He can get left. He's out and get right. He's out. Louis Varlin, which a caller made a really good point is doing some things, adding the other couple of pitches, getting more swing on his, on his fastball, hasn't given up a hit off his fastball. Phone 65 of them this year is pretty good. That thing's been pretty good. I just don't know right now this, this part of the season up until tonight, Jeff's been good other than that first in fact, he gave up the home or yeah, I'm going to be really good. So I mean, the bull, the bullpen has been working this year. It's, it's worked. It's not an issue with this team. So, you know, I don't think if you're John Schneider, you're going to look at tonight and, and change things dramatically. I mean, obviously you will tomorrow. You, I don't think you'll have Jeff Hoffman available tomorrow. But the bullpen has been, I, I would suggest the strength of this team so far. This year and, and, you know, there's a reason Louis Vierland's having success in that role. I'm not saying that I wouldn't at some point. I thought it was interesting today when, you know, Pete Walker, we had him on mentioned

13:24Vierland head starter stuff and we know that there was talk when the J's got him that they were looking at converting him into a starter. Of course, that was when they had 14 healthy starters. And, and you know, that's, that's not the case now and I'm not, not suggesting you convert him to starter. But is there a world where Louis Vierland gets the ninth inning? Yeah, I think so. I'm sure. But I just don't think it, I don't think it's plan A right now. For, for me, if they're going to make a deep run in the playoffs to close, there's not here yet. I just may, yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm with you completely, Dave and Calgary, you're on Blue J's talk. Hey, guys, good to chat with you as always. 14:25Do you remember Billy Koch Jeff back in the day? I find that Jeff, sometimes with that fastball as much as the Velo is up, it doesn't have a lot of late life like Louis. And the thing that drives me crazy watching him, how many clean sheets or how many clean innings has Jeff had this year? What drives me bananas back to your other caller when he comes in is we either walk the lead off guy, we give up a single, when you're in a one run ball game and you've lost four or five of the last series that you've played in, you absolutely need to get this game tonight. You don't care if it's April or not, it is so frustrating to watch Jeff come in and pitch from behind, drives me crazy. And you know what? I don't understand the selection at times. I don't understand when he gets beat, sometimes soft and not with his best stuff.

15:27And you know what? I find him in looking into the dugout a lot in the night. I'm not sure if you guys have any insight, if Tyler was looking in their call and pitches for Jeff from the dugout and if they are, that tells me they don't have confidence in Jeff either. So I mean, you know, when you talk about where you can use Jeff, I get Jeff some confidence and I have him show me and show the rest of the guys on the roster and the fans that he can pitch ahead and have a clean innings. There aren't many clean innings from Jeff Hoffman and when you're in a one run ball game, it's a good thing that it was he had two runs to work with the night and he still gave them up. It is just driving me crazy to watch that guy pitch. I just go to be born with you. I don't think even though the field is up, I don't think the stuff is good enough for me. And Kev, you used to say that a lot. You know, we can say, hey, we don't have the blosier here yet and you're probably right. But man, oh man, you guys were so I find your soft on him tonight. I'd be all over Jeff tonight. You come in with a two run lead.

16:29You have to lock that down, zero base runners and get out of there and get a win for your club. And you know what? He drove me bananas to watch him pitch tonight, not competitive at all to me. So you know what? So for the rent, I appreciate you having me on and again, Kev, thanks for coming on on Thursday. I look forward to hearing what you have to say. Awesome. Kevin, there you go. Yeah. Look, I think when you're six and nine and your offense is 26th and baseball and run scored and it looked the way it looked tonight, they had some fight in them. Right. Their bats look better. Look, I think we're on the, we're on the same page when it comes to Jeff Hoffman.

17:30Do I want Jeff Hoffman closing for me in the World Series? No. You know, is there a world where this team makes a move at the trade deadline if they're in it to get a closer? Yeah. Yeah. Hopefully there's, there's one available, although given the way the league has started out, just about everybody in the national league is in the playoffs right now. So there may not be, you know, there may not be that guy out there this year. But yeah, to get back to Jeff Hoffman right now, again, he's, he's been better this year. And I, they're not, the record isn't what it is because of the bullpen, and it's not what it is because of Jeff Hoffman. I think in some ways, he's, in some ways, he's been a benign influence, which, you know, if you're not going to have a guy, it's going to come out and be lights out. At least he's, he's generally not screwing things up the way he did tonight. But your captain's right, he didn't have a secondary stuff tonight. And you can see it right right from the get go. I saw Heinemann looking in the dugout, I don't know what that was about. Um, you know, I, I only, I saw it once and I wondered if Heinemann was trying to remember

18:39whether or not they had a challenge left because it was an leverage pitch. And I saw him looking in the dugout, and that's something we, you know, something we didn't talk on. But somebody's, I, Andre Semen has had a terrific game, but man, oh, man, you can't, you can't burn a, you can't burn your challenge in the third inning with nobody on. I know. It's just, you know, and I'm sure John, I'm sure John will, we'll have a conversation with the players about that four, one, six, eight, seven, zero, nine, five, yeah, there will be Lenin Sosa, first rainbow, one of the first rainbows we've farted this year. Lenin Sosa going to third base. I'm with you. You know what? I didn't mind it that much. Dude's trying to make it. I didn't. I didn't. I didn't either. Again, it gets back to that right. I mean, if not now, when, you know, middle of the season, when everybody's rocking and rolling and you got to pass the baton and, you know, glad he's hitting balls to the moon, then maybe not. But, you know, it's not the case right now. Sometimes pushing the envelope. So, hey, like, I know that was my first reaction.

19:42That's all that matters. But man, I just like, you know, every once in a while, you know, nobody's perfect. You know, he got, he got a good jump. It looked like it was a little, a little lollipop fly ball to, you know, in between the right filter and the center filter. You know, I, I would think if that's the perfect time to go, like you want to put a little pressure on it, maybe got those ball away. You could steal a cheap run that way, I don't, you know, he's on a new team. He's trying to press. Good for him. I'd have done the same thing. Yeah. No, that was my, my first reaction. Now, if he'd been out, I would have come on here and buried him. But I mean, he wasn't. It worked. Sort of. It was close. Yeah. I wouldn't have buried him. Yeah. You wouldn't, because you're soft. Maybe get something clarified tomorrow. Good news on the injury front or at least from the Blue Jays point of view, as Dan Schillman said, this kind of qualifies as good news. It appears as well. So I'm just curious if you guys think this guy deserves more playing time because I feel like he's been fantastic as of late, prolonging at bats, taking walks and obviously that huge hit tonight. And second question is what are they going to do when Springer comes back? I mean, I don't think they can send him and then he's down. He's been good for the short time. He's been up here. And obviously Davis isn't going to be going down either. So

And as one of those people who thought he wasn't going to make this team this year because of because of the spring train, whatever John Schneider's doing with Davis Schneider is working. Now I will say this and you know where I'm going with this. It has to at least be a discussion to have her any third base in Davis Schneider at second base in Okamoto DH. It has to be or at least late in the game. You cannot get away with that defensive third base. As long as we're going to be the J's are going to be life and death to win games. I don't think you can get away with that at third base. But other than that, Davis Schneider is a product of this organization and whatever they've done with him has been working. I don't know how you feel. Okay, I love him coming off the bench. Absolutely. Love him. I'm

26:52to the point where I have a lot of confidence in him coming off the bench right now. Yeah, him and Miles Straw are the two guys right that just seem like they they you know, have key at that so they can get a good pitch to hit when they do get it coming off the bench, which is almost impossible like there's a real hard thing to do. Like to yourself and yeah, it's very hard. And they're very good at it. So, you know, playing more, you know, I think you hit the nail on the head when it comes to John's pretty in tune with, you know, they're big on the bat path and you know, whatever they're trying to get out of that guy that's starting against him, whether they need slug, whether they need on base percentage, those kind of things and sort of how he feels in the blank and maybe after that guy that goes out, you know, Jacob throws really, really hard up until tonight, Davis is having a little bit of trouble with high velocity. I think that's probably why he didn't start tonight, but going forward. Yeah, he keeps doing this. He'll force John's hand enough that, you know, and John has shown us that, you know, he'll run him out there

27:55a couple of days in a row. He's doing some things. Absolutely balls. Oh, at this point, he'll do some things. He's missing the third of his lineup. If you're hitting, you'll play. Yeah. Uh, and if that is, I, I mean, I don't know what you do. You've got Lenin Sosa. Uh, you've got Eloy Jimenez. I, for me, I think you probably send him an S down. I don't know if Sosa has options or not. I don't think I think I read some plays that he does not have options. Uh, so for me, it would probably be, you know, unless he goes off and hits like seven home runs, it would probably be him and is that would go down. Uh, and you would have things sort of look the way they look coming out of, uh, coming out of spring training. Tommy, Tommy and Edmond, I think the way I come out. Oh, sorry. No, I'm just gonna say I'm just reading a text from Tommy and Edmonton because he agrees with me. Oh, go ahead. I know people are going to pile on Hoffman and I'm not trying to defend this out

28:58because it wasn't great, but I do think Oklahoma should have been able to get him out at least one of those hits to the left side. Tommy and Edmonton on the same wavelength. Yeah, I'm not designed. Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with you, but for you guys just to say stop, well, you've said it many times. Just stop playing him on the defensive side. That's insane.
