Jays Drop Finale vs. Brewers, Lose Fifth Straight Series

Blue Jays Talk

About this episode

Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker break down the Blue Jays' 2-1 loss vs. the Brewers to lose the series, their fifth straight series loss. They take your calls and texts, and get right to the bats staying quiet for a second straight game. Was this Brandon Sproat looking good, or does this fall solely on the Jays offence? Should Vladimir Guerrero Jr. shoulder some more blame for not having as much power as expected so far amidst a variety of injuries? Plus, they get into the outing for Patrick Corbin, chat the bullpen's usage, and debate the brief dustup with Trevor Megill.

My name's Mackenzie and I started to go fund me for the adoptive mother of a nonverbal autistic child. The mother had lost her job because she wasn't able to find adequate care for this autistic child. So she really needed some help with living expenses, paying some back bills. So I launched a GoFundMe to help support them during this crisis. And we raised about $10,000 within just a couple of months. I think that the surprising thing was by telling a clear story and just like really being very clear about what we needed, we had some really generous donations from people who were really moved by the situation that this family was struggling with. Well, I don't know, Kevin Barker. I think maybe we should just replay last night's Blue Jace dog. That would probably be the easiest thing to do. 2-1, the Blue Jace. Losing to the Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon. The numbers call is always 416-870-0590. Star 590-1, triple-8, triple-6, 0590-59590 is the text line. All right, Kevin Barker. Nickel and Dymed again by the Milwaukee Brewers. But the story of this game, again, the Jace lack of offense. Top 4 today, 2 for 17. Well, 5 strikeouts, a walk.

Flatty, I mean, we can't put it any other way. Killed the 6th inning with a double play. The Jace also had a chance in the 3rd inning when he scored their only run. But Davis Schneider getting the start in the lead-off spot and Dalton Varshal not being able to come through against Brandon Sprout. And before you say anything, speaking of Brandon Sprout, I think I'm on safe. Sprout. Sprout, what did I say, Sprout? Sprout. So you, we were talking about that, but now you got me thinking. The player of the game is brought to you by Capital One. Capital One giving credit to over 4 million Canadians and counting. Kevin, the player of the game. Yeah, I think you just mentioned his name, Brandon Sprout. The 6th and 2th, there's the 4 hits, the earning, the 6Ks. You had a really good sweeper to the righties. That sort of combination of the power sinker, excuse me, the cutter, which he could elevate.

He could throw into a lefty. When you're doing it to both sides of the plate with power, and then you can throw the sweeper tunneling off of that and occasionally a little curve with the breaking stuff. I mean, that's basically how you do it right. That's how you get player of the game. That's how you grind it out and get 6 and 2-3. Give your team a chance to have the big butt ending that the Brewers had to get the win. So for me, it's got to be Brandon. Yeah, I don't think there's any doubt about that. I mean, Patrick Corbin got the start. Tell you what, gave them a lot more than I thought, Patrick Corbin was going to give them today. But at the end of the day, again, Kevin, it's the offense. I mean, there's just nothing going on. And for the life of me, I don't know what John Schneider does here. Until George Springer, it's back. I don't think there's anything they can do. OK, let's talk some confidence, right? The Patrick Corbin thing, the sliders down were good.

The cutter on the edges was much better. I mean, that was sort of his bugaboo and his first start was leaving the cutter too much in the middle of a plate. You know, the velocity had went up a little bit with the cutter, which is a big deal. The late movement on the sinker was pretty good. You know, it was arm side was good first time through, second time through, the sinker and the, you know, he threw enough to both sides of the plate to get people out to give him a chance, which is a big deal. So, you know, I think that's kind of, you know, worries that with just when he goes out there on an every five day basis is to give him a chance. And that's kind of what he did. The change of speeds was good too. The extra little gear in the heater was good, because you could see sort of cutter in at 87. The change up at 79 and the elevated fast bolt 92. So, you had a little to give everybody, which is kind of a good thing. And it was on the edges, which was a big deal. Got him in swing mode, got some quick outs, got a little deeper than I think most people thought he could.

416-870-0590, star 590, when triple A, triple 6, 0590. The number to call 590, 590 on the text line. We will get to John Schneider and some of the post game commentary in a few minutes, but again, this is your show. And it's your chance to have your say. The Jays will be in Arizona tomorrow night to start a three game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Mike Soroke on the Mount for the Blue Jays. And I'm going to apologize in advance because I've got some sort of audio issue here with my headphones. They're going to be interesting. If I'm repeating myself more than usual, well, it's not a bad joke. Grind it out like a Blue Jays hit bat, Jeff. You could do it. Grind it out. Yeah, grind it out. Grind it out like Okamoto.

Hey, be nice. Q from Winnipeg. On a day where the offense is struggling to string hits together, what did you guys think about using Nancy and Matt apply in the seventh inning? And the reason I'm reading that, Kevin, is that I think we need to talk a little bit about the bull pen right now going into the game today. Brandon Fisher, who wasn't available here. I mean, no Brandon Fisher, Tyler Rogers, and Mason Flewhardy, not available for the Blue Jays. So by process of elimination, you kind of have to go to those two guys. I think we saw the way John used Louis Varland today, basically using him in the against the meat of the order. That may be what we see going forward until the Jays figure out what's going on. Well, I was going to say what's going on with Jeff Hoffman.

Let's be clear. It's the way it might go until Jimmy Garcia is back. Yeah, I think that's fair. I think that's a good way to look at it. I was very intrigued, and I'd been having conversations with you, basically, all day about, I can't wait to see if they have the lead, say, three to one in the eighth inning with the meat of the order who's getting the ball. Who would they turn it over, give the ball to in the ninth inning? That going forward would be the intriguing part of it. But Jimmy getting back will help, right? I mean, you got an older guy who could pitch the ninth inning, who's got enough stuff to get left. He's out and right, he's out, which is a big deal. Then you can use Jeff, however you'd want to use Jeff, I'm not even going to act like I'd no winner, how that would be. And then you can use a Varlin the way you want to use him, basically, the way you've been using him all year, all over the place, which is sort of the way he's taking it and run with it. So, yeah, for me, the bullpen has nothing to do with the way they lost today. I mean, offensively, just not doing anything. Like the in-game adjustments, they get out the same way all the time. Raise your hand if you didn't think Vladimir was going to go up and swing at a first pitch sweeper.

After the dude had punched him out, the first two had bats on sweepers. And you don't have to be a rocket science to know he was swinging at the first sweeper he saw. And that's exactly what happened. So, that's what I'm talking about. If you're going to do things like that, you've got to make sure it's up, you've got to make sure you're staying in the big part of the field, and you've got to have a big league at bat. And quite frankly, right now, one through nine and not doing it more consistently enough. And when you don't, it just sort of leads to these kind of things where you're getting the other team to have a chance of having kind of the eighth inning that they had last night in the eighth inning, they had the day. So, for me, this has nothing to do with the bullpen. This has everything to do with the offense. What can you do if you're John? You keep running them out there. And you hope and pray that Vladie starts running into something. Have better flats when they matter the boats. It's the sixth inning at bat, the sort of for me sums up the season for the offense ever since everybody went on the IEL that matters. It's just consistently somebody that matters that's still there. It's just not having the effect that everybody wants them to have. And if they don't turn it around,

even if they face and say the diamond backs and the angels, they're probably going to lose more games than they win. Just in a Vancouver, you're on Blue Jace. Talk. Hey guys, new day, same results. I was on last night's Blue Jace talking. I'm going to repeat some of the same points I made last night. This was another very winnable game. And he had their number five starter, Brandon Prope, who was struggling coming in. And he gives you six and two thirds andnings on 75 pitches. And it was on a day where they had your rebate down. I admit that if it depleted Bulletin, you had this Zerpa guy who's been struggling, give up three runs and three straight appearances. Or sorry, he runs in three straight appearances. And he was your closer. And man, if you can, again, this team last year, they were 13th in walks. From this year, they're 25th in the league in walks and just cannot seem to grind out game is when they're struggling. So it's just an incredibly frustrating watch.

Not sure why Okamoto's batting sixth. It shouldn't be anywhere within eighth right now, especially when you've earned either. Yeah, I don't get it. The one positive I'll say is I think Heinemann in the great game. And overall, I feel a lot more confident in the end of the plate than Brandon. And yeah, I think we give him a little more run there. Well, I'll clear these out. All right, guys, that's it for me to hang in there. Thanks. Appreciate the call. I mean, yeah, Heinemann did have a good game. He did. I even like the bunch, Jeff. I gotta be honest with you. Yeah, I did. I did do it. He had had forward bats in the last eight days. You're facing a guy you really don't know anything about. You know, you're having trouble scoring runs. You want to take a little pressure off a starting pitcher who's pushing 37, who's coming off a bad start. You really don't know what you're gonna get from him. Be a little easier pound the zone. If you're ahead in the game, it's just little things like that, right? That sort of kind of get your momentum headed in the right direction. I'm with the caller, I kind of like that. And, you know, the lineup, again, it's until guys just consistently start buying into,

what do you do well? You know, that's what you do. And how are they trying to get you out? Don't let them do it over and over and over again. If you do, it's gonna, that snowball, talk about that all the time, because I lived it. The more you let the snowball go faster down that hill, the worse chance you got to stop in it. And some guys are going through it early like that, right? Where it's just, it looks like Groundhog Day. How do you stop the bleeding when it comes to that Groundhog Day part of it? And hopefully people like Okomodo kind of turn it around and start hammered baseball to right center. Every once in a while would be nice. Yeah, as we said, this really not much, I don't think there's anything John can do, frankly, with this lineup, other than what he's already done. I mean, he's had Schneider leading off. He's had Nathan Lucas leading off yesterday, trying to play, trying to try to play the lefty righty advantage, even though Lucas really hasn't had a great year. I mean, he's, I just don't know what else he can do.

The bottom of the order, on most nights has been okay. I mean, it's not, and I'm not a big fan, as I know you're not, have taken any climata of a spot where he's comfortable and moving unpired. I mean, it's not their fault that Vlad isn't hitting and nothing else is happening at the top of the order. So, listen, we're gonna take a break, try to get some of these technical issues addressed and we'll come back with more Blue Jays talk. The Blue Jays, two of one losers to the Milwaukee Brewers, it's Blue Jays talk. My name's Mackenzie and I started to go find me for the adoptive mother of a nonverbal, autistic child, the mother had lost her job because she wasn't able to find adequate care for this autistic child. So, she really needed some help with living expenses, paying some back bills. So, I launched a GoFundMe to help support them during this crisis. And we raised about $10,000 within just a couple of months.

I think that the surprising thing was by telling a clear story and just like really being very clear about what we needed, we had some really generous donations from people who were really moved by the situation that this family was struggling with. This podcast is supported by GoFundMe. All right, welcome back to Blue Jays Talk, on the SportsNet Radio Network, Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker, the Blue Jays 2-1 Losers, to the Milwaukee Brewers. It appears magically as if my technical issues have been resolved, Kevin. Nice. How about that, go buddy? Well, I mean, that's what you do in your professional. You grind it out, you make adjustments in-game, Jeff, to make yourself better in the long run. Down the line, it's Tom and show that have taken care of you.

So that's, because I honestly got, when I came on, it was like, I was hearing myself, well, I used to sound like that. I used to sound like that early Saturday morning when I was thinking, but I was hearing myself come back in my ear, right? And I'm sitting there thinking, why am I calling this dude? Why am I calling this dude Sprout? Well, it's Sprout. Anyhow, we're all taking care of. It's all good, we'll get to the phone lines, we'll do the standings update, life will continue. Life will continue, and I will, I will continue to grind it out. Troy from Stony Creek on the text line, do you think seeing the way the brewers play small ball early in the season can pay any positive dividends throughout the season for the Jays is the year progressives against division opponents? The injured and subpar lineup might be able to scratch across a key run in the future via a bunch if they are continuing to struggle with RISP. You know what square-paged round hole? This is not a small ball team. It's a team that does reliant contact, but they need their big boys to drive and runs

and to get extra bass hits if they're going to be successful. They're not going to win by having dudes button all over the place. I'm going to say yes, bottom of the lineup. Every once in a while, bottom of the lineup gets a guy over like Hanuman did today. I think that's what the Texas tried to say. The bottom of the lineup. The bottom of the lineup has been successful. They're not playing small ball. They're making good contact. I mean, him and his is not playing small ball. Climates are not playing small ball. You know, Hanuman did today, but those dudes are going up trying to do damage. I think the grind of the season is what the Texas asking. Yeah, I think there's a time and place for everything. And I think the Jays, because of what some guys are going through and there's some unknowns there still of if they can do it again the way they did it last year. John's going to ask the bottom of the lineup certain guys to do certain things at certain times, but I'm with you. You know, the big boy at first sooner or later is going to have to have more than seven stakes through 17 games, Jeff. I mean, look, or wait, 18 games. I apologize. I asked you this and I know you kind of rolled your eyes. I did. What if he's just a slow starter,

sitting over 300, Jeff? Okay. Pat Murphy told you all you need to know about what he thinks of Vladimir Gerard Jr. By throwing a lefty against him in a ninth inning up a run. Didn't seem to matter, care about that. Now, I know it was two lefties in a righty and it forced John to pinch hit a righty for one of the lefties, but still. When Lattie was leading off. Yes. No, that and Lattie did. Lattie did get a single odd win. Of course he did. But yeah, your point is, your point is well made. The other team will tell you, the other team will tell you how you're going. Just watch how they manage their, watch how they manage their bullpen. Hey, if I'm glad enough, and I'm getting on that plane and I'm thinking to myself, how dare they throw a lefty to me in the ninth inning? You know, that is okay. He's not great. It's okay. It's not a great pitcher. You know, he's not Ashby. So yeah, I mean, I don't know, man, every once in a while you gotta go home, look yourself in the mirror and go, hey, probably my team might need me. I should be having a few more better at bats,

when those at bats matter the most. Like the sixth inning. I'm sure he's, but Kevin don't, he's aware of that. I mean, it's not, he's not a rookie. Yeah, I, listen, he understands my concern with Lattie, isn't that, you know, he, he, he doesn't understand the situation or doesn't understand the urgency. That, that's, I'm, I'm not concerned about that. I'm just trying to figure out where the power went. Well, you know, I was always taught, Cecil Cooper, you used to always tell me, it's not about your mechanics. It's always most of the time when you become an established big leader, it's about what you swing at. You get better pitches to hit because you have more talent than most do. Ball will end up most of the time where you want it to. You go up and swing at an OO sweep or down away most of the time, you're not going to have success on that. Yeah, that is true. Guy and Toronto, you're on Blue Jace Talk. Hello, Guy. I mean, there you are. How you doing, Guy? And I'm trying to speak, guys, hope everything's okay.

Um, yeah, I think that team is just beating themselves. I mean, really, when you think about it, I mean, you know, half of the ball in a couple of games and the catchers, I think, across the three games that Herman and Noah Swelly yesterday. And just the whole lineup, I just don't like the way it's being managed by Schneider. Nobody knows when they're playing. Nobody knows where they're hitting. Nobody knows what position they're playing. It's okay to have death, but throw the same guys out three or four games in a row. Every single game, he's changing the lineup. And it's got to be difficult. I don't know if Barck can comment on that. If it's more difficult to play like that. And the other thing is, I just, I don't understand how this team consistently throws guys who are batting 100 and, you know, Okamoto batting in the middle of lineup when they're struggling and then comments batting eight. I just don't get it. But anyways, listen, I still think it's early. I still think we have a good ball club, lots of injuries.

And, you know, hang up and listen. Appreciate the call. I should mention, by the way, that at least from what Hazel and Arden and from what Dan and Joe said and I know Ben talked about it as well in the radio broadcast. It does seem, and I'm knocking on wood here. It does seem as if George Springer may be coming along a little faster than we originally thought. They're now saying that he might be able to return in time for the first game of the homestand. They got what? They got six games left in this road trip. Am I right? Six games left, seven games left. So, if that's the case, I mean, first of all, I got to tell you, that shocks the hell out of me because I figured George would be out for three to four weeks with a fractured toe. I'm not a doctor, but those things don't always heal quickly. So I'll throw that out there. That's the good news. Kevin, you can address his point. Okay, he can't get here soon enough, meaning George Springer. And I want to say this about Guy's point about guys not knowing when they play. They're Snapchat.

What does that call where you go on? Whatever it's called? Or WhatsApp or whatever. Yeah, that's it. Yeah, they give the lineup out the day before. So everybody knows they can sleep on it, they can prepare themselves for certain guys who are not every day guys. So they know what position they're playing where they're hitting a lineup. There's no surprises. John's a very good communicator. That has nothing to do with the woes or they're going through or Nathan Locus is two for 32 and his last, oh, for 20s. Like that has nothing to do with it. The Okamoto's the, you know, where the guys are hitting. I don't know where you want them. You know, Okamoto is a big part of this team. He's a big part of this lineup. He's not a middle of the order bat. But right now he kind of is being forced into sort of, you know, trying to come up and give you a quality at bat. So I just don't know, you know, when you're on the outside looking in, Jeff, what's his other options? Like, well, here's the thing. I mean, you know, I was going to, I was going to say with all due respect to Guy.

Farshall's playing every day. Guerrero's playing every day. Sanchez is playing every day. Okamoto's playing every day. Clements playing every day. Him and his is playing every day. Yeah, they're moving around a bit. But it's not like Ernie's played seven different positions. He's been second base or he's third when Okamoto's D Hingered first base. I mean, other than that, I'll tell you this. I think for team that doesn't have Springer, Barger and Kirk, I actually think John Schneider's tried to be as consistent as possible with his lineup. But I'm with you. I don't know what else he does. You know, we talked about, okay, maybe do you move Guerrero into the number two spot? That maybe. But, I mean, it worked today, Jeff, where he came up and had the biggest tip out of the game. And that's the thing. Correct, that's the point. You got your, you got your, you got your horse, the guy who's supposed to be your horse, up to the plate at the big, and the biggest part of a low scoring game.

And he didn't come through. You got, and your horse was on base in the last inning as well. So, yeah, I'm with you. And the bottom of the order is working. I mean, you cannot ask for much more from him in as, and Clement. So, yeah, I'm kind of, I don't know, I don't know where, I don't know where else John goes. I mean, he's got Lenin Sosa hitting fifth today. You know? But, and I do think, and I'm not gonna, I'm gonna try to go through the whole show with the Hammering and Okamoto because I don't really think he had much, I don't think he necessarily was a drag in the team today. And I, but I do want to talk about his first at bat for a minute. But, it's just hard, man, it's hard. You, you can't manage around these guys, you know? You, you can't manage around those injuries. Yeah, for what? I just don't know what else he can do. For whatever reason, the in-game adjustments just aren't as quick

as they were last year. I don't think that's worth showing up. I thought, because I've been hard on him. I actually thought Okamoto's first at bat. Hmm. The first time in a while, I kind of thought I saw some intent. You did? He flight out to center. You didn't. No, I looked to me like he had a, he had a couple of really, and I don't know, Dan and Joe talking about it. I thought he had two really good swings. What did he do after that? What did he do after that? Four, one, six, eight, seven, zero, zero, five, 90, star, five, 90, one, triple, eight, triple, six, zero, five, 90, five, 90, five, 90, is the text line. Let us get to the out of town scoreboard. I've been intrigued by what is happening in that Yankees game. The standings watch is presented by bet three, six, five. Home with a five run early payout. Must be 19 plus Ontario only. Please play responsibly. So let's see, let's see what the Yankees, that Yankees series, I just, I have to admit, I flipped over a little bit.

I almost, I almost wish they'd given us, like a judge trout cam for that series, because it was basically judge and trout going toe to toe, which was an inordinate amount of fun. And, you know, good news for the Blue Jays is that they'll eventually run into Mike Trump. Kevin, as I, as I pull up the scoreboard here, because I know you watched a little bit of those games. There's Mike Trump back. I don't, of the Mike trout six or seven years ago, probably not. I don't think we'll ever see that Mike trout. But boy, ever once in a while when, you know, he's squishing the bug, bug, and everything's happening in the phone booth. Yeah, Jeff, I mean, he's showing you that he's still, you know, a really, really good offensive player and can do a lot of damage. I just like, you know, and what he does in Yankees stadium, he's always been really, really good there. It's a bunch of homers, which is cool thing. It's like he's, you know, rising to the occasion, playing the big donkey that plays right field for the New York Yankees. You know, it's kind of once feeding off the other one. Oh, yeah, you did that.

Okay, I'll do that. Now I add one to it. And then the next guy comes up and hits the homer, sort of, you know, you're passing the baton when it comes to two great players going at it. It was, it is a lot of fun. It is amazing that judge gets off to a slow start and he's got eight or nine homers already. Like, yes. I, it's nuts, man. Well, in the, in the middle of the eighth inning right now, it is 11-4 for the angels. Mike trout does indeed have a homerun. So does they're in judge. Mike trout also, trout is, I love this. He's, he's one for two with three walks, three runs scored in the homerun. And again, the, the LA angels are up 11-4 on the New York Yankees, the white socks and the rays. They are nodded up to a piece later tonight. Baltimore and Cleveland go at it. And as I'm looking through the rest of my scoreboard here, bear with me. Where are the Boston Red Sox? Are Bargors Red Sox off today? They appear to be off today. They appear to be off today. So the standings, the American League East.

The Tampa Bay rays, 10 and 7, as we all predicted, they are in first place. I deserve it. The Yankees, 10 and 8, the Yankees, 10 and 8 still playing. The Orioles are 9 and 9 Toronto, 7 and 11. And they are tied with the Boston Red Sox. They're actually, yeah, they're set to play the Detroit Tigers tomorrow. So there you go, the American League East, two teams over 500 and three teams at or below 500. And there's, there is a lot of that going on in the American League in general right now. But, you know, that's only, that only works for a while. After a while, you stop looking around and saying, well, yeah, things could be worse, you know? The Yankees aren't, after a while, you have to stop doing that because you, you got to start winning games. And as I said yesterday, Kevin, I think you agreed with me. You got to start, you got to start by winning series. That's what I'm looking at right now, win series. Try to get back to 500. That's, I mean, that's, that's got to be the goal right now.

Yeah, absolutely. You know, I, I'd ran that by some coaches that are living it with the Blue Jays early in the season and they won't know part of here and what everybody else is doing. They won't know part of it. You know, I, I got some pretty nasty text back whenever I had mentioned that. So, you know, they're not trying to use that and excuse which they shouldn't, you know, they got their own problems individually to try and figure out, to try and get guys hot. And, you know, just trying to grind through it and figure out how to put the ball forward with some authority. That's what it's all about now. And, you know, it ain't about just putting the ball forward anymore. It's about doing it with some authority. And, you know, I laughed the Okamoto fly out to right, but, you know, he missed two balls that he should have hammered before he flew out to right. I mean, it's that kind of thing, right? I'm trying to, I'm trying to find a silver lining there. And, and you put, you just burst my balloon. Yeah, and then against the lefty with the runner on 30, takes the 1-0 fast ball in, which he should have been looking for the entire game. And, any rolls over the ball look like a sinker down. That was a little down, not down, down like it's just like,

you know, you can't win for losing right now if you're here. I'm so, we have a, we have a crap ton of texts and calls to get to, but before you do that, want to, want to listen to the manager, John Schneider on the state of the, on the state of the Blue Jays offense. We need to hit, we need to hit some extra bass hits. We need to slug a little bit, certain guys. And, you know, it takes a game, you know, I, you know, you look back to the first game and you score a bunch. And, you hope that carries over and you're in into two good pitchers that, you know, we're locating really well. And, you know, we score on a bunch, they score on a bunch, you know, yesterday and the eighth inning, kind of, a lot of swinging bunts, kind of a weird outcome. But, we got to just get back to, I think, everyone doing their part, whether it's contact or slug. But, seems like we're kind of missing that, missing that extra bass hit right now. Yeah, boy, are they ever, a lot of folks on the text line. Basically, saying the same thing, Ryan and Toronto, Vladie enough is enough. The whole world knows you are more talented than this. It's beyond unacceptable for our leader to be playing like this. You're on the team. This team to rise a level of play, not plateau out until quote it counts.

Vladie, they all count. Go Blue Jays. Nice. Laura from Burlington, Ontario, she loves Louis. There's a lot of Louis viral in love. I love him too. Jane Coquitland, the same game as yesterday. Brewer's small ball to win the game while we are ice cold at the plate. Make something happen beyond frustrating and on and on and on. KM and Norfolk, we were told this offense would be good because it was great last year. Let's not forget they were at Trojus at the beginning of last year. And we're also terrible in 2024 with a very similar roster. I mean, that is true. It's not like the Jays went wire to wire on route to go into the world series last year. So, we're all, look, we're all in this together here. We're all, we're all trying to find silver linings. We're all trying to find silver linings, right? We're all still alive, huh? We're all, we're all, we're all still alive. It's early. Nobody's running away with the East like they're things, you know, there are things we can look around and be thankful for. Well, you got nowhere to go, but up. Yep. That's the old saying. How about that truth?

Yeah, that's, that's, that's why I'm sticking to Darryl and Whitby. You're on Blue J, Darryl and Whitby are on Blue Jays talk. Hey, guys, how are you? Hi, buddy. It's getting to be a bit frustrating watching this right now, to be honest with you, like from last year, what we were used to watching to now. But starting to me, not to be negative, but it's starting to look like for some of these players last year was a bit of an outlier season, like they had overachieved. They were doing very well. Lucas, for one, Clement was doing phenomenal last year. And it's just not there this year. It seems like a bit of a hangover from the World Series. What do you guys think? Yeah, you know, it's fine. I mean, listen, I've spent almost, almost every interview we did in spring training with the former player or manager or coach, regardless of the team. Anybody who's been to the World Series, I asked that question. Is there such a thing as a World Series hangover?

Kevin Gossman talked about, hey, normally I start throwing around games six of the World Series. I was pitching in the World Series this year. So I think guys had to make adjustments. You know, if the injuries were a result of guys being worn down, I might say that. But you know, fracture your toe, fouling a ball off your foot, spraying both ankles. You know, and neither of those guys are in the World Baseball Classic. So it's not as if that you can point to that. Alejandro Kirk, what takes the, takes the deflection off the thumb. Yeah, I mean, those three injuries are kind of, are kind of freakish here. The caller's earlier point though. I mean, let's be clear. Until last year, Nathan Lucas and Davis Schneider were kind of looked as being bit players until, until last year, right? It's not like these guys have been destined for success from the time they set foot in the majors.

So I made the point, you know, they fired at a lot of rainbows last years. And, and the stuff they're farting right now, believe me, it ain't rainbows. Yeah, see, Davis Schneider's the same guy for me as he was last year. And he don't look any different. It takes the same hack. He doesn't swing at the pitches that he wasn't swinging at last year. Nice, Lucas, you know, he's a lefty who has a slower bat, who has a long stride. Who swings at everything? Every once in a while, all three of those things ain't going to add up to hits. Like that's kind of what he's going through, Ernie Clement. I mean, he's kind of doing the same thing he did last year. He's getting a bunch of hits, he's getting on base. You know, the one guy that you mentioned was as barter. And I think that was the little bit of the unknown is, is that dude for real? Like, is that sort of, and can he take another step forward? Now, obviously got off to a little bit of a slow start and, you know, John gave me a day, maybe a day and a half off, which was, yep, kind of odd that early in the season. So you could tell there was some things going on behind closed doors that they were trying to figure out with him. He's the one guy. Everybody else, you know, it's just looking this way because, you know,

they're missing George and Vlad, he has just been, ah, and you know what else, and you know what else they are missing to? I don't, I'm not saying it. You say it. I mean, I know he isn't exactly beating the hell out of the ball in New York, but they are missing their cleanup guy. They are, those don't grow, those don't grow on trees. That's a big deal, right? He's sort of the security blanket for Vladie. Vladie could have the fatty wanted to have like the sixth inning. You could tell Vladie was pressure a little bit to walk up there and swing it something to try and be aggressive to do some slug. Like, you could feel it. You could tell it just by what he swung at and the way he acted after he got out. So yeah, I mean, I kind of might want to, you know, not make excuses for him because, you know, we've seen him at the highest level in the playoffs. But yeah, it just sort of seems like everything that could go wrong, it's going wrong right now. And it's up to the individual. They've got nothing to do with David Popkins or who, you know, the way John makes out the line up, the dudes that matter are going to be in the line

up somewhere every day. It's up to those dudes to stop getting out the same way all the time. They all know who their names are. Figure out that part of it. Go up and let I've said this to you till I can't say it anymore. If you let them, they will throw it down the middle. But you have to let them. The more consistently they do that, the better chance they have a win and more games that going on a little bit of a run. The less they do it, the worse this thing is going to get, the further they are going to fall behind, the harder it's going to come from behind. You know, this is not last year. Just because they got off to a slow start and went to game set in the last year, this ain't last year. This is a totally different team with totally different expectations. So they need to start for me anyway. And again, I've talked to enough coaches. They feel the same way. It needs to start heading in the right direction real quick. 416-8700-0590-star-591-triple-8-triple-6-0590.

The text line is open. It's always open. We call it the people's text line. It actually shows the one that first called it the people's text line. I like it. And I'm using it. 59590 is a text line name and location. Please, the blue jays have lost two under the Milwaukee Burrs. They've lost the series. They've given the jays have not won a series this year since sweeping your Oakland up. No, I did it. They have not won a series this year since sweeping your a's, sweeping your a's to open the season. A lot of talk, obviously, about the players who aren't here, almost as much as the players who are here. We know, of course, about the injuries to the lineup. There's a lot going on in terms of blue jays pitching, Jose Brio's made a start. I believe yesterday or certainly he's going to make a start today. We have been told by a little bird that Jimmy Garcia might be closer to getting up here than people think. And Treyas Savage was a triple A and made a start at Triple A. He's knocking down the door. May join the team in Anaheim.

Maybe let's see what John Schneider says about what will happen with today's starter Patrick Corbin when Treyas Savage returns. You know, whenever Trey does get back here in Jose, you know, you kind of just look at what everyone's doing really and then how you can kind of feel the best 13, you know, but, you know, I think Pat's pretty versatile, you know, and he knows how to pitch. So just hopefully keep building off of this and whenever that time comes, you know, whenever that shakes out, over which shakes out, you know, I think that he's still got a lot of good stuff in him. You know, I wanted to mention this because, you know, obviously the loss and the lack of offense and all that, you'll take this out of Patrick Corbin 11 days out of 10. And we know from talking to Pete Walker in our show a couple of days ago, there was some thought about maybe using an opener in this game. And you know, I think the way things developed with the bullpen over the course of the last two nights with with Hoffman throwing 30 odd pitches and Tyler Rogers, you know, needing to be used and Mason flew hardy being used twice.

I think that that option probably probably went out the door. I mean, I'm not certain you'd want to use Spencer Miles to open against this, the top of this order necessarily. But, you know, they've got Max Scherzer and Eric Lauer making stars coming up in this next series. There'll be a lot of eyes, a lot of eyes on them because the Jays, the Jays just, they need to keep getting innings. They need to get innings out of three, four and five. And I say, I mean, not even looking, I think Eric Lauer, obviously you kind of want a little bit of performance. But at this point, all I want out of Max and Patrick Corbin, Kevin, just give me five and keep me close. I'm not going to get greedy with those two. Yeah, I think, you know, you saw it kind of in the fourth inning of why they're thinking about the opener right with Patrick instead of that being the second time of facing the top of the order, that would have been the first time for him. And the element of surprise would have still been there. And that way instead of throwing, you know, the five innings he could have gave you an

extra inning. You got a little deeper that way with a used a left, you know, one less bullpen arm. Just trying to sort of piece it together, throw as many as you go through that seventh if you do it that way. There it is. That kind of thing, right? That's the point using the opener. It's just how many times the guy doesn't face the top of the lineup, right? The less times he does it, the deeper he could possibly get into the game, which will allow, you know, John and Pety to figure out who they don't want to use coming out of the pen that day to make it easier for them to use the guy when it matters the most and give that lineup a chance to have a decently big inning. So yeah, I mean, that's the sort of the thing is they know what they thought what they're not doing, which is going runs and always playing great defense. So how do you combat that? Yes, keep the other team scoring and as many arms as you can throw at them as possible, that might give you a better chance, especially with the three dudes that are at the back into your rotation. Nigel and Whitby, it's comical listening to Vladie criticism. He's hitting 328-ish, I think it's actually 313 now, on a team where he is, oh, maybe

it's a little better on a team where he doesn't have or where he has zero protection. Does he press sometimes? Of course, that's baseball. Yeah. Randy and Monkton, the injury bug is hitting hard. It's enough for three teams. And once they start getting healthy, it should start coming around, um, Travis and Bell, though, what do you think about some more strut bats? Yeah, absolutely. Why not? Absolutely. Why not? Why not? Yeah. He drops in runs. He hits relievers. He plays great defense. Why not? I mean, I wouldn't, yeah, sure. Don't abuse it. But why not? No. No, at this point, if you're John, you've, you've got to go with, uh, I mean, you've got to go with, with the player that, that is going to, uh, with the line that's going to give you a chance. First half to you of, you, you have no choice. Um, what, uh, I'm sitting here trying to, trying to figure out how to ask this question without, uh, without sounding like I'm really looking for silver lining here.

Um, under recent men as again today, doubles, uh, reaches on an infield hit right now, probably their best offensive player. Uh, can you keep this going? Absolutely. I said that to you in spring training when you asked me, no, you said, you said he was, you're picked to quick. Yeah, I did. I mean, the guy that stood out to me and he was the guy. The first time I watched him swing, he looks totally different. He walks a different way. He acts a different way. Even when he does the ABS thing, he got it wrong, but there's confidence there that he thinks he saw the ball long enough that he thought that was a ball or a strike. Like he feels confident in what he's swinging at and can he get the barrel to the baseball and with the new little lower half thing that's repeatable, you know, he's got the little toe tap. Now all of a sudden that I'd mentioned a couple days ago that I, that I'd seen the two strike approach, which we've never seen him do. The striped separate and just trying to throw the barrel at the ball. I mean, this is just because you now all of a sudden feel confident that your good swing is started from the ground up.

You can repeat that. And now it's just seeing the ball out of the hand and beating the guy to the spot occasionally because you're an educated guessing enough because you got confidence. Absolutely. And I like it. Boy, he's got a sweet swing. He, you know, he can think up the middle of the other way and still get the head out on 98, which is not the easiest thing to do, but give him kudos from where he was last year to where he is now. I want him up in a big spot. I don't know about you. Yeah, he, I mean, you nailed it in spring training. You really did. I asked you the first thing when he came back. What really impressed you? He said, Andre Semenas is going to have the big year and I just kind of, you know, rolled my eyes. But there is, you know, look, the people he talked around the J's, they'll tell you, there is an offensive player in there. I mean, they've said that. They think there is an offensive player in there. Yeah, he's go, he's a gold glove defender. He's, you know, he's, he's, he's a really good shortstop, really good second baseman, all that stuff.

But the J's do think there is, there is an offensive player in there. Yeah, I'm not disagreeing, you know, and I think, you know, the people that are listening to us, I think you got to remember to, you can criticize a player and still love him. You know, we, we criticize Blady because we think very highly of him and think that he can carry the team for long periods of time until a bunch of people get back and right now, I'd like to see the effects get a little bit better. And I'm sure if you walked up to him and said, Hey, Blady, what'd you think about your bat, the sixth inning, you know, why were you visibly frustrated with yourself? I'm sure he'd give you the same answer that I just gave. So it's okay. I mean, it's okay to hold guys that can do it to a higher standard than everybody else. Yeah, because generally, honestly, it's been my experience that you find out that they're doing the same thing. Absolutely. The elite, the elite players hold themselves to account. And I do think that, you know, I've said this. I thought throughout a flight, he's career people some, just because the guy talks to people

at first base and generally enjoys playing baseball doesn't mean that he isn't, you know, that is not driving him nuts that he can't, that he can't, you can't big borrower steal a home run right now. Yeah, I don't want to bring this up, but Aaron judge has never had protection. Ever. Fair point. Ever. How many have won Soto? I mean, so, but he's, he's had a lot, you know, yeah, I mean, Soto hit in front of the judge. Not behind it. Yeah, that's true. That's true. You're right. So there was a, interesting, I don't know, I guess I'd call it an incident, it was caught in TV and the eighth and like it. Trevor McGill, the, yeah, the brewers reliever. He comes on and gets a ball thrown back and he starts wiping it on the side of his leg, which here, I mean, there were a bunch of things that you, you can't do that. There are a bunch of things he can do. And of course, everybody, I mean, frankly, I don't know if the Jay, I don't think the

Jay's thought he was loading the ball up or anything like that because he's been dog crap, basically, for most, most of the year, but you can't do it. You can't do it. And the, the Jay's got on him for it and there was a little back and forth after the beginning was over. He looked to me on TV at least, looked to me like he said something or gave one of those, you know, fisheye looks to Dalton Varsho and then Vladie kind of said some words to him. So this is, this is John Schneider was asked about the, the encounter with McGill. Me as a, as a person, you know, you don't, you don't appreciate when another grown man yells what he did in your face. So you just kind of reacted in the moment. But we got other stuff to worry about other than that, you know, I mean, he's got other stuff to worry about. I got other stuff to worry about. Our team's got other stuff to worry about. So, you know, we're kind of both in the same place right now, us and them. So he to the, he to the moment, no big deal. There's some of that going on. Boy, Pat Murphy lit up was a Greg Jones after that, the stolen base attempt, but yeah, you know, it seems to me.

I'm sure I haven't gone on, gone on Brewers, you know, I haven't seen any of the Brewers post game comments. My, my thought is he must have missed a sign or something like that. Yeah. That's a, that's a tough look, man. Like they're, you, well, I'll let you talk about that. Well, they won. I mean, what they won, but you know, that show and your player up, you know, you can tell the player, you kind of didn't really know how to react. Okay. Whether he missed a sign, whether, you know, it was because they were trying to do things. I don't know who knows what it was, but to sort of meet him coming off the field and follow him down the dugout, it's, you know, you're in the big leagues. All them dudes are, you know, getting paid at the highest level because they, they can do things, take him in the tunnel, say what you need to say to him. Or nobody can see you do it, but that seems to be the way Pat is like you screw up. He's going to get you. He's going to, he's going to show that, you know, if you do it, he'll say it to anybody. I think that's kind of the point he's trying to make. You know, the, the yelling and screaming back and forth, looked at me like you could see a little brown stuff on the side of the pitchers, Pant. I'm sure that's what the dugout saw.

You see him, you know, and, and when he got it, he threw the ball away like this is, you know, one team struggling, the other team struggling. One dude on the mound struggling, he'll do whatever it takes to get people out. You know, he's sort of been demoted. He wasn't pitching the ninth. He's pitching the eighth. So we all, he was already cheered off the field the last time he was there. Already chapped running out of the bullpened. So, and, and, and he used some words towards John with, you know, grown man saying things like that, the other grown man's going to get that grown man a little fired up. So, yeah, it's nothing wrong with it, you know, I mean, it would help going out and kicking people's butts, stop yelling at each other, go out there and string together some big at bats, somebody run into one and you're beating guys to death. You don't have to worry about whether a guy's scraping the ball down his leg or not. That's just me. But good for them. They got it out of the way. Just give something else. John has to answer for after the game, which I'm sure it wasn't very happy about. I'm sure. Knowing John, I'm sure we probably enjoyed having it. John, John enjoys that part of the game. He gives us good as he, he gives us good as he takes. I'm sure not. But yeah, you saw, we saw what we saw in this, let's, we saw two swirly teams in this series.

Like two teams that, that are not, can't be happy where they are right now. You know, the brewers of what had they lost six on a row coming in, seven on a row coming in or something like that, you know, lots of issues. They've got injuries too, you know, ton of injuries, um, I saw Daniel Volga back in the dugout and I had to think, man, are they so hurt that they called Daniel Volga back? And then I realized, no, he's a coach, which is, uh, I'm serious. Two on the Blue Jays, they have lost the Milwaukee Brewers, the Jays still have not won the series since the first series of the year. But the good news is they get to try it against starting to more night in Arizona. So thank you for joining us. Blue Jays baseball is brought to you by your local family on Crown R Us Control Center.
