Though legally married until their 1968 divorce, the couple separated in 1951. Gleason became a dad at just 23 with Geraldine's birth, and early fatherhood seemed to touch him deeply. The family briefly reunited in 1948, with the second wedding ceremony, before moving to Hollywood for his career. After the final split, he lived separately, but still visited his girls now and then. The daughters understood their dad's distance as they grew up, seeing it as his shy nature, rather than neglect. Geraldine stayed private, attending schools in New York and California, marrying agent John Chutuck in 1961, and having a son in 1964.
