It's Not Them Attacking You - It's You! - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast
About this episode
Do you sometimes take things too personally? Many of us do, and there’s a good reason for it – we are the center of our world, so when something upsets us, it feels like it’s about us. A really good skill to learn is how to step back from something that upsets you and examine it to see if it’s really as personal as it feels.
A friend was asked to help with something she really wanted to help with, and her reply was a happy “yes.” Then she found out there were some rules that went with the commitment, and there was one that she couldn’t say “yes” to. When she talked to the person who invited her, there was no allowance made – since she would be in violation of one of the rules, the invitation was withdrawn, and she felt disrespected and angry.
When she thought about it from the other person’s perspective, she realized that it wasn’t personal – it was just a set of rules that everyone had to abide by.
Next time you take something personally, look at it in a bigger-picture way – you might see it’s not about you, too!
