1:00they're sealing as a national championship. However, they have struggled shooting the ball this season and that could be the biggest thing holding them back early on in this tournament. I can't wait to see how this whole game goes down. We've obviously done a ton of preview, but I wanted to look at the big tournament picture as a whole here and look at Iowa State, how they could do down the stretch. My biggest concern really is the shooting. Is that that big of a deal? We'll start there. Then in the second segment, we're going to talk about Iowa State as a two seed. How do they square up against the odds of what two seeds have done in the past?

2:01We'll talk about that. And then finally, to finish out the episode today, we're going to talk about Iowa State bringing in freshmen. What is the strategy moving forward? I saw something yesterday that I really wanted to point out. I've been thinking about it for a while and we're going to finally break it down today here on Lockdown Cyclones, your team every day. Let's talk about the shooting while the Iowa State has felt this season. Now when you look at season averages for Iowa State, obviously one man stands above the rest. Milon, Momschilovich, has been just incredible, right? It was shooting well over 50 percent, upwards of 55 percent for a good portion of the season from beyond the arc. And as of now, it is closer to that 50 percent just under right around that 49 percent. So aside from Milon, however, Iowa State has looked relatively solid, not stand out like Milon, but relatively solid. As a team on the year, there are 307 for 794 from beyond the arc or in other words, 38 percent from three. And from the field, they're shooting 49 percent, which is pretty good.

3:04I'm not going to lie to you. There obviously is the glaring concern of free throws and we'll address those in a second. The number that you're looking for there is 67.2 percent on the season. But the reason I bring up shooting as a whole is I don't think it is only going to come down to free throws. As we get into elite eight, sweet 16 games, I would argue, obviously, final four national championship are even bigger stages. But elite eight, I think is probably where this is going to be the biggest deal. And depending on who they get in the sweet 16, it could certainly surface. Iowa State shooting free throws is going to play a big role, right? As those games get closer, if Iowa State has the lead, trying to fend off the other team when fouls are, you know, intentional at the end of the game, or if Iowa State is trying to claw their way back. Iowa State has a very prominent tendency to draw the foul right under the basket, not make it and then miss the free throws, which is completely null and voids the entire possession. But let's zoom out and look at the entire game because those free throws, yes, they're important the entire way. And I would argue, Iowa State might have B Arizona if they hadn't shot four for eight from

4:08the line in that game. And obviously not all eight of those free throws were shot in the last three minutes. So they're important the entire game. But all offense is kind of a, I would say equally important on some level. And Iowa State at times, if they're not shooting the ball well, their offense just is not there. That is my biggest concern with Iowa State moving forward. I think after having some time to think on it, obviously the free throw percentage is the easy one. Everyone wants to talk about it. Everyone wants to point about point at it. It's an easy number 67.2% on the season. My goodness, you've got players shooting well under 50%. Joshua Jefferson at 47, Taiman Lipsy at 40, excuse me, those are from the field. That's why I was so concerned. But you do have Eric Mulder shooting under 50%. You just can't have guys shooting from the free throw line like that. And that's why it's going to be so easy to point out. And because the traditional numbers from the field are relatively solid, that's not going to be a stat that a lot of people are going to point out. But when Iowa State does go cold, which they have at times, their solution to this is

5:10essentially run ISO ball, give the ball to the best guys on our team and just hope they start making shots. That is not going to be an effective strategy when you're facing Virginia or when you're facing Michigan, right? When you're facing Tennessee State or if they end up facing Santa Clara or even honestly Kentucky, those are teams you can probably get away with a strategy like that. You can, and that's why Iowa State is that kill shot metric that's been thrown around by Evan Miyakawa, it's, I think that fits perfectly into Iowa State's play style. They give up more 10 or runs than anybody because when they're not scoring, they don't change anything. They just keep shooting and missing, hoping that the next shot is going to bring them some momentum. That's not really how offense works. You need to adjust on the fly. So Iowa State has like, I think the second or third most kill shots, 10 or runs in the entire country on the season. But they also give up a ridiculous amount because when they're not scoring, obviously that lends itself to a 10 or run from the other team, they don't change anything. That's what I want to see from this team in this tournament is I need to see some adjustments

6:14made, especially offensively when things are going their way. If they're not getting open looks, we're going to have to change how the offense fires a little bit. If we're not making shots, we're going to have to get closer to the basket in some way shape or form cuts off ball screens, whatever it is, Iowa State has to find a way to put the ball through the hoop, right? You have to score points, and especially as we get later in this tournament, that is my main concern. Iowa State's defense is incredible. Fourth in the nation going into this tournament. There is no doubt that Iowa State can hang with the best of the best defensively. However, offensively, I mean, we saw the biggest one that comes to mind was when they were to see against Illinois. That team, they were incredible defensively, but there was always a question of, are they going to score 60 points? You can hold your opponent to 47, but if you only score 46, it doesn't do a whole lot for you. Right? So I think the same thing applies to this team, and I think that this team is a little bit different with their makeup as far as Tame and Lipsi being a shot creator with his

7:17assist ability, low turnover ratio, Joshua Jefferson can finish or at least create, let's say he can create shots. He does struggle to finish around the rim in my opinion. Mealon can get hot at any time, Blake Buchanan can come in flying through the air on a putback. And I do like where they're out offensively more now than I did a few years ago. But there is still that element of they just, they really go in bursts. They will go through three or four or five games where they just look incredible offensive efficiency off the charts. And then they'll have a two, three, four game stretch where it doesn't look like they've ever touched a basketball in their life. They don't really know how to shoot it. They don't know how to generate offense, especially when their opponent knows how to take away what they're best at. And of course, in a round of 32 game or in an elite eight game, it's less likely that a team has had a ton of time to game plan for you, or coaches are obviously working behind the scenes on whoever they're facing if they win their first game of the weekend.

8:17But on those, this game, the round of 64. And then in the, the sweet 16 games where teams have a whole week to prepare, you think they're not going to have a way to shut down Iowa State's offense. Iowa State has to have a way to pivot, Iowa State has to have a way to, okay, if we're not getting the looks that we want for Milan, maybe we use him as a decoy and we bring someone, you know, cut through the lane and, and force them to stop that. And then we get Milan, those open shots. I trust TJ Alzelberger, but I definitely trust him more defensively than I do offensively. And I think if there's anything we're going to draw from this tournament, whether, you know, they, aside from finish, right? So do they finish in the sweet 16, the elite eight, like, is this a successor or failure? I want to see how TJ Alzelberger handles his offense because if this offense ends up slipping away and that's the reason they lose, they only scored, you know, 67 in their, their loss to whoever is a 60, let's say even lower than that, like a 61 to 68 final.

9:18This team is capable of scoring a lot more points. It's just clear that their opponent shut down what they did best. And if there was no adjustment made, just, it just didn't happen in time. And I, I think that's probably the one area where I can see TJ Alzelberger make a jump in this tournament. Now, of course, free throws, we touched on it. We're just going to say it one more time. This team has to shoot better. It's plain simple. There's not really a lot of adjustments that get made from the free throw line because the entire game stops and you have to make your shots there. I mean, we'll see if we'll see if it pans out 67% for the season. It's just way too low in my opinion. This games get tighter. They will. And obviously it has performed well in late game, obviously when it's a very close game. But in the tournament, anything can happen. You're down six, your, your opponent is probably going to be shooting like 80% from three when they're down six. It's going to get close. I would say it's going to have to make free throws to push them through to the next round. We'll see if that happens or not. There's no adjustments that can be made there. That being said, we do have to talk about the odds because I would stay as a two seed.

10:19Obviously, it's better odds than as a three seed, but can they outperform the percentages that are surprisingly low? We'll talk about that coming up right here after this. It spurred the statistician in me. The amateur statistician, I should say, to look more into what I was looking at as far as two seeds and percentages and moving on. Then I was like, this doesn't really. is a match how I feel about Iowa State. So let's break down those numbers here in just a second. It was talking about 15% of two seeds get bounced, 4% of two seeds make the final four. I found that to be quite ridiculous. I didn't know if this

13:23was true, if it wasn't. So I went, ran the numbers, found the data and it's much, it's not that. 20% of two seeds all time have made the final four and only about 8% ish have lost in the first round. Definitely not what the numbers that we saw were, but I will say they were lower than what I thought. Only 20% making the final four and only 3% of two seeds winning a national title all time. 93% advancing through the first round 93.2. So it's like that 8.6% 8.8% whatever it was. Roughly, right around there. Only 70% advancing to the elite. I feel like Iowa State has different odds. And we just got done talking for 10 minutes about how Iowa State shooting wells could hold them back in this tournament. And I understand that. But when you look at their path to the final four, let's say, I feel like Iowa State has a higher chance than 20% of making it to the final four.

14:26Tennessee State in the first round shouldn't be a problem. Obviously, upsets happened, right? VCU beat North Carolina. There were some other, I thought kind of saw state was going to get Gonzaga. Obviously, TCU, I suppose I was technically an upside high point. That was the other one I was looking for. They do happen. And 152s have happened in the past. That's why it's not 100% of two seeds move on to the round of 32. But I think Iowa State has pretty good shot against Tennessee State based on all the advanced metrics that I've looked at. They'll face either Kentucky or Santa Clara. Those two will square off at right away today. So that's going to be we're going to kind of know who the opponent will be. And I will say I'm a slightly more alarmed on the Santa Clara size side of things. I think Kentucky obviously has higher talent ceiling. So we'll see who they get. But either way, I feel like top of the big 12 middle of the SEC or Santa Clara. I'm taking the top of the big 12 all day long. So I like Iowa State moving on to the sweet 16 to second weekend. From there, we'll find out today who it is. Tennessee. Well, I guess we won't find out exactly who it is,

15:27but at least we'll have an arrow down to two teams between Tennessee, Miami, Virginia, and right state. Of course, I mean Miami Ohio. And I like Iowa State to match up at every single one of those opponent games. So they're probably moving on to the elite eight. And I'll say if St. Louis stays as hot as they are, they could beat Michigan. I think Texas Tech has a real shot at beating Michigan. I think Alabama could beat Michigan if they can get through Hofstra. I think Michigan will be tested on their way to the elite eight against Iowa State. And if nothing else, I think Iowa State against Michigan is a decent chance. I don't know if I would go so low as to say I would say only as a 20% chance of winning that game. I feel like Iowa State's chances of making the final four. Now, of course, I understand these are not independent events. They are dependent variables. Right. So Iowa State has to beat Tennessee State and then beat Kentucky. And then beat Virginia or Tennessee or Miami or Wright State or and then beat Michigan. Like, I understand that there's a lot of and thens in this whole thing. And that's what lowers the percentage down. You can't just like win six out of your next 10. You have to win six in a row to

16:30win a national title. So I do understand that. But I like Iowa State's odds in every single game. And I looking at the statistics here would not say Iowa State only has a 68% chance of beating Kentucky or Santa Clara. I wouldn't say Iowa State only has a 70% chance of beating Tennessee or Virginia or whoever it is in the sweet 16. I think Iowa State has a much closer to an 80 or an 85%. I think they're a much better team despite all of the criticism that I've thrown their way. Talking about their shooting struggles, talking about their offensive identity struggles, free throw line. This team is incredible. They are too seed for a reason. I think that they the biggest concern is they play down to their competition at times. Obviously the BYU loss. I don't think BYU is all that great. And their season just ended the other day yesterday. That's my only problem with this Iowa State team is when they're playing the best of the best, they play up to that level. Obviously, if you're playing down to your competition, that's going to change those percentage numbers. But I like Iowa State and just but everything

17:31one of these matchups. And I think they have a significantly better than 20% chance at making a final four. That being said, to make the national championship game or to win the title game, 3% does feel about right. That feels about right. You're probably going to play it in Arizona. And provided Duke doesn't go into every game the same way they did against Sienna, you're probably going to play a Duke. Could be a Houston. And if it's Houston, I give them much better than 3%. But it's so matchup dependent. And there's still so many teams left in the field. It's hard to really say exactly what kind of percentage they're dealing with that 3% number. That feels a little bit more right to me than 20% to make the final four. If I were to readjust the numbers, I would say Iowa State has much closer to a 27, 28% closer to 30, which doesn't seem like a lot. I understand that. It's only 7%. It's like my sales tax. Yeah, I know that I forget sales tax. Tax exists. It's a small number, but 20 to 27%.

18:34In this case, it's actually a relatively large jump going from one in five to nearly a one in three chance. I think that's much closer to what Iowa State is dealing with here. Obviously, you have to win every single game. And then winning the national championship 3% feels about right. Obviously, depending on matchup, I could bump that up to maybe 5%. I do think that this seems capable. They just have to string together six games, which we haven't really seen them do. That being said, that's all for this season, right? Let's take a look into the future and to the next two, three, four years based on the result from this year. You'll see exactly what I mean in just a second coming up right here after this. And I saw BYU plan. I will say in my bracket, I had Texas beating BYU. So in some ways that feels good that I got it right. And obviously in others, I don't love to see Iowa states becoming our tribal lose BYU's very, very solid team. And of course they beat us this season. So you kind of

21:41have to take that for what it is. But it got me thinking because AJ DeBanza played ridiculously well scored 35 of BYU's 71 points, which is almost 50%. 35 out of, well, he had 35 in the rest of his team at 36 ridiculous ridiculous. So a few of the highlights. Oh my goodness. The kids incredible. I bring that up because he's probably going to go number one in the NBA draft more than likely. As of right now, the mock draft that the field of 68 big board that I'm looking at. DeBanza goes one Peterson from Kansas goes to Booser goes three Wilson from North Carolina goes four Fleming's goes five from Houston. Excuse me. And then Wagler from Illinois goes six. Why am I bringing all this up? Well, I can't imagine what Jake Hatch is feeling right now. I've locked on Cougs right or Cougars thinking, you know, you got a full season with BYU or with AJ DeBanza. Look at where BYU's at. And now you're basically resetting for next season. And

22:41what did BYU get out of that year with AJ DeBanza? How much money did they spend on a player like AJ DeBanza to finish middle of the pack in the big 12 to lose in the first round of the big 12 tournament? Or excuse me of the NCAA tournament? Is that was that worth it? I suppose in some regards. Now every time AJ DeBanza makes a play, that's the guy from BYU is what people are thinking. So there is that maybe some brand recognition because he's incredible. And I'm not saying that it's never worth bringing in a player like that because there are other so incredible freshmen. Obviously, like the guys I just named, Cameron Boos or Darren Peterson, I don't know if necessarily Kansas is in this conversation of national title contenders, but Keaton Wagler, right? And I would argue, Houston's a very much contender, Fleming's. Okay. You could maybe argue, Burys, yeah, with Arizona, absolutely. I don't know if he's necessarily the one man showed to BANSA was. But my point with all of this is moving forward,

23:43should Iowa State, if they had unlimited money, which they don't, if they had unlimited money, should they try to bring in the number one recruit in the nation? Should I jump up and down when Iowa State gets number one, or should I feel maybe like, oh, that wasn't the right play? Should I be more excited about number 10 and I'm number 15 in the country? Someone who will stick around for four years, because when you look at Iowa State's roster now, Damon Lipsy, how long has he been on the team? Or in college basketball is it even a good question, right? Joshua Jefferson, how long has he been on the team and been in college basketball? Me a lot more chilevich, how long has he been on the team been in college basketball? That veteran leadership, I feel like goes a long way. And BYU losing, of course, it stings for BYU fans, especially, but as a big 12 fan, you want to see big 12 do well, I would have loved to have seen them go far. Even just for the fact of, I like watching AJ DeBanza playing college. He's incredible. But is it a legitimate realistic strategy for Iowa State to get to that next level? If they don't win it all this year, which I think they're very

24:45capable of doing, if they don't win it all this year, is the next move to bring in the next AJ DeBanza to bring in a camera embuser? Is it to bring in a freshman that is just so unbelievably good you get one season out of them? We were talking about that a little bit with Killian Torrey a few months ago. Oh, we might only get one year out of Torrey. That was around the players era. There was a chance technically at that point. He was going to average 20 points of game and play the best defense any freshmen ever played. Didn't really pan out. I do think we're going to get Torrey back, provided the transfer all doesn't snag him. But obviously that's a very real threat. So I shouldn't just throw that out there. That's very real. But I speak more from the perspective of Iowa State's going to lose a lot of talent this next season, more than likely. Obviously, guys to senior class and then guys that might leave early for the draft and guys for the portal. When TJ Altsberg was rebuilding this team, should he bring in a super expensive rookie or freshman? No, I don't think so. I think that's a terrible move for a lot of different colleges. As you can see, like a DeBanza just didn't pan out for BYU. I would say Peterson and Kansas didn't

25:49really work out for them, especially with all of the question marks around his playing time. Obviously, UNC out of the tournament. All right. And as you get down this list of this big board here, and as you get from the top 10 down into the top 20, number 20 right now in this big board has been it starts. And he's not really even in the same category right now. Like that's kind of the jump, right? So you would have to get a top five guy to be in this conversation that I'm having right now. And it's not always going to guarantee you success in the post season or even success in the regular season. Injuries can come up BYU dealt with injuries this season. All that's going to do is set Iowa State back generations monetarily. Whether we like it or not, Iowa State just doesn't have the money to do something like that. And I'm kind of tired of pretending like, oh, it's it's a possibility. Like they can do this. They can do that. We are basically playing on an entirely different checkbook than every other team. I would say pretty much every other team in the country. You could argue some of the other Iowa teams are in the same boat,

26:52obviously with the legislation that we've talked about over and over from the board of regents. But I would say Iowa State's operating much closer to a UNI to a school like Jamie Pollard has alluded to Iowa State could potentially become that size of school. You can't bring in and obviously boosters are a thing and the money like that just doesn't flow through Iowa State like that. So should Iowa State be worried about bringing in the top recruits? No. No, I honestly never have felt that way and I will continue to not really feel that way because if they're good enough to go one and done, they don't really matter in the grand scheme of long term success. You can have a flash in the pan absolutely, but you're not going to get three titles out of them. And in that one year, there's no guarantee that all goes well to win a national title, to win a big 12 title, to win a big 12 regular season title. You need so many things to go your way in one season. The odds are just ridiculously low. Iowa State has been very lucky so far this year.

27:54If they if they were to do all of these things right with some phenom freshman, yes, they would be better. But would they be better with a phenom freshman and a bunch of things don't go their way? No. No, if a bunch of injuries happen or some crazy ball bounces not their way and they end up as the going from the 80 to the 90s in the big 12 term, they don't win. They barely make it in their, let's say 12 seed in the NCAA tournament or 11 seed like Texas and they've got a tough path and the ceiling is there like no, I think I'd rather take the situation there in now, which is they've built up a team through culture through, you know, years and veteran leadership and you have freshmen that play well because they're taught by the veterans. It's not a team of 18 year olds who haven't really been in these, you know, big time NCAA tournament close game situations. They haven't had the time to learn what it takes to become a pro, to learn what it takes to become a high level athlete at Iowa State. They just, it's, it's an entirely different game. I think Iowa

28:54State is doing it right and I like the way TJ Altsberger operates. I think the biggest scare that I have with TJ Altsberger is potentially Jamie Pollard, right? I have no issues with the way TJ Altsberger runs his program and I think obviously money can be a problem over the next few years, not only for the players, but for TJ Altsberger as well. But as of now, the way things have been run, TJ Altsberger is doing it right and I'm never going to get bent out of shape about, you know, all this recruiting class is way too low on the on the rankings or whatever. I think in basketball, especially, I would say in football, it's probably a little different, but in basketball, especially, you can be okay with a middle of the pack recruiting class. I mean, how about high point? Where did high point fall in the national recruiting class rankings for the season? Right? Probably not all that high. 29:56anybody. Now, game after game is different. I understand that regular season versus postseason, one game at a time versus a huge stretch of games very different. But I think I would say it's going to be just fine. Never going to get upset if they don't bring home the number one, number two, number three recruit. If they do, great. Awesome. Obviously, you'd rather have more talent on the team. But from with the money factor as a part of this whole thing, the situation Iowa State is in, I'm not going to get upset if they don't bring in those types of talents. I think T. Johnson Burger is a great job of setting up the culture the right way and still bringing Iowa State tons of success over the last five years. It's been ridiculous. That being said, first game today, you take an Iowa State or are you going to maybe go against the grain here locked on cyclones and take Tennessee State.
