You're listening to Israel Today ongoing war report. I'm Noah Levi. US officials are expressing concerns that Iran may be preparing for a significant escalation in its conflict with the United States, according to the New York Times, which cited recent US intelligence reports. This potential intensification is reportedly fueled by Iran's increased confidence in its military capabilities and a reluctance among its leaders to agree to a ceasefire. The reports suggest Iran might target more ships in the state of Hormuz and US infrastructure within the region. Beyond traditional warfare, US officials are also worried about cyber attacks. US officials believe Iran linked hackers were responsible for cyber attacks on over 100 water systems across the United States in July, causing disruptions and requiring boil water advisories. Though no systems were degraded to the point of making water unsafe, current and former US officials also told the New York Times that US oil and gas infrastructure could be targeted, though these systems are considered more
secure. Experts suggest Iran may also be using these cyber capabilities to undermine domestic support for the war in the US. Alex Orlions, a former US government cybersecurity contractor, told the New York Times that such attacks, even if unsuccessful, can contribute to exhausting domestic patience with the administration's handling of the conflict. Representative Josh Gothamer of New Jersey told the New York Times, the Iranians think they have maximum leverage, suggesting a strategy to drag out the war, potentially until the US midterm elections. Adding to this, Meta has reported a network of Iranian-origin accounts spreading propaganda focused on US politics, including anti-republican views. While domestic Iranian media has published extensive coverage of President Trump and the midterm elections. In other news, a notable division has emerged among prominent Jewish figures and organizations concerning recent comments by actor and producer Mark Ruffalo. Ruffalo has faced accusations of employing antisemitic tropes about Jewish wealth
and power in statements related to the pending acquisition of Warner Bros' discovery by Paramount and Skydance. In response, approximately 170 prominent Jewish individuals, including entertainers, rabbis and physicians, have released an open letter defending Ruffalo, calling the accusations a false and dangerous weaponization of charges of antisemitism. George Clooney has also defended Ruffalo. The controversy began when Ruffalo linked Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, son of one of the world's wealthiest men, Larry Ellison, to an apartheid system of oppression in Gaza, referencing Oracle's stake in TikTok. Ruffalo also described Larry Ellison as a classic oligarch and accused him of crushing workers and consolidating the wealth of the world. Critics, such as the head of the Jewish Federation of Greater Loes Angels, stated that Ruffalo's comments combined Jewish wealth, media control, secret technology and sinister global power, drawing on recognizable antisemitic tropes.
