Is This Amazonian Oil the Next Beauty Miracle? — Daniela Botero

About this episode

The Dr. Randi Show is made possible by:

What if one of beauty’s most powerful ingredients has been hiding in the Amazon for centuries?

Actress, model and Xirü founder Daniela Botero joins Dr. Randi Boyette to reveal why cacay oil, often called “nature’s retinol,” could become the next major ingredient for skin, body and hair. Naturally rich in vitamin A, vitamin E and essential fatty acids, this Amazonian oil has become the foundation of the entire Xirü collection.

Daniela shares how she discovered cacay oil, the difference it made in her own skin and hair, and how she joined forces with her husband Brent Saunders, the former CEO of Allergan and current chairman and CEO of Bausch + Lomb, and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Bertha Baum to bring it into an elevated line of beauty products.

From achieving smoother, more radiant skin to nourishing the body, scalp and hair, Daniela walks Dr. Randi through the many ways she uses cacay oil, including her signature gua sha ritual and the hair-oiling routine she swears by. She also reveals some of the more unexpected lessons she has picked up from years in front of the camera, from Colombian beauty traditions and rituals discovered around the world to the surprising supermodel secrets behind her “less is more” philosophy.

Could this ancient Amazonian oil really be the beauty ingredient we’ve all been waiting for?

When did you first use cacao oil and what made you think there's something different about this? So cacao was this cobra a long time ago around 200 years ago. The first time I used cacao was in 2018. I was going through a lot of skin issues. I was having acne, rosacea and cystic acne. At that time I was doing acne and modeling. It was very stressful for me to see my skin like that. I discovered cacao in one of my trips to Colombia. I was working with a makeup artist. He said to me, you have a very bad rosacea. I want you to try this oil, pure oil of cacao. I think it's amazing. I've been using this product for a while. I'll use it with all my clients. I tried a guy for three days and I saw a huge difference on the redness on my skin. So at that time, for your softer, I met my husband. My husband was as well on the beauty industry.

So I started creating the idea of sedu with cacao as a hero ingredient. This episode of the Dr. Randy show is proudly sponsored by New Beauty, the ultimate authority in beauty and aesthetics. Hello everyone and welcome back to the beauty scene where we step outside the usual conversations and get into what everyone's talking about. But not everyone is saying out loud. I'm your host, Dr. Randy Boyette. After more than 15 years as an international model and actress, one extraordinary beauty discovery inspired Daniela Botero to create a line of her own. Daniela is the co-founder of Saru, a collection that extends from the face and body to the hair and scalp with cacao oil at the center of it all.

I have the full collection in front of me today and we're going to find out what makes Saru stand out and why cacao oil has become such a beauty obsession. Daniela, welcome to the beauty scene. Thank you so much, Dr. Randy, such a pleasure to be here in this special space and thank you for trying to see you. It's a very new grant for us, so we're very excited. Well, we're excited to get the conversation started as well. And Daniela, you have spent more than 15 years as an international model and actress who has had access to some of the best beauty products in the world. What did you feel that was missing from your beauty routine that you wanted to start Saru? Lean beauty, clean effective beauty. I start as you mentioned 15 years ago in ERO by start modeling for different brands. I was very young when I started I was a old 18 year soul. And on my second pregnancy, I was becoming very obsessed with clean beauty and clean effective beauty actually.

We use so many products I need sad because many brands they said 98% natural, but 2% is really bad. So I want to create something that was meaningful with a hero ingredient that I'm falling in love with and that's how we'll see the game clear world. When did you first use cacao oil and what made you think there's something different about this? So cacao was this cober long time ago around 200 years ago. The first time I used cacao was in 2018. I was going through a lot of skin issues. I was having acne, rosacea and cystic acne. And at that time I was doing acting and modeling. So it was very stressful for me to see my skin like that. And I discovered cacao in one of my trips to Colombia. I was working with a makeup artist and he said to me, then you have a very bad rosacea. I want you to try this oil pure oil of cacao. I think it's amazing. I've been using this product for a while.

I'll use it with all my clients. They love it. And I tried a guy for three days and I saw a huge difference on the redness on my skin. So at that time, to your softer, I met my husband. My husband was as well on the beauty industry. So I started creating the idea of cido with cacao as a hero ingredient. And then somewhere along the line, you were convinced that cacao could become the foundation for an entire line for the face, body, hair and scalp. What was the initial spark to say, let's turn this into a business? A guy has a lot of leonate acid has a lot of natural red, you know, vitamin A. So it's a great product not only for the face, but also for this call where you combine the guy with or other ingredients. You can create a very powerful formula where we satiolde components of cacao, the nut of cacao. We discovered that was great for the hair for the skin. So we want to create something new for the American market. And we decide that these hero ingredients will be very powerful and new as well.

And you co-founded Saru with dermatologist Dr. Bertha Bound and longtime beauty and healthcare executive Frank Saunders, who I think you might be related to, right? And what in each of you bring to the company? It's very interesting. I actually know Dr. Bertha Bound from Cali. We went to the same school in Cali. We were different ages, different grades, but the school was very small. So we knew each other. And when I decided to create the brand, red support me. He was like, I think it's a great idea. I actually found all the concept, the packaging. And I asked Dr. Bound if she want to co-founded, brought with me. I love her work. I really admire Dr. Bound. I think she's a great dermatologist. She's so good guy. And has a lot of benefits. So she was very happy to be part of the theme as well. Okay, wonderful. So cacao is still unfamiliar to many of us. In fact, I had never heard of it until I met your team, but it's at the center of everything you've created. So let's start at why this oil is now getting so much attention.

I researched and heard that it is being called nature's retinal. So what does that mean in terms of what we should be able to be seeing on our skin when we're using it? Oh, let's go back to cacao. Cacao is an art. The three thick seniors to grow. It grows in the orinokia and the Amazon Colombian Brazil. All in this part of the world. You can grow cacao. Cacao has a lot of amazing components as you mentioned natural retinal. Has a lot of omega and has delta 5. I'm in a settle helps a lot as an anti inflammatory. Okay. And so what changes will we be able to see on our skin when using the oil? It's hydration redness. For example, I use the care oil that I have it right here during my pregnancy. I use it actually has rose mayor. I use it for all the pregnancy and I didn't have any dandruff on the postpartum. So it helps a lot. We're right now doing all the clinical studies as well. And all the skin you can see hydration, improve elasticity.

And it helps cellulitis well, type the skin, but in a natural way. So with cacao you can also use the oil, go to the sun. And you don't have any issue that happens. Sometimes with reddenol. Okay, got it. And what about people who have oily or rosacea prone skin or sensitive skin? Can they use cacao? It's actually amazing because of the delta 5 and esthetic. It helps a lot with rosacea. And it's neat that people cannot use oil. It has oily skin. Our body needs oils. Our skin is made of oil. So we need to use a lot of oil. I use oils every day. I use oils on my hair, on my face, on my body. And I have to say I love it. Every time I read more and more, they said the kids for healthy hair. Actually is oil therapy before washing your hair, followed by double shampoo with the scalp massage. And that is going to help change your hair. You know, Sure. I'm a big believer in the oils as well.

So this is the seru face oil. Excited to talk about this one and bring this to the forefront. Let's talk about this. Can face oil replace a serum remoistriser? Or is it meant to be layered with other products? It meant to be layered. I don't believe intense step routines. And I actually think the better metallurgists teach me that. I do believe that you need to do a good cleansing on your skin. I do zero. I do zero on your skin. And I put hydration on your skin. So you can do the cleaning first, second, the serum that you love. And then you can do cacao oil. And you can alternate with another product at night. And then can we use the cacao oil and then put makeup on? Of course, it's a great actually foundation. I think you always need to moisturize your skin before you use a foundation. So that's actually what I do. For having a glowing skin, a red carpet skin, you use your wash up, be off your skin, you know, and then you always the wash up has to be done

with the oil with an oil always. And then you can follow with your foundation. Let's talk about your personal beauty routine before we dive into the other products. What does your personal morning and nighttime skincare routine look like? Okay, my skincare routine is very simple. I change my products every three months. I do believe in moisturize your body. I moisturize your face the same way. So I actually use moisturized twice a day. I use the cacao oil full body in the morning. When I wake up the first thing I do is I splash my face with Evian water that I actually love it. Followed by a saffron serum that I'm using right now. That I bought in Eropam obsessed with saffron of the skin. And followed by the cacao face oil and then sunscreen. I have to do sunscreen every single day 50 SPS at nine. I've been using req first step. I wash my face, remove my sunscreen. I do req followed by alternate. Sometimes if I use already, see doing the morning, I alternate at night.

I sometimes use a red pinhole that I actually think is really good to use every day. Red pinhole moisturize, I'm using a great yogurt moisturized with probiotic. That I actually love. I've been using and I really like it. And I contour and that's it. And you're the expert because you spend so many years in front of cameras and wearing professional makeup. What have you learned that makes the biggest difference in how our skin looks? Less is more doctor roundies. When you do 10 steps through pinhole you are changing your products constantly or you are overdoing your face. Doesn't work. Less is more if something works, you stay on that, you don't change. And also nutrition. I truly believe the skin is the reflection of what we eat. You know, and so nutrition is extremely important as well. Hydration, nutrition, solution, and so on. I've never had a nutrition is extremely important as well. Hydration, nutrition, sleep, agreed.

Okay, so if you don't mind, I'd love to talk about your gouache tool for a minute because this is the most unique gouache tool I've ever had or been sent. First of all, what's it made out of? I'm going to tell you the story of Balbi's gouache. In 2022, we went to Korea and I suppose to be in Korea for four things. Then get COVID on the day we land in Korea and they were very strict on the COVID regulations there. So instead of spending four days, we have to stay almost two weeks. So I was shopping around, I didn't got COVID, he got COVID, I didn't so I was shopping around to all the Korean pharmacies, all the new skincare products because I was developing C-DUPE. And I found something similar to this but not the same style is ceramic. And I actually fall in love with ceramic and this particular type of gouache because it's big you can do your face cover you had tired face cover your body as well. So I fall in love and with a site to create a marble version, different version of the gouache for zero.

This is costumized for zero has the colors of the brand that are green and 100% ceramic. So it's great because ceramic is antibacterial helps to not get bacteria like some does can happen with wood and also if different that is why that it can break very easy. So these ones I love it is easy to grab you know, yes, I think that there's so much conversation about gouache. There's no way I can log into any of my social channels where somebody's not showing me how to use a gouache because it's everywhere, but I think we're all a little confused right of what it can do whether we're using it correctly. So realistically what can gouache do to change the appearance of our face. So I stimulate your collagen and also helps with the lymphatic drainage so when we sleep we accumulate liquids you know in all our body. So in the morning is really good to stimulate your collagen and helps you with all the lymphatic you can activate the lymphatic lands here with the circles that you have here.

So that's basically what gouache does is stimulate helps also the son to go I feel it like I honestly feel it when I stop doing it dr. Rande for 10 days or something because I'm traveling and I want to be lazy and I start again I feel like my face went through a massage is the same when we do the lymphatic on the body you know we do the body but sometimes we don't do the face of these helps the same way. Yeah and how consistent do we need to be to keep the results from the gouache very consistent is like exercise and food like this is naturally so we something you are helping your body in a natural way. So the most consistent you are the most result you're going to see what is going to be with morning at night you can pass every son for 10 times and then you're going to start seeing the results. And you always have to use an oil with the gouache always because if not you're going to help those lies. Okay got it and are there times when people should avoid gouache like after having injectables or laser or any aesthetic treatment.

Yeah of course if you just have a treatment or any jicktable you don't want to move what they inject on your face but otherwise you can do it with a break this is not a whole conditions that you cannot do wash eyes very safe. Okay and let's talk about what I now know is your hero product of the line for the hair and the scalp right because the face receives a lot of attention but Saru extends the same idea of hydration and glow to the body hair and scalp as well. Right so I'd love to talk about your revitalized hair and scalp oil so let's talk about that and what are we doing differently with this oil than any other products. This product is only five ingredients we have here cacao we have amla we have rosemary and we have our gun so it's only five ingredients but it's not additive is real ingredients so we use this product you see a huge difference on the hydration. All the hair density of the hair as well and when you do for example I do my only therapy and I wash my hair and I do my blood right I see my hair very silky the hydration is amazing and the density.

Okay I just started using it and I can definitely see a difference and you recommend that we put this on the scalp as well right and then you have another tool for the scalp which you sang me which. Yeah move the oil around the secret is being very generous with this product the secret is to divide your hair and you go with a full dropper each session I do the only therapy I do my bond and then I stay for two three hours and then I double wash my hair and when I do the early I always stimulate this call this helps for circulation and also helps in the shower when you have a lot of oil and you do the double shampoo helps to clean the skin. Right and this becomes like a ritual and I love the tools that you have even the cone is so beautiful I mean everything is just it's a pleasure to use it all right because it all is tied in together and it's an experience right. Yes for us where we create Cedar we want to have something that you love to see that you love to have in your bath that is sensorial that you open it smells good but also I want to have something on a price range accessible for the people you know for new customers to try.

We actually just now to be three comes that you may have as well yes the beautiful they're very nice and I told my team I need to have a calm that really divide your hair because sometimes they're very big and you cannot divide your hair so what's very happy with these that I can divide my very easy when I'm doing all my first styles and my only therapy. Yeah and everything is just so easy to use and it's nice to have tools to use it with right so let's talk about your body oil so this is the firm and nourish elixir body oil right. One of the things that I didn't measure dr. Rande I was raised my grandmother since I was very young she always use a lot of different oils as she always use rolls Mary for the hair she used synthetic for the body. She was very to the natural conchana cut for pigmentation so when I create C2 I want to create something that was going through the basis of beauty of natural beauty from generation to generation and that's why every ingredient every product has an ingredient that it makes me feel back to my roots to home.

Yeah so for example cacao of course is from Colombia but the rolls Mary was from my grandmother she always said rolls Mary is the best for the hair. Then the body oil has synthetic that it's very popular in South America and Asia as well has hobo oil that is great for people who has sensitive skin has also a extract of green tea has calendula it's a very powerful formula. This we can use with the gouache on our body as well right yes yes this is the good thing about the gouache you can wrap it here and blow through the leg all the way up. And what kind of results can we see from using gouache on the body. Elulite it's one of the best results because you're activating the circulation and also lymphatic drainage also helps for this let's storm out circulation collagen. Do you use it all over your body the gouache or just in certain parts of the body that you think there's really a stronger effect. I use it much more all the times I think you have to use it where you tend to accumulate more fat you know is depending like some people accumulate more fat on the stomach some of us like for example i'm Latin body so I accumulate more on my tight so I use it more all the stomach and the times because the right of the skin the arms if you need to have a little more on the arms you can also do it on the arms.

But you can spend an hour with these I drive to spend 15 minutes yeah yeah i've seen you're on some social media videos people using these gouache on their stomach and they like sculpt their own abs I mean you know if that's your goal but it does seem like it really works visually if you're consistent with it. It is it is like oh everything like if you eat consistently good it's going to help you if you you know it's like I'm feel like this is very good but also you need to have a good nutrition you have to it's it's it's it's everything. So if someone is completely new to Saru how would you help them decide which product or tool to begin with first. I will start right now it's very interesting question because where we launch Ceto I thought our hero product is going to be the hair oil and they hear industry is growing so fast but people is absolutely loving the body and gwasha. Well I think that for many years and we have this conversation point regularly on the show we were just taking care of our face right and now we're realizing there's a lot of opportunity number one taking care of this whole area here and then taking care of our body.

And now there's skin care for the body right and we're taking better care of our skin and I do think that's the next round of evolution and skin health. I agree and also I feel the red you know in the body is very helpful for pigmentation for skin tone as we age we don't only have pigmentation in the face we have pigmentation in the legs we have pigmentation in the chest in the arms everywhere. So a guide helps a lot with pigmentation it's the studies on scars are unbelievable so it's actually really good on stretch marks so I think people will feel more comfortable if they're new and they want to trust the grant trying something like the body and then if they feel so comfortable the majority of my customers maybe start with one product and then they feel very comfortable and they order the rest of the products no so we have to say it is keen. Start with the body oil see how you feel and then try the hair and then the face as how you feel comfortable. So before we wrap up I want to look at where Saru is today and where you're taking it next.

And if everything you've created so far so you just started talking about some differences with pigmentation I mean what is the most remarkable result that you've seen with the products. Pigmentation is one of the best results also redness on the skin everyone comes with different results I have some clients that they are like wow my Dan Drove it's another story after I started using the hair oil they hear oil really changed my life I don't have any more free side of any more Dan Drove my hair feels amazing. I have other clients that they come and they say I love the body oil because if I stop using the body oil I feel my skin gets so dry right now we're waiting for the clinical studies to be able to say today customers this is true you know this is what he is not only Dr. bomb and me and brain saying these words is also the real sad is that that works. But what I see on myself that I can reassure is my hair was like different story my hair didn't grow three years ago was short they have very little pair they have like really these now I have my hair super long I feel my density change a lot and also it helps me a lot with redness and acne.

And tell us what's next for Daniela and Saru. So the first phase of the brand was creating credibility the people knowing the brand so we focus a lot on press we have a lot of very good press for the ball also mentioned they see the wash has the best of 2026. We have also other magazines coming out soon and now we want to focus more on distribution and sales this is our next step we're going to focus on that part for the brand. Any new products coming into the line yes we're developing a hair mask also went along at lip gloss and we're also talking about more products to launch soon Dr. Randi. Wonderful. Be good but I will thank you for sure amazing amazing it will definitely talk about them and I'll try them so excited. So Daniela I'd love to take you into a few questions it's our speed round but in your case because you are super model we'd love to get your personal advice on a few things ready.

Okay. The rapid fire questions what's the one skincare step you would never skip. Leaning the skin what's the best beauty advice you've ever received. Less is more what's worth splurging on in skin care and beauty longevity what's one beauty habit that you think makes the biggest difference over time. She can feed cons on me. Really. I'll be about to have a minute. I'm sorry bodies through. Is that a Columbia in tradition. No it's actually Korean Asian might have been hated when I do chicken feed cons. Me here he's like what is these and I have to say it's amazing for the skin for your balls for your articulations it's amazing I drink it every morning like tea chicken feed cons. Me with saffron turmeric made out of we let it cook for 24 hours and it's amazing.

Okay there you heard it from the mouth of a super model. All right one beauty product you could not live without the theater. All right. And the worst beauty advice you've ever received in their standard DI. Okay. And don't believe in pillars under the I don't want to blame anyone but I think we are in a new generation that people is trying to do less feelers and more radio frequency more natural approach. Yes. Because they can migrate. They can migrate. Yes absolutely. Okay and what is the ultimate self care indulgence for you at waspade. Okay. What beauty products are always in your handbag. I always travel with my exosome lip balm and I always have as well my seat to calm. Okay. And to wrap up what makes you feel the most beautiful Daniela. My family. My baby she always calls me have preensis like seem the rain lowers no wide so she always make me feel like I'm not these they princess.
