1:04Bruce Branch has actually been one of the hardest evals for me personally. Let's lock in and find out why. You are a locked on NBA draft with no ceilings. I'm joined as always by my co host PhD in the pick and roll and long on style pizza. We've got Corey Telva in the house. And today we've got a really, really exciting pod where we're going to be breaking down. We're going to be breaking down a player who I want to frame this correctly. I'm not saying he's fool's gold. Don't I want to be preemptive about this. I just think he is such a skilled player who aesthetically there are a lot of elements of his game, his physique, the way that he moves on the floor that

2:07gets you really excited and he's very enticing. However, that doesn't mean that he's a finished product. And I think there is some tightening of the screws that needs to happen a little bit with his game overall that I'd like to see. And I think it's going to be a big driving force of our conversation today. But before I sorry, but instead of going through a long thing, let's go right into the lab with our very own professor Telva. Corey, if you could give us the essentials on Bruce Branch. Yes, Bruce Branch. We have a listed BYU has not updated their roster from last year. So this is a ESPN listed at 67 195. And I almost feel like having seen him in person. I might not believe the 195 nor the 67 because it might be taller than 67, but way less than 195. So, but that's what he's listed at. Like I said, headed to BYU via prolific prep where he was a teammate, a Caleb Holt

3:11played for the Compton Magic and his AU season, his last AU season alongside Duke's Cam Williams. He will be 18.65 years old on draft night. So this is a very young prospect who reclast from the class of 27 to the class of 26. And you know, had a pretty interesting statistical season for for prolific prep. Synergy has 26 games tracked. He averaged around 16.7 rebounds to and a half assists to 2.4 turnovers, two steals 0.7 blocks, 56.3 true shooting on 28.6% from 3 and 68.4% from the free throw line. And it almost feels like, you know, like you mentioned so much, the, the screws need to be tightened. You mentioned a lot of how smooth his game is, his movement patterns are outrageous. Just like this dude looks like he looks the way you want to move as a basketball player.

4:12Like you probably don't move like him, but when you're on at LA fitness or lifetime or whatever and you're like by yourself, you know, getting shots up and you're doing busing out your combos, you think you look like this, but you don't like he looks like how everybody wants to look and how everyone wants to move. It's just like. You need to tighten some of the screws and part of it is like his shot is really nice. It looks really nice, right? Like nice balance base like nice shot prep off the catch hops into it generates power from like a pretty good me bend, right? Like good synergy from his base through his release, you know, high release, get some good elevation. He's comfortable shooting off the bounce, you know, the one thing there's like a slight like lean back as he goes in the air with his posture and how he lands, but nothing crazy. Everything looks good. He just hasn't found sustained success, but like if you catch him on the right game, you're like, oh my god, like this dude is an unbelievable prospect.

5:18He, I remember when we were at hoop summit and seeing him go, oh my god, like when he gets wide. He looks like a condor with that length and like he just looked really big and like he takes up a ton of space on the floor. And just his movement is so impressive, especially compared to like some of the prospects in this class definitely needs to get stronger. You know, because he is lean. But his finesse game is just really aesthetically pleasing. It's just like. You know, there's a lot of million dollar move 10 cent finishes and that's affected. Some of his efficiency numbers because you know, he's not somebody who gets to the line a ton. You know, he much prefers to win on skill and finesse instead of like going into a body when he does go into a body, he does finish through contact. Like he finished 70% at the rim. Percentry during his senior season at prolific and a lot of those finishes are are through contact.

6:23Like, you know, there's some impressive stuff. So he doesn't necessarily miss at the rim, but a lot of the outside shots and then the free throw line consistently being some sub 70% and three point numbers consistently being under 30%. So rebro had both of those tracked over his entire, you know, I think last three or four years. And those are consistent things. So like he really needs to put in some work. But man, like I am pretty stoked to watch him this year. You said how tough it is at the at the top and the cold open of an evil he is. And after seeing him at Hoops Summit and just going like, man, I really like his game. But I don't know. I did leave a little bit more optimistic having watched him in different contexts from a you to prolific prep team USA. And then, you know, we have the context of of seeing him behind the scenes and practices and stuff. He's somebody despite the fact that it doesn't feel complete. It feels like there's so much there that it's intriguing that I'm willing to be more patient before I make a definitive decision about whether or not he is a guy that is a one and done or like, maybe he's going to bust out like initially when I came in, I was like, this feels like the Cody Williams prospect to me.

7:37Where it's like it all looks cool. There's tools, there's measurables, but I don't know if it all if he puts it all together. But I think he has more than Cody did at the same point. So I'm pretty optimistic despite the fact that I just don't know what the production is going to look like. He's stepping in as, you know, the guy after AJ DePonza at BYU. And I think he could do some of the stuff that AJ does, but clearly, you know, not many people can do all of the things that AJ can do and handle that kind of workload. So I'm going to be interested to see how BYU utilizes him because the playmaking is cool. You know, like he's a good decision maker. He shows some flashes in the pick and roll. I don't know. There's a lot to he rebounds like hits the offensive glass. I they're defensively, you know, we'll talk about later. But I don't know. There's a lot to like. It's just like. There's also a lot to question and it's hard. Almost for me to question some of the stuff because I'm like, I don't even know where to write his weaknesses down other than the shots don't go in sometimes because he can do a little.

8:38He kind of do everything. Yeah, I don't know. For me, so you touched on so many points that I wanted to make and one thing that I really resonate with is. He feels like a guy who's like super tapped in. And what I mean by that is like, he seems like a guy who like understands the game. And when I mean the game, and I'm not talking about basketball, like he understands what NBA front offices are looking for. And he was like, I'm just going to leverage all of that and have all those different aspects in my game because I was given this God given size and length and coordination and fluidity and athleticism that. You know, 99.9% of the world just doesn't have, right? And so I feel like he's like, oh, I get one NBA teams want from a modern day wing. So let me just try to do all of it. A couple of things that I had in my notes, the jumper looks kind of like Tatum's just like aesthetically kind of looks like his. The issue is, I think he's lacking some touch.

9:39You mentioned the efficiency numbers. That's real. On film to some of his misses are bricks like hard hard bricks. And my memory of him at Hoops Summit is that there was a period where I was watching him shoot and he just could not make one. Yeah. And I was just like, this is frustrating. I think I'm sure it's on the far court at the big carabell lasers practice facility, you know, the NBA practice facilities. They have the double court next to each other. And yeah, the guys were just shooting around on the opposite. And I just got. Well, one of them's got a drop, right? Because I, but I think it's such an important point that you're making, because when you watch him shoot, you watch the motion, you mentioned the balance, the kinetic chain. All of it looks great, but it doesn't go in a lot. And I think it's because there's a touch issue here. And I don't know how much that gets better. That's something we're going to have to keep an eye on around the rim. You mentioned how there's a desire to be more finesse.

10:41I want to give you credit like you did where he had some nice finishes through contact. However, also sometimes he'll get so overwhelmed and overpowered that he looks like a fish, just kind of flopping limbs all over some really messy looking finishes that, you know, to his credit leads to the free throw line. But it's something that I think for him to once he gets to his, you know, final form and he reaches his ceiling, he's going to have to add a good amount of strength and mass. I think that's something that has to be on the docket for him, not to say that I think he needs to add 30, 40 pounds, because then, you know, that'll take away from some of the fluidity blah, blah, blah. But he's got to add a little bit more and embrace a little bit more and initiate a little bit more is kind of what I hope for him. With that being said, he's a long leash guy, like 100%. This is a guy that you're going to as much as he's the type of guy because of his skill set and because of his build. You'll find yourself trending to like ignore some of the warts more than highlight them and it's because you see a guy with his frame and with his ability and you go, this has to work.

11:50And God, I hate to make this comparison because I wanted to talk about it later, but it just makes sense to bring it up here. But there was a reason why Cam Reddish fans held on to hope as long as they did. And with Cam, it was like this idea of like he's your hooper's hooper six eight long fear. Redically supposed to be this great shooter. So smooth with the ball in his hands. He got a very, very long leash didn't end up working out for him. You mentioned Cody Williams. I think that's another great example who just got traded. But a guy when we watched him as summer league this year, we were intrigued and we're like, there's some development here. And we want to give him credit for that. Which he needed to because it was also his third. Right. Yes. But I think with Bruce, even if he's not ready to rock in year one of his NBA career, he's got all the stuff that will make an NBA front office go. We got to give him time. We got to give him more opportunity. We got to wait on him because there's the building blocks are so strong and exciting that you're rooting for him to work and you want him to figure it out.

12:54And he's very lucky in that way. He's kind of where I'm landing right now. Yeah. And you know, like one of Cody's things is that he kind of like can float, you know, and I don't know. It's weird. Like Bruce branch doesn't have like an insane motor. I don't think what he plays hard. So like I went when I say he doesn't have an insane motor. It's just like a comparison to somebody who's like always going around. I do wish that I do wish that like he wouldn't float so much. When he's not in like a featured role, you know, like even at prolific, you know, if Caleb Holt is the guy there. He's still featured as like the number two guy, right? On the comp to magic, he's the featured guy. When you watch like the Phoebe stuff, it did feel at times like maybe he got lost in like the shuffle of all the ball handlers. But yeah, I went back to my notes from Hoops Summit and I wrote down like he's done a nice job of filling in the gaps and doing the little things.

13:54And he was not impactful in the game. I think you had two shots, you know, but I'm I really like watching the practices and taking away a lot of stuff. Yeah, from those when we go. It did feel a little bit like there's opportunities for him to like kind of cut a little bit more often instead of just space. But but ultimately I do think he's like somebody who has the skills to kind of. Transition between on and off ball stuff and fit in and fill in gaps on teams where maybe he's not the first or the second option. And like you said, he's going to have a long leash to kind of. I think he could kind of thrive in that role. And ultimately, I think maybe like a number three option might might be his ideal role, even at some point, similar to how you know we covered modest Buselle's on the no ceilings NBA show. To where it's like, oh, maybe he like. Modus is one of the best three number three is in the league. Maybe he's, you know, he can watch Macal Bridges or you know and take that trajectory, whatever like and fill in the gaps.

14:57And yeah, if you gave him his own team, he could score 20, but like is he going to be the most impactful there? I feel like Bruce Branch is kind of like in that zone as far as where I want him in role. I'm excited to see what it looks like, you know, in a primary option at BYU in an NBA style offense. But yeah, there, there is just a lot to like there. And I think even on the other side of the ball, which we'll talk about, which I think gives him almost like a higher floor than somebody who maybe does have some gaps to fill. Yeah. Yeah. No, 100% or just really quickly before we move on. I just want to say I love the point that you make about him being like an ideal elite third option because one thing that I don't think we talked about. Yeah, I think he's a really smart savvy cutter as well. Like watching some of the fee bus stuff, he had a couple really easy buckets just moving and timing his cuts really well and being a gigantic target with really long arms. Like that's definitely to his benefit and you know, he's good in transition as well.

15:58So there's there's a lot there that could benefit him in that type of tertiary role, which would really accentuate some of his strengths and kind of help him to. Be successful without having to be the guy. So I think I think that'll be great for him. But with that being said, there's a lot to Bruce branch defense that we want to get into that we want to get into as well. And we will right after the break. 18:06All right, guys, we are back and we're feeling cozy talking about Bruce branches overall game. And we're going to get into his defense now. And I think as you were all we're alluding to, why was that so hard to say just now? We're alluding to there's some really enticing stuff with the defense. So Corey, if you can, give us your initial scout on Bruce branches defense. Yeah, well, I mentioned it in the first segment, but when he gets long, he looks huge, man. Like he just looks like he takes up so much space and it does show on the film. But like seeing it up close, I really was like, oh, like it looks different than even the top guys that are on court. Yeah. And I think he does a really good job using that. Like I think he's a really fluid, strong lateral mover who really like does a good job. It makes a concerted effort to like be in a stance on the ball and get long, get wide, get low. Really smoothly flips his hips, can mirror ball handlers, utilizes like a full extension on contests to make it like guys really have to shoot over him.

19:14And he has like good timing on that. I think he could stick with like quicker guards like you could switch him, right? Like and he's cool. Like you don't have to worry about that. And obviously he could do that with wings too. And I, you know, he even guarded up in some of the games that I saw him was like guarding fours. I do think like stronger dudes. Like he's not ready for that smoke. Like the physicality of switching on to a five. He does have like a, I think a really nice standing reach. Like when he gets like, you know, he bodies up on the ground and just puts his hands up. But like even still like dudes can just like move him off his spot because he doesn't have strength to win the physicality battle. But overall, I was really impressed by his defense. And you know, he's one of those guys where in high school, it's almost like guys are going to avoid having to have him guard, you know, like you're not going to go at Bruce Branch. You're not going to go at Caleb whole, you're going to try to go at some of the other guys. So it's like you might not see a million possessions of him guarding on the ball.

20:15But when he does and guys are trying to like go at him, like I think he's filthy as a defender. Now with that said, like I also don't think he is like the most aggressive on ball defender. I think he is more reactionary rather than like aggressively trying to dictate the possession and kind of make guys make decisions. He's just so good at like mirroring the ball that he's cool with kind of like playing a little bit more contained defense and just forcing guys into bad shots rather than trying to be like super disruptive. And like get up in like and he gets like he gets up into their space. He's just not like in their shirt necessarily, you know, like some guys can be. But I really like to Zombal defense and then off the ball. When he is time to like kind of like he sees somebody approaching him one on one. He's got really good timing to like get up and like block a shot, like whether that's in transition or just kind of like somebody rotated over. I thought he did a really good job keeping his head on a swivel being in the right spot as the low man.

21:19I don't really have anything negative to say about him defensively. Other than it does feel like there's opportunity for him to be a little bit more aggressive at times, especially when maybe he isn't carrying the low to the offense. And being more of like like a stopper at times rather than just like when the ball swings and his man is trying to go at him, he's he's good. He's solid. But that's really it. I think he's pretty solid. I don't you know, obviously the strength is going to be a big issue at the next levels. College keeps getting older. God knows how long the judges who want their the players in their state to play for their team are going to keep allowing these guys to play for. And the older college basketball gets the more physical it's going to get. And obviously Bruce Branch, his goal is to be one and done. I'm assuming so getting to that level. He's that strength is going to be a real issue. You know, there's a lot of really strong dudes who play on the wing.

22:23But I do think he's got a good frame. We talk about how much bigger he looks in person. He is lean, but he's not like comparatively. We also saw so Boba, a lot of two. You know, for team world, who I think is really interesting to, but like he was really lean really skinny and like Bruce Branch isn't that. He's just he reclast up, you know, like he's young and his body is going to take some time to get there just because. You can't you know rush the clock on that stuff necessarily when when you're built like him. But yeah, I really like this defense. Yeah, no, I think for me, the first thing that I have in my notes is I thought fundamentally he was really sound as a defender doing all the stuff that you want playing a really smart, and you mentioned how off ball keeps his head on a swivel. You can really see that with how he's reading the floor, how he's reacting, even as a lowman reading things early, getting to spots early.

23:23And the thing with him that I noticed, especially on the ball, I felt like he was really conservative about, and you mentioned like the aggression thing. And I wonder if there might be two things to that. I'm wondering if he was like kind of the YIN to Caleb Holt's Yang where Caleb Holt being so aggressive as a defender. And Bruce was kind of like I'm going to be maybe a little opportunistic off of that aggression because there were a lot of possessions where Caleb would just like wall a guy off, be physical, force a bad pass. And then Bruce would be the beneficiary off of that. And I was like maybe four or five of those that I that I counted while watching them playing together at prolific. And I'm just wondering if he was playing off of that a little bit, but just even like the way he closes out on shooters. I thought he did a really good job. Choppy feet not going too wild and too crazy. Very controlled closeouts just on it. But I think all of that is because he knows how hard it is to get a shot off of him with his length. A lot of blocked jumpers on his film as well, which is you know hard to do closing out on threes blocking those in the mid range blocking mid range jumpers just a lot of really freaky stuff with the length that he has that is not normal.

24:35And I think he kind of has an understanding of that a little bit, but to your point, I do think a little bit more aggression would help also interestingly enough. I actually and you mentioned how if like a guy's way bigger than him that he will get moved blah blah blah that's to be expected. But I thought he embraced physicality and also even showed a little bit more physicality on the defensive side than he did on the offensive end. Like it looked a little bit better defensively to me than I was expecting where like you'd even see him like wall off a guy get his chest into them. And I was like, oh this is good. And then him knowing that he's got the length to like cut off passing lanes and stuff. So I just yeah and you mentioned the lateral movement stuff like I forgot I think it was the team was named like crown or something is like a small school I'd never heard of. But you know he got switched on to their point guard a couple of times in the way you mentioned the shadowing stuff like his ability to stay in front of that small guard. And who was quick I have no idea who that guard is who probably never play division one.

25:38I don't know but he was quick and Bruce was moving with him flipping his hips just staying on top of him on all times it was really impressive stuff. So I just want to echo a lot of the stuff that you said but I just you know defensively the floor is super high with him. And the ceiling is high as well as he continues to fill out that frame and you know has the instincts and the length that he has some really really exciting stuff. But with that in mind his offense and his defense has us thinking about some potential NBA pros will get into those comps right after the break. All right guys we are back and we are you know we're getting into our bread and butter we're getting into comps and we're doing some NBA comps for Bruce Branch and there are a lot of different guys that are coming to mind long range multi faceted wings so I can't wait to hear who you have comped for him Corey. Okay so you know initially I did throw on like Cam Reddish which is not like a one to one like stylistic comp although I think there are some similarities but I kind of like think I'm going to like Bruce Branch's game more than Cam's game. Cam did feel a little more like fools gold to me.

28:43At least you know after watching a madook obviously you know we got to see what Bruce's college season looks like. I put down carousel vert. As like a stylistic comp I think Bruce Branch is taller than him but like the way that they get to their spots and score I think is interesting carousel is like good defender in college and you know. I thought carousel vert stylistically was kind of an interesting one because I do think Bruce has some like guard skills. Guys like Harrison Barnes and DeAndre Hunter as like what it could look like in like more of a down the line kind of roll body feels out a little bit like Harrison Barnes you know champion you know a guy who's played with Jillian years DeAndre Hunter. You know top five pick one a national championship in college you know as dealt with injuries and but you know was a good NBA player even if he's not like an all star level guy.

29:46And then lastly like kind of the shot never comes around. Like Julian Phillips where it's like he's going to do cool stuff as a defender and as an athlete but like the shots not going in what is his value really do an offense and it's his you know the defense is like is cool. But is it going to be good enough to you know kind of get him on the floor I don't think I think that he's going to be a better player than Julian Phillips but just as like a lower end comp if it doesn't necessarily work out in that world it was kind of just a guy that I thought maybe there's some similarities to. Yeah I think all that's fair the Julian Phillips one I think would hurt right if he ended up in that mold and be like man like things really didn't work out for Bruce branch but it's possible right like all that stuff is possible yeah it's possible it's hard to NBA's hard to it's hard to stick you know it's easier when you have his kind of you know build and you know kind of movement patterns but.

30:54Just a lot of talent in the league yeah I mentioned camera dish before just because like camera was such a smooth operator and it's like if he just cared more it was like a little locked in and wanted to be great like I just wonder what his career might have looked like but I don't know there's there are a lot of issues there. I just wonder like okay he's never shot it you know in terms of his efficiency sub 70 from the free throw line blah blah blah like what is the worst possible. I thought I thought about absolutely I thought of like rendez-hull is Jefferson like is like absolutely that would be the nightmare scenario for Bruce branch like could that happen I like I love the point that you made earlier that I think he should mold his game after like a Maccal bridges I think that would be a great great scenario for him yeah I and I know this not like a one for one comp but I'm wondering like is there some JD McDaniels that he can tap into and the NBA like being an elite defend.

31:54I think I'm just wondering growing as a shooter you know just using his size and measurable and athleticism to be a really impactful NBA player I think for me I'm. Man like I know it's easy to with with his toolbox and his skill set to be like yeah chase the Jason Tatum dream blah blah blah but just I wonder if realistically he'll end up more of like the Maccal bridges. Daniels type is kind of where I'm landing. Yeah and I. Maccal they ton of money want to champ I mean he's a hot champion college champion in the pros you know like multiple finals appearances for him like winner like that is an incredible outcome for your career right like. And I can totally see that because both like skinny you know but Maccal's tough tough you know like he's he even though he he's going to give up some. Some mass at times like he's going to play with his Cality and as you mentioned defensively you know big time you know maybe that doesn't show up with Maccal on the like on the offensive side but it does defensively and I think you you know you mentioned how you can kind of see that.

33:03In Bruce's game too so I think you know maybe maybe substituting like the Andre Hunter Harrison Barnes for like a Maccal bridges is like a slightly higher end there like if he's not reading reaching like the Tatum outcome. Because he. He does move like him at times you know like and we'll see how his body feels out but yeah I think that like Maccal would be a cool like top in. Because also like Maccal's like a good like a really good athlete but he's not like a crazy vertical pop guy and neither is Bruce branch like he does he's not like crazy quick twitch so I mean it's a cool. Yeah absolutely but with that in mind a lot to like about Bruce branches game we're going to be watching a ton of it at BYU and we'll be back next week with more interesting content thank you as always for rocking with us my name's Albert he's Corey.
