Irish Bookkeeper Wins £23K in Racial Harassment Case

0:00On March 10th, a 55-year-old Irish bookkeeper has won more than 23,000 pounds from an employment tribunal after her boss, racially harassed her by repeatedly shouting the word potato in a thick Irish accent. The harassment happened at West Leeds, Civils, an engineering firm in Holbeck from December 2023 through June 2024. The director, Mick Atkins, also made other race-linked remarks that the judge called offensive and humiliating, Hayes told the tribunal that the taunts made her feel small, anxious, and eroded her confidence, especially after Atkins' friend got involved in the business. She complained multiple times that she did not find it funny, though she occasionally played along to fit in. The judge ruled the behavior created a hostile work environment tied directly to her Irish heritage, leading to her stress-related sick leave in July, 2024, an eventual dismissal. She received 20,735 pounds, 91 pence, plus 4 weeks pay worth 2,800 pounds.
