Iran strikes spark LA demonstrations, CA Congressmembers demand Iran oversight, Actors Awards winners— Morning Edition

Demonstrators hit the streets in LA with some denouncing, and others celebrating the strikes in Iran. We've been waiting for this moment for 47 years. But California lawmakers say the president needs to be reigned in. He has not made the case to Congress. He's sought no authorization. And the LA Unified School Board returns to closed door meetings over the fate of superintendent Alberto Carvalo.

1:06Good morning. It's Monday, March 2nd. I'm Adolfo Luis Manlópez, I'm Boston Cross. And this is the LA Report from LA News. Nationwide demonstrations are scheduled today against the U.S. led attacks on Iran. In Southern California, they're set to take place at LA City Hall, the Cesar Chavez Memorial in Riverside, the Reagan Federal Building in Santa Ana and the Ventura Government Center. But yesterday, in Westwood, thousands of LA area Iranians hit the streets to show support for the strikes and celebrate the death of Iran's Theocratic leader. Our media partner CBS LA spoke to one of the unnamed demonstrators. We've been waiting for this moment for 47 years. And finally, there is a president in the office to actually listen and did something about it. Despite their joys, some acknowledge there's still uncertainty as to who will assume leadership in Iran. Meanwhile, California elected leaders are reacting to the strikes. LA Representative Jimmy Gomez says Congress must assert its authority and bring the war power's

2:12resolution to the House floor. U.S. Senator Adam Schiff tells CNN that President Trump made the wrong decision. He has not made the case to the American people. He has not made the case to Congress. He sought no authorization. And he hasn't made the case because there was no imminent threat from Iran. They were not in the process of rebuilding their nuclear program or building a bomb. Congressmember Darrell Issa supports the strikes as does inland empire Congress member Ken Calvert, who says they're necessary to count Iran's nuclear ambitions. The LA unified school board returns to closed-door meetings this morning over superintendent Alberto Carvalo's employment. He's currently on paid leave following FBI raids on his home and office. Carvalo just handed new for your contract. Because of that, Loyola laws Jessica Levinson tells our media partner CBSLA that it would be a challenge to fire him right now. At this point, prior to any sort of case being filed, obviously, prior to any guilty plea or conviction, then you're in a place where you're trying to show that

3:17there's malfeasance, but you don't have the criminal justice system to essentially back you up. If Carvalo is fired without cause, he'd still be owed his full $440,000 annual salary. Nurses at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank are set to hit the picket lines this morning for a five day strike union leaders. Say the nurses have been bargaining for a new contract in September. They say they're negotiating for increased levels of staffing and to protect their health benefits. Providence, as it has bargained in good faith, it's bringing in nurses from an outside agency to make sure operations are not interrupted. And the actor goes to... Sinners!

5:20Sinners took home the top prize at the actor awards last night, formerly known as a SAG awards. It won Best Ensemble and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Hamnet, Actress, Jesse Buckley, One Best Actress. On the TV side Seth Rogan and the late Catherine O'Hara won for their roles in the studio, which also took home Best Comedy Series.
