Iran Spying Case: London Surveillance Charges

0:00On March 19th, two men face charges for allegedly spying on behalf of Iran by surveilling Jewish and Israeli sites across London. Forty-year-old Nematola Shasavani, a British Iranian delivery driver, and 22-year-old Ali Reza Farasati, an Iranian national, are accused of. Gathering information from July 9th to August 15th, last year, prosecutors say their actions could have helped a foreign intelligence service, violating the National Security Act of 2023. Shasavani reportedly identified targets and tasked Farasati with the surveillance. Key spots included the Israeli Embassy in Kensington, Britain's oldest synagogue at Beavis Marks, the JW3 Community Center in Finchley, and sites, like schools, a museum, and the Community Security Trust Charity. Officials also mentioned a woman in the UK suspected of most at-ties as a possible target. The men have lived in North London for years, Shasavani since 2009 and Farasati since 2021.

1:01Shasavani traveled to Iran in April last year and faced terrorism act questioning upon return in August. Investigators believe he received instructions there, linking their UK activities to Iranian intelligence. They appeared together at Westminster Magistrate's Court on Thursday, confirming details but entering no pleas. Farasati's lawyer said he plans to contest the charge. Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring, remanded both in custody since their March 6th arrests in the countertaire probe, two others were released without, charge. The case heads to the Old Bailey on April 17th as authorities continue probing threats to UK communities.
