Have you come to the bar? Yes. Yeah, all together, 35. Me, me, me, Dave Chappelle and Martin Met at the same time at the same club. And we all went to Hollywood about 35 years ago.

3:04Wow. And I got my show. He got his show. I got my movie. He got his movie. And that's all we were, that's all we were in for play. I mean, he moved to apartments that I lived in. My kids called him Uncle Martin. I know his family. You know, so we got really close over those years, like brother, you know. And finally, we did a project together, executive producing together. Wow. I was watching a BET this weekend and they replayed the original Barna Hill episode from Martin. Were there ever any talks after that episode of making that a spin-off? No. No, no, no. The idea came from kid, from kid to kid in play. OK. Oh, yeah, no kid, everybody. And he called me upset about late night TV. He was like, hey, man, we don't got no talent coming on TV at all, you know, with the two Jimmy's. He said, why don't you call Martin and ask him to do that Barna Hill show as a TV show,

4:09but it's really a late night talk show. Wow. Wow. And so we got it. It's a sitcom about a television show that is a television show. So at the end, we have just like in living color, we get our performances, you know, October London, Kirk Franklin, killing it. Yeah, I see Dougie fresh isn't it as well? Yeah, Dougie's my MC. Yeah, I think that's the, that's really, really dope. Yeah, so we put it together. It's not hitting me yet. It's not hitting me yet. No, no, it's not hitting me yet. What do you mean? You don't feel like it's almost like, like I'm ready to get the work. I'm ready to get the work, but we'll be able to watch it for a whole season before they say, hey, we're going to keep this thing going. You know what I mean? But I guess it's hitting me. What were some of the challenges making it? Actually bringing it to life. Actually bringing it to life. I actually had to do two episodes a week, which was really hard because I had to remember

5:12two scripts. I had to think, which I learned how to do over the years. So usually when I did a movie, to not forget my lines, I remembered everybody's line. You know what I mean? I knew everybody's line. So I wouldn't, you know what I mean? So I'm kind of used to it. But it was a challenge I drove from where I lived every day at 4 a.m. And left the studio about one and then did it again. And I did that for two weeks, but we got through it. I mean, there was a job at the end of this. That's a lot at your age, I'm sure. Oh yeah. Yeah. I mean, I'm at the age. I don't know if I can, you know, do number one or two. I just go to the bathroom. It's going to happen. Nature call. You know what? It's something happened. You need to call. You know what? You don't have to pick up that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You know, you wish you was in a monster truck. You're in traffic, you know what I mean? He's a monster truck, man.

6:12Oh my God. So you know, how does it feel to go? It made watching episodes and made me feel like back in the 90s. Yeah. Was that on purpose? Because it feels like the Martin's the, that's the, that's the laugh traps, the way it is, the, just the way you watch it makes it feel like that. It turned into that because everybody showed up. The end living color set was like these said Bruce Willis, Danielle, everybody on a Friday, right? Yeah. Everybody was coming to the show. Light. You know, uh, uh, uh, Jalil White. Everybody was just coming just to hang. Uh, Ralphie Elcidic just everybody was coming to just be around that energy, you know, and everybody know everybody who came knows that they're a part of the show too. This is a combination of our senior hall meets in living color meets Martin. Hmm. You know, so me and Martin, Martin come on to characters and Damon's doing characters, sketches within the show.

7:12You know, so everybody's coming in and doing their thing, man. It's really, really unique in that way. I love that. I love seeing Damon in it. I thought that was a good girl. You also got Mike Epps, the uncle, and his pet, and some, some killers in there. Yeah. Everybody wants to be a part of it because they know what it is. They know we're going to go hard. Yeah. You know what I mean? Yeah. And Wendy Rukow. And Wendy Yeb, she's doing her thing. Yeah. And Kim. Yeah, Kim. And then there's some new actors that are unbelievable. You have to email you, Hudson. Yeah, email, Hudson. That's my man. You like that, so. Yeah. Yes, yes. We're with the names. Yeah. I know her hair is in shit. I didn't tell you to get on the show. Um, I don't know. But you know, I know. But I know you're on there. Yeah. I get on the show. You know what I mean? It's like, it happened. Yeah. It happened seven years, man. Seven years from the day the kid called me to now. The kid getting a production credit for that? Oh, no. Damn. What did you put into the vinyl? You got your heart. I'm going to have a little bit of this. You're a part of it. Damn. Yeah. I'm just trying to. Yeah.

Because when we were being him lined up, I went into that. I win into that deck on show, man. And I was like. So he was like, I'm come out. You know. You know you on my show, right. You know you on my show, I'm like, yeah. I know I'm on your show, man. You know, I got a show. He said, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So bring it. Bring it, bring it. So I brought. happening on this show. The same things happening on this show, man. We did a scene and he was crying. Like, he had these boys, right? And I started going down the line, you know, calling them different names and blah, like this and everything. And he's supposed to be playing his gangster.

9:12And he was trying to keep his straight face. And he was like, and literal tears were rolled it all down his cheek. It was like, it was like a mix of joy. And it was harder to describe, you know what I mean? Just us being there. Because we went through all the ups and downs, man. We, there was a comedy club called the Comedy Act Theatre. And that's where everybody went. That was Robin Harris' join, right? So everybody was there. It was the hottest in LA. You know, it was so far back that the Raiders were winning Super Bowls. So wow. Yeah. So that's just reference. And we were out in the park a lot. We were crying because the owner wouldn't put us on stage the night the Spike Lee came to cast, do the right thing. And that was our shot, you know what I mean? And he got the movie. Yeah. He definitely got that movie. And that was his start. And then I got my movie, strictly business.

10:15Which speaking of puff, you know, I'll just put that out there. Yeah, for the algorithm. Well, puff had to do a series of business. It's puff was my assistant. It's for the movie. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, he was Andre. He was Andre's. He was Andre's protégé, right? So he was to take me around all the clubs and show me all the acts. And I was like, this guy is smartest. Like he went around and he showed me black sheep. He's like, they're going to blow up. He went and said, this is this is a new school. People are thinking it's going to be C Brown. Oh, okay, okay. People are thinking it's going to be C Brown. I think it's going to be Buster. Like he would give me this whole analysis. But what he told me was one day was he said, you're going to have to cut your peak. Oh, yeah. And I was like, I was like, I ain't cutting my peak, man. I said, you know, this is my signature. He said, if you don't cut that, it's going to look big on the screen. I was like, get out of here. And then I was at premiere like, he was right.

11:18My head is like a shark fan. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He was right. Hello, cool to you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He was right. Brilliant. Me, him and a guy named Craig Boogie and Heavy. Why did you get fired? Didn't he get fired from that job? Yeah, because he punched one of the teamsters. It wasn't really even a punch. It was just kind of like a nick. Oh, I thought you was going to say, because it was because of your peak. No, the guy, you know, New York, some teamsters was like, you can't put your car here. And he's like, hey, man, I'm just dropping this guy off of him. Look, I'm a citizen. I'm putting his bags in the trailer. Get it out of here. Get it out of here. And he leaned in a little bit too close and probably said, bad. And, you know, what happened to the tough guy? You know, you got taken away in a whole nine yards. Well, he locked up for that too. Yeah, he had taken away. I went and got him. Get the belt on. He went up four in the morning down to 21st and they're precinct right down there.

12:20And he called me, man, Russ wouldn't get him. Andre wouldn't come down here. I know what he was going to give him. Nobody was coming down. They'll forget him. They would be doing it all over the place. You know, what ever the regularly regular behavior to them. Yeah, you know, man, did he do it again? Yeah, so, so, so that's how I come down there. Not knowing if I was even going to be able to get him out of there. I just went, and it was harder to get in touch with people back then. Yeah, yeah, for sure. For sure. Yeah, but when I went down there, they were cool. Yeah, and living color was at his highest. Okay, gosh. They were there. It was a big one. Yeah, it was a big, that was a big saving private Ryan once. Yeah, four, five, six coordinates. Five, one, one, one, one, one, one, one. You know, yeah. You know, I had one everybody had a brick. And they were talking about how did he was trying to be bishops and juice, but he didn't get it.

14:20They wouldn't let him come on and set the tribe because of the incident that happened on asset. They were like, they didn't want to set the be like crazy. Hmm. Oh. Maybe so. Maybe so. He was jumping in. You know, when I was going around to the clubs, a red parrot, Octagon, the building. You know, those were the spots. And I was in New York at that time when everything was... So when he came, when Puff came out with, by the time that boy remix came out. And I saw that video. I was like, he's going to blow. What's the remix? Was that you said that? Yeah. Yeah. The bat. Flaming your... Flaming your air remix. When I saw that video, I was like, he's gone. Oh, yeah. I was like, he gone. You know, it just matter. No boos in that street. That's true. Yeah. He massed away, ran some notes, gave him handsome beginning. Abel, Abel, the road's roads is sticking in the woods. He loved that a lot. I was like, yeah. That was your whack. He hit that much. 16:21I ain't on IG. You know, I can't keep up with Facebook. I'm just me. And you're not trying to get bored up to this time. Yeah, man. I'm in between. Yeah. I'm in between. My GPS works. My GPS works. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But sometimes it don't. And if it ain't, and I'm done, you know, but it's really about what's changing so fast. What's changing so fast and not just not only just technical, you know what I mean. But for entertainment. So that the ability to have a show where you have, you know, the sketch show. You actually have a sketch show now. And people ain't getting upset about the about the subject matter, you know, and you have live performances of people coming out there and doing it. You ain't got to wait till the BET awards. Yeah. You know what I mean? Yeah, you all you got to do is wait for the end of the end of the color. You're going to see a new group.

17:21You know, Chris Cross and every time. So this is that opportunity that we have for that. And then we go on Bukwaw. You know, we, you know, the director just said, well, just, you know, like Kenan, he just said, well, this one's yours. Just go ahead and take it. You know, is that you're not there? It's not there. No good. No, it's an old entertainer trying to stay relevant, right? In the world that changes around him. How much of, I guess, Barnel's insecurity is actually yours as well. All of it. All of it really. Like, what the hell are we doing in here? You know, you guys, I, you know, I got an idea. I'm like, hey, what do you got an idea about? Everybody can roast me. Don't know. 18:21What we do with this, you know, with the network saying and what all the notes that we're getting and all of this thing. Yeah. And staying out of the politics, but still standing in it and all those things are there. So you get to see the operation of the show from the time that we start in the morning until we go to camera and we follow them home. Yeah. You know, that's the real dope. I wanted to ask you about the Martin episode, the Von Now Hill episode, right? So when you come up to the radio station and you had WZUP with Martin and you lose up, we got a lake out back, you know, a campus. Yeah. Yeah. That was improv that had to let you just go. All of it. Yeah. Because how do you write for James? He knew what he was getting. Yeah. He knew what he was getting. Yeah. He had to bring character a few times. Yeah. But his script's a real though when he was going when he was going for his. Yeah. So he's going for his, you know, yeah, yeah, all right. You got to pull, man. You got to pull a lake. I got a lake. It's called Lake Varnel. Um, um, catfish delicious.

19:23You know, everything became iconic, man. Everything became iconic. So we got the singing contest with the Varnel thing. But the most important part of Varnel to me is that it stayed and everyone's living room for like 30 years. Yeah. Like people grew with this dude, man. You know, they, they, it's somebody they, they come to know. Yeah. You know, now when Miss Pat and Mike Epps and and the bell and them came to, um, to roast me. They roasted me. Yeah. And I was the bell profit. Oh, yeah. Oh, man. And they wrote me. I know him and miss that was the dead same time. Ain't enough room in the world. Jesus. I'm actually so next to we shall. I'm so old. How hard was that to get all those niggas cleared? And it wasn't hard at all really. But as a 22-year-old how do you introduce him to that character to make it a fresh start? So we thought we was gonna get thrown out. That's natural and he said something that I never forget he told me a man We put that chicken there so you guys can have it You guys don't have to take it Because we put it there for you This is there for you He put it there for right, you know, I mean so when I watch It's natural. It's natural to to want to do what you do at the highest level, but you just can't do it all the time A lot of people in this business man, and a lot of people and now the social media is here too You know, it's just all on like popcorn, but you know if as long as you're working

25:48You know, and as long as you're being true to yourself, you know, then it'll come Yeah, it'll come, but man Patience without faith Man, that's a long wait. That's the only truth You see that that's what I was just sitting there thinking like you've had so much success But then there was like your contemporaries a lot of them have become even bigger households Right, but have you ever had the rest of we're wondering why somebody else's career went one direction and yours went another But now right now you got your own show I did when it was happening Because I didn't understand what I know now You know, I Something happened to me along the line Where I realized Hey, man, why don't you stop complaining? Yeah, why don't you stop complaining about who got this and who got that and who got that. Why don't you find out what they did?

27:51Why don't you find out what they did to do that? Why don't you want you start to look at what choices they're making? You know what I mean? Why don't you start trying to to to to uh work harder On what you're doing But at the same time, you know, do the math do the math about what you see You know, I mean if it's if it's a certain agency if it's a certain this or that or or they did this with an article or whatever Then you there's nothing wrong with watching the path and following it you know, but For me you know, I want my path to be my path right, you know, I want to I want to have to you know, I I can I can do this I can do this, you know what I mean, but you can learn You can learn from the people closest to you. You can do all those things are still not Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, but you know what? You know, you know, what's today? That's 34 this is the end of the more line. Yeah, you know, but that but that 60 plus getting your own TV show man built around a character you created in your 20s 30s that has to hit differently like like did it feel like a comeback or like Confirmation that you never went nowhere It's confirmation and it's a comeback too because I get to be in front of the thing that people know me for You know, if if if I um Play quarterback, right? And then I you know at the sit down for another person for A couple of seasons or whatever Then hey, I'm always a quarterback, right? But I've seen quarterbacks Go through Going in first first round draft choice dotted up be in the hot guy got all the money this that the other thing and then slow down

29:56Slow down and the years went by and they didn't get those things and then finally the opportunity came But the opportunity didn't come like in one day The opportunity came by them saying you know what I'm a hang in there I don't have I don't have to start You know, I'm working I got my kids, you know, he's good to me. You know what I mean? I've I've seen greater miracles But I'll take this one I will take this one look what got you back on your square because you know you talk about your trials and What got you back to stay in focus and saying I can do this because most people would have fallen right with some of the stuff that you've been with so what got you in that Mind for him to be like I can do it Always I always thought that I could you know, but While things started happening without me I Started doubting it Not doubting what I could do, but doubting if it would happen You know, that's one of the things that that that has changed about my thinking is that who cares

31:00When it's gonna happen Just keep working on it Just keep working on it man and it'll meet you halfway You know if you ain't prepared when it happened is not gonna happen anyway. That's right. Did you ever do anything that would hurt you from coming back like you talk about Diddy and she just mentioned that you know Diddy might have or might have not punched the guy in the face Which hurt him for trying off a bishon. I was like shit it is Leo jacks out Leo Jackson that was the other guy I talked to also I think he works closely with you or whatever you and Martin Works closely with and um, and I was like damn it is and then he say yeah, and so when they sent when they sent this in me I watched the whole season.
