Ig Nobel Prizes Move to Zurich, Skipping U.S.

The Ig Nobel Prizes, which celebrate quirky science that makes people laugh and then think, are moving their 36 annual ceremony to Zurich, Switzerland. Normally held in the United States in September just before the Nobel Prizes, this year's event is organized by the annals of improbable research, magazine. The shift comes because organizers say it's unsafe for international winners and journalists to travel to the U.S. right now amidst strict immigration, policies focused on deportations and visa restrictions. For 35 years, winners have come to American cities like Boston to pick up their awards amidst showers of paper airplanes, pass highlights include Japanese researchers testing zebra stripes on cows to stop flybites, a team studying lizard's pizza tastes, Europeans finding. Alcohol can boost foreign language skills and a long-term look at fingernail growth. Last year, four out of 10 winners skipped the trip to the U.S.

1:02Swiss experts are excited to host, partnering with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the University of Zurich. One past winner, an epidemiologist, who proved playing the didgeridoo, cut snoring, called it a fun way to spotlight unusual research.
