Entering the United States without proper authorization is a violation of federal immigration law. Individuals who are in the country without legal documentation—regardless of how long they have been here or whether they have committed any additional crimes—are subject to deportation under existing statutes.

Supporters of strict immigration enforcement argue that these laws must be upheld to maintain the integrity of the nation’s borders and legal system. On the other hand, critics say the approach lacks compassion and fails to consider the complex human stories behind undocumented immigration.
