I Stop Rehearsing Conversations That Haven’t Happened

About this episode

How often do you find yourself planning conversations, predicting reactions or preparing for disagreements that haven’t even happened? Today’s meditation is about stepping out of imagined conversations, returning to the present and trusting yourself to find the right words when the moment actually arrives.

A Poche Production Hey, it's Katie Matten here, your new host of Your Morning Mantra. Today's meditation is about noticing how much energy we can spend preparing for conversations that may never happen. Your morning mantra, I stop rehearsing conversations that haven't happened. Ease into a comfortable position and take a deep breath. Slowly stretch your neck, moving your head from one side to the other, releasing the tension, and let your shoulders drop. Take a deep breath in, and slowly let it go.

Who decide what you need to do today and take a moment for yourself? You deserve it. Have you ever had an entire conversation with someone who wasn't even there? You imagine what they might say, then decide what you'll say back. You explain yourself, defend yourself, predict their response, and prepare your next answer. Before you know it, you've spent 20 minutes in a conversation that hasn't happened, and perhaps never will. Our minds do this because they want to prepare us. They believe if we can predict every possibility, we can protect ourselves. But often all we're doing is experiencing the stress before we need to.

You cannot know exactly what someone will say, how they will react, or where a conversation might lead, and you don't need to trust yourself to find the words when the moment arrives. Today when you notice yourself rehearsing a future conversation, come back to the conversation actually happening right now. Trust that if the other one comes, you will handle it. Today's mantra, I stop rehearsing conversations that haven't happened. Repeat to yourself either out loud or in your mind. I stop rehearsing conversations that haven't happened. Carry this calm with you throughout your day. You do not need to hold every worry.

You do not need to predict every outcome. Just breathe and trust yourself. I'll see you this afternoon for our reflection.
