I, Rock A Geology Tale

0:00Okay, our friends, so I have heard some of you say things like we really like Minecraft because we get to dig things up and I've heard other of you say oh we really like jewels and stories about beautiful things and I've heard some of you say things like we like to go for nature walks and we like to go outside and I like all of those things wouldn't it be great if there were a story about digging things up and being outside and jewels or shiny things all at once oh my friends let me tell you about a very special thing called geology and because today we're gonna wrap it all up in one nice little package and we're gonna read you this story so hold on tight because you're gonna love today's story it's full of cool stuff it's called I Rock it's a geology tale and the words are by Katie Slavinski and the pictures are by

3:03a black board and it says senior citizen interviews presentation today and there's a boy but there's something if you look closely there's something under his shoe and the boy looks down what and it says hello excuse me down here stuck under Louis's shoe and when we can zoom in close we see it's a rock and the rock says there we go I couldn't help but hear your class sharing stories about the oldest people you know that rocks I noticed that none of those stories are from folks who have been around quite as long as me though would anyone like to hear a four billion year old story yeah it might not look much but and of course at that all the kids raise their hands yeah oh you would really wow you all rock I started out in the deep dark underground till not quite liquid

4:08not quite solid not quite me and that's where I got to know my minerals and now we're going to hear about some minerals there's zircon and quartz and felt spar and biotite and horn blend and the rock says 4.3 billion years ago things are super moody this far back just like you can't remember the first days after you were born I have trouble remembering my first 300 million years I don't doubt that well moving on what are minerals they are ingredients that make rocks they can make us super strong some sharp and sparkly and my personal favorite able to withstand burning acid for a billion years ago introducing my minerals they really get me I guess because they are me

5:11I moved around inside a layer of the earth called the mantle for a really really long time now inside the earth we can see this is all of course what scientists have discovered because we don't we're not able to go into the earth's core are we yeah crust the solid part of your planet you spindle your timeline it's super thin compared to the rest of the earth's layers but as far as your daily lives go the crust is your whole world then comes the mantle this layer makes up most of the planet it's immense and even though the mantle seems solid to you humans it does flow around if you watch it long enough like I have then comes the outer core liquid gooey and hot hot hot hot the outer core gets to be around 9000 degrees Fahrenheit

6:16bust but not least the inner core is the deepest layer temperatures here are even hotter than the outer core maybe hotter than the surface of the sun holy gee moly you'd think it would be warm enough for everything to be melty but the pressure of the planet pressing in on the inner core keeps it totally solid until I got blasted up through the earth's crust and in the picture we can see what happened it was a volcano wasn't it come plow no not like pizza crust or sandwich crust you probably know the earth's crust better as the land and the ocean floor I got to know the ocean floor super well because the lava I was in cool and became part of it and that was 1.9 billion years ago and under water volcano my big debut at first I thought I'd sit in one spot

7:20forever but the ocean floor moves and so does the land turns out earth's crust is made of separate pieces called plates no not dinner plates tectonic plates that sit on top of the mantle and this is what the plates look like today in the picture we can see them and friends friends friends what strange things they are our rock says 1.8 billion years ago hanging out in the earth's crust specifically the oceanic crust still in earth's crust yep at least I'm out of the mantle and we can see there is the Pacific plate and then Naz Cub plate and the South American plate and the Scorsia plate and the Goku's plate and the Caribbean plate and the North American plate and African plate and the Eurasian plate and the Arabian plate and the Somali plate and the Andean plate and the Australian plate and the Philippine plate and the the Arctic plate

8:22don't forget about the Juan de Fuca plate oh my goodness so many different plates we didn't move fast only about half an inch a year says the rock until boom shake and boom our ocean plate sank under a land plate I didn't know they could do that we caused so many volcanoes and earthquakes on our way down whoops and then our little rock says 1.1 billion years ago this process was called subduction that's a fun word to say it's also a pretty fun thing to experience though it did slide me back into the mantle and we can see how the the plate of the ocean is tucking under the plate of the land anyway I ended up in the mantle again until guess what friends another volcano couple and this was 870 million years ago for

9:30this rock the day I flew well kind of I was in the air for a little bit when the volcano erupted does that count I got blasted back out and this time into the sky I cooled and landed atop the actual land wow what a ride he says for the first time I was me just me and that was 870 million years ago me myself and I for igneus he says an igneus rock taking on the world until now here's a fun fact friends igneus is a rock that is made from liquid rock cooling into solid rock you want to become a solid rock and your melty liquid rock like you got to become an igneus then a huge storm washed me into a river it was a wild rapids ride pieces of me got knocked

10:33off as I rushed and gushed about and now we see 450 million years ago he goes on this river right I'll never forget then 445 million years ago he says friends that became family our rock was called conglomerate and it was just the best good times when the water settled all that was left of me was piled with other rocks and over time winded up cemented together and became something new something sedimentary now fun fact sedimentary is a rock that is made up of pieces of rocks and minerals and sometimes even parts of animals or plants I'll stuck together and then he says to his friends

11:38because a massive earthquake I broke apart from the others and fell off a cliff into the ocean oh my that was 331 million years ago I'll never forget the day our penglomerate fell apart alas tight groups crumble all the time right that's just how things go and it's okay it's cool I'm fine I'm fine I wonder what those rocks are up to these days and then guess what happens to him next friends surfs up it was a tsunami do you know what a tsunami is hmm did you know the earthquakes can set off other natural disasters hmm I barely even had time to think because I ended up getting thrown back onto land by a huge wave and that's what that tsunami is that's a big wave 325 million years ago the famous supercontinent pengea formed and with me on it and I was there

12:43that's right the continent of pengea that's where all the continents were all one big super continent few he says the continent I landed on squished into another and formed a supercontinent in all lands and the world was connected then you can imagine the kind of adventures like I didn't too I got was kicked by dinosaurs 190 year million years ago watch out for those thorough pods their feeder no joke now a supercontinent is a huge continent that other continents eventually break off from and a new supercontinent forms about once every half a billion years from smaller continents merging back together 159 million years ago I watched baby dinosaurs hatch and they were so adorable and I got lodged into a dinosaur nest and then 99 million years ago there were some curious creatures back then that kind of looked like

13:44you all I was sniffed by baby mammals that's right we're mammals and then buried in an avalanche oh no that's when the snow piles up on you and then stuck back in the ground and as things piled up up up up I got pushed down down down 95 million years ago I was buried again won't pop but the weight of it all pushed on me so much I changed I became better more thick I still had all my minerals but they were arranged in new ways shinier sparklier I even had some pretty snazzy stripes in there for a while but then I sank too far down it ended up getting back into the magma 84 million years ago my metamorphosis was complete now here's a fun fact metamorphic rocks are rocks that get their minerals rearranged or even get entirely new ones

14:44from increased heat pressure or other types of chemical change there can be lots of different things that affect a rock to turn it into a metamorphic rock this time I didn't shoot out of a volcano no deep underground there was no way of getting out slowly in that cold and dark I hardened into a solid rock again it seemed my adventures were over I was trapped at least that's what I thought what I didn't realize was the plate I was in pushed against another and together they bunched up to make a giant mountain but I was inside and I had no way to know hello it's me I'm in here and that was 70 million years ago raising up even though I didn't know it 55 million years ago by this point I was one of the highest things in the world I wish I could have told myself that back then I would never have believed it and we can see where rock is inside the

15:48mountain peace by peace the rock around me crumbled away and then one amazing day whoa he was on the edge of the mountain and rolled down out out oh my oh oh day light I eroded off the side of the mountain and free again I tumbled down the trees back on land once more 3.3 million years ago whoa freedom now erosion that's a big word that is when rock or soil or dirt crumbles away over time because either wind or water or some other natural forces wear it down and that's why I've been for the past few million years well until we stepped on me on the forest trail and that was one day ago I met less or at least I met his show and today I got to meet all of you

16:49so there you have it I might not look like much to all of you but after four billion years I'm proud to say that I'm here I'm me and I'm rock and all the kids say you do rock rock on and that is some beautiful interesting things about geology right is that you've got these tectonic plates moving in the earth's crust you've got magma deep inside of our planet and then you have these different kinds of rock that come out the igneas the sedimentary the metamorphic rock right and it's kind of a rock cycle right when the rock changes types it's like the water cycle but the rock cycle right and you have all these minerals that go into them it's fascinating stuff isn't it I'm going to say it I think geology rocks me too and that is yeah be it
