Dukes & Bell — Hr4 - Ian Cunningham on the 'We' Behind the Falcons QB1 Decision. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
And so in a sudden AJ Terrell all the highlighted interviews you need from the dirty birds Did he hit the pile on he did touch down in ladder the best the Falcons have to offer right here on sport training Oh 92 9 the game We are Duke Symbel we start off every day and every hour by saying hey man We've got an update the NBA has ruled on the Clippers and the dirty play that went on with Kawaii Leonard Suspensions handed out and lots of fines will tell you more about that this hour also Braves in action will talk to Grant as they are playing the nationals Mike said they're in total control So hopefully that remains and about 20 25 minutes will get an update from Grant on the latest with our braids But we start guys if you're just tuning in with Ian cutting him Falcons general manager spoke today And he doesn't speak a lot hadn't matter facts spoken since I think is in a ductary press conference Mike Because there's a lot of work to do and I get that you know he comes in he's getting acclimated you got to build a roster
You know him and Matt Ryan and everybody it's involved in the front office as assistant general manager was sitting next to him today They had a lot of stuff to do But even now Almost what 10 days away am I right the 13th of September We still have not announced who are starting quarterback is and that was predominantly the conversation Today right at this press conference. So we want you to hear a little bit of it And Mike as we discussed this today, you know the thing that stood out to me was this whole us and we and this collaborative thing Because I really believe that the coach should probably make the decision. That's just where I'm at That's not to say the GM doesn't have a say it doesn't mean that Matt Ryan is like hey, I really like this guy But you do what you want because you're the coach And it felt like as a collective group they've not come to a decision But I'll let you decide in cutting him on first and foremost The process of keeping four quarterbacks because Mike how often have we talked about this since the beginning of this week like never I mean you ever keep four guys and that's why the hell's ag Harrison thing became kind of a bigger story because
Yeah, lack of flexibility with four qb's but they see something Certainly in one of these guys the question is I'm gonna see something the guy they're supposed to see something that's Michael beddings junior Exactly, and that's the number one question that still has yet to be answered here was our general managers answer And it's it's it's long but he explains the process of keeping four quarterbacks You know when we first when we got into training camp You know we came in with four quarterbacks and three of those four were we're banged up. We're injured and so You know you try to come in with the mindset of like all right the sky's not falling But you have three of your four quarterbacks that are injured the first day of training camp We're fortunate enough to have a guy like Cooper rush that was available at that point Where's the guy that started games in the sleigh? It's been a really good backup for a number of years So for us to be able to get a player with his caliber at that point. We were fortunate and then For a kid from D2 Minnesota state more head to come in and be work with the ones and actually do an admirable job
Says a lot about him and his maturity um And then to see Cooper and and Jack Continues to get better throughout while to a and Mike we're getting and healthy so That kind of put a coming in with that thinking all right There's there's some injury risk right with those guys Trying to protect against that. There's a little bit of an insurance policy But there's also these guys have been Productive during the preseason and so if you let a guy like Cooper go There's a potential that he may be able to get an opportunity To go to another team if you let a guy like Jack Strango he's subject to waivers and the way he played You know we like we talk about all the time draft develop retain in his case he's undrafted but to develop You know, there's a chance that somebody could have claimed him So I think it's about you know living in the now But also living in the future with Jack so that that kind of went into the the four quarterback process And I know you and I want to live in a future with Jack Strang You're gonna get his opportunity first things first though as we've said
You've got to establish is Michael Penex Jr You're gonna be your guy are gonna pick up that fifth year you gotta make that decision in the spring He's got to get out there and when when is that gonna happen? I don't know I mean, I mean I presume that now and you and I were joking because we said you know all day today The quote that I got to kick out of is you know well We're gonna use an available situation They don't you know they don't have a game situation to to basically see what he's all about is all gonna be a practice and a level Yeah, and no live you know no live games you can simulate all you want Guys there's something about being out there and and playing against another team and seeing different Looks and schemes and all of that and I said this earlier and I repeated for those who missed it It's not as if Penex hasn't played in the NFL. He has the question is how will he play coming off of this third ACL? It's not as if he's gonna have deer in the headlights and like oh my god I don't know what to expect he's done this For limited time, but he's done it And so that part of it is you know some of you are like well he's played and he'll be fine. He may be
Bull new system correct. There's a lot at at at at stake here What about uh, Ian Cunningham being asked today specifically about when the QB1 decision will be made and who's going to make it? Yeah, it's still I feel like that's what us talking we we talked constantly we've talked about every single position um You know every single position on this roster we've discussed uh what we think but Ultimately that that will Um When they're ready when the coaches are ready when the players are ready we'll we'll make that decision. Okay, so no decision Now but you and I heard the we what's this we stuff? Yeah, look Mike I uh, I'm just not a fan all right and and I hope that he and Cunningham has monster success Because you know what that means? We've won super balls We've been to the playoffs numerous times We're winning franchise. We're not a laughing stock of the league I need him to have success. I need Kevin's to fans get a half success So for everybody that's involved with this Matt Ryan. I want to see him have monster success
but this idea of We're all sitting here Mike and we're gonna lay out what we think is right for the team Okay, that's fine But then who stands up and goes this is what we're gonna do Who is that and that's what we were trying to get out of Ian today and Ian's basically saying we talk about it all the time Us we will and I get this collective thing that that's at play I really do and I do think that there are people who have voices right But I'm just not a believer in that man. Uh, we've been here Mike. We've seen it happen With this organization time and time again when GM's come in and they talk about this and you're like okay That's fine But who's standing up and going guys. This is our guy and we're going with it great. Let's go Well, that's just dead. I mean we heard about collaborations between Thomas Dimitro often Dan Quinn And some of it was good some of it was really really bad You know last five years are really really bad You know, but that's that's part of it. I mean rich mk was the tie break on a collaboration vote Give me kai Don't need anymore of that now on the flip side And nothing against Ian because I do think Ian is trying to reshape this team. You understand you got to be bigger in the
You know down front and the defense and even though the sacks were you know impressive number it didn't help us win the division And we've got to you know get tougher down low. We got to stop the run and there's other things he's tweaking I like the vision. I will say this when it comes to the collaboration if Matt Ryan is involved Okay, and Matt has got the information available to him from from Stofansky from being it practice We know Matt's been up there all summer long If a guy with Matt's level of experience is involved in deciding who starts week one Based on all things being equal. I got no problem with that mean either But doesn't sound like that's what's happening But I thought the idea was to let Stofansky cook and they were not trying to make him out out of a mole And I for some guys you're not following the semantics Generally, it's the coach and the coach's staff the coach makes the final decision correct GM's get the players Coach makes decisions on the floor on the court on the pitch That's what happens Do you think Alex and Thapeless is in the dugout every damn day talking to want wife's about his lineup He might be but ultimately it's what weiss and how he's gonna run this team and what he wants to do with it So I just feel like that part of it is a little bit
It's unsettled for me. Well, because we have a history with collaboration Correct and we're not big fans Oh counting down was also asked today if any one of the four quarterbacks could start week one If it's a four-way competition I don't know if Zeno asked that's a good question. Oh, but Mark Ramon he reported that it was Ramon He said he couldn't answer that yeah, it was Ramon who asked the question and he said of course not all at the same time and everybody laughed But is it a competition Here's the oral four guys compete. There's simply two guys competing. Oh, he yeah, I can't he'll widen answer it Because he's not gonna put himself out there. It's Duke's and bail. Let me hear Ian. So no decision yet on QB1 correct Ian Your starter is going to be one not yet. No Okay, that was pretty simple 10 days out Are we the last team guys by the way? Did they oh are we the last team to name our starter? Is there one other team out there? Are we the last one to name it? Yeah, I don't I don't know if the Cardinals have officially named Book Jacobi said I think it's presumed that he is going to be starting because you remember he had his whole contract
Where he is they paid him decent money not crazy money, but decent money Okay, so I think it's pretty much assumed he's gonna get that job. All right one other thing Um And it gets back again to the collaboration thing as Ian was asked about this this decision and it is the biggest decision guys And I know you guys may be like Mike and Carl man. Why why are we this is a big deal It just is right. I mean, I don't know how else to to give this to you except to say The reason why they're taking their time and this is where I'm at right now Mike because they really want to give pinnocks this opportunity There's no other reason you don't name a starter Even if you didn't think the jackson man was the guy you name somebody you name to your name Cooper rush But they're giving pinnocks every opportunity to show them and that's why they're delaying this process And that's cool and but the thing that I've said and I'm I've said a million times I'll say it again. I don't want to see two as start this season. I want to see Michael panic I want to get I want to get the largest possible sample size with the Kevin Stephansky offense of what this guy is or isn't
That's it in an old star's week one and I think from a from from a fairly purely a fan sample Yes, it's not it's not exciting to start with two and knowing that panic's eventually is gonna take over We've talked about that. So yeah, I think you're right. I think that's that's certainly a tell that whatever they can glean from However, these practices work. I've you again, there's no contact You're gonna send some different looks at him you're gonna try to over dial up some stuff So panic says to react and how he handles and how we process is yeah, if he does it better than two, he starts You know the real test though is when real pressure is coming off the edge here I come I know I know That's the see you there's no simulation for that All right, be week one guys. They'll be TJ. Why correct and and that's that's what I'm saying All right, here is one last thing from Ian. There's lots of stuff guys We've talked about today. You can always rewind on the Odyssey app But the decision and this collaboration thing. Oh here is Final decision is that Kevin is that you is that Matt? This is Arthur or somebody else We all talk about it and we all have been talking about it forever
So at the end of the day we'll make the decision and when it's time to make the decision We'll let you know Ian had a very evil smile when he answered that by the way That question came from Terrence Moore and he was like Because it was almost like I've already said this We talk about it and I said to Mike this includes Arthur Blink What's Arthur's what is he saying about this? Because Arthur has already said that Michael Tinks is the franchise quarterback But I'm not meddling anymore. I paid a consultant. I gave away millions of dollars to tell me to bug out and bus off and stay out of it And I'm staying out of it. They're gonna make a decision. I trust Matt Ryan and this group collectively I am no longer meddling you not I am not repeat after me. I am not I am not a medla And I never asked for the Sean was it. I just showed up one day. Whoa. Whoa. That's not true He just showed up one day and outdoors. I said well, you know, Sean was it outside that's what I'm inside
Why are you bringing a vote? He just showed you know, you're like a Coca-Cola come on inside I'm just wondering what mr. Blink we love you. I'm wondering what he's saying about I do believe in all seriousness. He did pay these guys. I mean as we you know Arthur could have come into your section and our section we're gonna tell them what he needed to do bought out but anyway, they got new management and it just it was a bit of a Yeah, moment for Carl and I to hear what's this we stuff? Kimo Sabi this us action let the coach decide right yeah, but the general managers got the business decision to make it About the quarterback and start the process if he's not gonna be the guy So I get that side of it too guys. I think we don't get this announcement until Wings day before Sunday's game As late as you can before you have to because he's not gonna he didn't have to Kevin doesn't hi-kip Kevin doesn't have to Wednesday before the game. That's what I think. All right. We're coming back. Grant's gonna join us braves do win
And also we got to talk about some of these milestones our guys are hitting one guy's hitting good milestones One guy not so much Well the braves win nine nothing over the Washington Nationals today It was an afternoon game and grant jointists to talk about that and much more and grant I think Mike's gonna be like what because Sean Murphy had four RBI today Yeah, he's worth waiting for I guess yeah four ribbies today grant for Sean Murphy Yeah, big one for him couple of hits continues to just do what he's been doing which is to you know put the battle on the ball and Driving some big runs and hit some homers So the regular playing time as we talked about last week and just exploring that option for the braves to try to get a little bit more power A little bit more balance maybe in the lineup with another right-handed hitter to get him rolling as Certainly worked out for Sean Murphy thus far. He's got a nice little modest five game hitting streak A game on base streak and has hit The long ball as well, which is a big thing If you want to see because there's been a little fewer and further between for the braves here in the month of
August heading into now September you just haven't seen as much of that power as we did at other times during the season So hopefully it's a sign of things to come and a big win like this Maybe get some a little bit of that momentum to carry into a four game series against the Philadelphia Phillies Right now with those guys breathing right down the berry braves next But I mean I was a little worried when Grant Holmes had to come out because of the extended rain delay up there in DC But he combines with four braves pitches for two hitter. I mean that's I mean that's got to be a confidence builder And could Grant have gone deeper you you certainly look dialed in today Yeah, and I think he's looked and I've used this phrase a lot on the show and it sounds like a backhand a compliment But it's really not I mean he's been far more good than bad this year has Grant Holmes But there've been a couple of blowups. Yeah, there have been there absolutely have been and for most pictures and baseball in the non-Crisale category You're going to have more than one every you know 15 or 20 or 30 starts That's just how this game works But I feel like he's continued to make adjustments and to compete and to take the ball and and make the most of the opportunities Getting right now and we'll see what this pitching staff kind of looks like as the picture comes more into focus regarding what their playoff
Plans are going to be as far as really setting rotations and setting the bullpen and seeing what final roles are But for right now Grant Holmes continues to go out there every fifth or six day depending on how the pressure doing the math and for the most part Just keep them in the game and that's really what you need to do when you've got an offense It should be doing the things that the braves are doing and hopefully those things that we've been talking about look a lot more like they did today With some runs on the board and some crooked numbers and some home runs Those are things that the braves really need to get dialed up as they make this stretch drive and try to hold off the fillies What milestone did Ronald Acunia achieve today Grant? Yeah big one for him 200 steals and 200 homeers now he'd been sitting on 199 on home runs for quite a little while here as we talked about the home runs that no one has I think Had fewer and further between and you just don't expect it than Ronald Acunia Jr He's a guy that usually powers up goes on a nice big run and all of a sudden you just look at those numbers You're like okay. There's 20 there's 30 there's more But it just hasn't been that way this season But 200 homeers 200 steals fastest player in baseball to do it 904 games
He surpasses Alfonso Soriano and how's this for symmetry? Soriano did it in 929 games. That's fun for us on 9290 game He also happened to do it while playing his one year for the nationals against the braves He joined the 200 200 club and now Ronald Acunia Jr passes him playing for the braves against the national So these kind of things they just worked themselves out sometimes just takes about 20 years It's grandma cally with this guy's bunch of remarks spain They get a dead in DC 9 zip and his grandson up to filly for a big series So as long as Hassan Kim keeps hitting I mean is it the merit system now Walt Weiss keeps him rolling and what does this mean for how they used to bond That mean they continue to try to find ways to move maricio around right We saw Ozzy D.H.ing and maricio starting a second maricio occasionally will need a day off too We got one today and obviously that will be part of the plan But as long as Kim continues to do the kind of stuff that he's doing and look the at bats look so much better The swing looks so much better and you can just tell that again And we can kind of point to Sean Murphy and maybe say well more playing time and more bats gives you the better chance to really get rolling
Because it's hard if you're only getting and at batter two or start every you know weaker so To really do anything of of any value for the club So I think that they's going to continue to get mixed in to answer that you know question kind of point blank And I think maricio will continue to start summit shortstop and also to be able to give guys a day here or there and help out in the outfield as needed What's this rotation going to look like Against the fillies and do you like the way things are setting up? Well the fillies have certainly set themselves up Because they've got their big four go and you're going to get Chris sale versus Christopher Sanchez in game one That's about as good as a pitching match up as you can possibly ask for but the fillies were able to kind of Balance everything else out in their favor if you look at you know their rotation is going to be Zach Wheeler in game two marking Perez gets the ball for the braves Then you've got Tyler Malley against erinola and it closes out with Bryce elder against Jesus Luzardo So they are going to get all four of their horses into this series And again as we talked about yesterday
It's on the fillies to try to win this series I misspoke because I said two out of three yesterday It's a four game set so if they split it does the fillies no good if the fillies win three out of four They still only game you know a couple of games But that's obviously going to be big for him it to braze win three out of four Obviously that pushes the fillies back and wipes out these head-to-head matchups But hey look these two teams have not been Facing each other head-to-head and quite sometimes it's way back in the first half at the end of April And we've still seen this thing swing wildly and quickly You know that the fillies could be back five and all of a sudden they're back three or they're back nine and a half and all of a sudden They're back two so head-to-heads are huge and obviously the pitching matchups are what they are and the Braves will have to score the runs they need to to win those games But yeah, these are the games that think you've had circled on the calendar for quite some time If you the fillies and for the braves It's a chance to really do some damage to their plans of anything head-to-head I know we talked about Dylan Lee because that's a hitters park and you know You don't want him getting teed off on so what what are they doing? What's what's the plan now? So he's not tipping his pitches
Yeah, I think it's just mechanical adjustments is what Dylan Lee was pointing to so you you kind of go in you watch a lot of film You know, maybe you talk to some other people whether it's Jeremy Huffner or JP Martinez guys on that side your catchers Just anything that they think they can see that they might pick up because you know There's nothing wrong in baseball with being able to steal the signs the old fashioned way or understand what pitches come in or be able to tell what pitches come in Before it does it is on the players to be able to disguise those things and have the adequate amount of deception that they need So if there's something that he's already keyed in on chances are he's probably not going to tell us just in case just a you know not Still any state secrets to anybody or help out the opposition even more But if he's able to button up whatever it is that would certainly be nice because he's a huge and important part of that bullpen as the I'd say the The main left-handed weapon, but Dylan Dodd has also continued to deliver so the braves do have you know a little bit of I'd say some depth there that you'd need and some guys that can do the job so it's not all on Dylan Lee
But you got to get him going and you've got to get him going right and especially in the leverage positions and and opportunities that he gets to pitch You know one pitch can very well decide a ballgame one swing can decide a ballgame So the sooner he gets that figured out the much better will be for the braves Grant I was asked this question. I said I'd ask you Outside of Matt Olson who's been the second most important everyday player for the braves Michael Harris I think that the season that he has had Defensively at the plate clutch hits. I mean he's just done I think everything you could possibly ask for out of Michael Harris I mean these are the kind of seasons that I think we'd all get together and spring training and start talking about all right What do you expect from this guy and this guy and this guy? I was just waiting for one of these just complete season starting On opening day and running all the way through the year where it's just a consistent and and competitive at bat from Michael Harris Throughout the entire course the season it seemed like he really ran into some trouble last year and had to grind his way through that season
And sometimes you learn a lot from years like that where nothing makes sense nothing you're doing is working You try to change things then you're afraid to change things So I think you learned a lot from last year that has benefited him in this season He's putting together to this point a career year He may not win the gold glove because the peak crew Armstrong and center field But yeah, it's been pretty fun to watch Michael Harris do his thing out there as well All right guys the diamondbacks leading the Phillies won nothing in the bottom of the eight So let's go deep back let's go snake Yeah, hopefully take care of business got Grant and again, but this will have some serious drama and again To beat the Dodgers I think we can beat the Phillies, but it'll be great to see everybody amped up and a little extra choose and Chris sale He's probably the toughest I don't say you know physically tell you to punch him in the face But he's like the mentally I think the most toughest guy on this team. That's the guy I want out there. Yeah I mean he's the great competitor. I mean you look at all the best competitors in baseball and Chris sale is gonna make that Top five or top three or whatever you want to call it I mean he just understands what the job is he understands his expectations for his performance
They they're sky high and obviously there's good reason for that and he just goes out there and does things And even at this age kind of defy logic for a pitcher that seems to have somehow just you know Found the fountain of youth they're turned back the hands of time It's been tremendous to watch him every fifth or six days again depending on the braze pitching rotation math But you know Carl if I'm to pick a pitcher or just another player in general You know I said Michael Harris as far as hitters are concerns. Yeah, I cannot overstate the importance of Chris sale To this braze pitching staff and this braze team as a whole now you're right I he asked me that and said because we were debating about you know Riley and Olsen's in a in a you know category by himself But you know we talked about the injuries to Akunya and then coming back and the expectations and I was just like I'm with you that's what I told him I said it's money and and I don't know if we've given money His do this year. I don't know if we've talked about him like we should have to be quite honest But yeah, Chris sale. That's a no-brainer when you talk about the starting rotation. Great great job By the way, do you know when you're on this weekend? Yep, I'll be on from five to seven on Sunday
And we'll be unpacking a big series up in Philadelphia won't quite be over We've still got a Monday game to hold us over in the labor day But we'll be talking all about that. I've got some interviews I'm gonna run from some conversations with a couple of more members of the 91 braze So that should be a lot of fun and yeah, we'll just look forward to this weekend I want to be some musty baseball for braves and fillies fans out there. Is that Monday game afternoon game? It is right It's what an afternoon game. I believe so I'm just saying for everybody. It's all right All right, because we got to think we got football cost for born at night and then braves in the afternoon Great great job, and we'll talk tomorrow brother. Thank you Sounds great. Thank you guys Murphy and Kim getting it together man get it working. It's That's what we've been asking for you know, and seven eight nine not be you know, you know Austin Riley I did see a stat that I sorry. I just popped into my noggin Austin Riley Strikes out if he strikes out one more time. It's these already strike out more than he's ever struck it out in his career with basically an entire month left in the season You know, and it'll be his worst season. It'll be basically his worst season ever
Are we gonna be talking about Riley going into the offseason and What what the situation is moving with Chipper? I mean how should get the stroke down, man. Uh, all right coming up. George's eternal attorney general speaks What did he say? Very interesting stuff stay there. It's college football related. It sports radio 9290 Want to remind you sports radio 9290 game is your home for college football coverage Guys join us Saturday eight a.m. As Mitch Evans and Abe Gordon set the day They get you going and they will set up all of the days games With college football game time. It's brought to you by Ingles low prices love the savings and by window nation window nation.com are called 86690 nation. That's this Saturday 8 a.m. on sports radio 9290 to 9 the game So George's attorney general his name is Chris Carr Is encouraging SEC commissioner Greg Sankie to take quote All measures available Including suspension and removing LSU from the conference
if if Hear me if the tigers elect To roster former NFL players or a player this season He wrote a letter to Sankie's office mic and says we as in the attorney general of Georgia Are willing to use all legal means necessary to protect the University of Georgia students student athletes and the integrity of college athletics there you go and we talked about you know where this will go and do you put enough Smoke and heat and eventually the court of public opinion will make LSU melt on this to wait Texas texted with sorenzby You know Brandon sorenzby and then hold that all that fiasco So will there be common sense? See I don't think there's any common sense at LSU You made the point yesterday. You don't think this is all online You think it's the people that are paying lanes pay check. I do But they're driving this. I know that don't get me wrong all these big-time state school coaches have a lot of power They do okay plus you're the highest page to aid employee. I get it But there's a lot of power brokers behind these people and when you have this This thing where it's us against everybody
You start to feel I think they feel empowered Mike to kind of show everybody We can do what we want to do you guys can't hold this but and I think they're pushing him listen to Lane's comments He keeps saying hey our kids are not in the hearings, but you know I'm not at the hearings We'll see what happens Friday when this goes down and he's kind of Mike Not pushing the issue as hard as you might think When in fact, you know, it feels like LSU that this train is going down the tracks I love the fact that Chris Carr the attorney general for Georgia is saying this but you're right This is like hey, we're about to put our foot down and this is this is one attorney general What about Tennessee's attorney general Florida's attorney like this is where it starts to pile up right now Eventually the SEC will get a judge and they'll get this in a courtroom where common sense will prevail Think but you know don't count on that in 2026 But just another amount of pressure being brought to bear by my car the attorney general and see how the SEC plays it and Love to see this story just go away. Love to see Clemson B del SU
Davo have good triumph over evil not likely to happen though speaking of Lane kiffin New book is out from john taulty will try to get him on the show this week, but john from CBS sports In his book called Lane being Lane They take the most salacious stuff from the book in the excerpts for vanity fair In an article called Inside Lane kiffin's trash talking era with Nick Saban at Alabama It's pretty wild and that basically Saban said keep him away From the sorority girls and that Lane was basically on one giant lost weekend with his family out in California after getting fired at USC That Lane was just basically getting it in and a small town where everybody knew about it and eventually even though it maybe didn't make TMZ or national news Everybody around the college football world doing that's why he wound up at FAU and missed out on big jobs that were available at the time Yeah, because he was the offensive coordinator at Alabama had one of the best offences in the country You're right. He was a hot commodity goes It doesn't interview with Pete tamil for size. He's getting ready to move to bokeh and basically talks issue about Nick Saban's coaching
Management style living in Tuscaloosa and then he goes on to call plays to warrant practice the week of the semi-final game here in Atlanta against Michigan state and that pushes save to say that's it fire the blank planker And then Jimmy sex and works out something where they's making sound like oh, it's a mutual agreement And then Sarkeesian comes in and kind of like what happened with 17 with the Falcons Sarkeesian really was an up to the task and they fall short on a couple of big plays against Clemson You're right. You're right. Uh, because it's hard to come in and go. Yeah, we just want to do what he did Right and again that way man. No, man. You've got to have your thing and you've got to really have confidence And Sarke was there on the staff, but it still didn't play out. No, not at all and you know Like you said when he came here to the Falcons, Mike it wasn't a bad hire It was just you were asking him to do something that I think it would have been hard for any coordinator to do We were joking around about like the sports time machine today in addition to obviously stopping national and international Tragedy things we also affect the sports outcomes. I would smack Dan Quinn around and go Hey, hey, you don't need Sarke Matta floor Matta floor is here. He's here. He knows Ryan. He knows the offense
He knows Shan An's offense. He's too young. Come on. He's too young. He's not ready. You know what iron will sharpen iron Hindsight's crazy, right? So there's a few things. Hey, the floor has been pretty good If we have a time machine we win the Super Bowl And then we also have a dynasty because we get a guy and who rose the office and we get least two or three years out of the floor before he leaves Yeah, but of course that's not how it happened. Would have been nice. Yeah, yeah, his brother Mike Mike is now the coach of the Cardinals We're talking about Matt Packers coach. He was here and we'll see Green Bay on the Thursday night That's true. We certainly will they don't have quarterback issues. They'll make They they have their franchise quarterback Come on guys end of text like here you go dude. She's bound making a mountain out of a molehill Are we about this? No, we just When you hear a general manager talk about us and the decision-making who the sherdin quarterback is gonna be if that Maybe you weren't around for Dimitra off and Quinn the us part gives us pause That's what we were talking about I uh and look I I want to be um
Clear on this I think Ian is heading in the right direction He hadn't been on the job long enough guys for us to do a full evaluation and I always say this general managers Three years. Let me get through three drafts. Let me get through three off seasons right and see where there is But I do like the direction I do feel like he has a plan and I get why Matt and others in this organization were impressed In speaking with him Mike because I think he learned to be quite honest with you from the best Well, you're talking about the Ravens the Eagles and then you leave you know, you're in Chicago Like I feel like the way Chicago has turned And and you've seen the Ravens be competitive and one of the best organizations over the years Philly There's something to that and and either you are really dumb or really smart if you're in those organizations And you don't take stuff from them And I think he got here. Mike. I was like, okay. Here's my assessment and it fits we need to be bigger up front I think him and Jeff Olbrich hit hit it off there I do believe that they both feel that way on the defensive line Okay, so what else do we need to do we need to lock up our core players
They did that this off season the quarterback thing eventually is going to work itself out And I hate to say this one way or the other Do we hope that this it works these share with Michael pinnocks? Yes, because then we don't have to worry about it That's that's that's always been the whole argument here Where people get mad at us or met more more more mad at me than you but you know is about you know I say I'm talking about the injury history because you know what we're here because he gets injured a lot That's why we don't know he's the man yet You know, and that's why we didn't get to see him screaming if nothing if okay if not play in the preseason at least Scrimmage against the Colts and that would have given him a bitter sample size for Stofansky and Tommy Reeves and Alex van Pelt everybody and apparently Andy and Cunningham To decide if this guy is the guy you know to start to see is I don't want to see two is nothing against two You know, I maybe we could establish a trade and somebody finds they want they're interested in two If he starts well for a couple of games, but I want to see what panics is that's the whole thing So then we know by May when the deadline comes are we picking up the option? Yeah
And then if not we're gonna go draft the quarterback in a and what now not would seems to be a really good draft Well, I'll just give you an example like When the cuts happened earlier this week coming off the weekend Joe milk was let go by the cowboys and people were like dude. He's played great He's a great young player go get him cowboy signing back to their practice squad and the point I'm getting to is most teams realize Just like the Falcons you're hoping that nobody comes up, but usually works out You know, they put they put Harrison on the on the waivers Mike and and they end up resigning him and then today in cutting him talks about What kind of player they think he is, but they had to make a decision and the decision was simple We're gonna keep these four quarterbacks because there is something there that says if it goes wrong I've got to have something in the room. I don't want to go searching I don't have to make trades and therefore we're gonna take the chance on letting Harrison be out there for a minute And then we're gonna get hopefully getting back they did the point is all these cowboy friends are losing their mind about Joe Milton On his back on the practice squad for the cowboys now again, but they definitely I don't I'm just guessing
I don't know but if Matt is you know if Matt Ryan's asked about quarterbacks That's a positive because he knows the damn job Yes, and if Matt feels hey, we can't risk losing a guy like Jack Strand And it's more than just the simple as you said with the cowboys every summer There's a guy like this in many camp and then summer camp guys fans fall in love with the backup But I think there's something about this guy that the folks it's not just the fans I think that the management season they wouldn't do it other way They have to do all sorts of cap gymnastics to try to keep Zach they get Zach Harrison on the practice squad You know, it does kind of hamstring you because it gets tight as you're seeing But now the question will be does the team lose a quarterback and then we could trade a guy like Cooper rush in the course of the first quarter of the season something like that You better feel pretty confident about these other two. Oh, that's just it. Yeah, that's just it Hey, by the way the other big story today is cool is a couple up now is It's a huge huge huge penalty for the LA Clippers and Steve Balmer now the money usually nothing for Balmer But they lose five first round picks and credit are a buddy Jeff Woolverton who used to work with at the old 790
Jeff was saying remember the Minnesota T-Wols got nailed for doing a yin yang contract with Joe Smith That's true And they manipulated some money which eventually kept him on the roster for a middle-level exemption They got a big contract now so anyway, it's happened before but the money is the thing here The idea that Pablo Tore was dead on about a year ago when he dropped this article That there was a dummy corporation set up to give the claw co-I Leonard and some extra loot outside of the cap And now Balmer's paying for it. Yeah, and we found out again These suspensions it's it's really incredible Balmer suspended for All league and team activities for one year plus the $30 million fine, right The president of business operations these are the names we dropped it we dropped earlier Gillian Zucker is also suspended without pay for one year for being primarily and directly culpable for the endorsement arrangements and then the President of basketball for the Clippers his name's Lawrence Frank. We mentioned his name earlier
He is also suspended without pay for six months for his involvement with these impermissible endorsements and engagements or arrangements should I say so like that part of it and then the five picks I mean like there's a lot to this and I think oh mentioned something to us in the break Which I thought was very interesting if you go back and you'd have to be a you know basketball head to remember this But the Paul George when they went and got Paul George and they traded sga Who nobody knew he was gonna be this damn good You in essence lost ten picks now in the pursuit of getting Paul George and co-I Leonard And obviously that was a great big nothing burger Paul George now Again a shell of himself now he's in Boston and co-I eventually this now goes to Toronto By the way Joe Pompoliano covers sports in the business of sports The bomber earns more than three hundred million dollars carl in tippenens from his Microsoft stock every Quarter so basically it'll take him less than ten days to cover the thirty million dollar five
But as you pointed out the five first round picks if you want to build this thing organically The way Oklahoma City has done or we're trying to do in Atlanta now you can't do it. No not gonna happen Hey tomorrow come join us. We're at Twin Peaks and Kennesaw will be up there Kennesaw takes on West Georgia great interview with coach mac today by the way Jerry mac came on if you missed it go listen mic said it It's not in the making man. I think his team if they can beat like they did and win another c ush championship mic It's only a matter of time and I'm not trying to run him out of here I just think like he's got it and you can hear it and as I think his team and his kids respond So hopefully they'll get it done tomorrow But that should be a good game and then of course tomorrow we'll be talking about Colorado and Georgia Tech on the flats and we're gonna talk to the catorotto play by play guy is that right okay? All right tomorrow so more insight on the buffalo's really that small in person as they look like in that video that we're It's so weird what mark johnson did you say yeah, it's so weird normally the camera adds ten pounds Well, we know that hey man.
