Sanchez, especially, sensation. We'll get into that. Flyers got a much needed victory last night. Convincing fashion. Now, not convincing it will make the playoffs. Let's step in the right direction for the flyer. Sixers back at it this weekend trying to get either the six or the five seed NCAA, the seven action and more. 3:02Alexander Graham Bell was planning to name his invention, the harmonic telegraph. He thought he was just improving the telegraph. And it was going to be called the harmonic telegraph. It was going to send more messages over that same telegraph line. But lo and behold, all of a sudden he discovered he could transmit voices. And it just so happened that on the very same day that Alexander Graham Bell filed that patent. Another man filed some sort of, it wasn't exactly a patent, but it was, I think it was called a caveat for the telephone on the same day. Alexander Graham Bell filed the patent for the telephone. Or he thought was going to be called the harmonic telegraph. Pretty cool facts. Tell you what's also cool, feckers for Sanchez. How about if this were called a harmonic telegraph? How about it? Got a better shot to when saw young in that scheme that fell who stinks.

4:03No, I was kidding. Did you see how it happened? He doesn't have a change up. No, no, no, no, no. Did anyone watch what happened to Paul Schienz? It had nothing to do with Paul Schienz. It had only a cruise misplayed two balls in the outfield. All time they weren't technically errors, but they were errors. It was not Paul Schienz's fault. Did not know that, did not know that. Well, Schienz is amazing. But you know what? So is Christopher Sanchez. The feels look pretty freaking good also. Let's get anyway. We want to hear your reaction whether you're there or not. After the game, I'm thinking the following. Pretty freaking cool. Team looks really good. Our team looks like a big time contender. Which doesn't surprise me, but it's good to see. Sanchez obviously the main star. I mean, you talk about losing a massive star, Wheeler. Not for too long. But you lose a guy of Zach Wheeler's caliber. This isn't like going from a Jowell and B to a bonus.

5:04You know Christopher Sanchez. Christopher Sanchez. You know that Christopher Sanchez became only the sixth pitcher since 1900 to record 10 or more strikeouts and no walks in a scoreless opening day start. I was shocked by a couple facts. Yeah, like the same fact. The first time the Phillies ever had a save on opening day at home. That is bizarre. It's beyond bizarre. It's absurd. But look, Sanchez, awesome. Matter of fact, Schwarber, let's listen to it. Because this was really the first if you want to call it moment of the season. As he has done before, I believe the last time he signed a contract with the Phillies. He got the season off with a bang at home. Let's listen to Kyle Schwarber get things going early. The pitch. Schwarber swings. Hits one high in the air to left. It's fairly deep. Going back. Haggerty at the wall. He looks open. It's gone. And Kyle Schwarber starts the season with a bang. Home run number one, a two run shot to straightaway left.

6:05And the Phillies lead to nothing. I love you. I love you. It felt like three of our first four hits yesterday were opposite field hits. It felt like exactly what I'd always wondered. Why can't we just take what the pitchers give us in and let the bat take the ball where it's just going to go? Isn't that the way we always hit best? And it felt like yesterday it was a really promising start for that reason alone. Just letting the ball go where it's going to go, putting bat on ball, just boiling it down to the simplicity of we're going to move guys. I love the fact that Justin Crawford is getting on. It was so cool to see him succeed often. And man, he's going to be a boss. It's awesome. I can't wait to see what he does this year. Schwarbom right at the gates. Are you kidding me? Are you serious?

7:06Like how on earth is this guy doing it? Love Kyle Schwarber. But that was crazy yesterday. I mean, we're all hoping for it. But he actually delivered it with trade turner on base. Thank you so much. And by the way, Kyle, I'm sorry, Alec Bohm, who I still doubt, did an amazing job in the fifth inning, driving three more and he actually did hit it out of the park. Opposite field also, by the way, just a great job with the approach, a great job with the patience, not trying to do too much. I would say across the board until I think of Bryce. Oh, we have Bryce. Bryce. Of course, he has struggled. Back has struggled the most. Look, there we go. And the back is thing. I wonder with the side armor. Look, I'm still thrilled that we have a side armor. But they say if he's off just a little bit with that side arm delivery,

8:07it really throws things off. Maybe that's what we saw yesterday. I'm not worried about Baucus in the long run because I know how much it seems. I hate to hit a side armor, especially a lefty side armor. So that felt like one of the... That felt like something that we shouldn't get caught up in. Yeah, no, it's just nothing to be too hung up on. But I'll tell you this. That was a great day. There was some good, there was some bad, but there's a lot more good than bad, and obviously your chance to weigh in. However, you consume the game at the game. Look, if you were there, I'd love to hear from you. On the festivities of it all, you know, what stood out to you, sight and sounds, smell the ballpark, feel the ballpark, but also listening here on WIP and watching on TV. I actually wonder how many people are thinking long term while watching the game in a different sense. You know, I was watching the game yesterday, and I was thinking, you know what, I think our team is really good. Short term.

And I'm saying to myself, I think they're going to do a much better job than the group 10, 12, 14 years ago. I guess it's like 15, 16, 18 years ago now. I'm sustaining it long-term. Crawford that actually, look, you hope Crawford's not thombrown. Little flash and then gone. You know, Sanchez, you hope isn't cliffly. Well, I know Sanchez. I know it's completely different. Oh, a cliffly. A cliffly was amazing. Yeah, a cliffly was incredible. But here's the point. I think they're really well positioned

13:10both short and long-term. Obviously, guys like Bryce and Trey and Schwarber and J.T. especially. And these guys eventually aren't going to be the dudes. And J.T. even right now is not the dude. But the reality is, I think they're in a really good spot. And what hit me yesterday was, I've got a big time contender and I'm probably going to continue to have a big time contender. And that made me, as a Phillies fan, feel great. Look, here is what stood out to you on opening day 215-5929494. James, you were there. Talk to us. Yeah, first and foremost, just being back in the ballpark. You know, it really does feel like you're back with your friends again. You know, it's like, I'm back to what I do every night. You know, it was really a special thing just to be in the ballpark again and feel the whole thing. But I thought it was a great day for the Phillies. Obviously, it got a little concerning late. You didn't want to have to use Duran there and all that. I want you to know I was in full mid-season mode. Dude, I can see Rhea just like sitting there fuming about it. But look, they pulled it out. And I think to your point, Joe, I agree with you on the pitching side of things.

14:11I think with having Sanchez Lazardo locked up, I think you feel really good about the top of the rotation. And you hope that painter turns into what you expect. And look, it was great to see Crawford. I say, I'm not as sold on the ballpark. I say, I'm not as sold on everyone aging into their mid to late 30s together that that's going to age great. Yeah, it's not great. You know, but I agree with you. I think for this year and next year, it's full go time. I think with this group, as it is now, and obviously the Wheeler think a big part of it, I think the next two years are incredibly important to get it done. I think it's sustained. But with this group here, these next two years are paramount. Got a real shot, Devon, what hit you yesterday? Oh, man. I was honestly like Christopher Sanchez. You pretty much covered it. I mean, he's just become so reliable. And the bullpen came through. Like you mentioned, I was kind of upset that they had to use Duran also his entrance. Just doesn't hit the same in the daylight. But when it comes to the bats,

15:11I mean, guys really stepped up. Like Justin Crawford, playing in his very first game in the majors, he had 40 people in the crowd, including his dad. And to go up and get one off on the very first pitch he saw, I was just so happy for him. Alex Boam really impressed me, even Brandon Marsh. I was a little worried about Brandon Marsh coming in. I know it's only one game. You know, really bad spring. I know he went through some injury stuff, some health stuff, but him going to, for four, honestly, my biggest concern coming out of this game, and I know it's only one game. Bryce Harper. Oh, for four. Yeah. I mean, hopefully he can figure it out, but he was swinging and chasing what we feared was exactly. Exactly. So look, it's only opening day, but what do we do on opening day? We overreact, and that's my biggest concern coming back. Well, everyone, yeah, everyone, chances 2-1-5-5-9-2-9-2-9-4-9-4. You know what stood out, one thing that stood out to me, Ria, was Sanchez, and I've seen this before in an opening day, like you're moving your,

16:11I don't want to say easing your way anyway. That's not quite what I'm trying to get at, but he was, I thought very controlled with his emotions until he wasn't. Until he wasn't. Like, he was very stoic. Yeah. He was being here, done that before. Like, I got this. I'm on top of it. I'm not a rock guy. I don't want it to be too emotional. But when he knew he was basically done and he knew he got through 6-10-10 strikeouts, Ria, he let it out. It was phenomenal. It was a great moment. The story of him and the development of him is remarkable. It was never in top any prospects, whatsoever. And you just feel incredibly confident when he's out there. But as Devon pointed out, the Harper thing, it was the fear all along because of what Dumbbrowski said. Was he going to press? And he literally tackled that ball in the night. I mean, so he made a great play defensively. Yeah, it was cool. Yeah, but. I think he inadvertently stepped on first base. Yeah. I had no idea with his leg while he was sliding by. But to that point,

17:11what hit me was, Bryce Harper has become a more reliable defender than he has at the plate, which is, you know, not the Bryce Harper that we've known. Well, I think we got it, you know, chill a bit here. It's one game. It's one game. It's one, we're overreacting. The guy that I thought looked the worst was Garcia. I thought his events were bad. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bad, bad, bad, bad. But he's got to get different arm pads than the orange ones he's got out there. I don't think he should have sleeves on. Just cut it off. Oh, you're right. I want to see the buy steps and try something. He should just show him. Just show him. Just cut the sleeves off. Just show him. All right. So your reaction at day one, it was a good day, obviously, a couple of negatives. Backest was by far the biggest negative. But your reaction to the first day, and what was it like to be there and obviously to have the fight and fills back? I just, it was great. It was a great day. Two, one, five, five, nine, two, nine, four, nine, four. Talk to us. What hit you? Let us know. Often, we're all in Appboard. Got it. Joe to Cameron. And the pitch.

18:11Swing and a fly ball. Well hit. Right field. Going back into the wall. Look it up. And it is gone. Opposite field. Alec Balm. A three run home run to break it open. Well, it was quite a day for Alec Balm. Break it open. James made a nice play to start the game defensively. Not a tremendous play, but a solid play. Hard hit ball. He made a play. He scooped that up with ease. And then the homer. And then the homer. But of course, the big news for his life. And it's really sad when you see this stuff. His family strife. Horrible economics. Horrible parable. Don't let your family manage your finances. I mean, just think about that. Forgetting everything else. The concept of suing your parents. I know. That's horrible, man. I have. I have more sympathy for Alec Balm. Because you wonder, John. How long has it been going on? Yes. You know. And I've been awfully hard on him for his mindset. His, you know, I've accused him of being sort of childish.

19:12And not having the right outlook and attitude. But, man, if you're having all sorts of familial issues. If your folks are not having, you know, bearing your best interest in mind. And I don't know the details. Right. I know that I need to have room for more sympathy for the guy. That's for sure. Yeah, terrible spot. And, you know, where these things get complicated is they often start with good intentions. And here's what I mean by that. Think about this. These are millionaires, multi-millionaires in many cases, who are going to come in hundreds of thousands or millions at the age of 21, 20, 24, 23. And so, you know, family members get involved because, you know, most 22-year-olds don't know what to do. So, you know, he was a third pick in a draft. So he was going to be a millionaire young. And so parents get involved, but then sometimes things become nefarious. Sometimes they just become bad management with people that actually have good intentions, but don't know how to do it. Sometimes nefarious. And, you know, it's a sad situation. We saw this with Ryan Howard about 20 years ago. Yeah, I thought of that.

20:13And it started, he alleges it started in 2019. So that's seven years ago. He's what, 29? Is that hold out? I believe so. So, yeah, you're right, 21, 22. Yeah. Your parents have run your finances your whole life. So you're like, ah, whatever. I mean, it's what it makes sense. And you're supposed to trust them implicitly, right? Like, that's the core of this is that of all people. Who else would I trust more to run my stuff? Yeah. In the end, Boom's Homer was particularly big because of back his struggles. It turned out to be the winning hit of the game. Yeah. They needed that one. Let's go to the phones. What stood out to you on day one? It's a good game. Obviously, the ninth inning got a little squirrely, but otherwise, outstanding game. 215-592-94-94. Jordan and Princeton kicking us off. Good morning. Good morning, everyone. Great opening day. Joe, I just feel your assumption that opening day is not the best day of the year. Well, it's funny because I swear to you when I was trying to think about that, I've kind of gotten to the point where I assume the Phillies will make the playoffs more, you know, but they won't always.

21:13So, on the... Here's the thing, Jordan. Yeah, I like Christmas. It's Jordan. Well, I think he was saying sports, but Jordan, I will say this. Up until a couple of years ago, I probably would have told you the Thursday of the tournament. I'm having a hell of a hard time getting into this tournament. So, that once in me is diminished. Maybe baseball opening... Well, you know what, Jordan, I'll say what I'll give you. I love the divisional wildcard rounds of the playoffs. I went out of order there. Wildcard and divisional Saturday and Sundays. So, there's a couple to choose between. I enjoy that. I love those days. You know, not to shout myself out, but Ruben Amaro said that my call yesterday was one of the best calls he'd ever heard on WIP. Anybody else hear that? Yes. I really appreciate it. You know why we heard it, Jordan? We were there. We were there. We were like two feet away from him. I think he was just making sure it actually got said. I really did. You know, James, the band Fish was also financially mismanaged for millions of dollars.

22:16This kind of thing is common. You really have to understand who is managing your money. And whether or not they're qualified and whether or not you can trust them. And the fact that his parents is just really sad because, you know, clearly he's all... He's our working baseball player, say whatever you want about the guy. Yesterday, opening day was the best opening day I ever attended. It was a beautiful day. It almost very filled out to you that we gave it up at the end. My only question from the day, you know, you could pick apart players. But, you know, itching management at the end. Do we leave the guy in a little bit too long? No, I'm not going to pull him. But yeah, it's just it's opening day. They had a big lead, Jeremy. They did not leave him in too long. But here's what I will say to that because I was listening to Fransky and L.A. Yeah. He's really, really terrible. But let me say I got the numbers here. He's really bad against righties. And they were too, you know, burger and then they pinch hit for somebody. So they were just talking about that. I mean, the numbers are stark. Yeah, no, but I was cool.

23:16I was cool with that because Jordan, you had a lead. It was a solid lead entering it. And you're trying to avoid using not only to Ron, but your best set up man. You're trying to avoid that. But if you have to, you can't. And that's exactly how Ron was saying it. I was glad that he did it. I was like, you got to get him in. Yeah, I got him out. I got him out. I thought it was weird. I agree in this. I thought it was weird to go to bag as to start dining. Like he basically was going to him for Kyle for Cory Seager. And then you're righties after. Like I get your point and you should be able to hold a five round lead. But I don't think it was like an odd. If it had been the top of the line up and they got the three, you know, two out of three lefties or whatever. Maybe it's just why you do it. And then a bunch of righties. It was weird. Here are the numbers versus lefties. One thirty nine versus righties. Three sixty five. It's pretty. It's pretty wild. Was he just it was top or just excited to see the side armor like we all know? No, I think it was that he had a five nothing lead. And he's like Seager is by far the best hitter who will bat. Likely this inning. I'm going to get this guy out and figure it out. But I think it was a mistake.

24:17I also think there's something to be said. Try to get the new guys in there. It was three straight new guys. It was not a good welcome to Philadelphia for him. No, well, you know what? Okay. Ryan, did you think in the moment of Jordan Romano? The eyes. Yeah. Well, just end the meltdown. The meltdown. Yeah. It wasn't that opening day last year. I remember that. I think it was. You know, by the way that he's the closer for the angels right now. Well, good luck to do that. It's not wild though. I don't know that it. It was opening day. I know that it was Jordan Romano's first appearance. First. Billy. I just remember watching that guy. I was like, what in the hell is going on? We were frightened immediately. He looked like he was going to cry. It was awful. All right. Two one five five nine two ninety four ninety four. You can wait on yesterday. Hey, coming up not one, but two different Twitter poll questions the day from the world of basketball. We'll get to that and more. 26:18But here are the facts. Still five points back of a playoff spot 11 games to go. They can make the playoffs. Look, if they go, let me just put it out there. Let's say they go nine and two. They'd get 18 points. Could get them there. They're probably not going to go nine and two, but they've got a shot. But they really got some work to do. Clock is really, really ticking on. And they need to win games and regulation. You're right. I know. Where they face. Yeah, exactly. It's my point. But like, you know, it's like an extra level of it, you know? I really got into that way more than expected. NCAA tournament. I am flat. I got, I got nothing. I have been into it just because I, I mean, I watched it all last week. My TV in my house was on from like noon until like midnight watching

40:45it. Yeah. Last night was hysterical. I don't know if you did detail that. I heard you say the update. The Nebraska. Yeah, the Nebraska, I, okay, which was cool because Cooper DeGene was there. Yeah. So it comes down and Iowa throws like a 55 foot, you know, baseball throw basically to a player under the basket. Nebraska in like a critical moment of the game had four players on the court. How many seconds were left? Um, I think it was under a minute, but that, that's, there was 10 seconds left. Oh, 55. I'm sorry, 55 seconds left. So yeah, under a minute. Um, and he just snuck behind the defense. And I'm looking at it. And I didn't obviously know it was on the replay. I'm going, oh my God. Did the offense know did they take their time? No, the players post game said no, because they inbound it and they threw it down the court because the player was literally all the way down almost under the basket. That's why he was so open. Yeah, that's why he was so open. But you know, guy did come down and found them. But the, the offense of players in the post game thing

41:45I was watching them. They said they, they didn't realize it till they got in the locker room until they were told that there were only four players. So either the coach or a specific player screwed up. Yeah. I mean, at that point of the NCAA with a chance to go to the elite in the sweet 16 and you are a three seed. Yeah. And you don't have five players on the court. It would blew my mind. Well, I'm curious if others are struggling. Obviously, we got St. John's Duke tonight. You're good games, man. Yeah. Joe, my thing is, and I agreed, like overall, it's not what it used to be. Obviously. And even the tournament itself, the lack of, you know, the Cinderella's in the smaller schools. Like I don't love that. But I will say the level of basketball is high. Like there is, there are some real talented guys. Like there's a bunch of lottery picks still playing. You know, and last night, a couple got out to get eight coffee and Arkansas has a lottery pick. Like, but like we are like at least seeing, dude, could be NBA dude squaring off in the tournament, which is fun. Okay. Well, look, we'll ask you. Are you struggling? Obviously. You know, before the game, Rob Thompson talked about, there's a human side to a coach or manager has to cut players. And, you know, guy like Garrett stops who got caught. Now he could find his way back to the Phillies minor lakes and could find his way back to the major lakes, but there's still some unknown there. It was really interesting in the way. And I think this is part of why the players probably love Rob Thompson. You can hear the humanity in Rob Thompson as he, I want to play this audio. So he didn't get a whole lot of plant time, but I think he showed us enough in spring training that he's a potential super utility guy that can play anywhere in the outfield, play anywhere in the infield, maybe not first base, but also catch. So he's got a lot of value, but he's, that was a tough, that was a tough conversation. One of the toughest ones I've ever had, because I just think so highly. You know, like, think about that. That's surprising to you. He said, no, it's one of the toughest ones I've ever had. Think about Rob Thompson. Think about how long he's been around. Think about all the guys he's discussed these things with. And he's saying Garrett Stubbs is one of the toughest, but I'll give you an example. Yeah. But Rob Thompson's only been the guy to cut a guy for five years. Yeah. So and most of the times it's obvious. And there's

44:55and and and maybe we don't know that though. No, I'm not sure he did. The guy that's a 33rd guy on a roster. It's obvious you're going to cut him. Stubbs was near the end. And he's a guy that had been no, we don't know that this is the five. We don't know he's only been cutting guys for five years. He was. Yeah, he was. Yeah, it's as a man. It was gave a cap, or it was it was maybe in the minor. He had to tell guys they're going down or something. But that's not the same thing. But it wasn't his decision. Yeah, this is now and like I always think about a guy like an NFL coach at the end of training camp. We as a fan base are so like enough with it already. Can we just get to the regular season, please? And you're so tired of seeing the guys that are in there for the final preseason game. You're sick of it. Final preseason games at joke, but it's the head coach's responsibility at the end of that game, like the next day, two days later, like he's got to tell 15, 20 dudes, you're out, you're out, you're out, you're out. One of the best. Most of them are obvious, but there's always those friends ones where it's like tough. The best one of the best scenes in invincible is, you know, with Vermeel and Vince Mapali when he tells him he made the team. That scene gets me every time. Yeah. So it's like, and the hard knocks say, I mean, I don't watch all

So one of the scenes, I remember Danny Amindola, I believe got cut by the cowboys, I think. And he got caught by the Eagles a lump. Yeah, he did. But he got caught, I think by Jerry Jones. And then he went on to have like a good six, eight year career. I mean, he was a real fact. They're with no England. Yeah. Anyway, this stuff's thing. We'll see where it goes. James, do you think he lands in the minors or not? I think he probably makes the fills. Yeah, I think he probably makes his way back to the minors with the bills.
