How Zebra Got Their Stripes

About this episode

This African folk tale from Namibia explains the legendary origins of the zebra's markings and the baboon's appearance. The story depicts a selfish baboon who attempts to hoard a water source by scaring away other thirsty animals with a bonfire. While a giraffe and elephant are easily intimidated, a brave zebra confronts the baboon to demand that the pond be shared. During their physical struggle, the zebra kicks the baboon into the air, causing burnt sticks to land on its own body and create black stripes. Consequently, the baboon is left with a red backside from its hard landing, while the zebra carries its permanent patterned coat. This illustrated children’s book also includes educational puzzles to help young readers improve their comprehension skills.
