How the 2004 Thailand Tsunami Changed My Life || CHEF KHUN NOI (E155)

About this episode

From Tsunami Hero to Iron Chef Thailand — Chef Khun Noi’s Incredible Culinary Journey 🇹🇭🍽️

In this powerful episode of the Fruiting Body Podcast, we sit down with Tamasak “Chef Khun Noi” Chootong, a Phuket legend and celebrated chef known for his unique blend of European-Thai fusion cuisine. From surviving the 2004 Phuket tsunami to rising as a competitor on Iron Chef Thailand, Chef Noi’s journey is as inspiring as it is flavorful.

Chef Noi began his culinary path not in Thailand—but in Germany, learning classic European techniques before working on cruise ships and in 5-star hotels. Despite his Thai roots, he admits he didn’t even know how to make a curry when he started! His career took a life-changing turn when an illness forced him to slow down, leading him to open a small Phuket Town restaurant with his sister. That restaurant, Suay, became an overnight hit—offering Thai Fusion gourmet dishes at affordable prices.

🌶️ With 17 restaurants under his belt, and as a pioneer of Phuket’s modern food scene, Chef Noi now operates:

* Multiple Suay restaurant locations

* The popular Daily Dose cafés

* A large-scale catering business in Phuket with over 200 staff

* A new flagship complex with restaurants, central kitchens, and a rooftop bar

This Thai chef and restaurateur still lives a youthful lifestyle—skateboarding at midnight, playing tennis daily, and running one of the most exciting food empires in southern Thailand.
