QR codes don't simply store data in every visible square.

They also contain error-correction information that allows a scanner to reconstruct missing or damaged parts of the code.

When a QR code is created, additional data is mathematically added to the original information.

If part of the pattern becomes unreadable, the scanner can use the remaining information to determine what was lost.

This is based on Reed-Solomon error correction, a mathematical technique designed to recover data from corrupted information.

That's why a QR code can sometimes keep working even when a surprising portion of its surface has been damaged.

But there are limits.

If too much of the code is destroyed, the scanner no longer has enough information to reconstruct the missing pieces.

The amount of damage a QR code can tolerate depends partly on the error-correction level chosen when it was created.

Higher correction allows more damage to be recovered, but it also requires more space for redundant information.
