How Do You Explain Something That Looks This Bad? | Episode 185
About this episode
Some warnings are apparently for other people. This week, a wheelchair ramp falls into the water before somebody is told to hit the gas, two hunters have a deer come looking for them before they ever make it to the woods, and a red-flag beach trip turns into a whole lot more adventure than anybody planned. We’ve also got a courthouse misunderstanding, a runaway Shetland pony, one of the most unfortunate school bathroom situations imaginable, and several decisions that seemed much more reasonable at the time.
Along the way, Justin Fisher shares what life with cerebral palsy has taught him about independence, dignity, humor, and telling stories people remember. Later, he shares the childhood horse accident that caused him to seriously think about life, death, and his need for a Savior. We close with Philippians 4:8–9 and a conversation about what we choose to dwell on, how we live out what we know, and where real peace is found.

So one day I was in the bathroom. I was just trying to go in there to do what I need to do Yeah, you know, not that's why there's always a few in there. Hmm. Hurry on me doing what they're not supposed to be doing so There's this other guy and he had a weighted vest like a weighted vest like he run with And great. Hey, yes, he goes running by with it to the stall And I was like, oh, what is this guy got and I wanted to do a stall? Well another guy comes behind me and pushing me in a Shots the door. You're in the stall this other dude. I'm like, oh crap. This ain't good And I turn around open the door and there you stay as a teacher and I was like this episode of the Haydnal Bama podcast Brought to you by M first credit union serving members since 1936 and I don't law Small town big results. Hey, everybody. Welcome back to the Haydnal Bama podcast for Southern storytellers. I'm Philip I'm Shane. I'm Justin. I'm a we've got Mississippi used to be now moody unless you stayed with an M right?
We've got on and about not holding it against you because you got to look us for tonight You got a little surprise you're gonna share with them in a little bit. Yep, we're gonna hold that off Can you hold it? Baby, all right, and then you teach you a tough subject at Jeff State Community College. I do. I try to teach economics there at Jeff Yeah, yeah Shane you said you gave the central thesis for economics. What was it? It's a fine demand, baby. That's all the A plus tonight. That's right. That's right. That's right. We've got storytelling and a lot of it We have a bracket game talking about best movies We've got some gifts Shane. Will you give them just a little if you can give a little teaser on the gift? There's two of those. Oh my goodness. Can you see that? We don't know what's in here. A Randall has sent Shane and I both a big box. We're gonna unbox that here in a little bit We have Aiden's a little surprise
Justin's gonna do our testimony time and then we've got scripture time coming from Philippians chapter four verses eight and nine With a great promise to be able to walk with a God of peace and peace is something that I love and want more in my life Amen, so stick around for that Justin Tell me a story Let's see which one I want to talk about one of the most recent ones first. Yeah, okay so Just a year or so ago we bought My son an early high school graduation present we bought him a 2015 Chevy pickup truck and just a perfect truck for a 16 year old, right? And so of course we needed to go down to the Shelby. Excuse me St. Kirk County Courthouse to get the title and the tag and everything okay and so This truck was not you know rigged up like my van is it didn't have a ramp in it didn't have power seat and all that good stuff and
So as we've already noticed this wheelchair arrives up pretty good So I just raised up and kind of got close enough to slide my feet into and the wheel well there at foot well And then grabbed on and just kind of slid over into the truck and my son was like what we're gonna do with your wheelchair I was like, well, just just leave her right here in the driveway, right now that probably you know Caused some stir among the neighbors, right anybody walking their dog is gonna be like mmm something's missing Yeah, right or or the old Western were the sheriff in the posse show up like he's not gonna get far on foot You know right so me and my son you know drive over to the Courthouse and I gave my son you know the bill sale and all the insurance papers and my driver's license and My debit card and I'll sit in the truck and you go handling so he goes up to the desk And gives them you know all of that and they say is this you and he's like no This is my dad and they said where is he and he said he's in the truck and and they said
He's gonna have to come inside That's dirty now My son is in on the joke. Okay. He's been living with me for 16 years like he's the kind of boy that if we're at the ballgame And they say please stand for the invocation and the singing of our national anthem He's gonna start punching me. Hey get up. Get up get up and then when I don't he's gonna like hey y'all This guy don't love Jesus or America, you know, he's just going strong He thinks yeah, yeah, yeah, so anyway he comes out of the Courthouse Just grinning from here. He's like that. Yeah, come here. They need you inside now My my boy is built like a linebacker, right? He's 230. He's wired it to shoulder and they're at the hip he can he can carry me Right, so he does he just scoops me up like a bride over the threshold and toks me on inside And so and y'all the picture in my mind because you got to go through security when you go through the Courthouse
Yeah, and there's three guards there, right one of them looks like a calf staring in a new gate You know like he didn't know what was going on one of the other ones look you know like a Green like he knew one of us had lost a barbed at that and then the third one kind of looked like he was parking a airplane on the tarmac You know he was waving his own in right? Yeah, yeah, he was giving us one of those and so my son you know promptly stands me up as long as I got something hold on to I can I can kind of stand up and he just deposits me right there at the ladies Desk and her eyes got bigger saucers, you know you and you showers that's right and he was like and here we go Right and and he the only thing that would have been better You know if we need to put him down I'd had just a little bit of drool coming out of my mouth And he would have grabbed my hand and like come on dad you can you can sign it Yeah, did you get us losses? We got we got everything under control got a good thing take care of in the apologies
From him no from making you Oh, oh, yeah, yeah once yeah, they were they were super apologetic like if we'd have known I figured it's like and once they saw And if and if he had said up front. Oh, yeah, he's in a wheelchair They would have hotfooted it out there to us, but then he but he wouldn't have got to do all that and would have been nearest for him and and now that a good story I'm glad you got a good sense of humor I really am because that could have been taking a lot of different ways well you better Mm-hmm. I have a good sense of it. It is a good thing laughing's good. No, it's anybody else get tickled watching police officers direct traffic Yeah Especially those are getting I want him to get into it. Yeah Maybe you need to make some record and put some music to make a real You could that'd be real It's good Something like that. Well, they did that here and hey not I mean I know they're just doing their job. They're taking a serious
Bruh. I get flat tickled. It's like hey buddy. Just like this is enough Come on. That's good. I'm doing stop. That's good. I can do that. You got to give it to them What they put up with for that 30 minutes to an hour. Oh, brother. Yeah, you got a bit Yeah, I guess I do forget not every driver is paying attention They're not defensive drunk. They did not have coach Spinks as their numbers. Ed Good. Don't just be a dummy all your life Thomas. Yes, sir. Yes, sir Aiden you ready well for what to tell a story no, let me say this To whisper a microphone Aiden it gets a lot of passes, okay? Because Aiden's mom come on with it brought us homemade Oak Creep oatmeal cream pie cookies right here. So I mean, I just can't give him a hard time because he may take Well, this thing will be no fun if we can't give him a hard time
I'm gonna guard these Yeah, well I reckon I'll tell one uh, I was about last summer and uh made my buddy. We were hanging out and We decided to place an onionic called pin seekers and it's a more golf simulation place and uh Well, we was going down there and we got to town and it was closed closed down and I told him I was like hey I'm gonna touch my mom. Let me know. Let her know. We're not gonna go there. He's like no Don't do that. He said she's gonna call my mom. We're gonna go back to the house. Oh, and I said all right Okay, so we ended up not doing anything. We got out of Walmart and walk around in Walmart and then go back to the house Well, I don't think anything of it Well, we went back to my house. We hang out for about three days at week and uh We're back at my house and mom's taking us to that same place pin seekers on the onion And uh, do you say wal-marts with an S? It's a plural okay. Yeah, and uh Out of ignorance, we're pulling to the park lot and I'm like I'm excited. I've never been here before
And uh She knows she's kind of tossing the back since she kind of turns around and just gives that look And it's like well I'm getting out of this I was like I was like I was talking that besides other nights. She's like no get out of the car And so yeah And I she was like Yeah, just get out of the car. She's like I'll be back to get you. I was like oh She just kicked you out. Yeah, she's like get out of the car And yeah, so my got back in the car weather and uh my ex-sister can pick me up I got back to the house didn't say a word to me and with that I was like mom I mean, I think it was that bad. She's like nope. I'm dying Went to bed. I was like well All right, and that's morning. It was just fine So she's kind of let it go, but she has let it go she's let it go But the bottom line she had she had I couldn't go in her it's for that friend after that either you couldn't why I couldn't go to your it's for that friend after that either She thought I was sitting in that there's this thing called trust. Yeah, there is
Yeah, and once it's broken Yeah, it's done for so it's just torn apart. Yeah, I figured out, you know, like even at 14. Yeah, I can't lie to her She can't figure it out. They say trust is earned in drops and lost in buckets. Oh, that's a good word Yeah, so you got a few drops and you you'll earn your bucket back. Oh, yeah, I think because mom's here with a snitch She's watching on I can't let you tell that store where they're here, but I know I'm well I think this is actually a safe place Okay, right, right because you probably couldn't tell that Mom, let's talk about this again now. No, he's just using the safe place. Yeah, yeah, it's just talk about it I mean, I got a fear of probably in the course Yeah, that's right. Well, you got around home with it. Yeah, that's right. Maybe actually seeking a little help from us This is a place of reconciliation We've done it time and time again. Just the lower gets in it right you have some sort of quarry some sort of quarrel Disagreement and we
Bridge that gap. Yeah, okay, we do make Blessed are yeah, amen. There you go. That's that's why let me tell you something you've learned a lesson at what 1415 How much 14 you've learned a lesson at 14 about ladies That will apply for the rest of your life silent treatment and don't want to talk about it And you I think you played it well not pushing it as a good policy Well, he also learned another one about the ladies is that they remember every elephant. Oh, yeah, I just remember everything Everyday you said this that's how I said. Mm-hmm. Oh, yes. This is what you know, I didn't say that Oh, yeah, you think they're hearing it in tone and verbatim in their mind. Yeah, not only that but also what you're Awareing the posture of what you were standing what song was playing on radio? I was playing in the radio. Yeah, how fast you were driving at the top all of that is remembered. Yeah Just remember in there's no getting around to be there. Are you in trouble?
Well, we hope you're not but just in case you are we know a good lawyer Whitney Island here in Hayden, Alabama has law services or maybe if you're not from Hayden I'm sure she'd be happy to hear from you So check her out at island law.com. We appreciate Whitney and her sponsor in the show Tim another story Jess. Well, you brought up our wives and significant others remembering these things About us. I'm gonna tell you when I remember about her. Oh, okay. She's not here, man. Yeah, no difference. Okay So 20 years ago we decided we were gonna take an Alaskan cruise for our honeymoon. Okay, so You know, I'm on the phone with the with the travel agent and we had everything lined up right trip ports of call dates everything Uh, and she said now the last decision you got to make is what kind of cabin Do you want to stay in and I said what you mean? And she said well, you can have this one cabin like in the innards and the bowels of the ship
Or the bowels that sound good for a slightly higher price You can get a room with a balcony view And I said what's the slightly higher price and she said well, it's only a thousand dollars more Oh Is it on the same boat? I know we go into the same places Now y'all know love one out right and I spent the extra money and and and you look you on your honeymoon cruise with your new bride You can sit out on a balcony and your big white fluffy robes and sip hot chocolate and watch your glaciers Cav off in the ocean little sea lines um playing underneath right and and it was a good trip And on one of our excursions Uh, we were told that we would be tindering now uh, we don't have a ocean in Conrad, Mississippi so I didn't know is that legal? I In public uh tindering Uh, for those of you that don't know I don't I hope you clarify this He is proven he doesn't know tindering is when you get off the big boat
And you get on a smaller boat Called a tinder okay So it's both a noun and a verb, right and you and you tinder in the tinder All right, and and so evidently on on your cruise uh ships sometimes the bay is too shallow For the ship to go all the way to the dock and you got to get on the tinder To go cross and then go on your little excursion Well uh when we got on the tinder uh, we had the 18 working for us They they knew what they were doing buddy and uh, they had all the able-bodied people get on first And that put more weight in the boat and and and and they snugged it down real tight and they let the little wheelchair ramp come across to the dock and I just tutled right on there uh and and locked in place and and everything was just fine We went across the little bay and went on our little excursion and now it's time to come back But we had two things working against us
uh number one the wind and the waves had picked up And number two we did not have the 18 anymore this this was jv You know at best running the tinder. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. That's what it was and we got back to the ship um And I and I knew something was a miss When when they got where they thought the tinder needed to be And let the wheelchair ramp off and it missed I just fell off into water. Oh, yeah, that yeah. Yeah. That does not inspire confidence for sure, right? This so they they moved it around and sent you back down and and then and then let the lift and the second thing They did uh in my opinion wrong Was they had all the able-bodied people get off first Mm-hmm including my wife Like like she just patted me on the shoulder when when she went by and said I'll be right out here. Love you mean it. Yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, and and and so um Here was just me and this this other guy in a wheelchair about to get off. Oh Well, yeah It left to Heads get people yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah on the boat. Okay. I'm on the tinder on on the tinder They were two Any kept people tindering on the tinder if we were okay. We were now um Yeah, one of the big team, you know crew gets behind me Uh and and and and acts like he's gonna push Now y'all saw when I came in here this wheelchair is self-propelled. I got I don't need anybody to push But he gets behind me and he said when I say go oh What when I say go he said he said he said when I say go I want you to go really fast What are you going to tell? And I was like man I'm gonna look like Dale Earnhardt coming out of this thing you say go really fast now the other guy in the wheelchair
Looked at me and he said I'm gonna let you go first. Uh, right now I don't have a greedy ball in my body like I was ready for him like no, okay So you know almost says the first she'll be like you go around me and a man So he he got ready to push and I got ready to go and I looked up and I it's a fact with my hand up Right as as Wendy used to say I looked up and there was my new bride y'all Not down underneath praying like she ought to have been there in the kitchen. No, you know She had her camera up Because this was a photo opportunity Know what this was was insurance Amen you stole my punchline. I knew it. I knew it. She was wanting to make sure that if this thing went south She had proof to collect all the shirts For the cruises for life. I didn't do this. It was your 18. Yeah, that did yeah, that was it So were you digging like that when you come man? Yeah, I look I did a look like even I was gonna jump the thing if I had to
Well, take me off for both. I'm at the I'm still sitting on the edge of the boat. What what do we do? I mean he's behind you you gave the gas and He said go it was look at the end, you know The Lord is gracious and sovereign all right We we went and made it just fine. We had a great cruise, but but yeah, it was a little it was a little dicey On the ramp. There was previously in the water Yeah, they they hauled it back up and and and and put her back down did you spend time to see If your partner there. Oh, no, I was out at that Good luck. Do you look him back? Hey, say put the hand of the plow don't look back. That's right. That's right I was a bridge builder. Yeah, right? Like I showed you the way. Yeah, amen Now look what what is the Bible say straight is the path and narrow is the way Right and and you you caught up on your praying when you when you get off the tender like last question about the tender and the cruise This ramp does it have rails? Oh, no no no no no no It might have a little lip on it. So you I mean oh
Yeah, you got some of the whales. Yeah, you could that boat shifts that's nice. Yeah, it was I'm yeah Really was that you're here? Was that more Adventurous than the actual excursion. Oh, absolutely. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, everything Everything that's pretty safe and and buttoned up. Yeah, wow We're going now I don't know Y'all tell me I just got yeah, we all know we're gonna do a new day. Yeah, it's a new day. Yeah It's tomorrow will be tomorrow today. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, I'll tell you another one Uh It's last hunting season and I was in the blind and it was about I'd been I'll give you a backstory It's over on my grandparents property over non-ion And I've had this deer on camera. I got him on camera now and I've been hunting for two years. Okay Now I'd been it was a Christmas break last school year and I'd been out hunting them every single day
No, look he'd be on camera right before dark or right before daylight And then disappear like they always are right Well, I got out there one morning and it was real cold and it was sleet and real bad and then the shooting house I said I didn't got winded set stuff just coming in on me And I was mad as I come down with this so it seven twelfth I remember this because y'all will figure out why I remember this vividly It's seven twelfth. I walked out of the stand and walked back to the house Now time goes on I get up to the house. I just go to about my day doing whatever else Now 10 o'clock my trail camera pictures come in Now 713 That book was out on the field And then I got a video of him and he just walks And he looks up and you see him looking up toward the house and he just walks me watches me walk up the house Wow Never saw him again after that So he learns he's that yeah, he was all right. I got this guy. Okay. Yeah
What are the coordinates for that problem? Yeah Drop his pen. He's got on X in a message. Yeah. Yeah, the old buckaroo that Learned some things What did you learn from that? What did you take away now as a runner this year? I'm gonna sit in the stand Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm learning to have patience. Not just that in my life, but not just hunting but everything There's my lessons learned. Yeah, that's right Yeah, patience. How big of a buck? He said how big old buck is uh I'm gonna give you a fast on that one Again and no description on the blue a true deer hunter. Well, he wasn't really impressed with the one I got over here in the corner So I mean in fact tells you he's that big. We're gonna follow you to that Put that tracking device on him. Yeah, brother Johnny brother Johnny's donation to the podcast is so big that we can't even get him a ball We're gonna hang it up
If you know you know Ampest dare to be iconic What we're going now? Well, he told a hunting story so I gotta tell him mine as well. Yeah. Yeah So this one involves me and and my best friend Who's also named Justin? Hmm who also is from Mississippi who also has cerebral palsy wow now Let me give you a little background when I was uh Maybe three four years old my parents Took me for rehabilitation To the Mississippi cripple children center like that was the title on the building Evidently don't miss any words, right? Right? Right? Right? Right? Mississippi was just as politically incorrect You know 50 years ago as they are now. Yeah, good. Yeah, and so the story is told now I don't remember this but the story is told that one day both sets of parents showed up to collect their Justines at the same time and you know we had been
Three or four-year-old pals and one of us said By Justin and the other one said by Justin and our moms freaked out like oh My baby, you know, you know, cerebral palsy and Justin and you can't you can't get it You're not there, right? So uh, I lived Again near Phil Deffy, Mississippi. He lived at near Vicksburg, Mississippi. So opposite sides of the state, but Our parents made sure we saw each other growing up Christmas holidays and spring breaks and summer breaks We we saw each other you know two two three weeks out of the year and we went to Mississippi State together and room together Right, so somebody would call the dorm room. Hello, and they would say can I speak to Justin and you to Justin speaking which one oh And they would say the one in the wheelchair and you would say Which one and then you would say and they would say the good look. Oh, that's for you, right? And so that was you right that was a man. Yeah, so I could tell a lot of stories about me and Justin
But I'll tell this one about me and him going hunting together, right? so You know for the worst part about hunting for for me is that when it gets cold you got to dress in layers mm-hmm and Getting dressed is one of the most physically demanding things I do And and getting dressed in layers is just like getting dressed over and over and over and over again So so you know you get up before daylight and you start Getting dressed and it just just takes longer um, and so now we're gonna go out and get into My 1991 handicapped accessible minivan, right? It's the perfect, you know hunting vehicle, right? So imagine if you will it's got a it's got a lift on it Uh, it comes out and lowers to the ground Uh, you get your wheelchair on it you push your button raises you up to four-board level you're back In and you lock down. It's like a like a fifth wheel pin on the bottom of my wheelchair
That way, you know if you're gonna wreck you don't go bouncing around like a pinball, right? And then you transfer six-way power seat up down left right side to side And then like I said drive with hand controls, right? So so here we go. Me and Justin Head to toe camo going out to the Knoxabee county Refuge while life refuges are outside of startable uh, they have a handicapped only designated hunting area. You know the joke in the county is That's where all the deer go Tinio to the hide During hunting season. I guess if you think people are shooting at you those with the paulzy might be give you better odds, you know And so we're driving out to the refuge and it was foggy that morning. I mean like pea soup foggy like folks in Mississippi would go out on the porch and stick their hand out in the fog and and try to guess how many fingers they're holding up like that kind of Thick
And we're about halfway there and out of the corner of my eye brown furry blur comes bound and Out and in front of the van and you know we were we were hit by a kamikaze deer Now what y'all think about that a minute You don't know what the word irony means. Yes, right three handy like if you if if you look irony up in the dictionary irony right when two cripple men Get up before daylight dress and hand to toe camo And and go out into the woods thinking that if they go far enough And sit long enough and are quiet enough They might kill a deer But if they get in a really big van With really bright lights and a really loud engine Them deer just come out of the woods and fling themselves right in front of you right? I'm seeing it So we got we got a decision to make now We can either you know you get you
You come over you can either carry on soldier own and go out and hope to kill a deer Or That right like if if a bird in the hand is word two in the bush How much is a dead deer worth on the south of the road that's exactly right right so we turn around and we're gonna go get the deer now Me and Justin had been hunting separately For several times before But any time we had harvested a deer we needed a able-bodied person to go bring it in and this time We gonna get it our say yeah, I made it one right right now Let me pause here for two reasons number one Let me say if you that if you've ever got the opportunity To help someone with a disability The most valuable thing that you can give them is their independence Because giving them their independence Will give them something that is priceless which is dignity
Right Now there's another irony there because what I'm about to say there was nothing dignified About this process now just and I can both walk on handcrutches So so we get out of the van and and you know kind of weeples wobble, but they don't fall down right and we get down I guess five or six feet bank not real steep um But but um and you know we we kind of shimmyed around and and pushed and pulled and we got her up to the top of the bank But tries we might tries we might we could not get this doe up into the back of the of the minibank And so one of us has the brigand idea hey Why don't we just put her on the wheelchair lift? I mean think work work smarter not harder right? Okay So and we thought instead of moving the doe to the lift it'd be Better easier to move the van back to her right? Okay, so I get into van all the things I just described back into thing both back doors open
Right and so my side view mirrors, you know, I couldn't really and so I told the other Justin who's at the back of the van with the doe. I was like hey man hold your crutch up in the air Yeah, you know, so I can see where or y'all I didn't want to run over Justin over just right right right right now Picture if you will Uh the sun has come up. Mm-hmm the fog has lifted And we heard a car coming Help is on the way now. I want y'all to imagine the scene that this Car is about to pull up on right? Oh, I'm mad. There's there's a dead tear on the side of the road Real chair ramp out cripple man over the deer one crutch on the ground and the other one straight up in the air And y'all I can really I can yes. I can see it in my mind's eye I can see Justin's face in in the rearview mirror and he says
Just that You know you do at that point y'all they drove on by Just gave us the glad Dignity boy. Yeah, you got you diggin right right right right right yeah Well, they knew the lesson. I guess I guess so anyway we moved around got the doe on the on the lift Hit the button let the hydraulics pull her back up but but you can't Flip it. Yeah, I don't have no power. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so we had to leave the doe on the lift and had to leave the lift out So and therefore we had to drive in the middle of the road so you wouldn't take mailboxes off and going going back to that Well Is the most Mississippi thing I probably I'm gonna show my deer off. I mean, yeah, that's the strapping it to the hood I mean, we almost went by the Walmart sparking line right
Look over here. See what I got We used to the same thing as shale with the raccoons on top of the mailbox So on top of the other the dog box and I can remember thinking that people wanted to see that yes This is fix it in press some people show parking. Yeah, look at these three Boracans we got here. How is Justin's mom back mom back Well, good enough. I hadn't started moving it before the car came by so he hadn't All instructions. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, oh absolutely. Yeah, yeah, he had it Which Mississippi yeah, he's from Biggsburg. Yeah, he's from Biggsburg over there. He's probably got a Yale. Yeah. Oh, yeah, whoa Yeah, yeah, there you go. We gotta get a good one Great story Do you know what I'm gonna do this time? I don't you see a pattern. I think I got it. Okay. I think I got it. Let's see where I am So it's past summer guys at the beach was my girlfriend or family. Oh Hold up. He's got a girlfriend
Yeah, making a note and We were I think it was a second or third day way average at the beach and Where in the water went now Be in from Blanc County, Alabama. You don't think that a red flag I swam it's fine It's most males don't pay attention. Yeah, yeah, I don't yeah, he He proceeded or preceded he preceded his story with being from Blanc County. I'll do you hear my preceded preceeded I'll just just for for Claire and For I think it was a rip current with a red flag right normally the angel. Yeah Yeah, now I'm thinking not us. Well, it'd be us Yeah, that didn't apply. Yeah, and so it was me and her and her sister and her boyfriend and her mom And we go out there with two floats I'm in the water. Oh, we're in the water And we're trying to find the sand bar now. We've been out to the sand bar the two days before this and
they went And uh, so two floats between the five of us I think and it was me and her on float and them them three on the floor now Well, I know they were late went. It was just me and her no in the good of America I'm gonna win there somewhere and And we're flunked mouth there and I'm looking and she looks and she goes you know, I don't see anybody else out this far and I go I think you're right and I look back and I say people on the sand bar and I'm like how do we miss the sand? And so I'm like, well, we'll just go back traveling 20 knots an hour. Yeah, I'm like, yeah, we'll just go back and I turn around and walk back I'm not moving I was like, okay, she's like why are you not going? I'm pulling her on the floor. She's like why are you not going? So hang on a minute. It's like I got this. I'm a dude, you know, whatever Yeah, and we get a little bit actually got to where I could touch and that's where it started
That's really a real problem not really kicked in. Oh, yeah, because when I started touching the sand started disappearing It was like oh Right, yeah, so I get back and we're probably 20 feet from the shore. Wait. I've made some park you have made progress, but there was that was very I don't it was very bad progress at that Because she's screaming at me the whole time and crying and she's like She's like we're gonna die. We're not gonna die. She's such room for help. I'm like no don't care for I was like we're not we're not going to we're not getting help. I was like help is here help is here Yeah, all right, and she's like we got to get help. I'm like she's like where's my mom? I was like I don't know where your mom She's they're way back there and she's like they the long long story. Yeah, long story short we get back to up to the tent Very stringuously. Yeah back to the tent and she just pups and she's like I can't believe you know, I was like how's it my fault
And yeah, always she was like I can't wait we must die and uh that 10 minute slider here come on or sister and her and her boyfriend and They might have a hell of a car. They were up here. Yeah, and they were like You don't believe what happened nice and they were like you won't believe what happened nice either So you know from the takeaway from that don't swim when you think you can great. Yeah, he's like What happened to them oh they they went out for the nice say wow and now her sister boyfriend is about 65 he's real tall and uh He's long live. He was he was he thought they're going down Let me see feed Yeah, those aren't flippers. No no fans on those nope I love a red flag day. There's nothing better than a red flag day than a double red flag day Because in the Gulf of America we don't get to experience that Those waves And I love that because I like to body serve
My middle child also loves to body serve for we were down there in the her canate up A month back or so I forget how long ago and My wife had already set us down it just gets worse. She'd already said my middle daughter in me down I said it's a double red flag today do not even go to the beach Because she knows if we get out there at temptations going to be a little too strong I said okay, I'm not gonna fight it this year. So I'm there by the pool. Well my daughter comes up to me so dad Look have you seen those waves out there and I saw baby. I've been trying not to look at them, you know Let's just walk down there and see them up close Mm-hmm, okay We go down there and we're standing just where the Sand starts to climb and I'm at my or in the power of those waves Just thinking man. I like to be part of that and experience that
Something starts drawing me into the water. I can't say what it was come off to the flames. I just Start off into the water and immediately I hear I Don't know how that was your wife. That was the police Oh, I don't know how they materialized out of a sand I had looked left and right like I was crossing the road before I did it. They were not there Wow And they pull up and says sir, what do you do? And I said why was gonna tell these people right out here that they needed to get out of a water Well, thank you for your help. Yeah, I said we're just headed back to the condo. It's a five I think five hundred dollars to be In the water on a double red flag on a double red flag wow Don't quote me on that prize, but it was more than I wanted to pay. Yeah, yeah, but it's it wouldn't happen to us though. No No, don't apply to me. That's a man thing. Yeah, that that's a xy chromosome defect is that nothing's gonna happen
Learn so many lessons there. I don't know that you've learned them, but you heard them that I've got you got opportunity You did have an opportunity. It's always your fault Mm-hmm don't ignore the red flags And it can't happen to you. Oh, okay. There's still a number for you And for y'all that was free. Yeah, thanks to Aiden and then Shane's little recap. Well, a smart man Learns from his own mistakes. Oh, a wise man learns from the stake of a That's that's one of our favorite things that we learned that's solid in our storytelling. Yeah, you're fitting in here good I appreciate that. Oh, you know, it's not just red flags at the beach. You have to be aware Oh, yeah Well, I don't know if I need to get in that or not. Did you know what he's talking about? You know what he's on that? Oh, yeah Okay, I didn't know if you would yeah if that was a older night, but I was right there with you thinking about Just something not whaers and charges more. I went together. Oh, I like it. Yeah, you're applying the sermon I am yeah, okay, come on you listen
And apply I didn't just listen. He's applying. I do have another question. Doers of course. Oh James come on Not just here You know, we we talked earlier about going to the pensickers in the wal-marks Now we've learned that you've got a girlfriend. Yeah, do we need to do you want to go ahead and fess up that the girlfriend had something to do with being at the wal-mark? Oh, no, she come on now. Hold on. That was what come on now. Do we look mom? I'm a lot of she's in him She's in the camera. Okay, no you you trying to get this boy I know what you this was this was before man. However, oh, yeah, okay, not her Let's get some red back down and then Crawling up there I really get really gets warm when you get under the hot in the hot seat under the And we can't turn the fan on because they're up a red box And that's right. That's right. We could turn there all kinds of variables
For generations people have chosen at first with their financial needs Not years later, so do I they're not going anywhere You ready for no one you got it Get up this guy's coming around look hey, hey, hey, don't go on. Yeah, that's the looks for brain. I'm telling you that's a Hornet. Yeah, education. Yeah, I'm speaking of smear them in molding that one any up. I want you guys like that That We just have a bacon on on low-cus-fort topic So I've been a ninth grade now and seventh grade and this teacher Yeah, I got a lot of misheard to end of the year in this school year when I do with this guys I'd bring him to daremate He was one of the teachers, you know, I bring him to your mate. I mean apple for the teacher. Okay, one thing the tender Yeah, yeah, for those Jefferson State Community College, you can do it right here It's gonna be a little hit. Don't be starting class tomorrow. Come on with it. You tell about a good fine ten won
Maybe ten points on final grade. You know who's in the room with me when I turn in final grades at dinner semester Nobody but me in the good lord and and and and I can be a swat Over that seven doing eight real quick. I think that's a nine there. Go ahead. Sorry. Oh, no, it's fine Anyway, so one day I was in the bathroom. I was just trying to go in there To do what I need to do Now there's always a few in there. Hmm. Hurry on me doing but they're not supposed to Anyway, so There's this other guy and he had a weighted vest like a weighted vest like he run with Hey, yes, hey goes running by with it to the stall and I was like oh what is this guy got and I want to do a stall Well another guy comes behind me and pushing me in a shot the door. You're in the stall this other dude I'm like, oh crap. This ain't good
And I turn around open the door and there he stands the teacher and I was like And I was explaining to me. Yeah, he was like You go down there and you walk to the principal's office and you tell them why you're in the stall another boy I was like Listen, I was like listen to me. I was like no He was like nope nope. I don't hear it. I was like my thought process was I was like he walks down And he's going to his classroom Now the prince was also on the solah hallway and I'm like I'm not going He didn't do anything wrong. She don't know she don't know that I'm supposed to be coming to say And I'm like I'm not doing and I walk and there's a Offs is was right here and they read my school so her office is right here And the hallway turned that was my class. I was like I'm just going walk down this way. I'm gonna take this left turn and not go down there About the time I'm taking a left turn again the hallway. He turns around And he starts marching back toward me. I'm gonna go in there
You know what I'm just gonna go in there and I was like I Coat seven so tell me to come see she's like okay that what I was like and she's like Hold on She said and she sits there and she's on the phone with somebody when I walked in there and uh She's kind of brushing me off. She's like come back later. It's like okay I'm not coming back later right there And uh class goes on and saying to the day she calls me back in there. She goes So tell me why you went to install another boy at school and I was like Listen And I told her she's like first. She asked who was the person to install and I told her and calling him up there and uh He told a completely different of course completely different side of the me he was you know Oh, yeah, he came in there and shut the door and I was like I did not I did not shut the door I was like so and so I didn't know who it was. I don't know who came behind me. I still don't know who came
To this day. I still don't know. I really don't want to know either but uh She was like I told her my side and she was like alright Go back to class. That's like really? She's like yeah, she's like do you believe now? She's like think I'm in a problem. She's like I trust you because I've never given up problem at school And uh he stays in there. Well, the next day he uh comes up to me. He goes Well, and I go well and he's like what happened to you? He's like well, I have ISS That's initial suspension and I was like for what and she and uh It's like well, I knew who pushed you in It's like I'm friends with him and I don't want to incriminate him So I told her I did it and I was like Well, I was like So that's it. She's like yep, we're done with it. So you know all square Yeah, yeah, so If you are watching and you're in school for one don't follow somebody into the style with a way to best
Good lesson And I'm never gonna do that again Learn wow he's learning all kinds of lessons Yeah, treasure trove of lessons to learn Yeah, I learned that if there were more than one person in the bathroom I'm going in there. Yeah, in high school Yeah, I'm just I hold it Okay Yeah, because that cigarette smoke might be blamed on me. Yeah, the person's gone. Yeah, yeah, I won't do it I like it you go smell that smoke days like watermelon. Oh, yeah, I guess back in our day No, no, no, no, Lucy or a basic. Yeah, I don't know how much money you got Newport yeah Tell me one more all right all right um So grown up cone, Adam, a sippy one of the great joys of my life
was Riding in a little two-wheel pony cart pony cart pulled by a shittlin pony now The little backstory here my grandfather marzine otis Fisher Had bought me and my brother Cody butail Fisher this little little shittlin pony and and she had long blonde mane and tail and we named her Goldilocks now So fitting yeah, except that Shittlin ponies are one of God's great jokes on mankind Because we have looked at shittlin ponies and said well those are little horses And we have looked at children and said those are little people so we ought to put them together Yeah, match made him but if you don't know shittlin ponies are evil there the devil I really believe y'all I really believe
That if God had not used a serpent in the garden they would use a shittlin pony Shittlin pony was back up like number you know number two if we needed if we needed a backup that I've never met one that wouldn't rather bite you than look at you or kick you if they had a chance. Yeah, that's how they are You didn't that's that what Johnny had yes They were always nice to me But the beauty of this little two-wheel pony cart was that her head was far enough away from you that she couldn't bite you And the frame of the buggy was between you two you and her legs or she couldn't kick you can get you and man I mean many happy hours In this little cart and sometimes We would ride up the paved road To Uncle Rudy's house My dad's brother Uncle Rudy He had two boys as well Brandon and T. Y. By the way T. Y's name is T period wife period evidently there was a shortage of letters in Mississippi that year and all that head was initials
So we were riding the two-wheel pony cart with Goldilocks pulling it up on the top of the hill Me and me and T. Y and T. Y. Got ready to get out of the pony cart and about the time He reached a hand me the reins something happened I don't know if a screen door slammed or somebody Stepped on a discarded toy or if the fireworks just went off in the little evil ponies mine But something happened and to go boop there And and this all happened before the reins were in my hand And y'all she took off and bounded down the big hill in front of Uncle Rudy's house and took a hard right on highway 492 And and she was she was hunting some yonder let me tell you now my dad saw what was happening and he jumped off the porch And started running down the driveway gonna as they say cut us off at the pass Right, but he's too late
And the only thing he could do as me and Goldilocks passed by was to yell hold on Which I think is the biggest understatement ever in the history of the world. I want to yell back. What do you think I'm doing? Right And y'all she was she was booking now Highway 492 is the busiest road between Union and sabastipoo missyp. There there may be four or five cars a day go up down this road But it don't take but one you have a real bad wreck with a little cripple boy and a shatland pony But she had been up and down this road so many times that she knew to stay in her lane And she was she was staying in her lane headed to house. It might be a mile mile and a half not all that far But she was she was getting it. I remember distinctly miss Etoll thrash Coming the other direction and her big Buick, you know And miss Etoll at this point in her life had gotten to where she would drive
You know with the steering wheel like this right and look between the dashboard in this steering and I was yelling Hey help help and miss Etoll just gave me the glass hand, you know just smiled and weighed at me now At this point in the story I wish I could say Like a scene out of some great western movie that I leapt From the pony card on door back and just put her in the headlock and bitter ear and wrestled her to the ground and saved my Oh, yeah, but that's not what happened What happened was Uncle Rudy got in his 1960 something volts wagon van took off and past us Got in front of Goldilocks and slowed down and slowed down and when she went to pass him He threw that van in park and reached and grabbed the reins and saved us From what could have been a major disaster
John Wayne no way we are right there now the the punchline of the story Is that when my dad finally caught up with us and got in the cart and took the reins He leaned over to me and said don't tell your mom Mm-hmm But but the moral of the story is much bigger right hold on to the reins. So stay any lane. Don't have Shetland ponies I'm rattling them off here. Hmm Ephesians chapter two but God Who is rich and mercy because the great love with which he saved us He rescued us Not of yourselves less anyone should boast right that is the great Life preserver um of the gospel right that if that if we were once drowning And are no longer it is not because we learned how swine yeah, it's because we were rescued from a from a major disaster We're back in your story Rudy played that
Miss Uncle Rudy around talk a Rudy April he played the Savior very hard to say that's right That was actually pretty brilliant. I can see you just oh yeah Yeah, yeah, Uncle Rudy was that kind of guy too. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, that's awesome. It's anything Yeah, yeah Go to locks Was the owner mission she was chair pullers by the way she had two Foles back at her house and it was mama just trying to get Give that home to those babies. That was her motivation. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we've been going on now What story is it in the Bible where The arc of Israel the cows and they take those cows and and the and the The Philistine say if if we build a new card and hook these cows to it and they go back to the camp of the Israelites Will know that this was the Lord because mama cow is going to get back to her baby same way we go She went to the camp she would go back. Randa works Yeah, we've also got a coin here that says rooted in Christ. Hmm With a Bible verse do drony 31 eight on the bat Mr. Randa you two kind wow Well, we might have to see this is better and embarrassment of riches. That's what this is Heavy randled. Thank you so much and the gentleman that I think helped you with the little devies appreciate you for your kindness What so I saw a picture of you in Rick Bragg? Yeah He is why I look at Southern living every month I turned
Straight to the back page and read his article for his story every month. How'd you come in contact with him? Well Really really a neat story I um, I've written three little books full of these little stories that have happened right like as you can imagine with cerebral palsy this life is gonna happen and And if if you're from Mississippi and you got some storytelling background you're gonna try to tell them So I've written three little books full of these little stories and the life lessons that I think God was trying to teach me during those times in the scripture references that go along with those lessons and Rick Bragg was doing a book sign book reading and a book signing at the trustful library and I said I'm gonna go and it was it was a great night You know, uh, I say Rick Bragg Um, when he describes food You can taste it like he just paints a picture with his with his words
um And and the other thing I'll say about storytelling is that I read somewhere a long time ago If you want people to know the truth you should tell them the truth But if you want them to remember the truth and love the truth you should tell them a story And I heard you just the other day say I meet people all the time and have conversation with them and when I leave there I can tell you their story. I can't remember their name for nothing But I can tell you their story and and and that's what that's what I try to do and that's certainly what Rig Bragg does um, so yeah, just just kind of a and so anyway the the beautiful thing and and maybe I should make this much profile picture Uh, at the end of the night he was sitting there being very gracious with his time Um, we sat there at the table and he signed His new book for me and I signed my new book for him and we exchanged book So that was that was a cool moment in my life. So so two things Before we moved to a he's he's primed over here. I can't tell him the name of the book. Yeah shameless plug here
So my first book is called uh, I can't even walk without you holding my hand Uh, the second book is called Chronicles from the crossroads of Konohata several palsy and the cross Um, and then the third book is called of gravity and grace I wish in hindsight I call I would have called it grits gravity and grace. I missed it I missed a good one there, but yeah, you can find those on just an just an fissure do not buy Justin Fisher declares war that's not yours Okay, it's a good did you say your fourth book was gonna be playing rock paper scissors? That's right. That's what I'm gonna be doing I don't know that I ever do this to you All the opportunities that I have to you know what I'm saying. Yeah It's worth a while He did this to me with German chocolate cake last time
Yeah, Aiden You like country music. Oh, yeah, you have a bass voice this deeper than both chains in mind at 14 years old like a Randy Travis Oh, yeah, what's the other guy that long black train? Yeah, yeah, Josh Turner. Yeah, good. I will threat one more thing Sorry, this is this is shameless. We talked about your book if anybody knows Rick Bragg out there and can get in touch with him I would love to have him on the show. I sent him an email and And he is not responded. I don't know they'd checks that email But anyway, would love to have him on the show. Yeah, so if you can get me contact them would love that right? Yeah, so Back to first August I released my first song on On all streaming services so you can find it if you want to if you don't want to that's okay That's okay, it's okay, but uh it's called still alive. You know, it's had on Everything so I listen to it on Spotify. Is it still alive? Is there a backstory at After coming out of the yeah, yeah, I could be out of the bathroom. It's contacts there. That's good. Yeah, that's good
Now that song has even greater Yeah, so yeah Yeah, you listen to it and thank wow What he was singing how I find it though if they're on Spotify a ID and a ID and I'm sorry Anyway, yeah, that's a good country music singer. Oh, yeah, strong and the name I should name. Yeah, best look to you. That's a That's a uphill climb, but it's you know what if you if you want to do it you can do it. How Jackson said it best Chasing in the on rainbows Living in homes. Yeah, hot it. I guess. Well, that's what he said. Oh, I swear it. That's what he's saying. Pick it. Well, I'm glad to have wish you the best Oh, yeah, for sure Test my only time. That's on you. Yeah. Yeah. Wow I guess you know, I heard brother blinks say the other day. I don't think I've ever known a day Where I did not know and love the Lord and that's I mean, I went to church nine months before I was ever born
You know and had good Christian parents um But when I was 12 years old um I Little let me back up a half a step My dad said all the rednecks wanted to be cowboys and we were rednecks That we wanted to be cowboys and I horse May have not been my first word, but it was close and I and I wanted to be a cowboy in red horses and When I was 12 years old we had this big fat Palimena horse That my grandfather named Flickr Now I didn't realize until years later that there was a show Called my friend Flickr But my grandfather said Flickr and that's all I ever knew. So that's what we called her And and and my dad let me ride this horse with the saddle and he tied me to the saddle with a pig and string That way if I lost my balance, I'd still be in the saddle
And so one day my dad said hey, so and so cow has probably had her calf by now Right over there and see I'm like man Come on now. I'm on the horse dad told me to go check on the cows come on as a little boy, right Uh, Peppa Fisher's Hound dog named Naylor Trotted right along with us and we got up on top of the hill and y'all it was like You know, I was a Marbore man, you know just looking down on the on the cattle and Naylor decided he wanted to chase the cows He took off running and the cows took off running and Flickr decided she wanted to chase the cows And she rared up one time and I kind of held her But when she rared up that second time I fell over in my stomach hit the saddle horn Knocked a breath out of me and I failed to the side And I just tried to hold on to the to her neck But she was so fat like a 55 gallon drum that that saddle start to slide over and over and over
Um, and I don't remember whether she stopped and I failed or I failed and she stopped But by the grace of God She did stop Um, and I reached up and untied myself pulled the slipknot, right and rolled out from under her And I looked up and I saw my dad coming and my dad was crying And y'all know that generation of men don't cry But he heard What was happening and and figured he had lost his son Um, and it was only then that I realized how Close I had probably come to being killed And I just remember laying in my bed That night wrestling with that about the brevity of life Um, and I kind of came to grips with my own mortality knowing that I wasn't gonna live forever And that I was a sinner
Um, and and I just remember praying Uh, you know, just a simple childlike prayer lord. I'm I'm a I'm a big big sinner and I need a big big savior something like Um, and so My testimony now is Romans 828 Mm-hmm, and we know that all things work together for good Um, for those who are called According to his prophecies, right and if you go back and you study that that word all You dig down into the the original language what you'll find is that the word all means all It covers Uh, broken dishes and broken windows and broken bones and broken hearts and broken marriages and broken lives All means all all covers doubt and disease and disability and divorce and and and and dementia and even death
Um, and it doesn't say that that all things Would would feel good Yeah, it it says all things are working together For good somehow Um, when we pray and when I we we're not gonna go back to toeball But when I was a little kid before the meal we would say god is great. God is good. Let us thank him for Yeah And I think when I was a little kid I heard god is great I thought that that was the the simple superlative if he'd being good But god is great Means he's sovereign mm-hmm, and he's in control of everything So if you think about those two things right like god if if god is good He's kind and he's merciful And he's also great Sovereign overall things that means nothing bad nothing truly eternally bad can ever happen to you So that's the kind of god we serve and um, um, yeah, that's my that's powerful man. Amen
Thank you for sharing that. Amen. It means a lot. It's really and I tell you we have We started the testimony journey about eight weeks ago maybe ten weeks ago. I can't even remember how long it's been now and We've got an email after email comment after comment about how god uses Personal testimony to really speak to a lot of people. So thank you, and I trust that he'll do the same with you Yeah Philippians chapter four verses eight and nine this is about having peace something you didn't have that night when you got off that horse Yeah, you did not have peace in that that's right. That's right and It's something that the older I get the more I want I think In a in a world in the contrast is is we live in a world that loves conflict In turmoil and everything else verse eight and nine say finally brethren was so everything's or true was so everything's are honest Was so everything's are just was so everything's are pure was so everything's are lovely
Was so everything's are of good report if there be any virtue and if there be any praise Think on these things Those things which you have both learned and received and heard and seen in me do And the god of peace shall be with you There's two applications in a promise the first one is what we're thinking about It's in another word is to dwell and that is deep thinking I can go down the interstate 30 miles and not know Something I've passed because I'm so deep and thought about something So dwelling and thinking is not the problem. It's the object of what we dwell and think upon and again Things that are true things are honest just lovely good report If we'll fill our minds with those things I think we'll be in a lot better state and have a lot more peace as opposed to thinking about all the things We don't have all the negative things that we don't want or whatever else because as soon as I start thinking about all the things I I won't ain't got
Pieces not what I would describe that situation But then we always have to we got to go beyond the hidden knowledge to our hands and feet And says those things which you have learned received heard and seen in me So Paul had taught them and they had learned They had received his verbal teaching They had heard him and they had seen his life and how that he tried to follow Christ with his life and they had visualized that and he's saying do these things and it's not that he wanted Then to be like Paul He wanted them to be like Christ The one that he was seeking to be like too and so that's our pursuit So if we will think on those things were a mind and we will live out the commands of Christ and try to act of the follow Christ Then we get the promise at the end This says and the God of peace will be with you and that doesn't mean you won't have conflict That doesn't mean you won't have challenges and all sorts of things But peace is something that can be present in the darkest of days. It doesn't have to be a great situation
Amen Amen And that's what I want and that's what I'd like for everybody out there and I want to say this one more thing Just to Make sure we're all on the same page Paul is riding to a group of believers and how they can have peace. That's right But you can't have the peace that Paul wrote about until you make peace with God like you talked about that night with a simple prayer Where you realize you were a sinner in need of a savior and you cried out in faith in belief And placed your faith in Jesus Christ and ask him to forgive you of your sins and that's how you make peace with God Because only Jesus and what he did can make peace with God. Yeah, you know One of the the very last things Jesus said before going to the cross He's in the upper room with the disciples and he says my peace. I give to you my peace. I leave with you My peace. I give you not as the world gives that's right, right
Yeah, that's beautiful good good word, brother It's a we love peace and we love we try to own promise. I keep trying to find it in the world And the problem with that is is the world ain't got it no matter how much it promises that it does Have I left anything out? Well, thanks any stone unturned But that uh well Justin yes, sir Aiden pleasure. It's been I'm glad that you joined us tonight. Yes. Yes. We've got a good time Absolutely.
